ANNOUNCES LOTTERY TICKET POLICY

PERFORMANCES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 23 AT HEINZ HALL

Pittsburgh, PA– THE BOOK OF MORMON, winner of nine Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, is pleased to announce a lottery ticket policy for the National Tour, which begins Tuesday, September 23 at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, PA and plays a limited two week engagement through Sunday, October 5, 2014.  In Pittsburgh, the production will conduct a pre-show lottery at the Box Office at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, making a limited number of tickets available at $25 per ticket.

The wildly popular lottery for the Broadway production has attracted as many as 800 entries at some performances.  The producers of THE BOOK OF MORMON are pleased to offer low-priced lottery seats for every city on the National Tour.  

Entries will be accepted at the Box Office at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, beginning two and a half hours prior to each performance; each person will print their name and the number of tickets (1 or 2) they wish to purchase on a card that is provided. Two hours before curtain, names will be drawn at random for a limited number of tickets priced at $25 each. Only one entry is allowed per person. Cards are checked for duplication prior to drawing. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing and show valid ID to purchase tickets. Limit one entry per person and two tickets per winner. Tickets are subject to availability.

THE BOOK OF MORMON features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. Parker and Stone are the four-time Emmy Award-winning creators of the landmark animated series, “South Park.” Tony Award®-winner Lopez is co-creator of the long-running hit musical comedy, AVENUE Q.  The musical is choreographed by Tony Award®-winner Casey Nicholaw (Monty Python’s SPAMALOT, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE) and is directed by Nicholaw and Parker.

Daniel J. Self (Munkustrap) makes his Pittsburgh CLO debut. Previously appearing in the 30th Anniversary North American Tour of CATS and the 1st National Tour of Catch Me If You Can, Daniel received his training at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts on the Central Coast of California. Favorite roles include Gabe in Next to Normal and Andy Lee in 42nd Street.

Andrew Wilson (Mr. Mistofelees) hails from Grove City, PA, where he studied gymnastics and dance at Butler Gymnastics Club & Dotty McGill’s School of Dance. National tours: Cathy Rigby is Peter Pan(MSG), CATS (25th Anniversary), Seven Brides. He originated the role of the Magic Carpet in Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular on the recently opened Disney Fantasy cruise ship. Favorite credits: Miss Saigon(Dragon Acrobat/Dance Captain), Cav/Pag (Featured Gymnast, NYC Opera), Wizard of Oz (Sac. Music Circus) and Toy Story: The Musical original cast (Dance Captain).

Sara Blodgett (Victoria) has appeared in Pittsburgh CLO productions of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Alice), Phantom (Belladova) and 42nd Street.  International tour: West Side Story. Richard Stafford (Director/Choreographer) has multiple Pittsburgh CLO credits, including Oliver!, Joseph…Dreamcoat, CATS, On the Town, Phantom and Camelot.  Broadway: choreographer for In My Life (Music Box Theatre), dance supervisor for CATS (Winter Garden Theatre). International: The Full Monty, Joseph … Dreamcoat (Mexico City), CATS (Copenhagen, Sao Paulo, Rio). National Tours:CATS, My Fair Lady, Joseph … Dreamcoat (starring Debbie Gibson and Patrick Cassidy). Recent Regional: classics such as The King and I, Crazy for You and Annie Get Your Gun as well as musicals such as Miss Saigon, Curtains, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at premier theatres around the country. Mr. Stafford won the Barrymore Award for outstanding choreography for La Cage aux Folles at the Walnut Street Theatre.

Tom Helm (Music Director) returns for his 19th season with Pittsburgh CLO. His theater credits include the Broadway productions of Souvenir, Les Misérables, Me and My Girl, Cats and Brigadoon. He has also contributed his talents to television programs such as “Crazy For You” and the “Today Show.” Mr. Helm has conducted at Radio City Music Hall, Paper Mill Playhouse and many other regional and national theaters.

