MARKS THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EVENT

Introducing CrawlAfterDark at participating venues beginning at 9 p.m.

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the line-up for its winter Gallery Crawl that takes place Friday, January 24, 2014, from 5:30–9 p.m. The crawl showcases a wide variety of thought provoking art exhibitions in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Live bands, DJs, dance, comedy, and participatory activities are also part of the complimentary crawl events.
 

2014 marks the 10th anniversary of Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District. To mark this special occasion, the Trust is introducing CrawlAfterDark, which features select venues with additional events beginning at 9 p.m. Each of the CrawlAfterDark activities requires admission, ranging from $5–$15.

“We are pleased to introduce CrawlAfterDark, extending hours for certain Cultural District venues participating in the Gallery Crawl and promoting the District as a late-night destination,” says Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President of Education and Community Engagement and Director of Jazz Programs for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. “CrawlAfterDark highlights the transformation of the Cultural District, promoting numerous options for late night entertainment, from comedy, music, theatre, clubs, dining, and more.”

Polyglot Theatre creates an imagined world filled with tall, strange cardboard trees, paper leaves, boulders, ponds, and other mysterious forms that transform the space. Although German Dada artist Hannah Höch was active half a world away as the Radium Girls were painting watch dials, Höch was creating rebellious collages that pointed out the stark difference between reality and the media’s projected images of women. To celebrate her work, visitors are invited to “Make Your Own Radium Girl” using Hannah Höch’s collage method and materials provided.

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces its fall gallery crawl takes place Friday, September 27, from 5:30–10 p.m. The crawl showcases a wide variety of thought-provoking art exhibitions in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Live bands, DJs, dance, comedy, and participatory activities are also part of the complimentary crawl events.

This month’s crawl features the opening night of the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts (PIFOF)*, a project of Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. To mark this occasion, The Rubber Duck, the US debut of artist Florentijn Hofman’s four-story-high rubber duck, launches into the Allegheny River. After being lifted into the river at a marina near the West End Bridge, the duck will be sent on a short voyage, coming to rest by the 6th Street Bridge. The bridge will be closed to traffic to host The Rubber Duck Bridge Party featuring Night Market VI, an outdoor market that brings together some of Pittsburgh’s most creative independent art and food vendors, presented by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership.

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Wood Street Galleries, SPACE, and 943 Gallery are also partaking in launch of the PIFOF with US premiere exhibition openings. Wood Street Galleries presents Chicago-based, Austrian artist Kurt Hentschläger’s Hive (2011), a 3D-animated audiovisual installation where gallery visitors confront a swirling mass of amorphous figures, appearing as a collective matter as opposed to individual beings in deep space. SPACE presents Austrian audiovisual media artistic duo Kurt Hentschläger and Ulf Langheinrich’s large-scale installations that fuse sights and sound into one medium, Model 5 (1994) and POL (1998). 943 Gallery presents Kurt Hentschläger’s ZEE (2008), a stroboscopic audiovisual journey that pushes the boundaries of human perception.

September’s Gallery Crawl is part of RADical Days, an annual event celebrating the Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD) assets with free admission, performances, and activities offered by arts and culture organizations, libraries, and sports facilities, that are funded by RAD. RADical Days run September 21–November 10, 2013.

An unprecedented visual, acoustic and physical experience, Model 5 projects multiple portraits of Japanese artist Akemi Takeya. At once serene and kinetically beautiful, heightened mechanical rhythms manipulate the image to create a sense of schizophrenia, with the body being pulled apart and dissolving in electronic space.

POL
The German word for “pole,” POL is a live, improvised panoramic performance that relies on high intensity light, video and audio projection, subjecting audiences to an astounding flow of stimuli to create a perceptional situation of disorientation and recollection.

Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is excited to announce an innovative new exhibit opening at SPACE.  Crowdsourced is curated by Robert Raczka and features participating artists Kim Beck, Casey Droege, Corey Escoto, Gabe Felice, Lori Hepner, Renee Ickes, William Kofmehl III, Maritza Mosquera, Tom Sarver, Shaun Slifer, Barbara Weissberger, and Paul Zelevansky.  Each artist will create a large drawing directly on the walls of the gallery and the art making process will be open to the public for both observation and input into the artistic process.  On Friday, July 12, the gallery will open early, beginning at 1:00 p.m., until 9:00 p.m. The exhibit runs from July 12 through September 1, 2013.

