The supernatural power of love is taking North America by storm as the new Broadway and West End musical Ghost The Musical, adapted from the Academy Award-winning film, launches its first national tour in Schenectady, NY, at Proctors Theater on September 14, 2013.

Ghost The Musical will premiere in Pittsburgh from December 31, 2013 through January 5, 2014, at Heinz Hall.  Ghost The Musical is part of the PNC Broadway Across America-Pittsburgh series presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Broadway Across America and Pittsburgh Symphony.

Ghost The Musical features Steven Grant Douglas as Sam Wheat, Katie Postotnik as Molly Jensen, Carla R. Stewart as Oda Mae Brown and Robby Haltiwanger as Carl Bruner.

CREATIVE TEAM

Ghost The Musical is directed by Tony Award-winner Matthew Warchus (Matilda, God of Carnage, The Norman Conquests, Boeing-Boeing) and choreographed by Ashley Wallen (“The X Factor”, Kylie Minogue, Seal, Madonna's film WE). The musical features book and lyrics by Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost, Jacob’s Ladder, The Time Traveler’s Wife) who has adapted his Academy Award-winning original screenplay for the stage, and original music and lyrics by a team of Grammy Award-winners, including Dave Stewart (half of the multi-Grammy Award-winning Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror, Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill). The score also includes the iconic song “Unchained Melody,” written by Hy Zaret and Alex North (Courtesy of Frank Music Corp. ASCAP) and famously performed in the film by The Righteous Brothers.

Set in modern day New York City, Ghost The Musical is a timeless fantasy about the power of love. Walking back to their apartment one night after a romantic dinner, Sam and Molly are mugged, leaving Sam dead on a dark street. Sam is trapped as a ghost between this world and the next and unable to leave Molly, who he learns is in grave danger. With the help of a phony storefront psychic, Sam tries to communicate with Molly in the hopes of saving and protecting her.

When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won't be found - a convent!  Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior.  Using her fabulous disco-ness and killer voice to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church, but in doing so blows her cover.  Soon it’s nun-on-the-run time but she finds salvation in the heavenly power of her newly found sisterhood.  Based on the mega-hit feature film, SISTER ACT features an original Alan Menken/Glenn Slater score with a vast inspiration of musical styles from Motown, soul and funk to great big disco anthems and Barry White inspired musical comedy.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG (Producer) is among the most well-known performers around the world. Set in a small town, the story follows Billy as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class, discovering a surprising talent that inspires his family and his whole community and changes his life forever.

Billy Elliot the Musical features Ty Forhan, Kylend Hetherington, Zach Manske and J.P. Viernes in the role of ‘Billy.’

Cast Biographies

TY FORHAN (Billy) is 13 years old, from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. Ty won many awards for song and dance with the help of Pat Wilson. He trains and competes with Elite Danceworx and his vocal training has been with Irene Ilic. Ty has performed successfully in many vocal festivals and he has enjoyed training on the piano with Eugene Burda. He has been active in local theatre since he was five, playing the lead in Oliver!, Jo Jo in Seussical the Musical, Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz and he performed in the revue Musical Mayhem. Ty most recently played the role of Billy Elliot at the Canon Theatre in Toronto, Canada.

KYLEND HETHERINGTON (Billy), 14, hails from Auburn, Michigan, and most recently played ‘Michael’ and ‘Tall Boy’ in the Broadway production. Later he studied ballet with Giuseppe Canale and Scott Heinrich and tap with Bruce Bradley. In 2009, he participated in the ABT Young Dancer Summer Workshop under full scholarship.

ZACH MANSKE (Billy), 12, is from Woodbury, Minnesota. He began dancing at the age of 8 and quickly learned that dance was his passion. Zach has danced competitively with Woodbury Dance Center and has received numerous top scores and judges’ choice awards. He received the junior national champion title at Starquest (2010) and Masquerade (2011) national dance competitions. Zach loves to perform and is honored to be a part of the Billy Elliot cast. Thanks to Woodbury Dance Center, his friends and family, and his sister Rachel who is his biggest fan.