Andrew David Ostrowski (Lighting Designer) recently completed work on Pittsburgh CLO’s Singin’ in the Rain, Legally Blonde the Musical, Footloose and Ring of Fire at the CLO Cabaret. He has designed for every local company in Pittsburgh. National credits include: The Asolo, Virginia Stage Company, North Shore Music Theatre, Merrimack Reparatory Company, The Arden Theatre Company, Spoleto Festival USA, Dallas Summer Musicals, Theater of the Stars, Madison Opera, as well as others. International credits include productions in Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, France, and touring all of Western Europe.

HISTORY OF THE SHOW

CATS first premiered in 1980 as a collection of songs, with lyrics based off of T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and music arranged by Andrew Lloyd Webber. When Webber debuted the songs at the Sydmonton Festival in London, Eliot’s widow Valerie Fletcher approached the composer with a collection of her late husband’s unpublished work. It was then that the idea to transform the series of songs into a full-scale musical was born.

Later that same year, Webber collaborated with director Trevor Nunn to create a story from the famous book for poems that would translate to the stage. Three of the unpublished poems that were given to Webber by Fletcher were incorporated into the show in their entirety, including “Grizabella the Glamour Cat.”

Since its debut on the West End in 1981, CATS has become an international phenomenon and holds the current record as the second-longest running Broadway musical of all time, surpassed only by Webber’s own The Phantom of the Opera. The show has been translated into 10 different languages and performed in 26 countries. It has won numerous awards, including the 1981 Laurence Olivier award for Musical of the Year, the Evening Standard award for Best Musical, and seven 1983 Tony® awards, including Best Musical.

ABOUT THE ORIGINAL COMPOSER

Andrew Lloyd Webber (Music) is the composer of The Likes of Us, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, By Jeeves, Evita, Variations and Tell Me on a Sundaylater combined as Song & Dance, CATS, Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love,Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind, The Beautiful Game, The Woman in White and Love Never Dies. He composed the film scores of “Gumshoe” and “The Odessa File” and a setting of the Latin Requiem mass. Recent producer credits include A.R. Rahman's Bombay Dreams, The Sound of Music,The Wizard of Oz and films of “The Phantom of the Opera” and the acclaimed Australian production of “Love Never Dies.” He pioneered television casting for musical theatre with the Emmy Award-winning "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” His awards include seven Tonys®, three Grammys, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers and the Kennedy Center Honor.

PITTSBURGH, PA:  The National Tour of THE GERSHWINS’ PORGY AND BESS, winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, will star original Broadway cast members ALICIA HALL MORAN as Bess, NATHANIEL STAMPLEY as Porgy and PHILLIP BOYKIN as Crown.  The tour will also feature Broadway cast members SUMAYYA ALI as Clara, DAN BARNHILL as the Detective, BRYONHA MARIE PARHAM as Serena, ALLISON BLACKWELL as a Woman of Catfish Row, ROOSEVELT ANDRÉ CREDIT as a Fisherman and JOSEPH DELLGER as the Policeman. Complete casting will be announced this summer.

Moran performed the role of Bess in THE GERSHWINS’ PORGY AND BESS during the Broadway run. She has also appeared in the critically acclaimed cabaret, the motown project, Things of the Heart, andThe Three Penny Opera. Moran co-wrote and performed vocal music for Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Co.’s Chapel/Chapter. Moran embraces a broad musical repertoire, including classical and avant-garde, Jazz, Motown and Broadway.

David Alan Grier in Revival of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess

In addition to his portrayal of Porgy in the Broadway production of THE GERSHWINS’ PORGY AND BESS, Stampley recently appeared on Broadway in The Color Purple and The Lion King as well as the West End production of The Lion King and the national tour of Ragtime. Stampley’s other credits include Pacific Overtures with Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Lost in the Stars with NY City Center’s Encores!, as well as Strike Up the  Band and One Touch of Venus with Auditorium Theatre’s Ovations! series.

The National Tour of THE GERSHWINS’ PORGY AND BESS, winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, will launch at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theatre this November. The tour, accompanied by a 23-piece orchestra, will begin performances Sunday, Nov. 10 with an official opening on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The national tour will travel to more than 20 cities in its first season in addition to San Francisco, including Los Angeles (Ahmanson Theatre), Seattle (5th Avenue Theatre), Dallas (Winspear Opera House), West Palm Beach, Tampa, Naples, Greenville, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Buffalo, East Lansing, St. Paul, Des Moines, Las Vegas, Tempe and Charlotte, with additional cities to be announced in the coming days.

