Judge Jackie Justice – A New Musical Comedy

Writing team of Kooman and Dimond debut Pittsburgh CLO-commissioned work

Pittsburgh, November 6, 2013 – Pittsburgh CLO is pleased to announce that the world premiere of Judge Jackie Justice – A New Musical Comedy will debut at the CLO Cabaret Theater on January 30 and will run through April 27. CMU graduates Michael Kooman and Christopher Dimond are writing the musical, commissioned for the CLO’s Cabaret Theater with dramaturgy by Mary Jane Brennan. The show is conceived and will be directed by Pittsburgh CLO Executive Producer Van Kaplan with choreography by Kiesha Lalama and musical direction by Michael Moricz.

The CLO Cabaret is downtown’s hippest venue for the hottest new shows starring the area’s finest local talent in months-long runs that often extend due to audience demand. As an alternative to Pittsburgh CLO’s large-scale Broadway musicals at the 2800-seat Benedum Center, the CLO Cabaret offers an intimate, less formal environment for theatergoers to take in many first-run, sometimes lesser-known shows. Since its inception in 2004, the CLO Cabaret has produced 12 area premieres and in 2010 its first world premiere, ‘S Wonderful, which after its Pittsburgh debut went on to a successful multi-city tour. Judge Jackie Justice is Pittsburgh CLO’s latest new work.

“We are truly excited to be creating another new musical,” said Executive Producer Van Kaplan, “especially one created for our enthusiastic cabaret audience. Judge Jackie Justice has zany humor and some “breaking the fourth wall” moments in store. I consider the CLO Cabaret to be our “Off-Benedum” venue, like Off-Broadway, though lots more fun because you can eat and drink during the show.”

The musical courtroom of Judge Jackie Justice is now in session at the CLO Cabaret. Behold “real” cases involving zombies, spaceships, furries and more! TV’s hottest Judge relishes in ruling on the personal affairs of people just like you, but what happens when the tables are turned? You won’t “object” to this brand new musical comedy with a book and music by award-winning songwriters Kooman and Dimond, conceived and directed by Van Kaplan.

About the Writing Team
Michael Kooman (music) and Christopher Dimond (book & lyrics) received the 2010 Jonathan Larson Grant and are the first recipients of the Lorenz Hart Award. Between them, they have received the Burton Lane Award, the Harold Adamson Award, the KC/ACTF Musical Theatre Award, a NYFA Fellowship, an Anna Sosenko Grant, and numerous ASCAP Plus awards.

In addition to Judge Jackie Justice, they are currently working on the original musicals The Noteworthy Life of Howard Barnes (developed at the O’Neill Music Theater Conference and the Village Theater) and Orphie & the Book of Heroes (commissioned by the Kennedy Center and set to premiere in February, 2014).

Their first collaboration, Dani Girl (licensed by Samuel French) has been workshopped at the Kennedy Center, American Conservatory Theatre, Cherry Lane Theatre, the ASCAP/Disney Musical Theater Workshop, the Festival of New American Musicals, and was featured in the 2011 NAMT Festival of New Musicals. The show has seen productions in Toronto, Dallas, Boston, and Australia, and is currently enjoying a free, invite-only lab presentation at New York’s Exit, Pursued by a Bear (www.epbb.com).

The duo’s other works include Golden Gate (Williamstown Theatre Festival), Homemade Fusion (London’s Ambassadors Theater, Edinburgh Fringe Festival), the family-friendly Christmas musical Junior Claus (licensed by Dramatic Publishing) and the short film Flour Baby.

Michael and Chris are members of the Dramatists Guild and ASCAP, and are proud alumni of Carnegie Mellon University. They were Dramatists Guild Fellows, received a fellowship at the O’Neill National Music Theater Conference, and attended the Johnny Mercer Songwriting workshop.

PITTSBURGH, PA: Broadway veteran Maureen McGovern comes to Pittsburgh to perform at The Cabaret at Theater Square on Monday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. This performance is part of the TRUST Cabaret Series, presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, which provides the opportunity for audiences to experience some of the finest cabaret acts in the entertainment industry.

Maureen McGovern’s 40-year career has taken her from "The Disaster Theme Queen" to "The Stradivarius Voice" with a voice that defies categorization. Maureen’s recording career began with the Oscar-winning International Gold Records “The Morning After” (Billboard #1) and “We May Never Love Like This Again” from the classic disaster films, The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno. Other hits include "Can You Read My Mind" from Superman and "Different Worlds" from the TV series Angie.

