Award-winning comedian and actress Lily Tomlin presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street

Lily Tomlin will be performing at the Byham Theater presenting an evening of her most beloved characters and more current comic material on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. This performance is presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, as a part of the Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series.

One of America’s most beloved comic actresses, Lily Tomlin rose to prominence as a member of 1969’s Laugh-In, where she introduced such characters as Ernestine, the irascible telephone operator, and Edith Ann, the devilish six year old. After Laugh-In left the air, Tomlin co-wrote and starred in six comedy television specials, for which she earned three Emmy Awards and a Writer’s Guild of America award. She later made notable guest appearances on several hit shows, such as CBS’s Murphy Brown, NBC’s Will & Grace and FX’s Damages, for which she earned another Emmy nomination. Tomlin also provided the voice of Ms. Frizzle on the popular PBS animated children’s series, The Magic School Bus, and in 2002 she joined the cast of NBC’s The West Wing in the recurring role of Debbie Fiderer, the president’s secretary.

Tomlin made her Broadway debut in 1977 in Jane Wagner’s play Appearing Nitely, a one-woman show which featured some of her most beloved and memorable characters and earned her a Tony award for her performance. She then appeared in Wagner’s one-woman The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, which earned her a second Tony award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Play. She later reprised this role in the film adaptation of the same name. Tomlin also earned a Grammy Award for her debut comedy album This is a Recording, as well as nominations for her later releases.

On film, Tomlin made her debut in Nashville (1975) as Linnea Reese, a straight-laced gospel singer and mother of two deaf children, for which she earned an Academy Award nomination, and both the New York Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics voted her Best Supporting Actress. She later notably appeared opposite John Travolta in Jane Wagner’s Moment by Moment (1978) and opposite Dolly Parton in the comedy 9 to 5 (1980). Other highlights in Tomlin’s film career include ensemble casts of Woody Allen’s Shadows and Fog (1992), A Prairie Home Companion (2006), The Walker (2007), and Pink Panther II (2009). For her extensive work in film, Tomlin has received the Crystal Award from Women in Film. More information on Tomlin’s extensive career of TV, film, and comedy can be found at lilytomlin.com.

In the fall of 2003, Tomlin was the recipient of the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor presented at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Tomlin continues to make appearances around the nation and, in 2006, took her classic characters to Australia for shows in Sydney and Melbourne. In November 2009, Tomlin debuted in Las Vegas at The MGM Grand Hotel in her new show entitled Not Playing with a Full Deck. She returned there for two engagements in March and April 2010. In 2011, she returned to Australia for several concert appearances and participated in the Mardi Gras Festival. “She has made the one-person show the daring, irreverent art form it is today.” – Newsweek

Tomlin is currently working on new stage, radio, television and social media projects: she is narrating the HBO documentary, For the Love of Elephants; she is working on a television series about the several members of a bizarre and troubled family making good; and she will soon enter the social media arena with new game apps based on her most beloved characters.

Tickets ($35-$55) for the April 25, 2012, performance of Lily Tomlin at the Byham Theater may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at www.TrustArts.org, or by calling (412) 456-6666. Anoushka Shankar presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

Thursday, April 12, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street

Renowned sitarist Anoushka Shankar has demonstrated why she is one of the leading figures in world music, with her classical Indian background in sitar and interest in exploring the fertile ground of other genres such as jazz and western classical music. She performs Thursday, April 12, 2012, at the Byham Theater, at 7:30 p.m. Anoushka Shankar’s current tour, Traveller: A Raga-Flamenco Journey, also will feature Sandra Carrasco (vocals), Sanjeev Shankar (Shelhnai), Pirashanna Thevarajah (Mridangam, Ghatam, Kanjira, Moorsing), Melón Jimenez (Flamenco Guitar), and Bernhard Schimpelsberger (Cajon and Spanish Percussion). This concert is a part of the Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents Series, and is a presentation of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

Anoushka Shankar was trained in the art of playing the sitar by her father, the legendary virtuoso sitar player, Ravi Shankar. Anoushka made her performing debut at age 13 with her father in New Delhi, and that same year she began recording a track for her father’s album In Celebration. In 1998, at the age of 17, she recorded her first solo album, Anoushka, followed by Anourag (2000) and the concert album Live at Carnegie Hall (2001), for which she received her first Grammy nomination, making her the youngest-ever nominee in the “World Music” category. In recognition of her artistry and musicianship, the British Parliament presented Anoushka with a House of Commons Shield in 1999. She is the youngest as well as the first female recipient of this high honor. In 2004, she was chosen as one of 20 Asian Heroes by the Asia edition of Time magazine.

