Pittsburgh – Jan. X, 2013 – Charlie Thomas’ Drifters, one of the rock era’s most popular and prolific groups and one of the first groups inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, will headline the Roots of Rock and Roll Volume XXXIX on two shows, 5:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Saturday February 23, 2012 at Pittsburgh’s Benedum Center. The Drifters’ are celebrating 60 years in show business and their 30 chart hits include enormous tunes such as “Under the Boardwalk,” “Up on the Roof,” “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “On Broadway,” “This Magic Moment,” and many more. The Roots of Rock and Roll concert series has appealed to audiences of all ages for three decades and is the premier venue for the music that shaped rock ‘n’ roll and American culture. These shows also focused the nation’s entertainment spotlight on Pittsburgh and created record-setting television and fund-raising productions for PBS.

Kenny Vance & the Planotones

Kenny Vance, an original member of Jay and the Americans, has secured his spot in doo wop history by assembling the Planotones, a crowd favorite.  Their harmony will soar on “Cara Mia,” “Diamonds and Pearls,” “Come Go with Me,” “Angel Baby” and Kenny’s doo wop anthem, “Looking for an Echo.”

The Flamingos, featuring Terry Johnson, are among the most popular acts of the concert series.  They stir audiences with haunting ballads like “I Only have Eyes for You,” “Mio Amore,” “Lovers Never Say Goodbye,” “Love Walked In” and many more tunes. Also Hall of Fame inductees, the Flamingos are among rock’s royalty and their tunes have been featured in numerous TV shows and films, including “The Sopranos” and “A Bronx Tale.”

The “Roots” audience will get a taste of “Love Potion No. 9” when another hugely popular group, the Original Clovers, featuring Harold Winley, reprises that smash hit plus others  like “Devil or Angel,” “One Mint Julep,” “Lovey Dovey” and “Your Cash Ain’t Nothin’ but Trash.”

The show will also feature a group that created one of Pittsburgh’s most evocative ballads – the Charts with “Deserie.”  And rounding out the show will be two single acts featuring tunes that have become endearing to Pittsburgh doo wop fans – the fabulous Kathy Young performing her anthem “A Thousand Stars” and Josh White, Jr. publicly performing his Pittsburgh hit, “Do You Close Your eyes,” for the first time ever.

Opening both shows for the 39th time will be Pittsburgh’s favorite show band, Pure Gold. Pure Gold demonstrates a unique love and respect for R&B, doo wop and rock ‘n’ roll through their flawless five-part harmony and unmatched orchestration.  Pure Gold’s vocalists and band have provided accompaniment for countless top acts including Eddie Holman, Jerry Butler, Frankie Valli, Dionne Warwick, Gene “Duke of Earl” Chandler, Lenny Welch, Connie Francis and the late Lou Rawls.  They have anchored more than 20 nationally broadcast PBS concerts.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents international virtuoso violinist David Garrett - Rock Symphonies II Tour

Internationally-acclaimed violinist David Garrett will return to Pittsburgh on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at 8:00 p.m., at the Benedum Center. This concert is part of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Cohen and Grigsby Trust Presents series, and is a presentation of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

David Garrett’s current U.S. tour, Rock Symphonies II, coincides with and promotes his 2011 CD with same title. Along with his five-piece band, the tour will feature Garrett’s arrangements of rock anthems mixing a little classical with a lot of rock: Vivaldi vs. Vertigo (U2), Walk this Way (Aerosmith), Kashmir (Led Zeppelin), Master of Puppets (Metallica) and Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) to name a few.

David Garrett began playing violin at age four and was signed to the prestigious classical music label Deutsche Grammophon by age thirteen. Already described as “…an entire corpus of virtuoso violin art, expounded with a fearsome beauty beyond comprehension” by BBC Music Magazine, David Garrett has achieved a lifetime of musical accomplishments early in his musical career. Garrett has gained international stardom, with gold and platinum selling discs internationally, and chart-topping albums in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Far East and the U.S., plus a Top 20 U.K. hit.

Co-hosts Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone and Davy Jones of The Monkees introduce the legends of the 1960s in this all-new live performance “My Music” special. Focusing on the years 1965 to 1969, MY MUSIC: 60s Pop, Rock and Soul includes pop sounds from Frat Rock to Surf Pop, the British Beat to the Breakthrough Bands, Motown, Soul, and Pop classics – with many artists and groups appearing for the first time on the “My Music” stage.