Robert Raczka (guest curator-Crowdsourced) is an artist, art critic for Pittsburgh City Paper and other publications, emeritus professor of art at Allegheny College, and visiting assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University this fall. He has curated exhibits for a number of institutions including the University of Akron, Artists Image Resource, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Forum Gallery at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia, and for SPACE gallery.   Raczka’s artwork uses photography, collage, and exhibitions incorporating found objects to engage with popular culture and taste, the public communication of advertising and marketing, and the often-tenuous connection between representation and reality. “Audiences are responding to more active forms of engagement with art, and Crowdscourced gives artists a push in that direction with many of the artists moving beyond their usual way of working,” comments Raczka.

Kim Beck uses images of architecture and landscape to make drawings, prints, paintings and installations that survey peripheral and suburban spaces. Her work urges a reconsideration of the built environment - the peculiar street signs, gas station banners, overgrown weeded lots, and self-storage buildings — bringing the banal and everyday into focus.

Casey Droege was raised by two artists and a mime. Their incessant side hustles, ranging from chimney sweep to insurance sales, created the time management monster/slightly organized tornado that is Casey. And while her mother made it clear to her that she should go into computers, she now lives and works as an artist using language to objectify the subjective.

Corey Escoto has exhibited nationally, internationally and in his home state, Texas. He was one of the three artists selected to participate in the Great Rivers Biennial (2008) at the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis and is a recipient of the Gateway Foundation Grant.

Gabe Felice is a local post-visionary artist. An example of his creative work- a 2010 residency at the Brew House, Gabe developed an interactive psychic art experiment called the Magical Psychic T - Shirt.  The experiment invites viewers to become a part of his creative process through Extrasensory Perception and Clairsentience. While holding a small sculpture from the fantastical "Device Unit", the participants' subtle energies are transmitted into the sculpture. Accessing the transmission via psychometry, the energies are translated into a psychic drawing for the participant to interpret.

Lori Hepner is a visual artist with an ongoing interest in exploring how digital technology is impacting society and individuals. Her most recent body of work, Status Symbols, is a series of portraits that are studies of identity in the digital age of social media using time, code, and light to photographically create glowing orbs of abstract color. Her work has recently been exhibited internationally and was featured in the Pittsburgh edition of UK-based Next Level Magazine in November 2012.

Renee Ickes is a native of Pittsburgh.  She studied art at Columbus College of Art and Design, Indiana University of Pennsylvania,  Academy of  Fine Arts, Zagreb, Croatia, Pratt Institute and the National Academy School of Fine Arts, NYC. Her work can be seen on the blog www.givemeyourrubberheart.tumblr.com.

William Kofmehl, III is a native of Pittsburgh and sculptor.  Kofmehl’s degrees include Bachelor of Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University and Master of Fine Arts Degree from Yale University; adjunct professorial appointments: Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art, France, Carnegie Mellon, University and Robert Morris University.  Kofmehl’s works have been exhibited in the U.S. and abroad. His complex installations built of wood, steel, bronze and hand-embroidery act as a staging ground for multiple performers where, routinely, Kofmehl himself lives and dwells within the installation for the entire length of the exhibit.  Kofmehl’s recent activity: Hong Kong: exhibit at the International Art Fair and speaker for ArtAsiaPacific -Guerilla Talks.

Maritza Mosquera  has been an artist all her life and an educator for over thirty years; teaching in prison, community organizations, universities and museums.

Tom Sarver is a locally based artist and creator of The Mattress Factory Museum of Art.  He is known for working in performance art, site-specific installation and public art projects dealing with environmental, social and political issues using the participation and involvement of the community.

Shaun Slifer works in video, print, static and kinetic sculpture, street signage of dubious legality, and as a self-taught history writer/researcher. He is currently working on projects which explore obscured and forgotten histories - those of humans and of other animals - through memorial practices.

Barbara Weissberger’s kaleidoscopic wall collages, Rorschach-like prints, and surreal mixed media collaged landscapes are exhibited widely. Her work has explored consumption (consumer and food), meat as metaphor, and notions of beauty and disgust. Play is central to her process; images grow out of improvisation and the pleasure of working with materials.

