Quantum Theatre's The Golden Dragon in Highland Park

The Golden Dragon

By Roland Schimmelpfennig
Translated by David Tushingham
Directed by Karla Boos
August 2–August 26, 2012
LOCATION: Lake Carnegie in Highland Park

A beautiful giant cricket is exploited by an ant, stewardesses 30,000 feet in the air speak to boat people in the Atlantic, a tooth lands in a bowl of soup, and a dead boy is carried thousands of miles home on a river. Wielding a dreamlike kaleidoscope, making and remaking connections that span the globe, Schimmelpfennig tells The Golden Dragon’s tragicomic tale of globalization. It’s set in your local takeout, wherever it and whomever you might be.

Brownsville Ducky Race Part of Mon's History

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 23

Can't Duck the Facts: Aug. 4 Race
Part of Mon's History

BROWNSVILLE, Pa. – Putting the spirit of the 1930s-era late comic Joe Penner's famous line, "Wanna buy a duck," to practical use, Brownsville's annual Ducky Race has transitioned from a simple fund raiser to a highly anticipated event – and the only one of its type on the Monongahela River.

Come Aug. 4, Brownsville Area Revitalization Corp. will mark its fourth annual Ducky Race, which was patterned after hundreds of other races worldwide and fine-tuned locally to establish a fund raiser that the community could embrace.

"We wanted to use our existing resources … the wharf, Inter-County Bridge and the water," recalls Tracy Zivkovich, a member of BARC and Brownsville Borough Council. "And, we wanted to establish something that would be fun for all ages."

Zivkovich, who also chairs the Blueprint Communities Committee, decided after the first year to ratchet up the interest by adding a community festival, which is co-sponsored with the borough and BARC.

A plan emerged to pencil the two events on the first Saturday after Kennywood Days, which traditionally takes place on the first Thursday in August. The timing was viewed as logistically ideal because former residents from all corners of the world are home that week to spend time with families and friends at reunions, Kennywood and other special events.  Brownsville's Kennywood Days is marking its 99th consecutive year.

The one-eighth mile Ducky Race course takes about an hour to set up, a task that belongs to Zivkovich's husband, Mickey, and son, Christopher. Floating rope and floating pool noodles are laid V-shaped in the river from the Inter-County Bridge to the boat slips at Brownsville Riverside Wharf. The first three ducks to reach the end are the winners. The same panel of honorary judges has served each year: Brownsville Mayor Lester Ward and council members Charlie Perkins and Ross Swords.

"People were really amazed when we did it," Zivkovich recalls. "The best part for me is seeing everyone there, jockeying for position on the wharf for an event that, at times, could last only 10 or 15 minutes."

Despite the seeming ease of the event, BARC members start selling tickets about three weeks in advance and preparing for the 3:30 p.m. race day drop of hundreds of yellow rubber ducks into the Mon. Each duck sports a number that corresponds to a ticket.  Ducky Race tickets will be available at the festival or can be purchased in advance at BARC's office in the Flatiron Building, 69 Market St.

Making an appearance for the third year are corporate ducks, which has hyped interest and competition
among local businesses. Last year, 12 corporate ducks were all decked out for the event.  To date, sponsorships have been secured by Lee's Plumbing & Excavating Inc. of Uniontown, Monongahela Valley Hospital, PNC Bank, Local 286 of the Construction & General Laborers Union, Fayette Podiatry Associates, Rohland Patt & Rohland of Brownsville, Grindstone Foodland, Sheehan's Automotive & Machines Inc. of Brownsville.

"I've not seen corporate ducks any place else," says Zivkovich, who credits her years of fund-raising involvement with triggering the idea. "People love to gamble. It created some competition and another opportunity."

The annual Ducky Race requires approvals from the Pennsylvania Fish & Game Commission and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. And as the committee has learned through the years, the current can be optimized by closing the Maxwell locks and opening the Charleroi pool.

Because BARC's Ducky Race is the only one on the Mon, it has etched Brownsville into the history books of rubber duck races worldwide. The first race in the U.S. was held in 1991 in Aspen, Colo., and the largest remains Pennsylvania's neighbor to the West, Cincinnati, where the Rubber Duck Regatta last year topped 100,000 ducks after 18 years of building momentum.