Though she continues to play Indian classical music on tour with her father, Shankar has begun to compose and arrange her own music, producing her own album, Rise, in 2005. “It was the first record that I composed and envisioned, so it made sense that it should represent more of the types of music I’ve listened to in my personal life. Before, they had always been separate from my role as a classical sitar player. But they didn’t have to be so separate.” The album brought Shankar her second Grammy nomination, this time in the “Best Contemporary World Music” category. Following the Rise album, she formed the Anoushka Shankar Project in order to pursue her present non-classical compositions and better explore a fusion of eastern and western music. This expert cultural fusion continued as she collaborated on Karsh Kale’s 2007 project Breathing Under Water, to which she contributed several tracks, including performances with her half sister, Norah Jones, as well as other artists.

In October 2011, Anoushka released her sixth album, Traveller, a sitar-flamenco recording that features Shubha Mudgal, Concha Buika, Pepe Habichuela and others. The album, which Anoushka calls a “raga flamenco journey,” originated with her wish to retrace the 1,000-year-old bond between Indian and Spanish musical traditions. Her current tour through Europe, India and the U.S. features Anoushka on sitar, accompanied by Indian and flamenco musicians, as well as vocalists and Indian classical dancers who will perform selections from the new album and other music.

“Shankar put on a dazzling show, effortlessly melding the ancient sounds of the sitar with modern electronic and rock textures. In Shankar’s skilled hands, the ethereal instrument took on a life of its own, reinventing itself while still paying homage to its rich history.” – Modesto Bee, California

The Pittsburgh premiere of Treasured Stories by Eric Carle: A Brown Bear, a Moon, and a Caterpillar

April 13-15, 2012, Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street

Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater, a division of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, presents Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia (Canada) in the Pittsburgh premiere of Treasured Stories by Eric Carle (“Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?”, “Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me”, and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”) from April 13-15, 2012, at the Byham Theater. Performance times include Friday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Saturday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and Sunday, April 15 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Citizens Bank is the season sponsor of Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater.

Mermaid Theatre’s live stage production of Treasured Stories by Eric Carle both entertains and educates with a triple-bill including puppetry and black light imagery, bringing to life three tales beloved by children and adults alike. The production features evocative music, stunning visual effects and innovative puppetry, which presents “a quiet delight … brought to memorable life” – Los Angeles Times. The stage adaption is 60 minutes and is recommended for children ages 3-8.

The creative team for the stage adaption of Treasured Stories by Eric Carle includes Jim Morrow, who has ingeniously adapted the Carle stories from page to stage, as well as served as Director and Production Designer. Steven Naylor has created the musical score and overseen the recording of the narration. Daun Windover and Bob Williams contributed to videography and animation elements, while Struan Robertson and Deborah MacLean have lent their production and design skills.

Stories That Inspired the Stage Production

“Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” has been a favorite among young children since its publication in 1967, and not only teaches young children about the different types of animals, but also helps them to learn and distinguish their colors. Described by Kate Taylor as “one of the greatest childhood classics of all time,” the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” published in 1969, educates youngsters on the days of the week, counting, and the process of change. “Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me” also highlights the process of change and imagination, as a young girl’s father climbs to the moon to retrieve it for her, and she observes its many stages.