J.P. VIERNES (Billy), 15, Half Moon Bay, California. National Tour: Billy Elliot (Chicago/Toronto). Regional: South Pacific (Coastal Rep). Hebert was last seen as Commander Khashoggi in the Las Vegas production of We Will Rock You. Broadway and National tours include: the original Broadway companies of The Life, Sunset Boulevard, Les Miserables (Bay Area Critics Award), Cats, Saturday Night Fever, and Rock and Roll the First 5000 Years. He starred as Manuel in MTC's Captains Courageous, Zoser in Elton John's Elaborate Lives in Atlanta, and Warbucks in Papermill Playhouse's Annie. Joel Blum (George) is a two-time Tony nominee in the best supporting actor category for the Prince/Stroman Show Boat and for Steel Pier. He recently played multiple roles in 101 Dalmatians the Musical at Madison Square Garden. He received a Barrymore award for best supporting actor in Tin Pan Alley Rag, was nominated in the same category for a Helen Hayes award for his work in Meet John Doe at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D C. Joel has appeared on "Law & Order" twice, "Ed", the "Sopranos", Danced on the "Sonny and Cher Show", two Bob Hope Specials, and the "Tonight Show" starring Johnny Carson. He has co-written and stars in his one man show about Bob Hope entitled: Hope Eternal.

BEN COOK (Michael),14, joins the tour after a 15-month run on Broadway where he played Tall Boy/Posh Boy and served as the Michael understudy. Performing since the age of 9, he made his professional debut as Tiny Tim in Ford’s Theatre’s A Christmas Carol. He understudied the principal role of Little Boy in the Kennedy Center’s production of Ragtime, and made his Broadway debut in the Tony-nominated production in November 2009. Pittsburgh, PA: As soon as Max Raabe & Palast Orchester enter the stage, 1920s Berlin comes to life in their tour Berlin Nocturne that pays homage to the legendary nocturnal flair of the Weimar Era. “Max Raabe and his 12-piece Palast Orchester are re-creating the music of the Weimar era with verve and class” (Time Out New York). This concert, presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, will be performed on Friday, April 15, at 8:00 p.m., at the Byham Theater, as part of the Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series.

“It's far more than nostalgia - it's almost being there. As Raabe puts it: It's music that pleases, that makes people happy. Between that, and Raabe's own cheeky demeanor, the Palast Orchester epitomizes the elegance of the musical '20s and '30s. As one German critic described it: excellent manners spiked with a touch of decadence" (Daily News).

Founded in 1986 by the charismatic baritone Max Raabe, Max Raabe & Palast Orchester embodies the high style and musical glory of the 20's and 30's and have performed to audiences around the world. Max Raabe captures this timeless music with precision, urgency and irony. A singer of incredible range, he has a singular ability to capture the cunning rasp of the cabaret singer, the confident belcanto hero, the oily melodiousness of the revue beau, the carefree timbre of early jazz, as well as the falsetto of ragtime, all backed by his stellar 12-member band, many of whom have been with him from the beginning. Max Raabe's art lies in revealing the enigmatic intelligence, ambiguity, musical power and complexity of the "German chansons" from the turbulent Weimar Republic. In his performances he keenly reminds us that between melancholy and irony, rebellion and resignation, elegy and slapstick there is often only half a measure, sometimes just a single note, or a mere word.

Over the years, Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester have discovered that one of the secrets of a good show is diversity. Pittsburgh, PA: Since 1945, Ebony has been the heralded, mainstream chronicle of the African American community, covering issues, personalities and interests in a self-affirming manner. A featured Ebony article on dating from the 1980s provides the inspiration for artist Ayanah Moor’s recent project, Good News. Through the use of creative wordplay, Moor offers an alternative commentary on site, desire and eligibility.

Ayanah Moor’s recent print and video works were exhibited at Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, Forja ArteContemporaneo, SPACE, Wexner Center for the Arts, John Hope Franklin Center-Duke University, IceBox Project Space and Columbia College-Chicago, among others. Her work has been published in Critical Inquiry (University of Chicago Press); Black Women, Gender and Families (University of Illinois Press) and Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism (Indiana University Press). Moor’s work is cited in What is Contemporary Art? (The University of Chicago Press), Home Girls Make Some Noise: A Hip Hop Feminism Anthology (Parker Publishing); and Deconstructing Tyrone: A New Look at Black Masculinity in the Hip Hop Generation (Cleis Press). She has held artist residencies at Women’s Studio Workshop, Vermont Studio Center, Blue Mountain Center, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Brandywine Workshop and the Auckland Print Studio. Moor earned a BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University and MFA at Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University

PSIP announces MERRY WIVES and return of “BYOB!”


Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks is proud to announce the start of its 7th season providing the Steel City with FREE Shakespeare plays and events.