BARC's second year – 2009 – still holds the local record: 850 yellow rubber ducks.  "I'd like to sell all 1,000 ducks," Zivkovich says. "That would be really great."

Ivanov Continues PICT's Chekhov Celebration

AMERICAN PREMIERE OF TOM STOPPARD’S HILARIOUS NEW ADAPTATION OF IVANOV CONTINUES PICT’S CHEKHOV CELEBRATION - OPENING AUGUST 4th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Media Contact: Michelle Belan
Marketing Director Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre mbelan@picttheatre.org
412-561-6000 x203

Pittsburgh, PA – July 23, 2012. PICT’s celebration of Anton Chekhov continues with the American premiere of Tom Stoppard’s hilarious new adaptation of Chekhov’s early play, Ivanov. Directed by Andrew S. Paul, this production features David Whalen in the title role, Nike Doukas as his ailing wife Anna, Alan Stanford as his aristocratic uncle Count Shabelsky, Matt DeCaro as his scheming estate manager Borkin, Helena Ruoti as neighbor Zinaida Lebedev, Martin Giles as her husband Pavel Lebedev, and introducing Katya Stepanova as Sasha. The show runs from August 2- 25 in The Charity Randall Theatre, Oakland. Ivanov portrays the life of a man trapped by his own inaction. Hamlet-like, he leaves those around him struggling to find satisfaction. Chekhov’s irrepressible Russian humor combines with the tragedy of the human condition, and all is filtered through Tom Stoppard’s uniquely zany perspective. The result is a powerful, often hilarious play that will keep audiences thinking long after the curtain closes.  Many in this cast of 19 also play roles in the three other festival productions, Three Sisters, After Chekhov and Funny Chekhov.

Andrew S. Paul selected Ivanov in part because Tom Stoppard’s brilliant adaptation rescues this early play from obscurity. “No longer can this masterpiece be considered a lesser work. Stoppard recognized the humor woven throughout the play, staying true to Chekhov’s original text but bringing the characters and their words alive for contemporary audiences.” This production marks the U.S. premiere of Stoppard’s adaptation.

ADDITIONAL FESTIVAL OFFERINGS:

Harriet Power, director of Three Sisters, which opened July 19, 2012 and runs through August 26th, chose Paul Schmidt’s distinctly American translation for similarly humorous reasons. “He understood how funny Chekhov often is – and his translation is indispensable for me, as a director, in mining the superb humor that’s often missed, even when tragedy strikes.” Three Sisters features Nike Doukas, Allison McLemore and Vera Varlamov as sisters Olga, Masha and Irina; Christian Conn as brother Andrei, David Whalen as Vershinin and Joe Domencic as Masha’s husband Kulygin. Megan McDermott, Leo Marks, Jonathan Visser, Larry John Meyers, Adrian Blake Enscoe, Billy Hepfinger, Robert Haley, Colette Freiwald and Grace Ellen complete the cast.

Irish playwright Brian Friel, a frequent adapter of Chekhov’s work, is featured in the festival’s After Chekhov. In Afterplay, Martin Giles and Helena Ruoti portray Chekhov characters from Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya decades into the future; working from Chekhov’s famous short story, “The Lady with the Lapdog,” Friel imagined two characters who meet on holiday in The Yalta Game. (starring Jonathan Visser and Allison McLemore.)

Funny Chekhov celebrates Chekhov’s wit in 5 short plays and vaudevilles: The Bear, The Proposal, Swan Song, Drama: A Comedy, and On the Evils of Tobacco. These neglected gems of the theatre are served up by our talented repertory cast, including Pittsburgh’s own James FitzGerald, Larry John Meyers, Terry Wickline, Colette Freiwald and Joe Domencic, as well as recent Pittsburgh transplant and PICT artist-in-residence  Alan Stanford.

THE REPERTORY COMPANY:

The festival repertory company includes celebrated Pittsburgh actors David Whalen and Martin Giles, who most recently graced the PICT stage as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in PICT’s The Mask of Moriarty, and Helena Ruoti, PICT’s Cleopatra in last season’s Antony and Cleopatra.  Nike Doukas returns to PICT, where she last appeared in House & Garden.  She is the recipient of the 2011 Lunt-Fontanne fellowship and is widely known for her recurring role on "Desperate Housewives." Irish stage legend Alan Stanford is PICT’s 2012 Artist in Residence.  Jonathan Visser recently played Sylvia in CLO Cabaret’s Ruthless. Larry John Meyers (fresh off the success of PICT’s The Pitmen Painters) Robert Haley, whose numerous credits include performances in Canada’s Shaw and Stratford festivals, and PICT’s 2011 Actor-in-Residence  Leo Marks are also featured.