Ms. McGovern made her Broadway debut in 1981 as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance; starred as Luisa Contini in Nine with Raul Julia; as Polly Peachum in 3 Penny Opera with Sting and as Marmee in her Drama Desk nominated role in Little Women, The Musical. She is currently touring her musical memoir Carry It On.

Pittsburgh, PA • August 14, 2013 – Pittsburgh CLO is pleased to announce the cast of the highly anticipated return of Plaid Tidings to the CLO Cabaret, November 7 – January 12.  The cast features an exciting mix of Pittsburgh CLO veterans and newcomers to the CLO Cabaret.

Cast & Creative Team
Billy Hepfinger (Smudge) returns to the CLO Cabaret after appearing in this summer's Side by Side by Sondheim. A graduate of Princeton and a proud Pittsburgh native, Mr. Hepfinger’s local credits include the Pittsburgh CLO (A Musical Christmas Carol, Young Washington), Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theater (Three Sisters, Ivanov), Pittsburgh Musical Theater (The Sound of Music, Hairspray), City Theatre (2011 Young Playwrights Festival), the REP/Pittsburgh Playhouse (Antarktikos), and Carnivale Theatrics (Next to Normal). NYC: workshop of Tamar of the River (Prospect Theater Company). You can also see Mr. Hepfinger in Pittsburgh Public Theater's upcoming production of Company.

Brandon Lambert (Jinx) is a recent graduate of Point Park University making his CLO Cabaret debut. Other Pittsburgh credits include Pittsburgh Public Theater's Born Yesterday, Pittsburgh Musical Theater's Legally Blonde,and Point Park University's Illyria.  Beyond performing, Brandon also enjoys writing music; he recently received the Anna Sosenko Grant for his musical Another World (book by Annick Dall), and his recent theatre-for-young-audiences show, Beauty Can't Sleep, was commissioned and produced by Gretna Theater this past summer.

Quinn Patrick Shannon (Sparky) returns to the CLO Cabaret after appearing in A Grand Night for Singing.  He is a graduate of Point Park University and has appeared in Assassins, The Rover, Robin Hood, Alice in Wonderland and Hair. His regional credits include roles with Theatreworks USA, West Virginia Public, Pittsburgh Musical Theater, Stage 62 and Little Lake.

Eric Longo (Understudy) recently appeared in Chicago the Musical on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas andSouth Pacific at Delaware Theatre Company. Other companies include Quantum Theatre, Attack Theatre and Media Theatre. He earned his BFA from Carnegie Mellon and his Master of Music from Rice University.

Guy Stroman (Director & Choreographer) directed and choreographed Forever Plaid for the inaugural production of the CLO Cabaret.  He also directed and choreographed that show for the fifth anniversary of the theater, as well as the first production of Plaid Tidings the following season.  He has directed numerous productions of plays and musicals around the country and in New York, including: Driving Miss Daisy and The Glass Menagerie, both staring Sandy Duncan,” The King and I, starring Lou Diamond Phillips (Best Director Award), Twelfth Night, Loot(Best Production Award), 1776 (Best Director Award), Man of La Mancha (Audience Favorite Award), andShakespeare’s R&J, to name a few.  Mr. Stroman originated the role of Frankie in the original Forever Plaid in New York, London’s West End, and Los Angeles, where he won the L.A. Drama Critics Award for Best Actor.

