Pittsburgh, PA:  Back by popular demand, THE BOOK OF MORMON, which played a record breaking two week run in 2013, returns for a limited engagement.  The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces that single tickets will go on sale Thursday, July 17, 2014, at 9:00 a.m for the Pittsburgh engagement of THE BOOK OF MORMON at Heinz Hall, September 23-October 5, 2014.

THE BOOK OF MORMON features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. Parker and Stone are the four-time Emmy Award-winning creators of the landmark animated series, “South Park.” Tony Award-winner Lopez is co-creator of the long-running hit musical comedy, Avenue Q.  The musical is choreographed by Tony Award-winner Casey Nicholaw (Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone) and is directed by Nicholaw and Parker.

THE BOOK OF MORMON is the winner of nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score (Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, Matt Stone), Best Book (Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, Matt Stone), Best Direction (Casey Nicholaw, Trey Parker), Best Featured Actress (Nikki M. PITTSBURGH, PA:  Gregory Porter has won his first Grammy® Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album Liquid Spirit.  Porter’s award was announced at the 56th Annual Grammy® Awards held on Sunday, January 26, 2014 in Los Angeles.

Gregory Porter, who has been deemed as a disarmingly sincere jazz and R& B performer with a groove that never quits, possesses a voice of incredible virtuosity and a seemingly universal appeal as a songwriter.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Raised in California, Porter’s mother was a minister, and he cites the Bakersfield Southern Gospel sound, as well as his mother’s Nat King Cole record collection, as fundamental influences on his own sound. Porter began singing in small jazz clubs in San Diego while attending San Diego State University on a football scholarship, where he played outside linebacker. Eventually it was music that Porter chose to pursue full-time at the encouragement of local musicians including his mentor Kamau Kenyatta.

Kenyatta invited Porter to visit him in the studio in Los Angeles, where he was producing the flutist Hubert Laws’ album Remembers the Unforgettable Nat King Cole. When Laws overheard Porter singing along while he was tracking the Charlie Chaplin song “Smile,” the flutist was so impressed with the young singer that he decided to include Porter on the album.

Another fortunate twist of fate was the presence in the studio that day of Laws’ sister, Eloise, a singer who was soon to join the cast of a new musical theater production It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues. Porter had minimal theatrical experience but was cast in one of the show’s lead roles when the play opened in Denver, and he eventually followed it to Off-Broadway and then Broadway, where The New York Times, in its 1999 rave review, mentioned Porter among the show’s “powerhouse line up of singers.” It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues went on to earn both Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations that year.

Porter eventually put down roots in Brooklyn, and in 2010 released his debut album Water (Motéma Music), which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. His sophomore album Be Good (Motéma Music) followed in 2012 and earned him his second GRAMMY nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

In February of this year, Soweto Gospel Choir will launch their fifth major North American tour.  Visiting over 30 cities across the U.S. during the upcoming three months, Soweto Gospel Choir’s concerts will celebrate their musical heritage that reflects the color and vibrancy of their rainbow nation and honor the life and legacy of their late President and friend, Nelson Mandela.

Soweto Gospel Choir is managed under the guidance of Executive Producer and Director Beverly Bryer and Company Manager Jimmy Mashudu Mulovhedzi.  Since its formation in 2002, Soweto Gospel Choir has captivated audiences around the globe with their glorious harmonies and uniquely blended voices and is dedicated to sharing the joy of faith through music. Soweto Gospel Choir is also committed to philanthropic work.  In 2003, the group founded its own AIDS orphan foundation, Nkosi’s Haven Vukani.  Soweto Gospel Choir has received numerous accolades and awards from around the globe.  “These absolutely thrilling singers need nothing but their voices to make dazzling music.” – Billboard

The two-time Grammy Award-winning Choir releases their fifth album, Divine Decade (Decca, 1/28/14), a celebration of the ensemble’s past ten years of artistic collaborations and accolades.  The result of these magnetic musical partnerships is a recording which showcases the wonderful diversity of the group’s style as a gospel choir that sings across all genres of music. Opening with an address from the Choir’s Patron, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Divine Decade features collaborations with a wide range of guest artists that exhibit the Choir’s breadth of repertoire, including: U2, Robert Plant, The Soil, Joepraize, Zahara, Elvis Blue, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Solly Mahlangu, Corlea Botha, Eric Wainaina, Johnny Clegg, Paul Ruske, and HHP. Beverly Bryer has been involved in the entertainment industry for over 25 years, working with some of South Africa's premier recording artists before moving on to become Managing Director of one of the country's most successful music publishing companies. In August 2002 Beverly formed her own company, Eventsco, and was approached by Australian producers/promoters Andrew Kay, Clifford Hocking and David Vigo, to form an African gospel choir, now known as the Soweto Gospel Choir. Her position as Executive Producer/Director incorporates the producing, directing, management, marketing and publicizing of the choir in South Africa in association with the Australian producers.