With an emphasis on imaginative design elements, original music, and challenging texts, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia provides a rich opportunity to acquaint young spectators with the visual and performing arts, as well as with the pleasures of reading. Mermaid Theatre’s programs are specially designed to stimulate classroom learning and enthusiasm for the art of puppetry. Founded in 1972, the company has served to introduce more than four million children on four continents to the magic of live theatre, and also gives excellent outreach opportunities through its Youtheatre activities. The company ranks among North America’s most respected theatres for the young, and has received Export Excellence Awards from both Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada for contributions to the Province’s culture and economy, an award for Best Performing Group from the Canadian Arts Presenting Association, and the Crystal Tourism Ambassador Award from Nova Scotia’s tourism industry leaders in the fall of 2008. In 2010, Mermaid Theatre was awarded a Citation of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry by The American Center of the Union Internationale de la Marionnette for its production of Treasured Stories by Eric Carle.

Eric Carle has illustrated nearly eighty books since his first collaboration on “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” with respected educator and author, Bill Martin, Jr. Many of Carle’s books have become best sellers around the world. Carle is the recipient of the Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Literature Award (Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library 2008), an Honorary Degree from Bates College (Maine 2007) and the NEA Foundation Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education (2007).

The Official Blues Brothers Revue

Thursday, March 8, 2012, at 8:00 PM, Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street

Based on the popular characters from Saturday Night Live and the later motion picture, The Official Blues Brothers Revue will be at the Byham Theater on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at 8:00 PM. The performance is a part of the Cohen and Grigsby Trust Presents series presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

The revue stars Wayne Catania and Kieron Lafferty as Jake and Elwood Blues, characters created by the legendary comedic actors John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. From their first performances as these characters in the award-winning Las Vegas “Legends in Concert” show, the two have appeared across America as highly successful and acclaimed Blues Brothers impersonators.

Soon after their debut in “Legends in Concert,” Catania and Lafferty starred in the A&E docudrama Lost in Las Vegas, largely based on their experiences in the roles. This caught the attention of Belushi’s widow, Judy Belushi Pisano, and her second husband, Victor Pisano. They extended Catania and Lafferty an invitation to audition for the stage musical The Official Blues Brothers Revival. Belushi Pisano expressed her appreciation for the talents of the duo, saying “some looked the part, but nobody had the whole package until [Catania and Lafferty] arrived.”

The revue was written and produced by Victor Pisano and sanctioned by both Dan Aykroyd and the Belushi estate. It ran successfully at the Chicago Center for the Performing Arts in the spring and summer of 2004, combining the comedy and hits of the original movie with an homage to Chicago’s history of blues, gospel and soul music. “Totally awesome, rollicking fun and a whole lot of soul.” - Chicago Skyline Paper

Catania, Lafferty, and “The Intercontinental Rhythm and Blues Revue Band” strike the right balance of humor, music and mayhem that has kept audiences captivated worldwide for decades. “Infectious and unbridled energy… blows the roof off.” - Jeff Johnson, Chicago Sun Times

Wayne Catania and Kieron Lafferty have performed as the Blues Brothers in a number of private venues across North America. Catania also works as a television and commercial actor who has appeared on Bravo’s mini-series Mob Stories. Lafferty is an accomplished singer-songwriter, who has released three CDs of his own material, in addition to contributing to the soundtrack for Lost in Las Vegas.

With the success of the review, Belushi Pisano has revealed that a TV show based on the Blues Brothers is in the works, with plans for Catania and Lafferty to continue their roles as Jake and Elwood Blues.

Tickets ($20.00-$40.00) for the March 8, 2012, performance of The Official Blues Brothers Revue at the Byham Theater may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at www.TrustArts.org, or by calling (412) 456-6666. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents international virtuoso violinist David Garrett - Rock Symphonies II Tour

Sunday, January 29, 2012, at 8:00 p.m., Benedum Center

Internationally-acclaimed violinist David Garrett will return to Pittsburgh on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at 8:00 p.m., at the Benedum Center. This concert is part of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Cohen and Grigsby Trust Presents series, and is a presentation of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

David Garrett’s current U.S. tour, Rock Symphonies II, coincides with and promotes his 2011 CD with same title. Along with his five-piece band, the tour will feature Garrett’s arrangements of rock anthems mixing a little classical with a lot of rock: Vivaldi vs. Vertigo (U2), Walk this Way (Aerosmith), Kashmir (Led Zeppelin), Master of Puppets (Metallica) and Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) to name a few.

