Pittsburgh, PA ̶   Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, presents Theatreworks USA’s Skippyjon Jones from October 19 ̶ 26, 2014, at six performance locations throughout the area.  Tickets go on sale September 8th at 9:00am.

“A popular book brought to life on stage opens our season and we are excited to host this award-winning theater company so that children and families throughout the region can experience live professional performances in their neighborhood,” commented Pamela K. Lieberman, Manager of Children’s Programming from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Executive Director of Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater.

Theatreworks USA’s Skippyjon Jones, based on the book of same title by Judy Schachner, is an enchanting musical for younger audiences that tells a story about unleashing your powerful imagination and following your dreams.  Devanand Janki is the director and choreographer for this current tour.  The scenery is designed by Rob Odorisio, with costumes by Tracy Christensen and features a libretto and lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila (Drama Desk nominee for ALTAR BOYZ and Theatreworks USA’s Click, Clack, Moo!).  Theatreworks USA’s Skippyjon Jones was nominated for a 2013 Lucille Lortel Award in the Outstanding Musical category.  This 60-minute musical is recommended for ages 4 and up.

Skippyjon Jones tells the tale of a Siamese cat with big dreams and an even bigger will to be anything but a cat! “Holy guacamole,” Skippyjon exclaims. “My ears are too big for my head, my head is too big for my body. I am not a Siamese cat – I am a CHIHUAHUA!” Take an adventurous ride as Skippyjon Jones struggles to find himself and is faced with one of the biggest decision of his life; will he help save his “fellow” Chihuahua’s or will he soon realize that he may be the wimpy little Siamese cat that he’s been hiding from.

Pittsburgh, PA— The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents one of the greatest contemporary voices of our time, Linda Eder, at the Cabaret at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. This performance is part of the TRUST Cabaret Series, presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. This series provides a unique and intimate opportunity for audiences to experience the finest cabaret acts in the entertainment industry.

Linda Eder’s diverse repertoire spans Broadway, standards, pop, country, and jazz. As the tragic character “Lucy” in the Broadway musical JEKYLL & HYDE, from composer Frank Wildhorn, Eder blew the roof off of New York’s Plymouth Theatre each night as she belted out signature songs “Someone Like You” and “A New Life.”  Ms. Eder was rewarded with a Drama Desk nomination for her Broadway debut.

Born in Tucson, Arizona, and raised in Brainerd, Minnesota, Linda Eder began her career singing in her home state and eventually landed a gig at Harrah’s Casino in Atlantic City. But it was her appearances on the 1987 season of Star Search, where she won for an unprecedented 12 weeks, which attracted the attention of audiences and record companies alike. Ms. Eder launched her recording career in 1991 with her self-titled debut album and soon established a vital niche as America’s most popular and acclaimed new interpreter of pop standards and theatrical songs with 15 solo albums and 12 musical recordings.

Linda Eder has performed at many prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Town Hall, The Kennedy Center, Davies Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Wolftrap and the Ravinia Festival. Always touring in good company, her collaborations include the late Oscar-winning composer and pianist Marvin Hamlisch, Tony-winner Michael Feinstein and Keith Lockhart, conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

ANNOUNCES LOTTERY TICKET POLICY

PERFORMANCES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 23 AT HEINZ HALL

Pittsburgh, PA– THE BOOK OF MORMON, winner of nine Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, is pleased to announce a lottery ticket policy for the National Tour, which begins Tuesday, September 23 at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, PA and plays a limited two week engagement through Sunday, October 5, 2014.  In Pittsburgh, the production will conduct a pre-show lottery at the Box Office at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, making a limited number of tickets available at $25 per ticket.

The wildly popular lottery for the Broadway production has attracted as many as 800 entries at some performances.  The producers of THE BOOK OF MORMON are pleased to offer low-priced lottery seats for every city on the National Tour.  

