“I’ve been lucky enough to [see] Vieux play twice this year…In the six months between the two shows, he has gone from strength to strength and eclipsed the show I saw at the beginning of the year. I will see him anytime I can now, and am looking forward to checking him whenever possible. His new album, Fondo, is so great, he has found his sound, his songwriting, singing and playing is just fantastic. Vieux is only going to get better and better.” --HENRY ROLLINS

“Vieux Farka Touré is forging his own identity, expanding on [traditional] drones and gnarled picking patters with a rocker’s joyful audacity. --THE NEW YORK TIMES

Often referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara”, Vieux Farka Toure was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Toure, who died in 2006. Ali Farka Touré came from a historical tribe of soldiers, and defied his parents in becoming a musician. When Vieux was in his teens, he declared that he also wanted to be a musician. His father disapproved due to the pressures he had experienced being a musician. Rather, he wanted Vieux to become a soldier. But with help from family friend the kora maestro Toumani Diabaté, Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to become a musician shortly before Ali passed.

Vieux was initially a drummer / calabash player at Mali’s Institut National des Arts, but secretly began playing guitar in 2001. Ali Farka Touré was weakened with cancer when Vieux announced that he was going to record an album. Ali recorded a couple of tracks with him, and these recordings, which can be heard on Vieux’s debut CD, were amongst his final ones. It has been said that the senior Touré played rough mixes of these songs when people visited him in his final days, at peace with, and proud of, his son’s talent as a musician.

In 2005, Eric Herman (still Vieux’s manager today) of Modiba Productions expressed an interest in producing an album for Vieux; this led to Vieux’s self-titled debut album, released by World Village in 2007. Ali Farka Touré’s work to tackle the problem of malaria is continued as 10% of proceeds are donated to Modiba’s “Fight Malaria” campaign in Niafunké through which over 3000 mosquito nets have been delivered to children and pregnant women in the Timbuktu region of Mali. On this first album, Vieux pays homage to his father and follows Ali’s musical tradition, giving new versions of the West African music that is echoed in the American blues. The album features Toumani Diabaté, as well as his late father. One of the tracks, ‘Courage’, is on the soundtrack of the film The First Grader (2010).

On his second record, Fondo on Six Degrees (2009), Vieux branched out and presented his own sound: while remaining true to the roots of his father’s music he uses elements of rock, Latin music, and other African influences. The album received a great deal of critical acclaim from across the globe, and Vieux was clearly moving out of his father’s shadow.

In June 2010, Vieux performed at the opening concert for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. That month Vieux also released his first live album, LIVE. His live performances are highly energized and Vieux is known for dazzling crowds with his speed and dexterity on the guitar, as well as his palpable charisma and luminous smile, both of which captivate audiences from all audiences in spite of any language barriers (though Vieux does speak 8 languages).

In 2011 Vieux released his 3rd studio album, The Secret, so named because the listener will hear the secret of the blues with a blend of generations from father to son. It was produced by guitarist Eric Krasno (of the Soulive trio) and features South African-born vocalist Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks on electric slide guitar and jazz guitarist John Scofield. The title track is the last collaboration between Vieux and his late father.
With the heralded release of The Secret, Vieux Farka Toure has clearly established himself as one of the world’s rare musical talents and guitar virtuosos with a distinct style that always pays homage to the past while looking towards the future.

In April 2012, Vieux released The Tel Aviv Session (Cumbancha), a collaborative project with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel dubbed ‘The Toure-Raichel Collective’ that has been hailed by fans and critics alike as a masterpiece and one of the best collaborative albums in the history of international music, drawing comparisons to Ali Farka Toure and Ry Cooder’s legendary Talking Timbuktu album. With each new project, Vieux expands his horizons, embraces new challenges and further entrenches his reputation as one of the world’s most talented and innovative musicians.http://www.vieuxfarkatoure.com/

Today's date: October 23, 2012

B.B. King, award winning, blues guitarist
performing at the  Benedum Center, Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.

Pittsburgh, PA:  The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents award-winning, blues guitarist B.B. King at the Benedum Center on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.  For information and tickets: visit www.Trustarts.org, call (412) 456-6666, or in person: Theater Square Box Office, 655 Penn Avenue.  To purchase 10 or more tickets at discounted rates, please call (412) 471-6930.  The performance is a part of the Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

Riley B. King, better known as B.B. King, has been enthralling audiences for more than fifty years.  Growing up in the Mississippi Delta, King played on street corners for dimes and would sometimes play up to four towns in a night.  His passion for music led him to Memphis, Tennessee where he got his big break performing on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM. This led to steady engagements at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis, and later to a ten-minute spot on Memphis radio station WDIA. "King's Spot," became so popular, it was expanded and became the "Sepia Swing Club."

