About the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has overseen one of Pittsburgh’s most historic transformations: turning a seedy red-light district into a magnet destination for arts lovers, residents, visitors, and business owners. Founded in 1984, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a non-profit arts organization whose mission is the cultural and economic revitalization of a 14-block arts and entertainment/residential neighborhood called the Cultural District. The District is one of the country’s largest land masses “curated” by a single nonprofit arts organization. A major catalytic force in the city, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a unique model of how public-private partnerships can reinvent a city with authenticity, innovation and creativity.  Using the arts as an economic catalyst, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has holistically created a world-renowned Cultural District that is revitalizing the city, improving the regional economy and enhancing Pittsburgh’s quality of life. Thanks to the support of foundations, corporations, government agencies and thousands of private citizens, the Trust stands as a national model of urban redevelopment through the arts.  www.TrustArts.org

GLEN CAMPBELL - THE GOODBYE TOUR

Sunday, May 20, 2012 - Byham Theater

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, 91.3fm WYEP and Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, through the CD Live! Concert series, are pleased to announce Glen Campbell – The Goodbye Tour on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at the Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street in Downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets for Glen Campbell – The Goodbye Tour go on sale Friday, March 2, 2012, at 9 a.m. Opening for Glen Campbell is the band Instant People.

Glen Campbell is a bonafide living legend whose career spans 50 years with fans that cross generational and international lines. A revered triple-decker talent, he is a musician, singer, and humorist. Worldwide, Glen Campbell is considered one of the outstanding guitar musicians of his generation, has one of the most formidable chart histories in country music, and has recorded standards that have stood the test of time, such as “By The Time I Get To Phoenix,” “Gentle On My Mind,” “Galveston,” “Rhinestone Cowboy,” and “Wichita Lineman.” He has released over 70 albums and sold more than 45 million records with 75 trips up the charts, landing 27 times in the Top 10.

Glen’s current album, Ghost On the Canvas, was released in the fall of 2011 on Sundog Records. Simply put, Ghost On the Canvas is the album of Glen Campbell’s life. With beauty, power, heartfelt emotion and deep spirituality, this set of songs traces the arc of Campbell’s 75 years: From dirt-poor, tiny-town Arkansas origins to Hollywood triumphs on the pop charts, TV and movies. From barnstorming days of youthful touring to hobnobbing with Elvis, Sinatra and the Duke. From troubled freefalls of addiction and bad life choices to personal and spiritual redemption. Campbell has said Ghost On the Canvas will be his final album with a glorious, celebratory guitar jam featuring such colleagues and acolytes as Billy Corgan, Brian Setzer, Rick Nielsen, Jason Falkner, Marty Rifkin, Steve Hunter, Tim Pierce and Keith Urban. The album was largely written by Campbell with producer-collaborator Julian Raymond, complemented by contributions from Jakob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, Teddy Thompson and Robert Pollard, with evocative instrumental interludes composed by Roger Manning as musical illustration.

Tickets $52.50, $57.50 and $62.50 will go on sale Friday, May 2, at 9 a.m. at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), trustarts.org and 412-456-6666.

Indigo Girls Sparkle with Live Performance of Beauty Queen Sister

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Today's date: September 19, 2011

Indigo Girls

Friday, November 4, 2011, at 8 p.m.

Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust welcomes back to the Cultural District the venerated singer-songwriting duo Indigo Girls as a part of its CDLive! series. Indigo Girls’ staying power, marked by a successful, 25-year career, is fueled by Amy Ray and Emily Saliers’ poignant songwriting, a loyal fan following and passionate live performances. Indigo Girls’ complex, literate canon of work is heard regularly on 91.3fm WYEP.

The prolific, GRAMMY® Award-winning Indigo Girls are touring in support of their 14th studio recording, Beauty Queen Sister, and will perform at the Cultural Trust’s Byham Theater on Friday, November 4 at 8 p.m. The CDLive! series, presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Three Rivers Arts Festival (a program of the Cultural Trust) and 91.3fm WYEP, brings outstanding recording artists to world-class venues. This collaboration of non-profit organizations aims to build audiences for new music and cultivate patronage in the Cultural District.