Michael Moricz (Music Director) is active in the fields of orchestral, theater, dance and television music as a composer, arranger, conductor and pianist.   He was the second Music Director (from 1996 until Fred Rogers' death) for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on PBS, and has also contributed original music for television productions on the Fox, Disney, Showtime, Discovery and PBS networks. Mr. Moricz has arranged material for Renee Fleming, John Lithgow, Tommy Tune, Chita Rivera, Kander & Ebb, the "Three Mo' Tenors," Linda Lavin, Thomas Hampson, Michele Lee, Gary Beach, Kevin Glavin, Glory Crampton, David Budway, Opie Bellas and many others. He has done special dance arrangements for Chita Rivera, Tommy Tune, Lee Roy Reams, Vivian Reed and for choreographers Tony Stevens, Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Tomé Cousin, David Bell, Syrie Moskowitz & Kiesha Lalama.  His past work also includes the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, Virginia Symphony, the Hamilton Philharmonic, music festivals in Kansas and Aspen and the Kennedy Center Orchestra at Wolf Trap, where he has conducted his own music.  Mr. Moricz has been the long-time arranger/music director of The Gene Kelly Awards annually for Pittsburgh CLO, and has performed similar duties annually for The Tommy Tune Awards (Houston Theater Under The Stars) and The Capitol Awards (Raleigh, NC).  He has music directed the National High School Musical Theatre Awards on Broadway since the program’s inception in 2009.  In addition to much post-scoring in the recording studio, Michael arranged & produced the celebrated children's CD "Time to Sing" and Opie Bellas' CD, "Live for Life."

Andy Ostrowski (Lighting Designer) Mr. Ostrowski recently designed Side By Side By Sondheim, You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up! and A Grand Night for Singing for Pittsburgh CLO, Bolero for PSO, PNME's summer season, August Osage County for The Rep at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, Rigoletto for Pittsburgh Opera and City Theatre’s POP. National credits include: The Asolo, Virginia Stage Company, North Shore Music Theatre, Merrimack Repertory, Arden Theatre, Spoleto Festival USA, Dallas Summer Musicals, Theater of the Stars, Madison Opera and others. International: productions in Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, France, and touring all of Western Europe.

Tim Brady (Production Stage Manager) returns for his tenth season as PSM at the CLO Cabaret. As an actor, he has appeared in 11 productions of Pittsburgh CLO’s A Musical Christmas Carol and various summer season productions with PCLO. Other local theaters that Mr. Brady has performed with include The Pittsburgh Pops, Starlight Productions, The New Pittsburgh Jewish Theatre, Stage Right and The Theater Factory. Mr. Brady was also the managing director of the Conley Inn Dinner Theater in Irwin for 17 years. Tim also starred in the Jason Coll television pilot, “Munhall.”

Meet the Cavemen
Defending the Caveman opens August 1

The Cast:
Vince Valentine (Caveman August 1 – September 8)
Pittsburgh audiences first fell in love with Vince when he starred as the Caveman at the CLO Cabaret in 2011.  A Philadelphia native, Vince made his stage debut when he was 11 years old at his cousin Anthony’s First Holy Communion with his now legendary comedy bit “Uncle Dominic at the Racetrack“. Fast forward to his 30s, and after taking Paul J. Solari’s Stand-Up Comedy Workshop, Vince began performing at comedy clubs along the east coast.

Vince has starred as Christopher and toured throughout the United States in “The Soapranos,” an interactive parody of the HBO TV series. Vince has also starred in “Joey and Maria’s Italian Wedding” and “The Godfathers’ Meshuggener Wedding.”

Vince was selected from 1,500 actors as one of five finalists for NBC10′s “Best Summer Gig Ever Traffic Contest”. He also made a guest appearance on “NBC 10! Live” as a panel guest soon after.  He appeared in the independent film that he co-wrote and starred in, “Shut Up And Eat.” Vince was a finalist in Philadelphia’s 93.3 WMMR’s “Philly’s Last Comic Standing” and appeared in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival as a member of the Sketch Comedy Troupe “Skitzoids.” Vince appeared with the Brick Playhouse in their production of Flip The Script and in New York’s Midtown International Theatre Festival starring in What Fools We Lovers Be.

John Venable (Caveman September 11- October 20)
John makes his Pittsburgh CLO debut and has been acting professionally since 2003 when he appeared in a production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” at the Flower Mound Performing Arts Theatre in suburban Dallas.  He has worked at several Dallas/Fort Worth theatres including Contemporary Theatre of Dallas, WaterTower Theatre, Circle Theatre, Theater Three, One Thirty Productions, Uptown Players, Lyric Stage, Plano Rep, Garland Civic Theatre and the aforementioned FMPAT. Some favorite roles include Geoffrey in The Sisters Rosensweig, Andy Gorski in Greetings, Corky inLuann Hampton, Charles in Blithe Spirit, and numerous characters in A Lone Star Christmas Carol. He has been nominated and won several theatre awards in DFW.

