Change of Habit Documentary on WQED

CHANGE OF HABIT
A Look at the Impact and Decline of Catholic Nuns in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH – For generations, Catholic religious women in western Pennsylvania filled schools and hospitals pursuing a full-time, faithful mission of charity and love. Numerous orders of “Sisters” educated impoverished immigrants and those who came after them. But now, most of those orders are seeing diminishing numbers.

In a special half-hour documentary called Change of Habit premiering Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 8 pm, WQED-TV examines the painful loss and influence of the Catholic Sisters.

In this heartwarming story, local Sisters have evolved and vow to continue their tireless work in other ministries. As a maximum security prison employee, Benedictine Sister Sue Fazzini says “we might be small but we’re mighty.”

Local Orders featured in the program include: The Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill; The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Baden; and the Franciscan Sisters T.O.R. of Steubenville, Ohio.

With the median age of nuns across the United States at 70, how will the aging orders survive? Will they ever return to full vocations again? Are there really local congregations of sisters that are considered youthful and growing?

Emmy ® Award winning reporter/producer Michael Bartley teams up with Emmy ® Award winning photographer/editor Paul Ruggieri to bring you this unique and historic look back at the contributions of local Sisters and how they expect to serve in the future.

Award-winning comedian and actress Lily Tomlin presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street

Lily Tomlin will be performing at the Byham Theater presenting an evening of her most beloved characters and more current comic material on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. This performance is presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, as a part of the Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series.

One of America’s most beloved comic actresses, Lily Tomlin rose to prominence as a member of 1969’s Laugh-In, where she introduced such characters as Ernestine, the irascible telephone operator, and Edith Ann, the devilish six year old. After Laugh-In left the air, Tomlin co-wrote and starred in six comedy television specials, for which she earned three Emmy Awards and a Writer’s Guild of America award. She later made notable guest appearances on several hit shows, such as CBS’s Murphy Brown, NBC’s Will & Grace and FX’s Damages, for which she earned another Emmy nomination. Tomlin also provided the voice of Ms. Frizzle on the popular PBS animated children’s series, The Magic School Bus, and in 2002 she joined the cast of NBC’s The West Wing in the recurring role of Debbie Fiderer, the president’s secretary.

Tomlin made her Broadway debut in 1977 in Jane Wagner’s play Appearing Nitely, a one-woman show which featured some of her most beloved and memorable characters and earned her a Tony award for her performance. She then appeared in Wagner’s one-woman The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, which earned her a second Tony award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Play. She later reprised this role in the film adaptation of the same name. Tomlin also earned a Grammy Award for her debut comedy album This is a Recording, as well as nominations for her later releases.

On film, Tomlin made her debut in Nashville (1975) as Linnea Reese, a straight-laced gospel singer and mother of two deaf children, for which she earned an Academy Award nomination, and both the New York Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics voted her Best Supporting Actress. She later notably appeared opposite John Travolta in Jane Wagner’s Moment by Moment (1978) and opposite Dolly Parton in the comedy 9 to 5 (1980). Other highlights in Tomlin’s film career include ensemble casts of Woody Allen’s Shadows and Fog (1992), A Prairie Home Companion (2006), The Walker (2007), and Pink Panther II (2009). For her extensive work in film, Tomlin has received the Crystal Award from Women in Film. More information on Tomlin’s extensive career of TV, film, and comedy can be found at lilytomlin.com.

In the fall of 2003, Tomlin was the recipient of the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor presented at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Tomlin continues to make appearances around the nation and, in 2006, took her classic characters to Australia for shows in Sydney and Melbourne. In November 2009, Tomlin debuted in Las Vegas at The MGM Grand Hotel in her new show entitled Not Playing with a Full Deck. She returned there for two engagements in March and April 2010. In 2011, she returned to Australia for several concert appearances and participated in the Mardi Gras Festival. “She has made the one-person show the daring, irreverent art form it is today.” – Newsweek

Tomlin is currently working on new stage, radio, television and social media projects: she is narrating the HBO documentary, For the Love of Elephants; she is working on a television series about the several members of a bizarre and troubled family making good; and she will soon enter the social media arena with new game apps based on her most beloved characters.