Beauty Queen Sister is an 13-song album that touches on topics as disparate as the 2011 Egyptian revolution (in Ray’s plaintive “War Rugs,” featuring guest vocals by singer-songwriter Lucy Wainwright Roche), the ins and outs of the music industry (“Making Promises,” a defiant, guitar-driven banger also authored by Ray), and the recent massive deaths of Arkansas redwinged blackbrids (“Able to Sing,” in which Saliers cleverly swipes a lyric from the English nursery rhyme “Sing a Song of Sixpence”). Tackling such weighty matters as tenderly as each intimate love song, Beauty Queen Sister grips from the get-go and crests at the epic “Yoke.” With its centerpiece of hauntingly urgent strings (courtesy of Luke Bulla) and a gorgeously mournful vocal performance by Ray, this spellbinding slow-burner makes for a masterful closing track.”

Tickets ($33.50, $38.50, $43.50) for Indigo Girls on Friday, November 4, 2011, at 8 p.m., at the Byham Theater go on sale this Friday, September 23, at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at trustarts.org, or by calling (412) 456-6666. To purchase 10 or more tickets at special discounted rates, please call (412) 471-6930.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Welcomes Back

The Decemberists

Tuesday, April 21, 2011

The Benedum Center

8 P.M.

PITTSBURGH, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, 91.3fm WYEP and Three Rivers Arts Festival, through the CD Live! Concert series, are pleased to announce the return engagement of The Decemberists on Tuesday, April 21, 2011 at the Benedum Center in the Downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets for the Decemberists go on sale Friday, February 11. Opening for The Decemberists is Justin Townes Earle (son of singer-songwriter Steve Earle).

Led by Colin Meloy, The Decemberists craft theatrical, idiosyncratic chamber pop rock that seamlessly translates to unforgettable live performances. Bridging the gap between British folk revival and contemporary indie pop, The Decemberists are one of the most innovative and important creative forces in contemporary music today.

Following the success of their mystical epic The Hazards of Love, The Decemberists return with their sixth album, The King Is Dead. In their latest recording, The Decemberists illustrate the power that evolves from a creative call-and-response process.

To Colin Meloy, The King is Dead represents his own musical journey coming full circle. “Over the last eleven years or so, since I moved to Portland, I feel like I've been mining mostly English traditions for influence.” “I've kind of come back to a lot of the more American music that got me going in the first place – R.E.M. and Camper Van Beethoven and all these bands that borrowed from more American traditions like Neil Young and the Byrds.”

Tickets $39.50 and $34.50 may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), by visiting pgharts.org or by calling 412-456-6666. To purchase 10 or more tickets at special discounted rates, please call 412-471-6930.

CD Live! Presents: Aimee Mann

September 22, 2010 at 8 p.m.

New Hazlett Theater

PITTSBURGH, PA: CD Live!, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Three Rivers Arts Festival, WYEP 91.3FM and New Hazlett Theater present Aimee Mann live in concert on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at 8 p.m. Folk pop singer-songwriter Aimee Mann returns to Pittsburgh for a special performance at the New Hazlett Theater, Allegheny Square East, to perform songs from her latest album @#%&* SMILERS. Tickets are $38.25 and can be purchased at The Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), by calling 412-456-6666, or visiting pgharts.org.

From her work in the 80’s with MTV favorite Til Tuesday through her acclaimed solo discs “Whatever” and “I’m With Stupid” in the 90s, Aimee Mann has always been at the forefront of contemporary songwriters. The close of the millennium brought her greatest success, with the simultaneous releases of Bachelor No. 2 and the soundtrack to the film Magnolia, which garnered nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and three Grammys. After a decade in which her music often took a backseat to corporate mergers and contractual obligations, the message was clear: Aimee Mann is here to stay.

On her new album, @#%&* SMILERS, Los Angeles singer songwriter Aimee Mann notes: "I've always been fascinated with eccentric personalities". On Smilers, her seventh solo CD, Mann presents thirteen exquisitely-crafted new songs about the inner life of people living far from the bright lights of success or fame. Some of them are wanderers searching for meaning on the road, others look for it in a shot glass or by losing themselves in the blue trance of a tv set, and still others believe their deliverance will come through money. From the punch drunk characters haunting the twilight world of a dusty downtown boxing gym, to a onetime financial big shot who's returned home after taking a tumble, Mann paints spare, vivid portraits of people who seem to always wind up with the smallest slice of American pie. The songs are soulful, empathetic and somehow ultimately hopeful and optimistic. Says Mann, “When I write about them -- the narcissists, performers, eccentrics, know-it-alls - it helps me recognize some truths about the world and about myself."