John has also appeared in an episode of “Friday Night Lights,” several short films, and has been a shill in several regional/national commercials. In addition to acting, John also writes, produces, and directs short films, web series, and even has a feature film, “Karma Police,” under his belt.

About the Show:
Defending the Caveman is a hilariously insightful play about the ways men and women relate.  This prehistoric look at the battle of the sexes is full of wonderful scenarios that celebrate the differences between men and women, making it a perfect entertainment option for couples, or girls’ night out. The show has also been seen and recommended by thousands of marriage and family therapists and counselors, for its humorous look at the inherent differences between the sexes.

Written by comedian Rob Becker over a three-year period during which he made an informal study of anthropology, prehistory, psychology, sociology and mythology, Defending the Caveman played for two and a half years on Broadway, making it the longest running solo play in Broadway’s history.  Caveman has won the hearts of millions across the globe.  Translated into 18 languages Caveman has performed in more than 46 countries to date!

Plaid Tidings offers the best of Forever Plaid tied-up in a nifty package with a big Christmas bow on top! Filled with holiday standards that have all been “Plaid-erized,” our boys are back to do their Christmas Special. At first they aren't sure why they've returned, but a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world.

Sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites like their riotous three minute and eleven second version of “The Ed Sullivan Show” - this time featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys Choir, and a Plaid Caribbean Christmas which puts the “Day-O” in Excelsis! A cast of four men ages 20’s to 30’s that can sing close, four-part harmony in the style of the “guy groups” of the late 1950s/early 1960s (The Four Lads, The Hi-Los, The Four Aces); the style is not do-wop or 50s-60s rock.  The solo material is in the style of the popular singers of that period (i.e. Perry Como, Johnny Mathis).

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the upcoming Gallery Crawl to take place Friday, April 26, 2013, from 5:30-9:00 p.m., in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. The Gallery Crawl is an urban showcase featuring a wide variety of thought provoking art exhibitions, live bands, DJs, dance, theater, and more. Everything from the traditional to the avant garde is on display for art lovers of all ages.

“There are 36 stops in locations throughout the Cultural District, filled with new exhibits, exciting performances and interesting activities to enjoy. Keep the fun going and stay after the Crawl for free Salsa Friday at Cabaret Theater Square,” comments Darcy Kucenic, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust-Manager of Education and Operations.   To name just a few of the highlights: Memento Mori in Tito & Exchange Way; Community Supported Art, a preview of the new series from the New Hazlett Theater at 937 Liberty Avenue; craft making-origami magnolias with Office of Public Art at Magnolias for Pittsburgh, 7thStreet & Penn Avenue; and Pittsburgh Public Schools All-City Visual Arts and Music Showcase at the Trust Arts Education Center and August Wilson Center.  Night Market IV, sponsored by Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, at the 8th Street & Penn Avenue Parking Lot, will offer food, art vendors, music and dance.

Pittsburgh, Pa: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and BNY Mellon JazzLive series present the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra “On the Road” at the Cabaret at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh, on Tuesday, October 2. at  8:00 p.m.  Tickets ($20) are on sale at the Theater Square Box Office, 655 Penn Avenue, by phone at 412-456-6666, and online at trustarts.org. Bank of New York Mellon, the New Pittsburgh Courier, and Pittsburgh Jazz Society are sponsors the JazzLive series.

This season, the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra will be "on the road," performing at a variety of venues around the Pittsburgh area. The Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, led by Artistic Director, Sean Jones, will be comprised of a slightly different configuration than the usual big band. Jones says, “this season it’s time for PJO to spread its wings and share America’s indigenous art form throughout the region.” The band will also perform original compositions by Associate Artistic Director, Mike Tomaro.

Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President and Director of Jazz Programs with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, comments, “The Cultural Trust has become the largest supporter of local jazz musicians in the region through our weekly JazzLive series, as well as special engagements and educational programs. We are thrilled that the PJO decided to make their first stop “on the road” at the Cabaret Theater”.

In addition to performing in the Cabaret, the PJO have developed a musical component, with artist educator, Alison Babusci, for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s PNC Grow Up Great Arts Program. The activities are geared towards preschoolers, and will serve the students that attend the downtown Pittsburgh daycare centers. Complete with multicolored kazoos, the children will “Jam” with the band on Tuesday, October 9 in the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Education Center, 805-807 Liberty Avenue, and again for a special Holiday Junior Jam Session.