Entries will be accepted at the Box Office at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, beginning two and a half hours prior to each performance; each person will print their name and the number of tickets (1 or 2) they wish to purchase on a card that is provided. Two hours before curtain, names will be drawn at random for a limited number of tickets priced at $25 each. Only one entry is allowed per person. Cards are checked for duplication prior to drawing. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing and show valid ID to purchase tickets. Limit one entry per person and two tickets per winner. Tickets are subject to availability.

Pittsburgh, PA—  The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces single tickets go on sale, Friday, August 29, at 9AM, for the 2014–2015 Pittsburgh Dance Council season.  Pittsburgh Dance Council is a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.  All performances will take place at the Byham Theater located at 101 6th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

The 2014–2015 Pittsburgh Dance Council Season includes the following six performances.  Also, two special dance events presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust: Royal Ballet of Cambodia and Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host are additional recommendations to dance patrons.

The rebellious sensibilities of British dance iconoclast Michael Clark have catapulted him to the forefront of innovative contemporary dance. A rising star on the international dance scene, Swedish choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker Pontus Lidberg has created more than 35 works for major dance companies such as Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, SemperOper Ballet Dresden, Morphoses, and his own company, Pontus Lidberg Dance. His brand-new work, Snow, is a turbulent choreographic composition set in a ceaseless snowfall. The choreography presents a poetic look at the fragile human reality of existence, in contrast to the relentless power of nature. Four world-class dancers, including Lidberg himself, will take the stage together with a lifelike, highly expressive Japanese-style Bunraku puppet to tell a dynamic and poetic story of human experience.

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents Fragments, Fractals: Write It, Print It, Sew It, an exhibition of story quilts by artist Tina Williams Brewer. The exhibition is on view September 12–November 16, 2014, at the Trust’s 709 Penn Gallery. An opening reception and artist talk take place September 12, 2014, from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

Brewer’s ten quilts—with titles such as Natural Migration, Cosmic Endeavors, and Rosetta Stone—tell stories of the natural movement of migration, from a simple view of water migration to a more complicated visual approach to forced migration. The layered, overlapping, and decorative imagery is achieved through quilting fabrics that have been printed with Brewer’s designs.

“Everything gets lost in the movement of migration,” Brewer says. “In order to simplify so that we may understand, there is a need to peel back the layers and explore the beginnings of the original water currents.”

As an artistic inspiration, Brewer used fragments of novelist John Edgar Wideman’s “Cry In” from Briefs: Stories for the Palm of the Mind and Rachel Goldstein’s poetry to inform her work. The inspiration from both artists are in integral part of the exhibition.

Tina Williams Brewer is known for her artistic exploration of African-American history and the personal experiences associated with it. She uses symbolism, textile, and fabrics to create story quilts that are motivated by issues focusing on family, women and children, and the spirituality of the culture. Her work has been displayed internationally at the United States Embassy in Ghana, and in more than 50 major venues across the United States, including Tampa Museum of Art and Science, Tampa, FL; Heinz Regional History Center, Pittsburgh, PA; African American Museum, Philadelphia, PA; African American Museum, Dallas, TX; Reginald Lewis Museum of African American Art in Baltimore, MD; and Huntington Museum of Art, Huntington, WV. Brewer is a member of the Fiber Arts Guild of Pittsburgh, Women of Visions, Inc., and an emeritus board member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, and she earned a bachelor of arts from Columbus College of Art and Design.

New Orleans native Trombone Shorty began his career as a bandleader at the young age of six, toured internationally at age 12, and spent his teens playing with various brass bands throughout New Orleans and touring worldwide with Lenny Kravitz. He is currently the front man for his own ensemble Orleans Avenue, a funk/rock/jazz/hip-hop band. Together, Trombone Shorty and the band have toured across the U.S., Europe, Australia, Russia, Japan and Brazil. In 2010, Trombone Shorty released his debut album, the Grammy®-nominated "Backatown," followed by "For True" in 2011, which topped Billboard magazine's Contemporary Jazz Chart for 12 weeks. His newest album, "Say That to This," was released in 2013 and features funk/jazz elements of New Orleans.