In 1952, King had his first hit with “Three O’Clock Blues” which was followed by countless more.   Over the years B.B. King has performed an estimated 15,000 shows and is one the most beloved blues musicians of all time.  Known as the King of the Blues, he is credited with inventing the genre of the blues.  President Obama recently declared at a B.B. King performance, "This music speaks to something universal. No one goes through life without both- joy and pain, triumph and sorrow. The blues gets all of that, sometimes with just one lyric or one note. "

King named his famous guitar Lucille after narrowly escaping a fire in a dance hall caused by two men fighting over a woman named Lucille.  The beloved Gibson guitar has become an essential part of his identifiable guitar style.  Borrowing from Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, King integrated his precise and complex vocal-like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of rock guitarist's vocabulary.  King has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a totally unique sound. In King’s words, "When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille."

King released his 24th studio album, One Kind of Favor, in August, 2008.  It went on to win a Grammy award for Best Traditional Blues Album at the 51st Grammy Awards.  He also contributed to Cyndi Lauper's album Memphis Blues in 2010.  He continues to tour playing many of his hit songs from over the years.

King has received many accolades and awards throughout his career.  In 1984 he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.  That same year he received NARAS' Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.  King also holds honorary doctorates from Tougaloo (MS) College in 1973; Yale University in 1977; Berklee College of Music in 1982; Rhodes College of Memphis in 1990; Mississippi Valley State University in 2002 and Brown University in 2007. In 1992, he received the National Award of Distinction from the University of Mississippi.  He continues to tour extensively and his classic hits such as "Payin' The Cost to be the Boss," "The Thrill is Gone," How Blue Can You Get," "Everyday I Have The Blues," and "Why I Sing The Blues" continue to thrill audiences today.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Steve Litman present An All-Star Guitar Tribute to the Legendary Jimi Hendrix

Experience Hendrix

Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at 7:30 p.m.
Benedum Center

Pittsburgh, PA: Have you experienced Hendrix? Experience Hendrix offers a rare opportunity to hear Jimi Hendrix’ timeless canon of work exquisitely performed live by some of the world’s most talented guitarists.

Billy Cox (former bassist, The Jimi Hendrix Experience), Steve Vai, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas (Los Lobos), Chris Layton (Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Double Trouble), Living Color, Ernie Isley (The Isley Brothers), Brad Whitford (Aerosmith) and other guitar greats share the Benedum stage for an electrifying celebration of Jimi Hendrix’ music and legacy on Tuesday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m.

The Experience Hendrix tour has thrilled sold-out audiences across North America and visits Pittsburgh for the very first time as part of a series of added U.S. dates. Experience Hendrix will have local Hendrix fans of all ages “floatin” with one guitar masterpiece performed after another. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix's unparalleled creative and musical influence, Experience Hendrix, L.L.C.--the company formed by the late guitarist's father, James "Al" Hendrix to oversee his legendary son's legacy--has continued that innovative spirit with its ongoing series of all-star tribute concerts held in honor of the late great musician. Visit experiencehendrixtour.com to learn about Experience Hendrix.

In terms of format, the tour offers multiple opportunities for performers and audiences to witness unique collaborations such as Steve Vai performing with Living Colour, as well as the tour’s artists performing their favorite Hendrix signature songs including “Little Wing,” “Fire,” “Purple Haze,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “Crosstown Traffic” and many others. As has been the case with previous Experience Hendrix outings, special guests are expected to sit in at many of the dates, making the concerts all that much more memorable for both new and veteran Hendrix fans. Past special guests have included Paul Rodgers, Joe Satriani, Hubert Sumlin, Buddy Guy, Carlos Santana, Robby Krieger and others.

Anchoring the tour is Billy Cox, the legendary bassist whose relationship with Jim Hendrix and his music dates back to the early 1960s when the two met while serving in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division. The two bonded over their love of music and would later work together backing R&B acts on the “chitlin’ circuit.” They reunited when Cox was recruited to be part of the Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsys as well as the ultimate iteration of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, performing at such landmark festivals as Woodstock and the Isle of Wight. Cox, who has been part of all previous Experience Hendrix tours, notes, "It's always a great thrill and honor for me to play Jimi's music for audiences now just as it was in the 1960s. The Experience Hendrix tours have shown how timeless this music really is and how wonderful it is that we’ve continued to get an infusion of new, very enthusiastic artists to participate and are able to offer the most wide-ranging Jimi Hendrix-related repertoire possible."

Tickets ($60 & $75) for Experience Hendrix at the Benedum Center may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at pgharts.org or by calling (412) 456-6666. To purchase 10 or more tickets at special discounted rates, please call (412) 471-6930. ,
