Sounds of Science

For Immediate Release
July 23, 2014

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra partners with CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER FOR 21+ Night To EXPLORE ‘THE SOUNDS OF SCIENCE’

PITTSBURGH, July 23, 2014 – The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is teaming up with the Carnegie Science Center for a special adults-only evening, featuring symphonic sounds with a scientific twist. “The Sounds of Science” is the theme of the Science Center’s next 21+ Night on Friday, Aug. 1, from 6 – 10 pm.
Throughout the evening, musicians will demonstrate their instruments, including a double bass and a bassoon. They’ll even hook up instruments to the Science Center’s Rubens’ Tube, which visually demonstrates an instrument’s sound waves and pressure by shooting flames into the air.

Visitors can dance on a giant floor piano and play a tune with Boomwhackers, hollow percussion tubes. Stations throughout the building will offer the materials for DIY musical instruments, including a one-note harmonica. Guests can test their musical knowledge at a live action Trivial Pursuit game, complete with a prize giveaway. Visitors can pose with a Mozart-cut out – and enter to win a Mozart prize pack. Fiddlesticks, the orchestra’s “fiddlin’ feline” ambassador, will make a special appearance.

As always, 21+ Night features music, cash bars, and the chance to experience four floors of hands-on exhibits – with no kids!

Participants get a discount on Omnimax films and laser shows that evening. The cost of the event is just $10 with advance registration before noon on the day of the event or $15 after noon at the door. Guests will receive a voucher for $15 in free slot play at the Rivers Casino when they arrive, while supplies last.
21+ Nights are sponsored by Trib Total Media, and Bob and Q92 Radio.

For more information or to register, visit CarnegieScienceCenter.org or call 412.237.3400.

The Pittsburgh Symphony, known for its artistic excellence, is credited with a rich history of the world’s finest conductors and musicians, and a strong commitment to the Pittsburgh region and its citizens. This tradition was furthered in fall 2008, when Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck became music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. With a long and distinguished history of touring both domestically and overseas since 1900, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra continues to be critically acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest orchestras. The Pittsburgh Symphony has made 40 international tours, including 20 European tours, eight trips to the Far East, and two to South America. The PSO has a long and illustrious history in the areas of recordings and radio concerts. As early as 1936, the PSO broadcast coast-to-coast, receiving increased national attention in 1982 through network radio broadcasts on Public Radio International (PRI). The Pittsburgh Symphony would like to recognize and thank PNC for its 2014-2015 title sponsorship of PNC Pops. Fairmont Pittsburgh is the official hotel of the Pittsburgh Symphony.

With a career spanning five decades, George Takei is known around the world for his founding role in the acclaimed television series “Star Trek,” in which he played Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the Starship Enterprise. Takei starred in three seasons of Star Trek and later reprised his iconic role in six movies. “To Be Takei,” a Jennifer M. Kroot documentary on the life and career of Takei, premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2014 and will have a theatrical release on Aug. 22, 2014. “Takei’s Take,” produced by AARP, is a new YouTube series where Takei explores the world of technology, trends, current events and pop culture. There Goes the Internet,” released in e-book and paperback in 2012, and it ranked #10 on the New York Times E-book nonfiction list. Takei and Tony Award winner Lea Salonga are developing "Allegiance – A New American Musical.” The musical is an epic story of love, family and heroism during the Japanese American internment. Allegiance's world premiere at the Old Globe theatre in San Diego in 2012 will be followed by a Broadway run. In addition to a busy acting career, Takei regularly appears on Howard Stern's Sirius XM satellite radio show. Takei has brought his voiceover talent to hundreds of characters in film, television, video games and commercials during his prolific career. Takei, a Japanese American who from age 4 to 8 was unjustly interned in two U.S. internment camps during World War II, is an outspoken supporter of human right issues and community activist. He is chairman emeritus and a trustee of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. The openly gay Takei has served as the spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign "Coming Out Project," and was cultural affairs chairman of the Japanese American Citizens League.  He was appointed to the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission by former President Clinton and the government of Japan awarded Takei the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, for his contribution to U.S.-Japanese relations. PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST ANNOUNCES
MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE NO LIMITS ARTIST
ALEXANDRE ARRECHEA
ARTIST TALK, FILM SCREENING, AND PUBLIC ART TOUR
August 25, 6 p.m. | Talk & Screening | Peirce Studio | 805 Liberty Avenue
August 26, Noon | Public Art Walking Tour | Penn Avenue & 10th Street

