DOLLAR BANK THREE RIVERS ARTS FESTIVAL ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES

Riverlights Request for Proposals - NEW!
As announced last month, Riverlife, Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) are planning the grand reopening and dedication of the Point State Park fountain on Friday, June 7, 2013. The reopening celebration, called “Riverlights at The Point,” commemorates the conclusion of the $35-million renovation of Point State Park overseen by DCNR, Riverlife and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. Coinciding with the first night of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, “Riverlights at The Point” is free, open to the public and will include a dedication ceremony, musical entertainment and a special lighting installation throughout the park. Attendees will see the fountain turned back on for the first time since it was shut off for reconstruction in April 2009. The “Riverlights at The Point” celebration is made possible by generous funding from Colcom Foundation.

Local artists, lighting designers, students and architects are invited to submit proposals to develop and implement a temporary artistic lighting concept for Point State Park to be showcased during the fountain grand reopening. Entrants have until February 15, 2013, to submit proposals. The lighting concept RFP and details about “Riverlights at The Point” are available at www.pointstatepark.com.

Performing Arts Series - NEW!
To further performance opportunities for local and regional artists, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust extends an invitation to musicians, dancers, actors, literary and performance artists to submit work and proposals. The Performing Arts open call period will end on Friday, February 15, 2013. Artist Market
Each year, hundreds of artists from around the country apply to display and sell their original, handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces of art at Pittsburgh’s most celebrated show.  Artists are selected through a rigorous jury process in a wide variety of media, from jewelry to painting, woodworking to photography. The Festival awards up to $10,000 to artists and is ranked among the top 40 shows in the United States by Sunshine Artist Magazine. Application fees are $35 per medium, and booth fees range from $340-$410. The deadline to apply is February 10, and all applications are being accepted through Zapplication.org.

Juried Visual Art Exhibition
The Juried Visual Art Exhibition showcases the Pittsburgh region’s vibrant creative community and serves as another pillar of the Festival’s quality artistic offerings.  The exhibition is hosted inside the Trust Arts Education Center (Jim E. Rohr Building) at 805-807 Liberty Avenue in the Cultural District during each day of the Festival. All works are juried by a panel of Pittsburgh-based artists and curators.  Decisions are based solely on aesthetic quality as determined by the jury panel in an anonymous jury process. Awards include Best In Show ($2,500) as selected by all three jurors; three Juror’s Choice Awards ($500 each); and new this year, the People’s Choice Award as voted by the general public ($500 and an opportunity to show new work at the 2014 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival). Deadline to apply is February 10 through CallforEntry.org.

The Emerging Artist Scholarship Program helps Pittsburgh-region artists produce their first booth in an outdoor show.  Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival’s Emerging Artists Scholarship Program has become the model for others like it in Artists Markets throughout the nation and has launched the art careers of dozens of Pittsburgh-based artists. The scholarship provides a tent and booth space in the Artists Market at no charge.  Recipients of the scholarship are also paired with mentors – established artists working in the same medium who can answer questions about exhibiting and offer advice on maximizing sales, designing your booth and pricing your art. A limited number of scholarships are available for this competitive program. Entry is open to  any artist who has never done an outdoor show and lives within 100 miles of Pittsburgh. Squonk Opera Celebrates 20 Years of Squonking

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Squonk Opera celebrates 20 years of Squonking

Performances take place at Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival - June 8, 9 and 10

Pittsburgh, PA: In celebration of 20 years of creating and performing original multimedia works in and from Pittsburgh, Squonk Opera will be doing 20 free shows all around Pittsburgh this summer, more local shows than they’ve ever done in a season.  They will premiere this next creation – GO Roadshow– at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival with shows on June 8, 9 and 10.

GO Roadshowwill be a free street spectacle aboard a 34-foot long monster truck. This show-making machine will be retrofitted with truck-horn calliope, a wall made of rotors and a spinning grand piano that is played while it wheels around!  Each show will start with a shameless parade of peacock trumpets, spinning drums, accordion, sousaphone and glockenspiel.

“GO is a music and art-mobile - a rolling ruckus that opens up like a mechanical blossom to make the street a vibrant place where people can share a community of the imagination,” says Co-Artistic Director and composer Jackie Dempsey. Night shows will include video projected on a rotor screen made of movement itself, and on a blimp that will have a mouth that opens in a call to celebration.  “We are drawing from the great American history of traveling circuses, Shriner and holiday parades, medicine shows, and used car lot events that vitalized the heartland of this country,” says Co-Artistic Director and chief designer Steve O’Hearn.

Squonk Opera hails from Pittsburgh, has toured the world and played on and off Broadway.  They are celebrating their 20th anniversary of creating completely original work from Pittsburgh: no scripts from LA, or design from New York or music from London.  Squonk is just Pittsburghers making their own art and music.  And now, they are taking it to the street.