Tickets ($30.50-$43.50) may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at www.trustarts.org, or by calling (412) 456-6666. To purchase 10 or more tickets, please call group sales (412) 471-6930.

David Garrett began playing violin at age four and was signed to the prestigious classical music label Deutsche Grammophon by age thirteen. Already described as “…an entire corpus of virtuoso violin art, expounded with a fearsome beauty beyond comprehension” by BBC Music Magazine, David Garrett has achieved a lifetime of musical accomplishments early in his musical career. Garrett has gained international stardom, with gold and platinum selling discs internationally, and chart-topping albums in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Far East and the U.S., plus a Top 20 U.K. hit.

Garrett comments, “Every good musician is always, in effect, a musician of instinct - throughout the course of their life, no matter how much theoretical knowledge is accumulated. For only when you really trust your innermost being, so absolutely convinced of one thing, (then) you can also inspire others.”

David Garrett has been winning over audiences since the release of his self-titled debut album in June 2009. His numerous appearances have included performances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, Today Show, Fox News Channel, CBS Saturday Early Show and his first PBS smash, “Live in Berlin.” His technically jaw-dropping performance of “Flight of the Bumblebee” was recorded in the 2010 Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest-ever performance of the piece (a blistering 66 seconds), wowing crowds across the world. In addition to being the best-selling new classical artist of 2009, he also was Billboard’s #9 highest-charting new artist overall, across all genres. His CD, David Garrett, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover Chart, and held the #1 position for nine weeks, remaining in the Top 10 for more than 40 subsequent weeks. In 2010, Garrett received the Echo Classic Award, “Bestseller of the year,” and in 2011 received the Echo Award for National Male Rock/Pop Artist category.

Cedric Watson and Bijou Creole, presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at 7:30 PM, Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street

Resurrecting the ancient sounds of French and Spanish dances alongside the spiritual rhythms of the Congo tribes of West Africa, Louisiana musician Cedric Watson and band members Bijou Creole perform on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at 7:30 PM at the Byham Theater. The concert is a part of the Cohen and Grigsby Trust Presents Series, presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

One of the most promising talents to emerge in Cajun, Creole, and Louisianan Zydeco music, Cedric Watson is a four-time Grammy nominee from San Felipe, Texas, who made his first public appearance in Houston at age 19. “An aggressive and gifted reanimator of Louisiana Creole music, Cedric Watson sings in entrancing brays and yelps and plays fiddle and accordion in cocksure fashion” – The New York Times. Watson received a Grammy nomination for his self-titled debut album, released in 2008. He has performed on six additional full-length albums, including three with his own band, Bijou Creole – members: D’Jalma Garnier (fiddle and guitar), Ryan Poullard (drums), Lance Boston (clarinet), and “Zydeco” Mike Chaisson (percussion).

As a singer, fiddler, accordionist, and songwriter, Watson is a diverse young artist whose repertoire ranges from old Creole melodies to more modern Cajun and Zydeco songs. The band also draws on various musical styles, often incorporating bluegrass or string band numbers into performance sets. Additionally, Watson composes almost all of the band’s songs on his own accordion. The band’s 2009 release L’ésprit Créole received a Grammy nomination and featured entirely original material. In 2011, Watson and the band released their self-produced album Le Soleil est Levé. The album features Watson's special mix of Caribbean and Cajun flavor, crossing international barriers while delivering songs of joy.

Drawing on their mixed cultural heritage and varied musical backgrounds, Watson and Bijou Creole combine Spanish, African, French, and Native American sounds to make a unique tapestry during their performance which “runs the gamut” of Cajun and Creole music. “[I]t manages to retain an organic quality that makes for an engaging listen. ... Stirring vocals weave expertly around and through well-crafted rhythms and melodies.” – Living Blues. Watson finds the interrelation of cultures in his music extremely important, particularly the Native American rhythms, and works to create a unique sound that is at once both progressive and nostalgic.

Tickets ($18.00-$35.00) for the February 8, 2012, performance of Cedric Watson and Bijou Creole at the Byham Theater may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at www.TrustArts.org, or by calling (412) 456-6666. To purchase 10 or more tickets at special discounted rates, please call (412) 471-6930.