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces Cuban-born artist and sculptor Alexandre Arrechea will be in Pittsburgh August 25 & 26, 2014, discussing his public artwork on view throughout downtown Pittsburgh through September 5, 2014. Three monumental sculptures that are part of Arrechea’s series No Limits were installed during the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival in Gateway Center and at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, with generous support from The Fine Foundation. The events are hosted in partnership with the Pittsburgh Office of Public Art. Reservations can be made online at publicartpittsburgh.org or by calling 412-391-2060, ext. 237.

Courthouse 2013 (Joshua Franzos)

A free artist talk and documentary screening of No Limits will be held in the Peirce Studio, Trust Arts Education Center, 805/807 Liberty Avenue, Monday, August 25, at 6 p.m. The evening features Arrechea—winner of the Fund for Park Avenue Award in 2013—discussing his sculptural work No Limits. There will also be a screening of the artist’s documentary No Limits (USA, 2013/26 min.), which examines the relationship between architecture and power, covering the entire process of fabrication and installation of these monumental sculptures. No Limits was directed and written by Juan Carlos Alom, Armando Suárez Cobián, and Ismael de Diego.

Metropolitan Life Insurance 2013 (Annie O'Neill)

On Tuesday, August 26, at noon, Arrechea will lead a free public art walking tour of his works. Participants should meet at Penn Avenue and 10th Street, in front of the Seagram sculpture, near the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The walking tour will visit each of the artist’s three installations in addition to public artworks along the walking route, including Tony Tasset’s Magnolias for Pittsburgh and Romare Bearden’s Pittsburgh Recollections. The tour will last approximately one hour.

Arrechea’s No Limits is series of ten large-scale sculptures representing iconic New York City buildings that plays on the idea of elastic architecture as a metaphor for the challenges and opportunities of shifting conditions and new realities. Through his art, Arrechea entices the viewer to explore his or her own role in such concepts as control, power, and surveillance.

The buildings portrayed in No Limits are twisted, turned, and rotated, and are fused to spinning tops, or tompos (toy tops popular in Latin America), resulting in the idea of a building in perpetual motion—a building that can continuously spin, fall, or rise again.

Seagrams 2013 (Renee Rosensteel)
“With this installation, I have created a set of works that confront dynamism vs. static, the whole vs. the fragmented, control vs. chaos, utopia vs. reality,” says artist Alexandre Arrechea. “The series provides a new point of access from which to understand the dialog between art and architecture and how this relationship can evolve and open new doors.”

Sculpture Locations: Metropolitan Life Insurance, Four Gateway Center, near Liberty Ave. & Stanwix St.; Courthouse, Four Gateway Center, in upper level plaza; Seagram, David L. Lawrence Convention Center, near Penn Ave. & 10th St.

Alexandre Arrechea (born Trinidad, Cuba, 1970) graduated from Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, Cuba, in 1994. He was a founding member of the collective Los Carpinteros (1991–2003). As a solo artist, Arrechea represented his homeland in the first ever Cuban Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2011), as well as the 11th Havana Biennial (2012). Arrechea was the spring 2011 BAMbill cover artist as well as featured in “Hola Havana” for the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of ¡Si Cuba! Festival (2011). A key source for this work is the prominence of surveillance systems and the accompanying obsession with control during our time. Works such as the Garden of Mistrust(2003–2005) and Perpetual Free Entrance (2006) deal with troubles of accessibility or approach to artwork. An installation he created for the 2009 Havana Biennial consisted of a steel house divided into eleven sections, the separation between walls changing daily, depending of the rise or fall of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. In March 2010, Arrechea was chosen to create a public art program in New York City’s Times Square. The video work Black Sun (2009) was a 3-D animated wrecking ball that continuously hit the NASDAQ Billboard. Arrechea’s work is ultimately a provocative exercise of criticisms to the known structures of power in our time.