Trombone Shorty appeared in several episodes of HBO's Treme, and has recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Conan. In 2012, he performed at the White House in honor of Black History Month with music royalty such as B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck and Booker T. Jones. At this year's Grammy Awards, he performed alongside Madonna, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Mary Lambert.

In 2012, he received the President's Medal from Tulane University in recognition of his charitable work with the Trombone Shorty Foundation. In collaboration with New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, the Trombone Shorty Foundation donates quality instruments to schools across New Orleans.

SEPTEMBER 13 CONCERT WITH BEATLEMANIA NOW AND INTRODUCTION OF

DICESARE’S NEW MEMOIR BOOK COMPLETES BEATLES WEEK TRIBUTE

Pittsburgh, PA—Fifty years ago, the Beatles came to America…. and made their only Pittsburgh appearance at the Civic Arena on September 14, 1964.  Legendary concert promoter Pat DiCesare, who brought the band to Pittsburgh for its historic performance, will reprise his role by hosting a series of events, including a tribute concert featuring Beatlemania Now, on September 13th at 8pm, at the Benedum Center.

This event is presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust in collaboration with Pat DiCesare Productions, LLC.  Tickets start at $36.95 and are available at www.TrustArts.org, by calling 412-456-6666, or in person at Theater Square Box Office, 655 Penn Avenue.

“The impact of the Beatles cannot be overstated,” said DiCesare. “The Fab Four startled the ears and energized the lives of virtually all who heard them.  Their arrival triggered the musical revolution of the sixties, introducing a modern sound and viewpoint that parted ways with the world of the previous decade.”

The American Tour ’64, the name of DiCesare’s tribute concert featuring Beatlemania Now, will feature all the classic Beatle’s hits live with a full stage, light and multimedia show.  “Imagine it is Saturday night, September 14, 1964 and you are part of an audience of more than 12,000, watching four mop-topped kids from Liverpool, England perform live on the stage of the Civic Arena,” said DiCesare.  “Imagine further that you are able to fast-forward the rest of the 1960’s, with all of its turbulent history, while the Beatles mature from bubblegum tunes like 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' and 'She Loves You' into a band that reflects the social consciousness of the decade with 'Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,' 'Abbey Road' and 'Let It Be.'”

That, said DiCesare, is Beatlemania Now, a show starring Scot Arch (as John Lennon), Chris Colon (as George Harrison), Eric Smith (as Ringo Starr), and Davey Justice (as Paul McCartney), with a performance that dusts off the cobwebs to recall teens screaming from the balcony of the Civic Arena and other theaters across the United States.

“The Beatles explosion onto the American musical landscape is one of the most spectacular events in music history,” said DiCesare.  “And through the magic that is Beatlemania Now, the audience can become a part of that history 50 years later.”

The show begins with the memorable youthful exuberance and scrubbed clean faces of the young Beatles as the band sings the original hits without a care in the world while—as if from an old copy of Life Magazine—scenes from the 1960’s are projected on a screen above the stage.  Beatlemania Now brings historic scenes to life and just like the original musicians; the stage band matures from the teen heart throbs of 1964 into the most important band of the 20th Century.

Beatlemania Now runs the gamut of songs from the early days to 'Strawberry Fields Forever,' 'Here Comes The Sun,' 'Come Together,' 'All You Need Is Love,' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,' 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,' 'Hey Jude,' 'Penny Lane,' and a special tribute to Lennon’s later solo work 'Imagine.'

“For many weaned on Nirvana and Green Day, this is an exhilarating history lesson about the triumphs, the tragedies and the music of the 60’s that you don’t want to miss,” said DiCesare.
This show will also include tribute acts of musicians that influenced the Beatles including Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and Elvis Presley.  