THE GERSHWINS’ PORGY AND BESS by GEORGE GERSHWIN, DUBOSE and DOROTHY HEYWARD, and IRA GERSHWIN, features one of Broadway’s most accomplished creative teams, led by Tony-nominated director DIANE PAULUS (Pippin, Hair), Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright SUZAN-LORI PARKS (Topdog/Underdog), and two-time Obie Award-winning composer DIEDRE L. MURRAY(Running Man). The creative team also includes choreographer RONALD K. Based on DuBose Heyward's novel “Porgy” and the play of the same name, which he co-wrote with his wife Dorothy Heyward, the Broadway revival of THE GERSHWINS’ PORGY AND BESS is a stunning and stirring new staging, including such legendary songs as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing.” The classic story is set in Charleston’s fabled Catfish Row, where the beautiful Bess struggles to break free from her scandalous past, and the only one who can rescue her is the courageous Porgy. Threatened by her formidable former lover Crown, and the seductive enticements of the colorful troublemaker Sporting Life, Porgy and Bess’ relationship evolves into a deep romance that triumphs as one of theater’s most exhilarating love stories.

THE GERSHWINS’ PORGY AND BESS first premiered at the Colonial Theatre in Boston on September 30, 1935. Broadway performances followed featuring a cast of classically trained African-American singers — a daring and visionary artistic choice at the time. On stage, Taymor’s creative vision blends elements of African art and Broadway artisanship to depict anthropomorphic animal characters.  Taymor, along with designer Michael Curry, has created hundreds of masks and puppets for THE LION KING.  The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed The Lion King animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay.

The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from The Lion King animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from "Rhythm of the Pride Lands," an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer.  The resulting sound of THE LION KING is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, ranging from the Academy Award®-winning song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” to the haunting ballad “Shadowland.”

Other members of the creative team include:  Steve Canyon Kennedy (sound design), Michael Ward (hair and makeup design), John Stefaniuk (associate director), Marey Griffith (associate choreographer), Clement Ishmael (music supervisor) and Doc Zorthian (Production Supervisor).  Anne Quart serves as associate producer.

PITTSBURGH – The Tony Award-winning musical Chicago kicks off the “Broadway at Heinz Hall’ series with performances starting Thursday, Nov. 8.

Now in its 16th glorious year of girls, glitz and glamour on the Great White Way, the record-breaking smash hit musical Chicago is now the fourth longest-running production in Broadway history.

With a legendary book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording.

Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids.

The national tour is directed by Scott Faris and choreographed by Gary Chryst.  Walter Bobbie is the director of the original New York Production and Ann Reinking was the original choreographer in the style of Bob Fosse. Chicago features set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Ken Billington and sound design by Scott Lehrer. The production also features orchestrations by Ralph Burns, supervising music direction by Rob Fisher.

Madeline Trumble

Con O'Shea Creal

Madeline Trumble will star as “Mary Poppins” while Con O’Shea Creal will assume the role of “Bert.”

Trumble is making her return to the national tour of Mary Poppins after recently appearing in the Broadway company of Disney’s Newsies-The Musical.  She has also been seen in stage productions at the MUNY in St. Louis and Berkley Repertory Theatre.

Trumble will appear alongside Con O’Shea Creal, who plays the affable chimney sweep, “Bert.” Creal recently performed with the Broadway and national touring companies of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.  Originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, Creal has also appeared in regional productions of Singin’ in the Rain, 42nd Street, Annie Get Your Gun, A Christmas Carol, and Urinetown.

Joining Trumble and Creal will be Michael Dean Morgan as “George Banks”, Elizabeth Broadhurst as “Winifred Banks”, Tregoney Shepherd as “Mrs. Brill”, Blake Segal as “Robertson Ay”, Karen Murphy as “Miss Andrew” and “The Bird Woman”, and Ryan Hilliard as “Admiral Boom.” Performances in the role of “Jane Banks” will be alternated between Madison Ann Mullahey and Julianna Rigoglioso.  Performances in the role of “Michael Banks” will be alternated between Eli Tokash and Zachary Mackiewicz.