Allison McLemore returns to PICT for her third season; she previously starred in PICT productions Jane Eyre and Othello. Vera Varlamov is making her professional debut at PICT.  She was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and received her MFA from Rutgers. Matt DeCaro’s previous PICT credits include King Lear and The Lieutenant of Inishmore; he has worked in film and on television, including a recurring role for two seasons on “Prison Break.” Christian Conn is in his first season with PICT, but recently played Orlando in As You Like It at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre. Katya Stepanova, a rising senior in Carnegie Mellon University’s BFA program, makes her PICT debut in Three Sisters. Adrian Blake Enscoe, a 2012 graduate of the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, also lends his guitar artistry to the productions. Colette Freiwald, a Point Park University graduate with an extensive career in voiceover and commercial film work, returns to the stage for the Chekhov Celebration. Keith Foster, a student at Marietta College, makes his professional debut. Grace Ellen, a PICT intern and sophomore at NYU’s Tisch School of Drama, rounds out the repertory cast.

Chekhov Celebration scenic design is by Gianni Downs, lighting by Allen Hahn and sound design by Liz Atkinson. Costumes for Three Sisters and Ivanov by Pei-Chi Su; Funny Chekhov and After Chekhov by Rachel S. Parent. Properties by George DeShetler, Jr.

The makeover begins when her crooked boyfriend, Harry Brock, goes to Washington to buy himself a Senator and decides that Billie is too dumb to mingle with the political smart set. He hires a nerdy journalist to teach her how to fit in, and what transpires is the stuff of Broadway and Hollywood legend.

November 8 – December 9, 2012
The distance between Boston’s Chestnut Hill and the Lower End is measured in more than miles. Mike and Margaret both grew up poor, but he made it out and became a doctor while she is stuck – a single mother who gets by on sarcasm and bingo games with her pals. When they meet again, an invitation leads Margaret to his luxurious home and into a turbulent conversation with Mike and his surprising wife. This tough and tender play looks at luck, choices, blame, pride, and what people will do to survive.

January 3 – 12, 2013
Back for a special 10th anniversary celebration, this made-in-Pittsburgh play about Arthur J. Rooney, Sr. is the best-selling and most beloved production in Public Theater history. Starring Tom Atkins, The Chiefoffers stories about the founding of a legendary football dynasty, and a great American city.

1776. A Musical Play. Book by Peter Stone. Music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards
Directed by Ted Pappas
January 24 – February 24, 2013
The founding of our nation comes to star-spangled life in this grand Tony Award-winning Best Musical. In1776 you’ll see the heroes of the American Revolution like you’ve never seen them before – in rousing songs and dances, comic encounters, and impassioned politics. The stakes have never been higher as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin wrangle to get everyone on the same page – namely, the Declaration of Independence. Theatrical fireworks will fill the O’Reilly Theater in this thrilling story of how we went from 13 colonies, to the United States of America.

Thurgood. By George Stevens, Jr. Directed by Ted Pappas
March 7 – April 7, 2013
In 1967, Thurgood Marshall became our first African-American Supreme Court Justice. In this exuberant one-man play we’ll hear Thurgood’s story in his own words – from humble beginnings as a waiter in Baltimore, to behind the scenes with leaders such as General MacArthur, Robert Kennedy and President Lyndon Johnson, to his triumphant rise to the highest court in the land. A journey of epic proportions,Thurgood is an eye-opening, humorous, and uplifting portrait of a true American hero.

Clybourne Park. By Bruce Norris. Directed by Pamela Berlin
April 18 – May 19, 2013
With brilliant wit this winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 2012 Tony Award for Best Play inspects one house in two separate years: 1959 and 2009. In Act One, the mid-20th century problem centers on a black family moving into Chicago’s white Clybourne Park. In Act Two, it’s 50 years later and the issue is white gentrification in the now black neighborhood. Clybourne Park is a perceptive and sharply funny play about the minefield of personalities that must be negotiated before a community can be created.