The Beatles 50th Anniversary Week of September 5-14 will also include The Beatles Rock Art Show, a traveling art exhibit featuring more than 150 framed drawings, paintings, animation, and album art as well as other authentic art forms from rock artists including McCartney and Starr, will be on display September 5, 6, and 7.  The art show will also feature Ron Campbell, an artist and animator of the motion picture Yellow Submarine and the Beatles cartoon series.  Art viewings are free and open to the public and will be held at the Renaissance Hotel, located at 107 Sixth Street, downtown Pittsburgh.

“The Beatles changed my life and their arrival in Pittsburgh started my 40 year concert promotion career,” said DiCesare.  “The Beatles came into our lives at a time when we needed them, the talk about war, love and loss.”

In a career that lasted less than a decade, the Beatles changed the course of rock and roll and popular music.  After launching the British Invasion of the United States and scoring twenty Number One hits, the Beatles went on to indulge their creative energies in the studio, layering sounds and crafting songs, in a way that was experimental yet still accessible.  This retreat from the ceaseless mayhem of pop celebrity yielded such musically expansive and lyrically sophisticated albums as Rubber Soul (1965) and Revolver (1966).  The group retired from touring in August 1966, and ten months later, they released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, an album that has almost universally been cited as the creative apotheosis of rock and roll, a watershed event in which rock became “serious art” without losing its sense of humor.  The group continued to break new ground with the White Album and Abbey Road before calling it quits in 1970.  All of the band members went on to successful solo careers.  The Beatles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Six-part miniseries will take viewers behind-the-scenes of 

some of the most beloved Broadway Musicals  

Pittsburgh, PA:  Broadway Across America has announced that ANNIE, DIRTY DANCING, PIPPIN, Disney’s NEWSIES and MOTOWN THE MUSICAL will be featured on Lifetime® Television’s award-winning morning show “The Balancing Act®” as part of the six part series “Broadway Balances America.”

“Broadway Balances America” segments will air on “The Balancing Act®” as follows, ANNIE will air on August 12 and 19; DIRTY DANCING will air on September 9 & 16; PIPPIN will air on October 29 and November 5; Disney’s NEWSIES will air on November 6 and 13; and MOTOWN THE MUSICAL will air on November 8 and 25.

“Broadway Balances America” will provide exclusive behind-the-scenes excerpts and interviews with ANNIE, DIRTY DANCING, PIPPIN, Disney’s NEWSIES and MOTOWN THE MUSICAL casts, creatives and crews, even experiencing what it’s like to dance in their shoes.

 Host Olga Villaverde had the time of her life when she traveled to Orlando and danced with “Johnny Castle,” the star of DIRTY DANCING.  She even learned the iconic leap that stole people’s hearts in the original movie classic. Balancing Act correspondent Amber Milt hit the boards on Broadway for a unique look at MOTOWN THE MUSICAL, Disney’s NEWSIES, ANNIE and PIPPIN.

Amber Milt goes backstage for a “Supreme” transformation at MOTOWN THE MUSICAL, which tells the behind-the-hits story of Motown founder Berry Gordy and the launch of legendary girl group The Supremes, The Jackson Five and more. Disney’s NEWSIES, the smash-hit, crowd-pleasing new musical, tells the true and captivating story of the 1899 newsboys’ strike and a band of underdogs who fight for what’s right while staying true to themselves.  The segment focuses on Disney’s new national campaign, the “Get Up and Go!” program, which promotes fun ways for kids to lead more active and healthier lifestyles through NEWSIES' Tony Award® winning choreography and music.  The ANNIE segment puts a spotlight on young kids (and their parents) going through the audition process to show what it takes to play one of Broadway’s most cherished roles in the iconic musical about everyone’s favorite orphan.  PIPPIN takes us into a captivating world of aerial acrobatics and temptation in this brand new Tony Award® winning production in which a young prince must decide whether he should risk it all in a blaze of glory or choose a simpler path as he searches for the meaning of life.
