HONORED WITH 1st GRAMMY® AWARD
BEST JAZZ VOCAL ALBUM: "LIQUID SPIRIT”

PITTSBURGH, PA:  Gregory Porter has won his first Grammy® Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album Liquid Spirit.  Porter’s award was announced at the 56th Annual Grammy® Awards held on Sunday, January 26, 2014 in Los Angeles.

Gregory Porter, who has been deemed as a disarmingly sincere jazz and R& B performer with a groove that never quits, possesses a voice of incredible virtuosity and a seemingly universal appeal as a songwriter.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Raised in California, Porter’s mother was a minister, and he cites the Bakersfield Southern Gospel sound, as well as his mother’s Nat King Cole record collection, as fundamental influences on his own sound. Porter began singing in small jazz clubs in San Diego while attending San Diego State University on a football scholarship, where he played outside linebacker. Eventually it was music that Porter chose to pursue full-time at the encouragement of local musicians including his mentor Kamau Kenyatta.

Kenyatta invited Porter to visit him in the studio in Los Angeles, where he was producing the flutist Hubert Laws’ album Remembers the Unforgettable Nat King Cole. When Laws overheard Porter singing along while he was tracking the Charlie Chaplin song “Smile,” the flutist was so impressed with the young singer that he decided to include Porter on the album.

Another fortunate twist of fate was the presence in the studio that day of Laws’ sister, Eloise, a singer who was soon to join the cast of a new musical theater production It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues. Porter had minimal theatrical experience but was cast in one of the show’s lead roles when the play opened in Denver, and he eventually followed it to Off-Broadway and then Broadway, where The New York Times, in its 1999 rave review, mentioned Porter among the show’s “powerhouse line up of singers.” It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues went on to earn both Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations that year.

Porter eventually put down roots in Brooklyn, and in 2010 released his debut album Water (Motéma Music), which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. His sophomore album Be Good (Motéma Music) followed in 2012 and earned him his second GRAMMY nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust continues its tenth consecutive year of live jazz, moving the venue indoors for the winter and spring. Free and open to the public, this season’s BNY Mellon | Jazz Presents JazzLive series showcases some of the region’s finest musicians. Performances in this series are Tuesdays, September 2013–May 2014, from 5–9 p.m., at Backstage Bar (655 Penn Avenue), in the heart of the Cultural District, unless otherwise noted.  The event moves indoors for the winter/spring season.

Pittsburgh, PA - The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is proud to present the third annual JazzLive International Festival (PJLIF) on June 7-9, 2013.  The Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival will consist of three days of free jazz and jazz-influenced musical performances on outdoor stages throughout downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Held in conjunction with the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, the Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival attracts over 20,000 attendees from around the country. The Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival features local, emerging, and national and international musicians in a variety of performance settings that include:

•         Outdoor performance stages and indoor performance locations within local restaurants, coffee shops and galleries.
•         A free Jazz Crawl in the Cultural District, featuring 150 local and regional musicians.
•         Late night club performances.
•         Showcase Noir Artist Showcase: An African American Designer Market that includes pottery, paintings, jewelry, fiber works, and sculptures available for sale by some of the region’s finest artists.        

“The PJLIF has expanded greatly in the last 2 years,” says Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President and Director of Jazz Programs for The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. “The Trust will present over 240 artists in 72 hours. Our headlining performers are world-renowned mainstream and contemporary jazz, R&B and blues artists. Downbeat Magazine described PJLIF as “intimate, laid back and inviting”. The JazzLive Jam Sessions after hours have become legendary amongst musicians.  Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival has something for everyone that wants to celebrate America’s classical music - Jazz.”


CONFIRMED HEADLINE ARTISTS

Chaka Khan

Chaka Khan
"Queen of Funk-Soul," Chaka Khan is a 10-time Grammy Award winning American singer-songwriter who gained fame in the 1970s as the front woman and focal point of the funk band Rufus. Her career has spanned over 4 decades. Over the years, she has collaborated with many legendary performers in the industry that include but are not limited to Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder and Prince.  Some of her most popular hits include "Tell Me Something Good," "Sweet Thing,” "Ain't Nobody," "I'm Every Woman," "I Feel for You" and "Through the Fire."  In 1982, Khan recorded Echoes of an Era, a collection of jazz standards featuring performances from Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea, and Lenny White. This project provided Chaka Khan with her first Grammy Nomination for Best Female Jazz Vocalist.  Born Yvette Marie Stevens, in North Chicago Illinois, Chaka received an honorary doctorate degree from Berklee College of Music in 2004. She is also active in the autism community, having family members who have been diagnosed with the condition. Her Earth Song Entertainment and Chaka Khan Foundation operate from Beverly Hills, California to raise research money for a cure.  She is also the recipient of the 2006 BET Lifetime Achievement Award and has received four American Music Award nominations.