Paul Zelevansky currently resides in Pittsburgh.  He holds a BFA in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University, Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from Columbia Teacher’s College and PhD, Art Education from Columbia Teacher’s College. His work includes early digital interactive museum exhibitions (NY Hall of Science 1988-92), digital animation, artists books, theoretical writing, curating, and graphic design. Published articles include use of text and image, web art, popular culture, and educational and aesthetic theory; most recent publication, 24 Ideas About Pictures.

SUMMER GALLERY CRAWL ANNOUNCED FOR
THE CULTURAL DISTRICT WITH EXTENDED HOURS

PITTSBURGH, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announced the date and time for its July Gallery Crawl today.  On Friday, July 12, 2013, from 5:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., the crawl will showcase a wide variety of thought provoking art exhibitions in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.  Live bands, DJs, dance, comedy, and participatory activities are also part of the complimentary happenings during the crawl.

 “Visitors can enjoy spending their summer evening in the Cultural District with over 30 event stops during the Gallery Crawl. Catch a free ride around the District on a Green Gears Pedicab!  A few highlights include new exhibit openings at Wood Street Galleries, SPACE, 707 and 709 Penn Galleries.  Music is a big part of the evening as well,” comments Darcy Kucenic, Director of Highmark First Night Pittsburgh & Manager of Education and Operations with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

Performing at Katz Plaza, The Amigos Band, hailing from New York City, blends unique harmonies from bluegrass to jazz to create their collaborative American music.  In 2013, the Amigos were chosen to serve as American Cultural Ambassadors for the American Music Abroad program by the U.S. Department of State.  Touring the U.S. for the first time, Muzička will perform traditional Czech folk music, outdoors at 8th Street and Penn Avenue.  Flo Wilson and the Old School Band will have gallery crawl patrons dancing at the August Wilson Center.

After the Crawl, participants can attend one of these two ticketed events being produced by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust on that same evening, Cosmopolitan Pittsburgh at the Byham and Ryoji Ikeda’s test pattern-live set at the Trust Arts Education Center.

In The Painting as Object, Florentine-born artist Fabrizio Gerbino explores the nature of paintings as objects in themselves, by presenting a series of meta-paintings that use earlier works almost like objects in a still life, or as the launching point for abstractions.  Gerbino translates these subjects into minimalist shapes using colors mixed only from primaries.

“Witnessing Gerbino’s paintings evolve has been amazing,” says Sonja Sweterlitsch, Curator of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s 709 Penn Gallery.  “When he first moved to Pittsburgh, Gerbino impressed with his mastery of technical skills, with work ranging from realistic cityscapes to meticulously rendered miniature copies of masterworks from his native Italy.  In recent years, his work has ranged from installation art to video, and his painting has become more minimalist in style.  While his work continues to draw inspiration from urban spaces, industrial buildings, and abandoned industrial objects, this new series is very much about the nature of painting,” says Sweterlitsch.

In The Painting as Object, the works on display have been painted and repainted many times, the evolution of each work revealed through the still visible layers of paint.  “I covered each one,” says Gerbino. “I was not satisfied with them.  I covered these paintings without specific expectations, and I was open for a new transformation.

I put them down on the floor to dry and after days, I started to look at them not any more just as a painting experience, but as objects. Then I put them on the wall, the same way they had been on the floor.  I decided to use that work like an object, a subject for a new painting.”

Also on display is a very personal painting of Gerbino’s father’s hand, painted directly from a video of his father that was filmed days before his death.  On the canvas, paint drips from his father’s fingers.  Leaving the drip was a purposeful decision, a poetic expression using the paint itself.

ABOUT FABRIZIO GERBINO

Fabrizio Gerbino is an Italian artist who was born in Tripoli, Libya in 1962. He graduated from the Istituto Statale D’Arte and attended the Scuola Libera del Nudo at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy. In October of 2003 he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he currently lives and works. He exhibited his work extensively in Florence and other Italian cities as well as in Germany. For many years in Italy his work focused on painting, installations and iron sculpture.
Gerbino has found inspiration from urban spaces, industrial buildings and abandoned industrial objects. Gerbino’s works are held in the following collections:

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the upcoming Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District is taking place on Friday September 28, 2012, from 5:30 – 9:00 p.m., downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District. The Gallery Crawl is an urban showcase featuring a wide variety of thought provoking art exhibitions, live bands, DJs, dance, theater, and more. Everything from the traditional to the avant garde is on display for art lovers of all ages. Gallery Crawl events are free and open to the public.