GO Roadshowhas been generously funded by Fisher Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Anonymous Donor, The Heinz Endowments, EQT Corporation, Henry C. Frick Educational Fund of the Buhl Foundation, Hillman Foundation, The Grable Foundation, The Fine Foundation and the PA Council on the Arts.  Commissioners include Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and many generous individual donors.

For more information, go to our website at http://www.squonkopera.org/
Final rehearsals will be held on Thursday, May 31 and Friday, August 1 from 2 to 10 pm at the Squonk Farm in Tarentum, PA.  If you would like details so you can stop by to chat or take photos, email Jackie Dempsey (contact info below).

The 2012 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival highlights include the return of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, a new multimedia show by Squonk Opera, the premiere of Bluegrass Day on June 9th, and expansion of the Artist Market and greening initiatives.

The opening weekend of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival will be enriched by the 2nd annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival (June 1-3), which is produced by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.  The indoor/outdoor jazz festival helps kick-off a 10-day celebration of the arts in Pittsburgh.  More information is available at PittsburghJazzLive.com.

“For over half a century, Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival has evolved but has remained true to its mission to bring the arts to the community and the community to the arts,” states J. Kevin McMahon, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. “Along with the return of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, this year we are thrilled to bookend the ten day celebration with two uniquely American musical legacies. Hundreds of jazz musicians will perform as part of the Trust’s Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival on opening weekend and the all-new Bluegrass Day on June 9 will be part of the closing weekend festivities. It is a testament to community partners, especially presenting sponsor Dollar Bank, that all of this diverse programming is possible.”

“Dollar Bank is pleased to continue a long tradition of providing community events in downtown Pittsburgh,” said Joseph B. Smith, Senior Vice President Marketing, Dollar Bank. “We are especially delighted that the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will be returning this year.  Music Director Manfred Honeck will once again showcase world-renowned talent to the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival crowd.”  The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra show is made possible with generous support from concert sponsor, People’s Natural Gas.

The most current Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival 2012 schedule of attractions is available at www.3riversartsfest.org.

This year’s enhancements and attractions include:

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is proud to continue producing the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival with sustainable environmental practices, which have earned the Festival a GOLD level accreditation with Pennsylvania Resources Council’s Zero Waste Pittsburgh initiative.  Generous support from Colcom Foundation allows the Festival to continue leading practices like a world-class composting and recycling system – one of the first and largest in the nation, which helps divert more than 80% of trash from landfills annually – and efforts like free bicycle valet service and water stations that encourage refilling personal containers.

3Rs:  The Art of Reuse, Recycle, and Repurpose
Demonstrating the convergence of art and sustainability, this project challenges artists to reimagine waste management receptacles as canvases for reclaimed materials used in an artistic way.  The originality and boldness of the designs attract visitors; once there, the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival’s "Green Team" on-site educators explain the benefits of recycling and composting, allowing the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival to continue diverting more than 80% of potential waste from landfills.  The reimagined receptacles are placed throughout the event’s footprint in Point State Park, the Cultural District, and Hertz Gateway Center and are made possible with support from Laurel Foundation.

Paddle Without Pollution
Paddle Without Pollution partners with Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival on Saturday, June 9thfor a special clean-up event of Pittsburgh’s three rivers near Point State Park.  Paddle Without Pollution’s watershed stewardship initiative addresses the litter and other debris that degrades the rivers, streams, and lakes of Southwestern Pennsylvania. PWP’s innovative approach – utilizing kayaks, canoes, and non-motorized boats to reach otherwise unreachable debris while being sensitive to the environment – will remove 5 to 10 tons of garbage from local rivers, lakes, and streams in 2012. Anyone interested in participating in the clean-up efforts on Saturday, June 9thshould register at PaddleWithoutPollution.com/events.

VISUAL ARTS

Artists Market
This year’s Artists Market footprint is expanded in order to provide opportunity for more than 300 artists to participate and to enhance the experience for visitors.  In recent years, Point State Park played host to Artists Market booths only on weekends; now, the Park hosts more total artist booths and does so during all ten days of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival.  Booths are also added along Penn Avenue extension near Hertz Gateway Center.  Changes within the Hertz Gateway Center plaza area increase free space to create a safer and more comfortable browsing space, with a large number of booths remaining.
The Artists Market is one of Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival’s cornerstones and is among the most-anticipated attractions every year.  It is comprised of artists carefully selected by a distinguished review panel and presents completely handmade work available for public purchase.  The 2012 Artists Market received more artist applications than any year in the event’s history.  The review panel comprised Jill Larson, Founder of FE Gallery; Artist and Curator Rick Bach; and Ellen Fleurov, Director, Silver Eye Gallery.

