Pittsburgh Pa, March 11, 2013 - In collaboration with BNY Mellon, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will commemorate National Jazz Appreciation Month with Grammy Award winners, renowned musicians and iconic jazz masters this April 2013.  Janis Burley-Wilson, Vice President of Education and Community Engagement/Jazz Programs is extremely excited about bringing these acts to Pittsburgh. “All of the artists that are featured this year dig down deep into their musical souls to create their own inimitable sound.” She added, “We are proud to have these artists take the Cabaret Theater stage this April.”

Lou Donaldson was named as a National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master for 2013. He is a Bebop Alto-Saxophone titan and has played professionally for over six decades. “Sweet Papa Lou,” has recorded and performed with Art Blakey, Miles Davis and Theolonious Monk just to name a few.

Kenny Garrett is a Grammy Award winning American post-bop jazz saxophonist and flautist who gained fame in his youth as a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and  Miles Davis' band. He has also recorded or performed with Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and McCoy Tyner.

Nicholas Payton is a Grammy Award winning Trumpeter from New Orleans Louisiana. Known for his prowess on the Fender Rhodes piano as well, Payton recently released “#BAM Live at Bohemian Caverns.”

Veteran soul singer, Bettye LaVette, brings her caustic survivors wit to every performance. She has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and her latest CD is titled “Thankful N Thoughtful”.

Sean Jones and Friends finish the month long celebration with their popular Jazz meets Funk repertoire.  Funk and jazz drummer, Poogie Bell has played with Marcus Miller, Jill Scott and more, and is celebrated as one of the best funk drummers in the world. Sean Jones is a trumpeter, composer and educator. He was formerly the lead horn player with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Jones is currently a professor of Jazz Studies at Duquesne University and has eight critically acclaimed jazz albums to his credit.

Pittsburgh, Pa: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and BNY Mellon JazzLive series present the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra “On the Road” at the Cabaret at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh, on Tuesday, October 2. at  8:00 p.m.  Tickets ($20) are on sale at the Theater Square Box Office, 655 Penn Avenue, by phone at 412-456-6666, and online at trustarts.org. Bank of New York Mellon, the New Pittsburgh Courier, and Pittsburgh Jazz Society are sponsors the JazzLive series.

This season, the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra will be "on the road," performing at a variety of venues around the Pittsburgh area. The Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, led by Artistic Director, Sean Jones, will be comprised of a slightly different configuration than the usual big band. Jones says, “this season it’s time for PJO to spread its wings and share America’s indigenous art form throughout the region.” The band will also perform original compositions by Associate Artistic Director, Mike Tomaro.

Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President and Director of Jazz Programs with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, comments, “The Cultural Trust has become the largest supporter of local jazz musicians in the region through our weekly JazzLive series, as well as special engagements and educational programs. We are thrilled that the PJO decided to make their first stop “on the road” at the Cabaret Theater”.

In addition to performing in the Cabaret, the PJO have developed a musical component, with artist educator, Alison Babusci, for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s PNC Grow Up Great Arts Program. The activities are geared towards preschoolers, and will serve the students that attend the downtown Pittsburgh daycare centers. Complete with multicolored kazoos, the children will “Jam” with the band on Tuesday, October 9 in the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Education Center, 805-807 Liberty Avenue, and again for a special Holiday Junior Jam Session.

DJ Nate Da Phat Barber gets the outdoor party started at 5:30 p.m. Then, the Occidental Brothers Dance Band International will play their renowned brand of Soukous, Ghanaian Highlife and African dance music in Pittsburgh for the first time, from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. Hailing out of Chicago, OBDBI's high-energy Afrobeat rhythms have made them favorites of music critics and devotees around the world. Their music conjures thoughts of the golden age of African guitar bands of the 1970’s and 80’s.  After the Crawl, Nate Da Phat will come back to the turntables for a unique jam with special guest, Sean Jones.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust celebrates city's rich jazz legacy with second annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival

June 1-3, 2012 - Pittsburgh's Cultural District

The second annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival (PJLIF) returns to downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District on Friday, June 1, through Sunday, June 3, 2012, for an expanded weekend of music, art and celebration. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust produces this annual event to celebrate Pittsburgh’s jazz legacy in cooperation with the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. The event features a JazzLive Crawl in 30 downtown venues on Friday; three outdoor stages on Saturday and Sunday; a lineup of regional, national and internationally acclaimed musicians; and on Sunday a visual art show dedicated to the African and African American diaspora.

“The overarching theme of programming of this year’s festival is ‘family,’” says Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President and Director of Jazz Programs for The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. “Jazz appreciation is passed down through the generations. Pittsburgh has families of musicians who have been trailblazers in jazz and who carry on the deep tradition and respect for the music. There will be a number of families performing in this festival: brothers, sisters, children of important jazz figures in Pittsburgh.”

In total over 240 artists, including 140 local musicians, will perform at the Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival in downtown restaurants, coffee shops, and galleries and on three large outdoor stages along the Penn Avenue corridor. Featured PJLIF musicians include: Monty Alexander, Poogie Bell, The Clayton Brothers, Fort Apache with Andy & Jerry Gonzalez, Robert Glasper, Alan Harris, Lalah Hathaway, Sean Jones, Soul Cycle, Jeff “Tain” Watts and The Average White Band among many others.

There is no admission to attend the performances at the outdoor stages. Seating in restaurants, however, during the Jazzlive Crawl on Friday, June 1, is only available for dining patrons. On Saturday, June 2, Sean Jones, who was named artist-in-residence for the new initiative Sound & Spirit, will debut a new commissioned piece. Central to the Sound & Spirit program are community and school workshops with residents who contribute to the writing and composition process; the program’s goal is to create music truly inspired by the people of the City of Pittsburgh.

Afro-American Music Institute Celebrates 28th Anniversary

Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents “shades of love,” a special BNY Mellon JazzLive exclusive the weekend before Valentine’s Day, featuring the music of jazz star, Sean Jones. On Saturday, February 12, 2011, at 10 p.m. Mr. Jones, along with his New York Quintet, will perform songs from the soon-to-be-released CD, No Need for Words, at the Cabaret at Theater Square. A second show, For Lovers Only: A Celebration of the Love Song, will be held at 11:30 p.m. Mr. Jones notes, “From the most euphoric feeling, to the heart wrenching agony of loneliness, this music will take you on a journey through the various hues and tones of love.”

Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President for Education and Director of Jazz Programs at the Trust, says, “Anticipation is high for the new album, No Need for Words, and we are excited to be able to give the Pittsburgh jazz audiences an opportunity to hear this beautiful music before the rest of the world.”

Sean Jones has established a reputation as one of the finest jazz trumpet players in the world, touring with his own band, as lead trumpeter with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, with the Marcus Miller band, and numerous other groups, all over the world. He also resurrected the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra in 2009. He is considered by his fellow musicians, and critics, to be the “heir apparent” to the jazz legacy left by greats like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown and Freddie Hubbard. Jones New York quintet includes Louis Cato on drums, Orrin Evans on piano, Luques Curtis on bass, and Brian Hogans on saxophone.

The band is made up of a group of young superstars in their own right. Louis Cato has played with Marcus Miller, Phillip Bailey, Mos Def, Q-tip, and attended Berkeley School of Music. Orrin Evans has 12 albums, has been named the Philadelphia Ambasador for the Arts, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Solo. Luques Curtis plays with Latin jazz legend, Eddie Palmieri, and just released his first album as a leader. Brian Hogans plays with Russell Gun, and has played with Sean Jones for four years. A multi-instrumentalist, Hogans plays sax, drums, and piano.