Jimmy Mashudu Mulovhedzi was born and raised in Soweto South Africa.   He is the son of Soweto Gospel Choir's co-founder, the late David Mulovhedzi. Jimmy started singing in his father's church choir, the Holy Jerusalem Choir at age 13. Under his father's guidance, he has become a song writer, arranger, producer and choreographer.  Jimmy has collaborated with many artists and songwriters including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Benjamin Dube, the late American Gospel icon Rev. James Cleveland, and The Mighty Clouds of Joy.   Since 2009, Mulovhedzi has been the choir’s company manager, following in his father’s legacy.  Apart from music Jimmy is a qualified, I.T. administrator, Industrial Psychologist and a certified HIV/AIDS Counselor. He is also the director of Edzimkulu, a non-government organization which runs a successful AIDS project in South Africa. Known for his soulful voice and poignant lyrics, timeless style and charm, this concert will be an unforgettable evening with Bolton and his iconic voice. The performance features orchestral holiday favorites and Bolton’s classic hits, such as “When a Man Loves a Woman,” “Time, Love and Tenderness,” “How Can We be Lovers,” “Soul Provider” and many more!

Michael Bolton, the multiple Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and social activist, who has sold more than 53 million albums and singles worldwide, continues to tour the world every year, all while writing, recording and taping for a wide array of projects spanning music, film, television and theater. Bolton has won two Grammys for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance (nominated four times), six American Music Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As a songwriter, he has earned more than 24 BMI & ASCAP Awards, including Songwriter of the Year, nine Million-Air Awards and the Hitmakers Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Bolton has recorded and performed with musical icons that have inspired and influenced his own career—including Luciano Pavarotti, Ray Charles and Seal, among others—and collaborated with some of the greatest songwriters and producers of our time—including Lady Gaga, David Foster, John “Mutt” Lange and Billy Mann, among others. For his dedication to social activism, Bolton has been honored with several Humanitarian awards—including the Martin Luther King Award granted by the Congress of Racial Equality (C.O.R.E.), the Lewis Hine Award from The National Child Labor Committee, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations and the Frances Preston Lifetime Achievement Award. Fawzi Haimor is in his second season in the position of assistant conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Prior to his Pittsburgh appointment, he was the assistant conductor of the Alabama Symphony for two seasons. In Pittsburgh, he conducts a variety of concerts including subscription, pops, education and outreach. Haimor also has worked with the Jacksonville Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Amman Symphony in the Middle East and, in Europe, Orquestra Sinfonico do Porto. He has also served as a cover conductor to esteemed conductors including Manfred Honeck, Leonard Slatkin, Gianandrea Noseda, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Yan Pascal Tortelier. In the current season, his guest engagements include the Erie Chamber Orchestra and a return to Alabama and Jacksonville Symphony Orchestras, as a guest artist.

Passionate about the education of young musicians, Haimor was the first music director of the newly formed Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra where he was involved in the development of a brand new premier level youth orchestra for the state of Alabama. He was also the founder and first music director of the Davis Summer Symphony, an organization geared towards the education and outreach of classical music to residents of the Davis, California community. He has subsequently been invited to guest conduct youth ensembles across the United States. He is also a committed advocate of contemporary music and has performed works by composers such as Kevin Puts, Bela Fleck, Mohammed Fairouz and Avner Dorman.

Born in Chicago in 1983, Haimor was raised in the Middle East and the San Francisco Bay Area. He began playing the violin at the age of 4 and completed his training at the Jacobs School of Music in Indiana University. He has earned bachelor’s degrees in both music and neurobiology, physiology, and behavior, and a master’s degree in conducting from the University of California-Davis before completing his second master’s in instrumental conducting from Indiana University.

Pittsburgh Opera presents Renée Fleming in recital

Pittsburgh, PA…As part of its 75th anniversary celebration, Pittsburgh Opera will present a recital by one of the most beloved and celebrated musical ambassadors of our time. A Western Pennsylvania native, soprano Renée Fleming will give a recital on February 18, 2014, 8:00 p.m., at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. Tickets are available exclusively to Pittsburgh Opera season ticket holders until November 15, 2013.

Ms. Fleming captivates audiences with her sumptuous voice, consummate artistry, and compelling stage presence. At a White House ceremony in July 2013, President Obama awarded Ms. Fleming the National Medal of Arts, America's highest honor for an individual artist. Known as “the people’s diva” and winner of the 2013 GRAMMY® Award for Best Classical Vocal Solo, she continues to grace the world’s greatest opera stages and concert halls, now extending her reach to include other musical forms and media. Over the past few seasons, Ms. Fleming has hosted a wide variety of television and radio broadcasts, including The Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD series for movie theaters and television, and Live from Lincoln Center on PBS.