Juried Visual Art Exhibition
The annual Juried Visual Art Exhibition, held at 805-807 Liberty Avenue in the Trust Arts Education Center (James E. Rohr Building) is expanded as well, making room for 79 total accepted pieces.  Several large scale three dimensional works allow the show to flow between the building’s 3rd and 4th floors.  The Juried Visual Art Exhibition is curated by moxideDada.  Jurors include Linda Benedict-Jones, Curator of Photography, Carnegie Museum of Art; Murray Horne, Curator, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust; and Michael Olyjnik, Co-Director, Mattress Factory.

ACTIVITIES

Gateway to the Arts
In addition to artist demonstrations and hands-on activities available annually at the Festival, Gateway to the Arts presents comprehensive weekend attractions for the first time at three separate tents in the Giant Eagle Creativity Zone.  The “Main Stage,” “StoryTime Tent,” and “ArtMaking Tent” offer educational shows for all ages ranging from culturally-diverse music performances to story-telling to collaborative painting projects.

PERFORMING ARTS

Squonk Opera
Pittsburgh native Squonk Opera returns to perform an all new multimedia show on June 8, 9, and 10.  Celebrating 20 years since their first show; which featured choreographed cranes, roaring earth-movers, and screaming machine shears in a Pittsburgh junkyard; the ensemble of musicians and artists presents a live music and multimedia theatrical spectacle on the back of a flat-bed truck near Stanwix Street.

Bluegrass Day
The premier of Bluegrass Day at Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, slated for June 9th, is made possible with generous support from Colcom Foundation.  A trio of distinguished bluegrass bands – Del McCoury Band, Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, and Greensky Bluegrass – lead the celebration of the American music genre.  Regional and local bluegrass musicians join the effort on Second Stage in Hertz Gateway Center.

Colcom Foundation’s support also allows the bluegrass element of Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival to extend beyond June 9th.  A series of free bluegrass concerts will take place in Agnes R. Katz Plaza throughout the summer, to be announced later, produced by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Announces Music Headliners For 10-Day Festival

Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival
June 1-10, 2012 – Point State Park | Cultural District | Hertz Gateway Center

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust proudly announces headline music concerts for the 2012 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, June 1 – 10. All concerts are free to the public and take place on the Dollar Bank Stage in Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh. The line-up of musicians represents just one facet of the multi-disciplinary Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, which celebrates its 53rd year in downtown Pittsburgh this summer. Additional daily music acts will be announced in the coming weeks, along with other Festival attractions.

J. Kevin McMahon, President and CEO of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, notes, “The music lineup at this year’s Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival upholds the Festival’s mission of connecting the community to the arts – and does so by offering 10 days of celebrated musicians who span a wide range of genres. We thank our lead sponsor, Dollar Bank, for making this diverse programming possible and we look forward to announcing more Festival highlights in the coming weeks.”

“Dollar Bank is pleased to continue a long tradition of providing community events in Point State Park,” said Joseph B. Smith, Senior Vice President Marketing, Dollar Bank. “We are especially delighted that the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will be returning this year. Music Director Manfred Honeck will once again showcase world-renowned talent to the Festival crowd.”

“The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to return to perform at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival,” said PSO President and CEO James A. Wilkinson. “Our concert at Point State Park last year was a tremendous success, and it is an honor to perform at one of the most popular and most anticipated cultural festivals in the country.”

This year’s lineup also features the premier of Bluegrass Day, set for Saturday, June 9th, during which three distinguished bands will celebrate the uniquely-American tradition and ever-evolving genre on the Dollar Bank Stage. Regional and local bluegrass musicians will join the effort on a secondary stage with other activities being planned.

All headline concerts on the Dollar Bank Stage begin at 7:30 p.m. in Point State Park with the exception of the Sunday performances, which begin at 6:00 p.m. Exact schedule times will be announced in May along with information on the Artists Market, visual arts, family programming, other performing arts, and more music programming. Visit 3riversartsfest.org or call 412-456-6666 for more information.

The headline concerts will be augmented by additional live music on opening weekend, June 1 – 3, as musicians perform on three stages positioned on the streets of the Cultural District at the 2nd annual Pittsburgh International JazzLive Festival, a 3-day event produced in cooperation with the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. More information is available at PittsburghJazzLive.com.

Friday, June 1st – The Wailers
Together with Bob Marley, the Wailers have sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide. Outside of their groundbreaking work with Marley, the Wailers have also played or performed with international acts like Sting, the Fugees, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, and Alpha Blondy, as well as reggae legends such as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear. As the greatest living exponents of Jamaica’s reggae tradition, the Wailers have played to an estimated 24 million people across the globe.