Former PSO Music Director Maazel Dies

For Immediate Release
July 14, 2014

STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF FORMER PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MUSIC DIRECTOR LORIN MAAZEL

PITTSBURGH— The entire Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra organization was saddened to learn of the passing Maestro Lorin Maazel, who served as the orchestra’s music director from 1984 to 1996. Maazel, age 84, died on July 13, 2014 in Virginia from complications following pneumonia.

Maazel was a world-renowned conductor, as well as a composer, mentor, father and husband, who devoted more than 75 years of his life to music-making. He took the baton of the Pittsburgh Symphony during a critical time in its history, following the departure of Andre Previn. The symphony developed an unrivaled international following under his leadership, gathering future stature as he led tours of Europe, Asia and the Americas, added first-rank players to vital positions and programmed season-long retrospectives that appealed to audiences and critics alike.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Maestro Lorin Maazel. There can be no doubt that he had a significant impact on the musical life of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the music world as a whole. I, myself, played many times under his baton and was struck by his prodigious talent and quest for perfection,” said Manfred Honeck, current music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. “He left behind a core of musical leaders that still define the Pittsburgh Symphony today and an incredible standard of playing. As one of his successors, I am deeply indebted to him for creating the ideal culture of musicians and the music-making exemplified in this orchestra. All of us at the Pittsburgh Symphony and our audiences, both here and around the world, continue to benefit from the work he did in Pittsburgh. I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family and his many friends and fans. We have truly lost one of the world’s greatest conductors.”

Born in Paris in 1930, Maazel began violin lessons at age five, and conducting lessons at age seven. He and his family moved to Pittsburgh so that he could study conducting with Vladimir Bakaleinikoff, who had become associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1939. Between ages nine and 15, he conducted most of the major American orchestras, including the NBC Symphony at the invitation of Arturo Toscanini. In the course of his decades-long career, Maazel conducted more than 150 orchestras in no fewer than 5,000 opera and concert performances. He made more than 300 recordings, including symphonic cycles of complete orchestral works by Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Mahler, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Richard Strauss, winning 10 Grands Prix du Disques.

During his career, Maazel served as artistic director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and general manager of the Vienna State Opera, as music director of the Radio Symphony of Berlin, the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic, with whom he made an unprecedented visit to North Korea in 2008. He also was a highly regarded composer, with a wide-ranging catalog of works written primarily over the last 15 years.
“The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra joins the international music community in mourning the passing of a Pittsburgh native who began his music career as a child prodigy and grew to become the most prolific conductor of perhaps all time. He conducted some 150 orchestras during his lifetime and we, in Pittsburgh, benefited from and deeply respected his time with us as music director. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Maazel family,” said James Wilkinson, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Point Park University-produced documentary series ‘The Chair’ will begin Sept. 6 on Starz

The 10-episode series will air at 10 p.m., Saturdays; follows competing film directors making 2 movies, ‘Not Cool’ and ‘Hollidaysburg’

PITTSBURGH – The Point Park University-produced documentary series, “The Chair,” will begin airing on Saturday, Sept. 6, on STARZ as the channel’s first original unscripted series.

The 10-episode series will air at 10 p.m., on Saturdays.

Created by veteran Hollywood producer Chris Moore, “The Chair” is a STARZ original filmmaking experiment that follows two first-time directors, Shane Dawson and Anna Martemucci, as they compete to make two separate feature films from the same script, “How Soon Is Now?”

