In her new exhibit at 709 Penn Gallery, Proud to be an American?, Pittsburgh photographer Rebecca Chiappelli explores the meaning of patriotism from diverse perspectives.  "If a universal form of patriotism ever existed, it is not present in today's culture," says Chiappelli.  Proud to be an American? is a simple question with a complex answer.  Over the past century, many key events such as world wars, technological advancements, and shifts in the economy have influenced our definition of patriotism.  Even today, our definition is expanding due to challenges from external sources like the media and globalization.

"I began this project with a close-minded view of what it meant to be patriotic," says Chiappelli.  "Interviews and personal testimonies challenged me on the various ways people express their passions about living in America.  As a nation, it is important to understand that there isn't a universal definition; we might all be patriotic and love our country, but just show it in different ways.  We need to understand those differences in order to still be unified.  After all, United We Stand, Divided We Fall."

Bea Chiappelli (b.1981) was born and raised in small town America and currently resides in Pittsburgh, PA. Chiapelli earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Mercyhurst College, with a concentration in Fashion Merchandising and Associate’s Degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology. After working in the retail industry for several years, Chiappelli decided to leave that field and purse her passion for photography.  She earned her MFA in 2012 from the Academy of Art University, with a concentration in Photography.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the upcoming Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District is taking place on Friday September 28, 2012, from 5:30 – 9:00 p.m., downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District. The Gallery Crawl is an urban showcase featuring a wide variety of thought provoking art exhibitions, live bands, DJs, dance, theater, and more. Pittsburgh, PA- The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Summer Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District takes place on Friday, July 13, 2012, from 5:30 – 9:00 p.m.  The Gallery Crawl is an urban showcase featuring a wide variety of thought provoking art exhibitions, live bands, DJs, dance, theater, and more.  Everything from the traditional to the avant garde is on display for art lovers of all ages.

Headliners for the Summer Gallery Crawl are the Occidental Brothers Dance Band from Chicago.  Blending Afrobeat and traditional African guitar style, this band is sure to have people dancing long in to the night.  In addition, DJ Nate da Phat Barber will play during the band breaks, and continue his DJ set after the Crawl so the party can continue in to the night.

Pittsburgh, PA: “We navigate with ease today with online directions and satellite signaling.  GPS systems guide us along our routes, correcting every wrong turn. Exploration and wayfinding in other ages, however, were fraught with difficulties and conflict,” notes curator Murray Horne in his essay on the exhibition Global Navigators on display through June 17, as part of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Distinctively Dutch Festival, which concludes this weekend.

The 1600s were a golden era for the Dutch, the age of Rembrandt and Vermeer and a relatively tolerant society that distinguished itself as a haven for the oppressed.  It was a prosperous age, with coffers filled by the greatest merchant fleet in the world. Amsterdam became its glittering financial capital, the center of the new Dutch Empire.

In 1602, the Dutch East India Company was created to find an all-water route to Asia and occupy unclaimed lands along the way. Twelve years later, the New Netherland Company was formed and received a three-year monopoly from the Dutch government to occupy lands between New France and the English claims in Virginia. The company operated the fur trade profitably, but was unable to entice settlers into the area.

The Dutch needed permanent settlements in order to hold New World possessions against French and English competition. In 1621, the Dutch West India Company was formed to conduct activities in West Africa and the Western Hemisphere. Recipients of a 24-year monopoly, the investors began by establishing a permanent settlement on lands formerly belonging to the New Netherland Company.

In 1624, a shipload of Flemish Walloons sailed to the New World, subsequently spreading themselves throughout the claim along the Delaware, Connecticut and Hudson Rivers.  Outlying ventures were under constant threat of attack by Native Americans and most were abandoned, but New Netherland emerged as areas were settled in the current Mid-Atlantic States of New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Connecticut, with small outposts in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.  Its provincial capital was New Amsterdam, now Manhattan.

This spring, the Dutch occupy Pittsburgh, a city of three other rivers, throughthe Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Distinctively Dutch Festival, a three-month festival that celebrates the culture and contemporary performing and visual arts from the Netherlands through May 2012.

Global Navigators explores and embodies our continued fascination with global cultures through various media, forms and processes.  The eight exhibiting artists all hold Dutch citizenship or live in Holland, but their imagery crosses geographical, ideological, technical and aesthetic boundaries, spanning Maoist guerrilla group operating in the Philippines to a 747 descending over Hong Kong.  Their works move from the North Pole to more nebulous locations, crafting and critiquing our claims to the earth and the powers that reign over its regions and inhabitants. Together, their efforts embrace and extend the historical context of Dutch exploration, charting a contemporary expedition with new media across emerging globalization.

YWCA seeks nominations for 2012 Tribute to Women Leadership Awards

Nomination deadline is February 8

PITTSBURGH, PA (January 19, 2012): Do you know an exceptional woman who has made a difference for other women in our community? It’s time to nominate her for a 2012 Tribute to Women Leadership Award. The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh is currently accepting nominations through Wednesday, February 8.

The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh launched the Tribute to Women Leadership Awards in 1983 to affirm its mission to empower women and girls to reach their personal and professional goals. Since then, the YWCA has honored the accomplishments of more than 200 exceptional women, saluting them for helping to shape the direction of our region and improve the lives of others.

This year’s awards will highlight women in the following categories: Arts & Culture, Business & Industry, Civic & Community Service, Education, Entrepreneur, Health & Human Services, Professional Services, and Science & Technology. Besides these eight award categories, the YWCA has added a Young Leader award category this year to honor a young woman between 25 and 40 years of age who has demonstrated exceptional leadership early in her career. The addition of the Young Leader Award is consistent with the YWCA Board of Directors’ decision to create a Young Leaders Board last year. The nomination form for all categories is available online at www.ywcapgh.org.

The YWCA invites nominations from individuals, businesses, professional groups and community organizations. Selecting the winners is the responsibility of the YWCA’s 2012 Tribute to Women Event Committee, comprised of a diverse group of professionals representing the award categories.

Awards will be presented at the 30th annual Tribute to Women Leadership Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, May 16, at the Westin Hotel, 1000 Penn Avenue, downtown.