Saturday, June 2nd – Kathleen Edwards
On tour supporting her album,
Voyageur, Kathleen Edwards continues to receive critical praise for her music. The New York Times said her work “…embodies an evolving idea about what roots music can be,” while Entertainment Weekly said her recent efforts channel “…gorgeously weathered heartbreak, straight from the gravelliest Ontario roads.”

Sunday, June 3rd – Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra provides musical experiences at the highest level of expression to enrich the community and to satisfy the needs and preferences of its audiences. Last year, the PSO performed to a crowd of 15,000 at Point State Park. It was the orchestra’s first performance at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival since 1977.

Tuesday, June 5th – Dawes
A self-described “American rock ‘n’ roll band,” Dawes represents everything pure and true about that fundamental delineation – four talented friends making music together, fueled by a shared belief in the power of their songs. The Los Angeles-based band offers a blend of singer/songwriter reflection with folk, country, ringing guitars, soaring harmonies, and heartfelt melodies. Constant touring and collaboration with some of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest artists has translated to staggering growth and evolution while still manifesting a distinctive, unforgettable voice.

Friday, June 8th – Carolina Chocolate Drops
The GRAMMY Award winning trio has proven that the old-time, fiddle and banjo-based music they have so scrupulously researched and passionately perform can be a living, breathing, ever-evolving sound. Starting with material culled from the Piedmont region of the Carolinas, they pursue fresh interpretation, not merely recreation, of the work, highlighting the central role African-Americans played in shaping our nation’s popular music from its beginnings more than a century ago. The virtuosic trio’s approach is provocative and revelatory.

Saturday, June 9th – “Bluegrass Day” featuring:

Del McCoury Band
For fifty years, Del McCoury’s music has defined authenticity for bluegrass fans and a growing number of fans only vaguely familiar with the genre. McCoury is a living link to the days when bluegrass was made only in hillbilly honkytonks, schoolhouse shows, and on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. Yet he and his band, including sons Ronnie and Robbie, remain a commandingly vital presence today. Americana music icon Richard Thompson, who saw his
1952 Vincent Black Lightning turn into a bluegrass standard when McCoury brought it into the fold, has said, "I think that's the best bluegrass band, period. That's it."

Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band
A GRAMMY Award winner and six-time nominee, Peter Rowan is a bluegrass singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades. From his early years playing under the tutelage of bluegrass patriarch Bill Monroe to his stint in Old & In the Way with Jerry Garcia and his subsequent breakout as both a solo performer and bandleader, Rowan has built a devoted, international fan base through his continuous stream of original recordings, collaborative projects, and constant touring.

Greensky Bluegrass
Defining bluegrass for a new generation, this hard-working Michigan quintet has been performing upwards of 175 shows per year for 11 years all across America. The band is unquestionably a team of friends traversing the country making music they enjoy. Jambase.com has said, “Greensky Bluegrasshits timeless targets with deadly accuracy while simultaneously veering off the tried and true highway.”

Sunday, June 10th – Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers
Twenty five years after winning a Best New Artist GRAMMY Award and launching one of contemporary music’s most diverse and collaborative careers, Bruce Hornsby is still, blissfully, making joyful noise—and finding clever, expansive ways to chronicle the dynamic musical snapshots along the journey. Superstar collaborations and more than 100 records speak volumes about Hornsby’s unique fusion of mainstream appeal and wild musical diversity. “In the spirit of musical evolution, I’m always trying to keep my band on their toes,” Hornsby says. “I think the guys in the Noisemakers like the gig because there’s never a dull moment and we attempt to keep the spontaneity factor high.”

James Grashow: Corrugated Fountain

June 3 – July 2, 2011

709 Penn Gallery

709 Penn Avenue at Seventh Street

Downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District

PITTSBURGH, PA: Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, a program of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, presents the epic sculptural installation Corrugated Fountain by East Coast artist James Grashow at the Trust’s 709 Penn Gallery. James Grashow’s ambitious, large-scale work recalls the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Steeped in classical mythology, the room-sized installation fills 709 penn Gallery with a mammoth sculpture of Neptune, Tritons, rocks, waves, fish and dolphins. As homage to the achievements of classical and baroque artistry, Grashow uses his signature cardboard material to breathe playful new light into old stone. Three years in the making, Corrugated Fountain is James Grashow’s most ambitious work to date.

About James Grashow

James Grashow is a renowned sculptor and woodcut printer. Born in Brooklyn, Grashow studied at the Pratt Institute, where he received his BA and MFA in painting and sculpture. Growing up as son of a light industrialist, Grashow had access to a constant supply of cardboard as a child and discovered early on his facility with this medium. From intricate cardboard and twist-tie birds to the delicate and colorful Houseplant series, in which buildings seem to grow from blossoming wood and paper flowers, the artist’s varied oeuvre is marked by a contagious sense of humor and a longtime fascination with quotidian materials.