Join us for our first BYOB (“Bring Your Own Bard”) monthly reading: “Shakespeare’s Favorites,” Thursday January 27 at the Te Café. BYOB is a once-a-month reading series where fans and performers of Shakespeare come together to enjoy an evening of informal performances of their favorite scenes, sonnets, and monologues. Alan Irvine, local storyteller and PSIP board member, will be the evening’s MC.

BYOB serves as a warm-up for PSIP’s free summer production of MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, a comedy hilariously exploring the themes of marriage, cuckoldry, and revenge. The show will be directed by Tommy Costello and will run FREE in cityparks in September 2011.

Jazz critics agree that “Sweet Poppa Lou” Donaldson is one of the greatest alto saxophonists of all time. He began his career as a bandleader with Blue Note Records in 1952 and, at the age of 25, he found his sound, though it would continue to sweeten over the years -- earning him his famed nickname --“Sweet Poppa Lou.”

He cut a series of classic records for Blue Note in the 50’s that showcased many musicians who made their first records as sidemen for him: Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Grant Green, Blue Mitchell, Donald Byrd, Horace Parlan, and others. After also making some excellent recordings for Cadet and Argo Records in the early 60s, Lou’s return to Blue Note in 1967 was marked by one of his most famous recordings, Alligator Bogaloo. Lou was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters by North Carolina A & T University and a scholarship was established in his name that is awarded to the most gifted jazz musician at North Carolina A & T University each year. He was inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame and is the recipient of countless other honors and awards for his outstanding contributions to jazz, America’s “classical music.”

At 83, he is one of the truly great active figures in hard bop. He continues to tour nationally, playing in New York at the Village Vanguard and twice a year and the Birdland Club. He also attends many jazz festivals and concerts around the world. He still plays with the same power and dexterity of his youth, while bringing a hearty sense of humor to the bandstand. “Blues Walk,” Donaldson’s theme song, as well as “Alligator Boogaloo,” his first big hit in the funk era of the late 1960’s, are always the highlight of every session.

His current quartet features the musical excellence of Randy Johnston on guitar, Pat Bianchi on organ and Fukushi Tainaka on drums.

Pittsburgh, PA: The Toronto indie-rock collective Broken Social Scene is known for the improvisational easiness of its live sets and a steady following on college radio. A Broken Social Scene concert is an effervescent rush of melody, invention and sonic magic. Broken Social Scene with special guest The Wooden Birds will perform at the Byham Theater on Friday, September 8, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. This concert is presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Opus One Productions, as part of the Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series.

Founded ten years ago by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, Broken Social Scene quickly established themselves as one of the vital voices in independent music. Made up of an assortment of musical friends, lovers, and strangers, the band emerged fully-formed from their hometown of Toronto in 2002. They were an instantly engaging energetic entity— a tightly-knit community bursting at the seams with talent and personality. Their albums— which were recently regaled on many “Best of the Decade” lists for the 00’s— are cinematic, critically-acclaimed splashes of concept and melody, marrying a dizzying onslaught of sounds with finely-crafted choruses. The band’s ability to weave a plethora of voices, specific genre elements, and varied instrumentation into a postmodern aural pastiche launched them onto the international stage. Between 2002 and 2009, Broken Social Scene toured everywhere — from Mexico City to Moscow— winning Juno Awards, scoring acclaimed films like Half Nelson, making multiple appearances on late-night television shows, and more. Live, their shows are notoriously epic, cathartic affairs. Broken Social Scene has cemented their status as one of Canada’s most important musical exports. In their newest release (May, 2010) Forgiveness Rock Record the band sings about acceptance and moving on and making amends for past mistakes, like “World Sick” (set amid “a minefield of wounded affection”) and the urgent rocker “Forced to Love” that describes interpersonal anxieties.

On her new album, @#%&* SMILERS, Los Angeles singer songwriter Aimee Mann notes: "I've always been fascinated with eccentric personalities". The Cabaret at Theater Square announces Cabaret for Kathy – a benefit performance

August 8th, 2010

PITTSBURGH – The Cabaret at Theater Square will host a cabaret performance benefitting the Kathy Cecotti Memorial Scholarship Fund. Cabaret for Kathy features pieces from productions Kathy directed as performed by her former students.

Just over one year ago, Kathy Cecotti, beloved theatre teacher and director of Thomas Jefferson High School, lost her five-year battle with brain cancer. Kathy taught at TJHS from 1995-2009 and brought joy to not only the classroom, but also the community as she directed annual theatre productions. She was a remarkable teacher who inspired her students and co-workers daily through her dedication, passion for the arts and her undying optimism.