A first-time appearance by The Ventures performing “Hawaii 5-0,” with the full TJL/My Music orchestra of Pittsburgh, faithfully re-create the theme to the original show in a tribute to Jack Lord. Noone and Jones also perform popular hits from their former bands like “I’m Into Something Good” and “Daydream Believer.” With psychedelic rock classics such as Jefferson Starship’s “White Rabbit,” Eddie Holman’s “Hey There Lonely Girl,” Eddy Floyd’s “Knock On Wood,” Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman,” plus original Miracles members Bobby Rodgers and Claudette Robinson harmonizing their timeless “OOO Baby Baby, MY MUSIC: 60s Pop, Rock and Soul takes viewers on a retro trip down the rabbit hole to celebrate the best of the late 60s.

“When I first moved to Pittsburgh in 1987, “Magic Town” was playing on the radio – with hopes and dreams, we created musical magic right here in Pittsburgh. Now, all these years later, having fulfilled the dream of bringing Pittsburgh singers and songs to the nation, we have come full circle with the first television performance of my friends Bill and Hugh – singers who are always in vogue,” said MY MUSIC creator and executive producer TJ Lubinsky.

After the broadcast on December 3, WQED-TV will air an exclusive half-hour special at 10 pm called TJ Lubinsky Presents Made In Pittsburgh – tunes from Turtle Creek and Moon Township that include additional never-before-broadcast performances from Pittsburgh music legends Bill Burkette and Hugh Geyer (original lead singer and first tenor on such hits as “Five O’Clock World,” “You’re the One,” “Magic Town,” and more) from Turtle Creek and vocalist Lou Christie from Moon Township. This special was produced specifically for a Pittsburgh audience and highlights local music legends and their contributions to the era.

About Arlo Guthrie

Arlo Guthrie was born into a musical atmosphere in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York (1947). He is the first born of America’s most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie, and wife Majorie Mazia Guthrie. Because Arlo was constantly surrounded by dancers and musicians, they became a significant influence on Arlo’s musical career. He made his first public performance at age 13, and has since developed his own unique style with a distinctive, expressive voice.

Arlo’s career exploded with the release of the paradigmatic anti-war anthem, “Alice’s Restaurant” (1967). Arlo is mostly known for his array of protest songs of the sixties. For more than 40 years, he has toured throughout the world, winning diverse followers along the way. He has been a musical success since day one, and now has over 25 albums to date. Alongside his performing career, he launched his own record label, Rising Son Records (1983). To top off his list of accomplishments, he has entered the acting world with jobs on both ABC’s “Byrds of Paradise” as well as USA’s “Renegade.”

Arlo Guthrie has received much recognition for his accomplishments, including a Grammy nomination for the collaboration with his father, Woody Guthrie, on “This Land is Your Land,” and Arlo’s “Mooses Come Walking” is an award-winning children’s book.

About the Boys’ Night Out Band

Abe Guthrie has accompanied his father on keyboards and backing vocals for over 25 years, and the bond is almost tangible. Terry Hall has traveled and recorded with Arlo for over thirty years, originally as the drummer for Shenandoah in the 70s and most recently on 2011’s Journey On tour. Krishna Guthrie first appeared literally on Arlo’s Mystic Journey album (Rising Son Records, 1996), as the baby in Arlo’s arms on the cover. Now all grown up and a skilled guitarist, Krishna represents the third generation on stage.

Brooklyn’s avant-garde alternative rock pioneers They Might Be Giants return with a brand new show to regale Pittsburghers with their boundless energy, witty lyrics and catchy melodies. The beloved cult band will celebrate the release of their brand new 18-song album Join Us and their 30th year anniversary. They Might Be Giants will perform on Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at 8:00 p.m., at the Byham Theater. The concert is presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Opus One Productions, as part of the Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series.

Founded in 1982 by John Flansburgh and John Linnell, the unlikely success story of They Might Be Giants began with their Dial-A-Song service and the low budget videos which broke them into heavy rotation on MTV. A key part of the early ’80s explosion of visual art, music, and performance art of New York’s East Village, Flansburgh says of the band, “we’ve heard avant-garde music, we’ve heard popular music… that’s given us the notion that we can be as original as we can be and still make worthwhile songs.” They Might Be Giants writes, records and tours continuously, and has been involved in numerous television and film projects, including an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, winning a GRAMMY for their theme song for Malcolm In the Middle and many more, as well as creating an on-going podcast. John Flansburgh and John Linnell will be joined on tour by Dan Miller on guitar, Danny Weinkauf on bass, and Marty Beller on drums.



They Might Be Giants new album, Join Us, is the electrifying mix of clever, beguiling songwriting and studio mastery. Sometimes strange and always original, the album finds Flansburgh and Linnell on a creative roll, making music that positively swarms with innovation. “We’re flying our freak flag super high on this one,” says Flansburgh. In this lavishly illustrated photographic journey based on her memoir A Camera, Two Kids, and a Camel, Griffiths shares stories of international travel and intimate moments and the art she created along the way. Griffith also discusses her work with Ripple Effect Images, a team of journalists that raises awareness and funding to empower women and girls in emerging nations worldwide.