Rudresh Mahanthappa
Few musicians share the ability of saxophonist/composer Rudresh Mahanthappa to embody the expansive possibilities of his music with his culture. Time and again, Mahanthappa has eloquently displayed the capacity to absorb numerous styles and genres of music, combine them with the language of modern jazz, and emerge with a new form still recognizably jazz.  What has materialized is a sound that hybridizes progressive jazz and South Indian classical music in a fluid and forward-looking form that reflects Mahanthappa’s own experience growing up a second-generation Indian-American. He has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship and commissions from the Rockefeller Foundation MAP Fund, Chamber Music America and the American Composers Forum. He has been named alto saxophonist of the year in Downbeat’s 2011 & 2012 International Critics Polls and for four years running by the Jazz Journalists’ Association (2009-2012). Rudresh has studied at Berklee College of Music and DePaul University.

Marcus Miller
Marcus Miller is a two-time Grammy-winner and the composer/producer of ten critically acclaimed and genre-defying albums. As a multi-instrumentalist, Marcus is highly proficient as a keyboardist, clarinetist/bass clarinetist and, primarily, as a world-renowned electric bassist, topping critics' and readers' polls for three decades.  His résumé as an A-list player brims with over 500 recording credits as a sideman on albums across the spectrum of musical styles that include collaborations with Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Donald Fagen and Eric Clapton, David Sanborn, George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Sample, Wayne Shorter, Grover Washington, Jr., Roberta Flack, Paul Simon, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Chaka Khan, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Z.Z. Hill, Billy Idol, Al Jarreau, Dave Koz and opera sensation Kathleen Battle.  As a film music pro, Miller rose from writing the go-go party classic "Da Butt" for Spike Lee's "School Daze,” to becoming the go-to composer for over 20 films including the Eddie Murphy/Halle Berry classic “Boomerang.”

Pat Martino
Philadelphia native, Pat Martino, began playing professionally at age 15 after moving to New York City. Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gut-wrenching performances, he represents the best not just in jazz, but also in music.  He embodies thoughtful energy and soul and has performed with a wide variety of artists including Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Jimmy Smith, Chick Corea, Jack McDuff, and Stanley Clark. The Grammy nominated virtuoso has been selected as the Guitar Player of the Year, Downbeat Magazine's 2004 Reader's Poll and has taught at several prestigious universities including Duquesne, New York University, Pennsylvania University, Stanford University. He’s also been a recording artist for Blue Note, Prestige, Vanguard and Warner Brothers Records.

Returning to the Festival stage is Artist-in-Residence for the Sound and Spirit initiative, Sean Jonesand the Sean Jones Quartet.  Sean Jones is a trumpeter, composer and educator. He was formerly the lead trumpet player with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra directed by Wynton Marsalis. Jones is currently a professor of Jazz Studies at Duquesne University and has eight critically acclaimed jazz albums to his credit.  The multi-Grammy Award nominee is particularly adept at plumbing complex emotional plateaus through his trumpet playing and composing. Most recently, he’s toured with Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller and Wayne Shorter in Europe with a project that celebrated the Miles Davis legacy.  Jones’ heart stopping quartet consists of Philadelphia-based pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Luques Curtis, and Miami-born drummer Obed Calvaire. No matter what angle they take on the subject, Jones and company’s blazing interactions reveals what any jazz fan knows is the greatest love of all: that between an artist and his music. As Jones says, “I like to play from the heart and not the head.”

Other outstanding artists participating in the Festival include Gregory Porter, Latin legend Eddie Palmieri and his Salsa Orchestra, the Orrin Evans Trio, young vocalist and composer of Haitian descent Sarah Elizabeth Charles, Cyrille Aimee & Diego Figueiredo, Ralph Peterson, Gerald Clayton,Roger Humphries,  and Allison Miller, an up and coming New York folk jazz drummer. Pittsburgh native musicians Allan Harris/David Budway will pay tribute to the music of jazz masters Billy Eckstine and Billy Strayhorn in an intimate jazz session entitled Billy Squared².