“The Chair” will document the creation, marketing and theatrical release of both films - “Hollidaysburg” directed by Martemucci, who grew up in State College and attended Penn State, and “Not Cool,” directed by Dawson. Through multiplatform voting, viewers will ultimately determine which director will be awarded $250,000. Both films will also air on STARZ.

More than 100 Point Park students and alumni from a variety of majors supported the TV series and two feature films as interns, employees, and through class projects. Additionally, production offices were located on Point Park University’s campus in downtown Pittsburgh.

“Point Park University is proud to be a partner on ‘The Chair,’ and we are excited for Starz viewers to see a finished product that employed a number of University students and alumni,” said Paul Hennigan, president of Point Park. “This project acts as an economic driver and incubator for original entertainment that boosts the local economy while giving our students the kind of experience they need to thrive in the real world.”

The University plans to hold weekly screening parties of “The Chair” on campus.

“We are excited that the start of the show coincides with the start of our new academic year,” said Nelson Chipman, associate professor of cinema arts at Point Park University.  “It will be thrilling to not only see Point Park and the City of Pittsburgh profiled on the national stage, but also a great way to highlight all the work current students and alums have done on the project and to share it with the University community at large."

“The Chair” is also produced by Pittsburgh native and renowned actor, Zachary Quinto, and his production company, Before The Door Pictures.

Written by Dan Schoffer, the film is a coming-of-age comedy about a group of former high school classmates who return home from college for Thanksgiving.

The directors will have creative leeway to develop their respective films using their own ingenuity and distinct experience. While they are both first-time feature film directors, Dawson is an Internet superstar whose YouTube comedy channels boast more than 10 million subscribers and more than a billion views. Martemucci is a writer, actor and filmmaker who most recently received critical recognition for her independent film "Breakup at a Wedding," which she co-wrote, produced and starred in.

Moore has served as producer or executive producer on such films as “Good Will Hunting,” “Glory Daze,” “Best Laid Plans,” “Joy Ride,” “American Pie,” “Waiting” and “Reindeer Games.”  He formed LivePlanet alongside Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Sean Bailey, and was the creator of “Project Greenlight.” Since 2005, Moore has directed or produced “American Reunion,” “The Adjustment Bureau,” “The People Speak,” “The Last Resort,” and “Promised Land,” which also was filmed in Pittsburgh. He’s currently the co-founder and managing director of The Media Farm.

Quinto graduated from Central Catholic High School and Carnegie Mellon University.  His television roles include Adam Kaufman on the Fox series “24” and Sylar on the science fiction series, “Heroes.”  He also played Spock in the remake of “Star Trek” (2009) and “Star Trek into the Darkness” (2013).  He recently starred on Broadway as Tom in Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie.” His production company, Before the Door Pictures, produced the Academy Award-nominated film, “Margin Call,” in which Quinto also starred, and last year’s critically acclaimed film, “All is Lost,” starring Robert Redford.

About Point Park University – Founded in 1960, Point Park University is a comprehensive master’s-level university with a strong liberal arts tradition.  Located in Downtown Pittsburgh, Point Park enrolls 3,841 full- and part-time students in 82 undergraduate programs and 17 graduate programs offered through its School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Communication and the Conservatory of Performing Arts.

HISTORY OF THE SHOW
CATS first premiered in 1980 as a collection of songs, with lyrics based off of T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and music arranged by Andrew Lloyd Webber. When Webber debuted the songs at the Sydmonton Festival in London, Eliot’s widow Valerie Fletcher approached the composer with a collection of her late husband’s unpublished work. It was then that the idea to transform the series of songs into a full-scale musical was born.

Later that same year, Webber collaborated with director Trevor Nunn to create a story from the famous book for poems that would translate to the stage. Three of the unpublished poems that were given to Webber by Fletcher were incorporated into the show in their entirety, including “Grizabella the Glamour Cat.”