The Kathy Cecotti Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior of Thomas Jefferson High School annually. The scholarship is maintained by TJ Arts, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, which promotes the arts within the schools and communities of West Jefferson Hills.

Join us to celebrate the life of Kathy Cecotti and pay tribute to her dedication to her students and the arts. Cabaret for Kathy benefits the Kathy Cecotti Memorial Scholarship Fund and is produced by Katie Sauter in association with TJ Arts.

PITTSBURGH, PA: Following a sold-out premiere of faustUS last autumn, 404 Strand brings its raucous reenactment of the myth of Faust to the heart of the Cultural District on July 21-25 and July 28-August 1, 2010. Presented by the Education and Community Engagement Department of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, faustUS is based on the The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe (1604). It is directed by Dan Jemmett and devised by the theatre collective 404 Strand. The performance features Andrew Hachey, John Fitzgerald Jay, Rick Kemp, Molly Simpson and Kristin Slaysman with artistic collaborator Richard Parsakian. faustUS was originally presented by the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater and 404 Strand in association with Pittsburgh Filmmakers with support from the Heinz Endowments, the Pittsburgh Foundation and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.



404 Strand combines theatre makers from the USA, Canada and England, some of whom have worked previously in Pittsburgh on Quantum Theatre productions Dogface, The Collected Works of Billy the Kid and The Museum of Desire. faustUS is a modern retelling of the ancient story of Faust, a man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge and power. Jemmett describes the work as an installment performance, a theatrical experience marked by the immediate and intense proximity of the audience to the performers.



Award –winning international theatre director Dan Jemmett directs at some of Europe’s most highly regarded theatres, including Théâtre de Vidy, Lausanne, the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, The Lyric Hammersmith and The Almeida Opera in London, the Deutsche-Oper-Am-Rhein in Düsseldorf, Holland’s Reisopera , and the Teatro dell’opera in Rome among many others. After being awarded the French critics’ Revelation Théâtral prize in 2002, he was the first British director to be invited to direct at France’s national theatre the Comedie Francaise, where Les Precieuses Ridicules and La Grand Magie have received rave reviews in the European press. His film, Curtains, produced by Warp Films in London, was selected for The Edinburgh Film Festival 2009, and in 2010 he directed Berlioz’s opera Beatrice and Benedict for the Opera Comique in Paris, and Le Donneur de Bain at the Theatre Marigny. In 2011 he will direct Richard III at Poland’s national theatre in Warsaw.



In Pittsburgh, Dan has conceived and directed three highly acclaimed shows for Quantum Theatre. Dogface, his adaptation of The Changeling, was performed in an abandoned steel mill, while The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, a dramatization of Michael Ondaatje’s celebrated book of poems, was presented in a disused porn cinema. Both of these productions were invited to Madrid’s prestigious Festival de Otono, and were followed by The Museum of Desire, a presentation of stories by renowned art historian and writer John Berger that took place in Pittsburgh’s Frick Museum.



Rick Kemp has received numerous awards on both sides of the Atlantic for his work as an actor and director. He has performed with leading British companies Complicite, the Almeida, and The Oxford Playhouse, as well as touring his solo clown show Coming Home worldwide. He was the Artistic Director of London’s Commotion Theatre Company from 1991 to 1998, and collaborated with Nobel Prize-winning playwright Dario Fo on the English language premiere of Mistero Buffo, performing the show at London’s Riverside Studios and Tricycle Theatre and on tour, subsequently receiving the French Government's CROUS Award for Theatre. Work in the USA includes directing Hamlet and RiddleyWalker at The Pittsburgh Playhouse, directing Shrew! and The Comedy of Errors for Unseam'd Shakespeare, and acting in numerous shows for Quantum Theatre, including The Wild Duck, Richard II, I.D., The Crucible, Le Grand Meaulnes, The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, The Museum of Desire, and Cymbeline. His work as a writer and director of new works with Squonk Opera has been supported by awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, and he is the recipient of the 2004 Heinz Endowments Creative Heights Award for his clown show e-lectricity.

New, featured events for the crawl include a live outdoor performance by indie-soul recording artist Eric Roberson on the JazzLive Summer Stage, a break-dancing Block Party at the corner of 9th and Penn and a performance by Chatham Baroque on the rooftop terrace of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