Al Bright : Abstract Jazz Works
 During this year’s Festival, join internationally renowned abstract expressionist artist Al Bright as he creates paintings before audiences to live jazz music.  Over his career, he has collaborated with world famous musicians Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Jimmy Owens, James Williams, Billy Pierce, and Robin Eubanks.  His paintings are held in museums, corporate and private collections throughout the United States and abroad.  Al Bright is currently Professor Emeritus of Art at Youngstown State University where he has taught painting for over 40 years.

Pittsburgh, Pa: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and BNY Mellon JazzLive series present the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra “On the Road” at the Cabaret at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh, on Tuesday, October 2. at  8:00 p.m.  Tickets ($20) are on sale at the Theater Square Box Office, 655 Penn Avenue, by phone at 412-456-6666, and online at trustarts.org. This season, the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra will be "on the road," performing at a variety of venues around the Pittsburgh area. The Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, led by Artistic Director, Sean Jones, will be comprised of a slightly different configuration than the usual big band. Jones says, “this season it’s time for PJO to spread its wings and share America’s indigenous art form throughout the region.” The band will also perform original compositions by Associate Artistic Director, Mike Tomaro.

In addition to performing in the Cabaret, the PJO have developed a musical component, with artist educator, Alison Babusci, for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s PNC Grow Up Great Arts Program. The activities are geared towards preschoolers, and will serve the students that attend the downtown Pittsburgh daycare centers. Complete with multicolored kazoos, the children will “Jam” with the band on Tuesday, October 9 in the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Education Center, 805-807 Liberty Avenue, and again for a special Holiday Junior Jam Session.

15 Free Outdoor Concerts will be held weekly in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District.


Pittsburgh, PA-   For the ninth consecutive year, “JazzLive” presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, brings the community together with jazz music every Tuesday at 5 pm, from June 6 through September 11, 2012.The JazzLive series sponsor is BNY Mellon.  Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President of Education & Community Engagement and Director of Jazz Programs with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust comments, “When we first started, our objective was to bring people together and celebrate the music that Pittsburgh is known for around the world. I’m extremely pleased that we’ve been able to achieve that goal and very happy that we’ve been downtown Pittsburgh’s Tuesday evening party for the last ten years!”

Roger Humphries (June 26); Maureen Budway & Friends (July 31); and Poogie Bell (August 21) are just some of the featured musicians performing in the summer 2012 JazzLive series.  On Tuesday, September 11, a JazzLive Jam Session with Sean Jones & Friends will end the summer outdoor jazz season.

JazzLive concerts are held outdoors at the Agnes R. Katz Plaza, corner of 7th Street and Penn Avenue, in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.  All concerts are from 5 to 7 p.m., rain or shine.  In case of inclement weather, the music moves indoors to the Backstage Bar at Theater Square, 7th Street and Penn Avenue.

Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Showcase Noir is an exhibit that celebrates the works of artists and designers of the African Diaspora. 2012 marks the 9th year the Cultural Trust has presented this exhibit showcasing works for sale -  paintings, sculptures, photographs, fiber art, jewelry, pottery and art in various mediums  ̶  from emerging and established artists, both local and national.

The exhibit will be located under the tents at the corner of 8th Street and Penn Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.  Exhibit hours are Saturday, June 2: Noon to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 3: Noon to 7:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust celebrates city's rich jazz legacy with second annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival

June 1-3, 2012 - Pittsburgh's Cultural District

The second annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival (PJLIF) returns to downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District on Friday, June 1, through Sunday, June 3, 2012, for an expanded weekend of music, art and celebration. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust produces this annual event to celebrate Pittsburgh’s jazz legacy in cooperation with the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. The event features a JazzLive Crawl in 30 downtown venues on Friday; three outdoor stages on Saturday and Sunday; a lineup of regional, national and internationally acclaimed musicians; and on Sunday a visual art show dedicated to the African and African American diaspora.

“The overarching theme of programming of this year’s festival is ‘family,’” says Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President and Director of Jazz Programs for The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. “Jazz appreciation is passed down through the generations. Pittsburgh has families of musicians who have been trailblazers in jazz and who carry on the deep tradition and respect for the music. There will be a number of families performing in this festival: brothers, sisters, children of important jazz figures in Pittsburgh.”

In total over 240 artists, including 140 local musicians, will perform at the Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival in downtown restaurants, coffee shops, and galleries and on three large outdoor stages along the Penn Avenue corridor. Featured PJLIF musicians include: Monty Alexander, Poogie Bell, The Clayton Brothers, Fort Apache with Andy & Jerry Gonzalez, Robert Glasper, Alan Harris, Lalah Hathaway, Sean Jones, Soul Cycle, Jeff “Tain” Watts and The Average White Band among many others.