Since its debut on the West End in 1981, CATS has become an international phenomenon and holds the current record as the second-longest running Broadway musical of all time, surpassed only by Webber’s own The Phantom of the Opera. The show has been translated into 10 different languages and performed in 26 countries. It has won numerous awards, including the 1981 Laurence Olivier award for Musical of the Year, the Evening Standard award for Best Musical, and seven 1983 Tony® awards, including Best Musical.

Kelly Collier stitches together stylish back brace business weaving biomedical engineering and athletic background
Western Penna. SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year lauded on Aug. 4

PITTSBURGH – Her clients might not walk the red carpet donning her creations, but Kelly Collier, 25, founder and CEO of ActivAided Orthotics has a loyal following of more than 500 customers, including Harrison Ruopp, a defenseman with the Pittsburgh Penguin organization.

Collier’s efforts enabled her to collect honors as the U. S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Western Pennsylvania Young Entrepreneur of the Year for a design that revamped the traditional rigid back brace into a functional, flexible shirt.

“It [this award] is pretty amazing,” Collier said.  “It’s a big testament to the many mentors and advisors who have helped me develop my products.”

An avid swimmer, Collier’s back pain problems became the catalyst for the project which was developed by a physician Dr. Gary Chimes, Collier and her peers as a senior project at Carnegie Mellon University.  Unlike her classmates, Collier gave herself additional homework when she incorporated the assignment into a post-graduate business.

The West Mifflin area entrepreneur, who always did well in school, found she was on pins and needles when developing the product prototype.  “The only B’s I ever received were in home economics, so it took me about 15 hours to personally stitch each of the first five prototypes using my mom’s sewing machine,” she stated.

Her prototype enabled Collier to utilize Pittsburgh’s AlphaLab accelerators, funded in part through SBA grants, to grow her business.  SBA funding helps ensure that local manufacturers are equipped to handle the supply-chain needs of new companies housed at the AlphaLab accelerators.

“Kelly is the type of entrepreneur we love to see come into AlphaLab and grow after completing our training program,” said Jim Jen, director.  “Kelly’s business has gone from a rough prototype, which was a college project, into a dynamic, growing company with medical distributors all over the country.”

Collier said the posture-corrective shirt enables the body to naturally align the spine leading to better posture resulting in less pain, a better appearance, confidence and breathing.

Ruopp, who at the start of the hockey season experienced a lot of back pain, was told by a physician he would need a back brace. Ruopp said his first reaction was “Whoa!”  -- until he saw the shirt.

“It’s stylish, not restrictive and I could put it on and go out,” he said. “I have poor posture from playing hockey and working on our grain farm back home, but, wearing the shirt for a few hours a day personally helped me.”

"The shirt and its correction straps, stabilization belt and posture panel is comprehensive and targets the lower back and shoulders, it focuses on total alignment of the spine,” Collier explained. “It’s an undershirt but it rehabilitates the back – it’s not restrictive or immobilizing, but more of a performance sportswear shirt worn a few hours a day.”

Ruopp said the straps on the shoulders helped straighten his torso upright.

Collier added running a business is more difficult for her than obtaining degrees in biomedical engineering and materials science.  “This is real-world responsibilities and the stakes are higher,” Collier exclaimed. “But when patients, like Ruopp, love and appreciate the product, it makes the hard work worth it.”

According to White, Collier is an entrepreneur who saw herself as the solution to a problem. “Her back problems led her to turn this project into a business that helps correct posture in a non-restrictive form,” White said. “It’s incredible that a simple shirt will be able to help so many athletes plagued by back pain.”

Once she receives her award, Collier, will be doing more than just thanking her peers and mentors – she’s inviting them to a free physical medicine symposium hosted by her.