Tickets ($35-$55) for the April 25, 2012, performance of Lily Tomlin at the Byham Theater may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at www.TrustArts.org, or by calling (412) 456-6666. To purchase 10 or more tickets at special discounted rates, please call (412) 471-6930.

Astounding audiences around the globe repeatedly since the Emmy® winning PBS performance and the Tony® winning Broadway performances, Blast! is back. Showgoers quickly become fans who return to enjoy and celebrate Blast! over and over again. Along with this ever-growing core following, Blast! attracts to it’s performances newer and newer generations of devotees every time it takes the stage. An event for all ages, Blast! also defies language barriers by performing crowd thrilling instrumental material, making it the perfect touring production.

BLAST!, a celebration of movement and music, almost defies description -- and it has left critics everywhere surprised and delighted. Howard Kissel of the New York Daily News says: “What a cast, what a ‘Blast!’ An exhilarating evening.” Bruce McCabe of the Boston Globe says, “BLAST! doesn’t falter while bridging the categories of classical, blues, jazz, rock n roll, and techno-pop music. BLAST! stands, blows, pounds, marches, and whirls with panache. It sent the full house into repeated bursts of cheering and applause [with] the thrill of seeing sheer virtuosity in a different kind of art form. BLAST! is entertainment of a high order.” And Kevin Nance of The Tennessean raves, “I was helpless in the path of this visual and aural juggernaut, which far outdoes [Stomp and Riverdance] with youthful energy and cocky panache. …I had an absolutely an absolutely marvelous time.”

Born on athletic fields across the nation, BLAST! is a novel art form evolved from the showmanship of outdoor pageantry. A unique experience, BLAST! explodes the genre with the artistry of the theatre. BLAST! is musical spectacle; it is music in motion. Described by Richard Christiansen of the, Chicago Tribune, “‘Blast!’ And a truer word was never spoken. A terrific good time … explosive entertainment. It is indeed a blast.”

BLAST! evolved from the drum corps Star of Indiana, which was founded in 1984 in Bloomington, Indiana, by businessman Bill Cook to benefit young people in music education. The Artistic Director James Mason, is a lifelong veteran of drum and bugle corps and other musical activities. In its initial year, Star of Indiana became the first corps ever to place among the top ten corps at the prestigious Drum Corps International World Championships. Star of Indiana improved each year until it became the World Champion in 1991. Competing against other organizations from the United States, Japan, Canada and Europe, Star’s performances revolutionized the world of drum corps, bringing an ever more sophisticated sense of musicianship, exciting showmanship, and dynamic choreography to this wonderful genre. In 1993, Mr. Mason began shaping the evolution of Star of Indiana from a competitive drum corps into a theatrical show which brings the power, passion and precision of outdoor pageantry to the stage in a musical performance now known as BLAST!

BLAST! on tour consists of 35 members, drawn from the world of outdoor pageantry all across North America. There are over 40 world titles held by BLAST! cast members who comprise three performing sections – the brass, percussion and visual ensembles. The brass instruments are pitched in the standard multi-keys. The percussion section includes drums, mallet instruments and electronic keyboards. The visual element enhances the show by spinning and tossing unusual implements along with the traditional sabers and colorful flags in perfectly synchronized, ballet-like drill.

The physical and musical demands of the production require that the performers be highly trained athletes who are also world-class musicians. Months of intense training prepare the cast. Rehearsing through heat, cold, dust and rain, they produce thrilling performances where athleticism, musical talent, kaleidoscopic movement, and showmanship merge into an art form that is both compelling and entertaining, or in the words of Richard Quzounian of The Toronto Star, “Get your tickets now! BLAST! is nothing short of breathtaking; a free-wheeling fusion of then and now, [it] dazzles the eye, thrills the ear and stirs the spirit. A sure-fire hit.”

BLAST! is produced and booked by Prather Entertainment Group. PBS, the Public Broadcast Service, supports BLAST! with a one hour special program. The official BLAST! cast recording is available on RCA Victor. For further information on BLAST! and the 2011 North American tour, visit www.blasttheshow.com