Other Desert Cities. By Jon Robin Baitz. Directed by Rob Ruggiero
May 30 – June 30, 2013
Lyman Wyeth is an actor-politician in the Ronald Reagan mold. His impeccable wife Polly never has a strand of hair out of place. Now retired, their life in a wealthy Palm Springs enclave is upset when relatives arrive for the holidays. Son Trip is a TV reality show producer; Polly’s sister Silda is a wisecracking liberal just out of rehab; most troubling is daughter Brooke, who announces that she is about to publish a revealing memoir. This 2012 Tony-nominated Broadway sensation is an entertaining look at unruly family politics.

Registration and networking start at 1:00 PM.  The cost of the luncheon is $35.00.

Each year four awards are given. Three of them are for NAWBO MEMBERS only. They are:  Woman Business Owner of the Year, Member of the Year, and Rookie of the Year.

The fourth award is the Founder's Award.  This award is for a woman who most exemplifies the dedication, courage and advocacy of national past president, Gillian Rudd.  Due to her efforts, courage and tenacity, Congressional Act HR5050 was passed in 1989. This historic bill mandated the U.S. government to accumulate and release data on the number of women and minority owned businesses.  It also mandated the SBA to establish outreach, advocacy and training to encourage the growth of women business owners. For many of us it is difficult to remember a time when Women Business Owner's were not recognized or respected.  But some do.  And we know that without her efforts and the leadership of NAWBO, we would STILL NOT exist.  Without acknowledgement of our existence, we are not able to impact or have any significant power, influence, or ability to build our business and shape our economic destiny.

Please submit the names of the women who you believe are the most deserving of the awards given by the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of NAWBO.  Deadline for the nomination: August 8, 2012.

These outstanding women will be honored at our NAWBO Annual Banquet on Wednesday, August 18th below are the categories, description and nomination form.

Please submit your nomination by e-mail to: selfimagebz@aol.com

Deadline for submissions August 8, 2012

Honeck Conducts PSO Concerts in Canada, Philadelphia

For Immediate Release
July 17, 2012

MANFRED HONECK TO CONDUCT PSO IN CONCERTS IN CANADA, PHILADELPHIA

Cellist Johannes Moser joins PSO for concerts at Lanaudière Festival in Québec, Mann Center; PSO brings popular video game ‘Legend of Zelda’ to life at Mann Center

PITTSBURGH – Music Director Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) embark this week on a summer tour of Québec, Canada, and Philadelphia.

The orchestra will perform at the Lanaudière Festival in Québec on July 21 & 22, and at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia on July 24 & 25. Honeck will conduct both concerts at the Lanaudière Amphitheatre, and the first concert at the Mann Center.

German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser, often praised for his rich, gorgeous tone and playing that can range from lovely and elegant, to vigorous with head-banging, rock star energy, will be the guest soloist on July 21 in Québec, and July 24 in Philadelphia.

The second concert at the Mann Center will be a Pops concert, with the PSO performing the sensational, thematic and action-packed music of The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, based on one of the most popular video games in the world.

The tour begins at 8 p.m., Saturday, July 21, at the Lanaudière Amphitheatre, where the PSO will perform the overture to Mikhail Glinka’s Russlan and Ludmilla, Dvořák’s Concerto in B minor for Cello and Orchestra, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The next day, at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 22, the PSO’s concert will feature a suite from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, as well as several works by the Strauss Family.

In Philadelphia, Honeck will lead the PSO at 8 p.m., on Tuesday, July 24 in a concert featuring the works of Glinka, Dvořák and Tchaikovsky, performed three days earlier in Québec.

The following evening, at 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, the PSO takes a different direction under Irish conductor/composer Eímear Noone in The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses. Large game screens and video accompany the musicians during the performance. The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses is the first-ever video game themed concert to feature a four-movement symphony, showcasing the work of Nintendo composer and sound director Koji Kondo.

Tickets for the Mann Center concerts range from $12.50 to $49.50 for the July 24 performance, and $19.50 to $95 for the July 25 performance. They can be purchased by calling the Mann Center box office at 215.893.1999, or by visiting the Mann Center at www.themanncenter.org.

The PSO last performed at the Lanaudière Festival in July 2010, and at the Mann Center in July 2011. International touring is made possible by the Hillman Endowment for International Performances.