“I will be speaking about treatment through innovation and will preview prototypes of our newest products: a device that stabilizes and balances hip muscles along with a sock that designed to rehabilitate Achilles Tendinopathy,” Collier explained.  “James Lomuscio of Hability is discussing provider-patient relationships, while Bob Wanovich from Highmark is addressing reimbursement which pays for value and efficient patient care.”

WHAT:   Clinicians, community leaders and media representatives are invited to the Riverside Center for Innovation, where Ms. Kelly Collier, founder and CEO of ActivAided Orthotics, not only will receive her SBA award but also host a medical symposium. IN PITTSBURGH’S DOWNTOWN CULTURAL DISTRICT

PITTSBURGH, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announced today that Simple Ingredients, a moderately priced take-out restaurant, will offer fresh salads and wraps made daily as well as homemade soups available this fall.  Simple Ingredients will open July 2014 in a storefront on Liberty Avenue, between the Harris Theater and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Education Center at 807 Liberty Avenue, in a property owned by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

The owner of the Simple Ingredients, Michael Tarquinio, also owns Sal’s City Deli, which was founded in 2012 and opened in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District with great success.  The Pittsburgh City Paper called Sal’s City Deli the “perfect getaway for lunch” outside of New York.  Simple Ingredients will be a sister location to Sal’s City Deli and will also include higher end fresh and organic ingredients within its menu options.

Pittsburgh, PA • July 15, 2014 – Pittsburgh CLO is pleased to announce the Pittsburgh Premiere of the Off-Broadway sensation Murder For Two, October 22-January 18 at the CLO Cabaret.  Everyone is a suspect in this exciting production where classic musical comedy meets Agatha Christie.  In this witty and winking musical homage to old-fashioned murder mysteries, TWO performers play THIRTEEN ROLES — not to mention the piano.  Murder For Two is the perfect blend of music, mayhem and murder!

More about the Mystery…

Officer Marcus Moscowicz is a small town policeman with dreams of making it to detective. One fateful night, shots ring out at the surprise birthday party of Great American Novelist Arthur Whitney and the writer is killed…fatally. With the nearest detective an hour away, Marcus jumps at the chance to prove his sleuthing skills—with the help of his silent partner, Lou.  But whodunit?  Did Dahlia Whitney, Arthur’s scene-stealing wife, give him a big finish?  Is Barrette Lewis, the prima ballerina, the prime suspect?  Did Dr. Griff, the overly-friendly psychiatrist, make a frenemy?   Marcus has only a short amount of time to find the killer and make his name before the real detective arrives…and the ice cream melts!

“INGENIOUS! A SNAZZY double-act!” by The New York Times and a “HILARIOUS musical whodunit” by the New York Observer.  It is a “A MUST-SEE 90-minute jolt of CAFFEINATED CREATIVITY,” according to NY 1-TV.

Murder For Two was developed at Adirondack Theatre Festival and 42nd Street Moon. Chicago Shakespeare Theater presented the World Premiere Production in May, 2011, which was extended four times and ran for more than six months. Murder For Two opened at Second Stage Theatre’s uptown home, the McGinn/Cazale Theatre, in July, 2013. It was extended twice due to popular demand. The Second Stage production transferred to New World Stages in 2013.

About the Creative Team
Murder For Two is the creation of the talented writing team of Joe Kinosian (music and book) and Kellen Blair (lyrics and book), who first met in the BMI Musical Theatre Writing Workshop, where they're currently Advanced Members. Kinosian and Blair’s song "If He Knew Me" recently had its Broadway debut at the 2013 Theatre World Awards. They're proud members of ASCAP and recipients of the 2013 ASCAP Foundation Mary Rodgers / Lorenz Hart Award. They also took part in the 2010 Johnny Mercer Songwriting Project, where their song, "You're Mine Until," was selected to be part of a gala concert honoring Stephen Schwartz. They received a 2011 Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Musical for Murder For Two. Currently, Kinosian and Blair are in development on several new musicals, including The More Things Change, a backstage musical comedy about two middle-aged actors battling to set the record straight about their shaky romantic past.