There is no admission to attend the performances at the outdoor stages. Seating in restaurants, however, during the Jazzlive Crawl on Friday, June 1, is only available for dining patrons. On Saturday, June 2, Sean Jones, who was named artist-in-residence for the new initiative Sound & Spirit, will debut a new commissioned piece. Central to the Sound & Spirit program are community and school workshops with residents who contribute to the writing and composition process; the program’s goal is to create music truly inspired by the people of the City of Pittsburgh.

Cultural Trust's JazzLive celebrates National Jazz Appreciation Month at the Cabaret

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust JazzLive series celebrates National Jazz Appreciation Month in April with 5 performances that embrace the multidirectional influence of jazz music. The series, NORTH.SOUTH.EAST.WEST…Directions in JAZZLIVE will kick off with a student matinee in the Byham Theater featuring the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra in a Jazz at Lincoln Center presentation called, “Tell It! The Story of American Music” on Monday, April 2, 2012.

The first evening performance of NORTH.SOUTH.EAST.WEST…Directions will be Gregory Porter on the Cabaret at Theater Square stage at 8pm. The BBC has called California-born, Porter’s voice “a marvel: warm assured tenor with precise, impeccable intonation, completely at home in classy originals that-like all good jazz-seem to bathe in timeless familiarity.” Gregory Porter performance is highly anticipated, due to his successful performance in the first Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival.

On April 10th, The Trust welcomes Cuban jazz legend, Chuchito Valdes and his trio. The Havana-born piano extraordinaire, Valdes, comes from one of Cuba’s most distinguished musical families. His fiery performance style is sure to delight and get the audience dancing in the aisles of the Cabaret Theater.

The northern influence of the month of programming hails from Vancouver, B.C. with the Cory Weeds Quartet, with special guest, Joey DeFrancesco, who is considered by many music critics to be the finest jazz organist on the planet. Weeds is a saxophonist, jazz club owner, producer, composer, and musical agent. His entire life is jazz drenched, thus making him a perfect addition to the JazzLive concert repertoire. They will perform in the Cabaret on April 17th.

Finally, The Trust will feature East Coast jazz vocalist, Rachelle Ferrell for a rare Pittsburgh engagement. Ferrrell made her mark as a crossover artists, but she uses her voice in ways that make her a vital part of any jazz instrumental ensemble. She is considered one of the most dynamic talents in music today.

Pittsburgh, PA: Today The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust launches the first inaugural Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival in the Cultural District. The weekend of music kicks off tonight with a JazzLive Crawl and continues on Saturday with national and internationally renowned musicians on the JazzLive Summer stages, concluding on Sunday with a visual art show, plus concert by soul legend Bettye LaVette. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Pittsburgh JazzLive International is produced in cooperation with Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, June 3-12th.

“Highmark supports JazzLive International because it will provide Pittsburgh residents, and those who are visiting from out of town, with the opportunity to enjoy the countless cultural amenities our city has to offer,” said Mary Anne Papale, Highmark’s director of community affairs.

On Friday, June 3rd, the JazzLive Crawl will feature two dozen venues in the Cultural District from 5:30-9pm, with a variety of regional acts. Downtown Cultural District restaurants, galleries, and coffee shops will participate. Entrance is free; however seating is available only for patrons dining at participating restaurants.

On Saturday, June 4th, the three JazzLive Summer Stages—located at 9th Street and Liberty, Liberty Avenue between 9th and 10th, Penn Avenue between 9th and 10th—will feature the following artists:

Two Major Festivals Impact Road and Garage Access in Pittsburgh

Road closures announced for two major festivals next week

Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will host two of the city’s biggest events this summer: the 52nd annual Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival (June 3-12) and the first annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival (June 3-5).

For the safety of our guests and participants of the Arts Festival, the following street closures will occur around Point State Park and western edge of the Cultural District:

From 10:00am on May 31 through 10:00pm on June 14, two lanes of Commonwealth Place between Penn Avenue Extension and Ft. Duquesne Boulevard, adjacent to Point State Park, will be closed.

Traffic will continue to flow in both directions in the remaining two lanes of Commonwealth closest to the Wyndham Grand Hotel.

From 6pm - 12am on Thursday, June 2, and 8pm – 12am on June 5, 7, 9 and 12, the following temporary closures will be in effect:

Two lanes of Penn Avenue Extension outbound will be between Stanwix Street and Commonwealth Place.