A native of Austria, Manfred Honeck was appointed its ninth music director and began his tenure at the start of the 2008/2009 season. He recently extended his contract through the 2019-2020 season. After performances at Carnegie Hall and a much-celebrated tour of European musical capitals in 2010, Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra returned to Europe again in August and September 2011 for appearances at major music festivals, such as the Rheingau Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Grafenegg Festival, Musikfest Berlin, Beethovenfest Bonn, Lucerne Festival, BBC Proms, and concerts in Paris and Vilnius, Lithuania. In October-November 2012, he will lead the PSO in another tour of Europe, including a four-concert residency at the prestigious Musikverein in Vienna. Honeck's successful work in Pittsburgh is captured on CD by the audiophile Japanese label Exton. So far, Mahler's Symphonies Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, and Richard Strauss's Ein Heldenleben have been released to critical acclaim.

Hailed by Gramophone magazine as “one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists,” Johannes Moser has performed with the world’s leading orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Symphony, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony and Israel Philharmonic. He works regularly with conductors of the highest level, including Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Jurowski, Franz Welser-Möst, Manfred Honeck, Christian Thielemann, Pierre Boulez and Paavo Jarvi. Moser has gained a reputation for his exquisite performances of lesser-known repertoire, much of it recorded on his extensive award-winning discography on Hänssler Classics. His affinity for new music has brought him much attention from leading conductors, such as Pierre Boulez, who invited him to make his U.S. debut with the Chicago Symphony on the Rands Concerto. Moser is an enthusiastic advocate for the electric cello, which he uses to explore new possibilities in sound as well as for improvisation.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Sets Stage for 2012-2013 Season
with Free “Ballet Under the Stars” Performance at Hartwood Acres

(Pittsburgh, PA) –  Gather your blankets and picnic chairs, and relax under the stars for Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s 24th annual open air  performance at the Hartwood Acres Middle Road Concert Area on Thursday, August 16, at 7:30 p.m. with pre-performance activities beginning at 5 p.m.

As part of the Allegheny Summer Concert Series, PBT will perform a free evening of mixed repertoire by August Bournonville, George Balanchine and Dwight Rhoden. Prior to the performance, PBT will host a variety of free, family activities and  a VIP picnic dinner under the PBT tent.

Sponsored by the County of Allegheny, PBT’s Hartwood Acres performance sets in motion the anticipation of a new ballet season, which this year premieres with Giselle with the PBT Orchestra, onstage Oct. 26-28, 2012 at the Benedum Center. During Ballet Under the Stars, audience members will have access to an exclusive pre-sale for single tickets to 2012-2013 Season productions before individual tickets officially go on sale Sept. 4.

Free Performance — 7:30 p.m.

For the first time, PBT will bring the Mediterranean color of Napoli Variations to the stage with choreography from Act III of August Bournonville’s classic romantic ballet set to music by E. Helsted, Gade and Paulli.

In Sylvia Pas de Deux, George Balanchine keeps the tradition of a grand pas de deux in the French style, with an adagio, variations and a coda. Set to a sumptuous composition by Léo Delibes, this is the ideal vehicle for virtuoso performances.

The company also will perform the cutting-edge Chromatic, a 2012 Pittsburgh world premiere created on PBT dancers by choreographer Dwight Rhoden. Set to music by Johann S. Bach, Rhoden melds the classical ornamentation of the Baroque era with contemporary and athletic movement in an abstract piece that mirrors the constant motion of modern life.

Free Pre-Performance Family Activities — 5 p.m.
PBT invites audience members to arrive at 5 p.m. for  free family activities, including a ballerina dress up station, character greetings and photo opportunities, themed crafts by PBT and the Boyd Community Center and dance activities with PBT School instructors.

Annual VIP Picnic — 5 p.m.
PBT will host a savory summer barbecue under the PBT Tent sponsored by Yelp and Clique Vodka in celebration of the upcoming 2012-2013 Season.  While mingling with PBT’s company dancers, guests will enjoy live music and cocktails before heading to reserved stage-front performance seating. Tickets are available for $75 for adults and $20 for children. For more information, or to purchase tickets, contact Shayne Souleret at 412-454-9137.

Presented by Giordano Dance Chicago and Point Park University, Jazz Dance World Festival features four electrifying evenings of dance August 1 – 4 at the Byham Theater.