All lanes of Liberty Avenue Extension inbound from the entrance to Gateway Center Parking Garage to Stanwix Street

Parking meters and curbside lanes along Commonwealth Place between Ft. Pitt Boulevard and Liberty Avenue.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival 2011, the following road closures will be taking place in the upper Penn-Liberty corridor of the Cultural District at 7am – 12am on Saturday, June 4, 2011:

Penn Avenue from Courtyard Marriott Pittsburgh Downtown to 9th Street

9th Street between Liberty Avenue and Penn Avenue

Liberty Avenue from 10th Street to Smithfield Street

Garrison Way from between French Street and Exchange Way

Exchange Way from Garrison Way to 9th Street


Please note the following:

Access to all Pittsburgh Parking Authority Garages and all parking garages noted above will be open and will not be impeded by the road closures, with exception of the 9th and Penn Parking lot on June 4, 2011.

All of the above closures are in addition to street closures for Port Authority construction, Fifth Avenue Place construction, Pittsburgh Pirates home games, Pride in the Streets and PrideFest.

Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will launch Pittsburgh JazzLive International, a new jazz festival on June 3-5, 2011, in the Cultural District. The weekend of music will include a JazzLive Crawl, outdoor stages, national and internationally renowned musicians and a visual art show. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Pittsburgh JazzLive International is produced in cooperation with Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, June 3-12th.

Janis Burley Wilson, Director of Jazz Programs and Vice President of Education and Community Engagement for The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust says, “Pittsburgh JazzLive International is an expansion of our current year-round jazz programming, and allows the Trust to showcase our regional talent. We also see this festival as an opportunity to bring together legendary artists and the up-and-coming musicians who share with audiences what the future holds for jazz.”

On Friday, June 3rd, the JazzLive Crawl will feature two dozen venues in the Cultural District from 5:30-9pm, with a variety of regional acts featured. Downtown Cultural District restaurants, galleries, and coffee shops will participate (details below). Entrance is free; however seating is available only for patrons dining at participating restaurants.

On Saturday, June 4th, the three JazzLive Summer Stages—located at 9th Street and Liberty, Liberty Avenue between 9th and 10th, Penn Avenue between 9th and 10th—will kick off with free live music at 12 noon. Pittsburghers Chelsea Baratz, Craig Davis, and jazz legend Roger Humphries, who have moved on to perform nationally and internationally, will be showcased. Center of Life, the finalist in the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation competition, will perform their first show since winning at Monterey. The Sean Jones Quintet, Gretchen Parlato, Gregory Porter are young, rising stars that will show us what’s new and next in music. Latin jazz master, Bobby Sanabria and his Quarteto Ache, as well as African-French duo, Les Nubians, bring an international flavor to the line-up. And lastly, soul/funk/jazz sensation Soulive will close the evening.

On Sunday, June 5th, Showcase Noir, the African American artist and designer showcase will fill the halls of the Byham Theater with visual art and live jazz. The evening of June 5th, the Cultural Trust has partnered with Grey Area Productions to present soul and blues diva, Bettye LaVette at Altar Bar in the Strip District. Tickets can be purchased through the Pittsburgh JazzLive International website.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust celebrates National Jazz Appreciation Month in April with Vocal Styling Series


PITTSBURGH, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust ushers in National Jazz Appreciation Month in April with a series of concerts celebrating the art of vocal jazz. The VOCAL STYLINGS series, presented by the Trust’s department of Education and Community Engagement, is supported by BNY Mellon Jazz Presents and is a part of the Trust’s regular ongoing jazz series, JAZZLIVE. The performances will take place at the Trust’s Cabaret Theater and Backstage Bar in the Cultural District.

Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President of the Trust’s Education and Community Engagement Department, says, “We are focusing on diverse voices in jazz. Each of the artists we are featuring in the VOCAL STYLINGS series has a distinctive sound and utilizes their voices in unique ways to tell a story.”

In describing the series’ line-up Burley Wilson added, “Benny Benack III is an emerging artist, destined to be an important voice in jazz. Sachal Vasandani is recognized by Downbeat Magazine; he brings a fresh interpretation and style to jazz. Bobby Caldwell is a legend in R & B and smooth jazz as well as an accomplished jazz standards revivalist. Regardless of what style Bobby Caldwell performs on stage, he is the consummate show man. Karrin Allyson’s richly textured phrasing and ability to tell a story with song has made her one of the most important voices in jazz today.”

The Smithsonian launched National Jazz Appreciation Month in 2001 to pay tribute to jazz as a both a living and historic art form. It has grown to include celebrations in all 50 states and 40 countries.
