2014–2015 PITTSBURGH DANCE COUNCIL SEASON

Pittsburgh, PA—  The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces single tickets go on sale, Friday, August 29, at 9AM, for the 2014–2015 Pittsburgh Dance Council season.  Pittsburgh Dance Council is a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.  All performances will take place at the Byham Theater located at 101 6th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

The 2014–2015 Pittsburgh Dance Council Season includes the following six performances.  Also, two special dance events presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust: Royal Ballet of Cambodia and Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host are additional recommendations to dance patrons.

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet

Simply breathtaking. – Chicago Sun Times

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s bold vision focuses on presenting groundbreaking work from the world’s most exciting, emerging choreographers. Square None, the company’s first commission by Norbert De La Cruz III, is an ambitious and expansive piece that explores themes of youth and naiveté. The Aspen Times says, “It felt like a thrill, like a discovery of something new.”  Beautiful Mistake, a stunning piece by Spanish choreographer Cayetano Soto, expertly exhibits the gorgeous physicality of this incredible company through dynamic partnering. The newest work, Heart(s)pace by company-favorite Nicolo Fonte, gives audiences a distinctively unique experience as the stage glows with exuberant light and color. Influenced by love and compassion, this abstract piece illuminates the importance of touch.

The rebellious sensibilities of British dance iconoclast Michael Clark have catapulted him to the forefront of innovative contemporary dance. Fusing extreme elements of classical and punk, Michael Clark’s technical rigor and unabashed experimentation consistently breaks new ground to provoke and electrify audiences. Michael Clark’s critically-acclaimed work come, been and gone features the music of 1970s rock legends David Bowie and Iggy Pop. At once sensual and damaged, Clark’s masterpiece Swamp is drenched in exquisitely textured patterns of movement. Program contains partial nudity. Presented in partnership with the British Council.

Ronald K. Brown masterfully threads elements of African, modern, ballet and social styles, elevating dance as a medium to communicate the human experience. The Brooklyn-based company Evidence poignantly executes Brown’s signature vision of forging contemporary choreography rooted in the beauty of traditional African forms and rhythms. In the extraordinary work The Subtle One, set to the music of jazz musicians Jason Moran and Tarus Mateen, Brown transcends the human struggle and aspirations for connection between spiritual beings and mortals. In On Earth Together, Stevie Wonder’s music deepens Brown’s exploration of love and compassion and features dancers from the Pittsburgh community working alongside dancers from Evidence.

French Argentinean ensemble Union Tanguera brings the sensuality and art of tango to life with their original, stimulating interpretation of the social dance style reimagined for the stage. Featuring live music performed by one of Buenos Aires’s finest quartets, the French Argentinean ensemble of seven dancers presents savory, stylized dance theater with dramatic flair.  Set in a nameless nightclub at the end of a traditional tango show, Nuit Blanche illuminates the wanderings, desires, and fears that surface during one sleepless night—unveiling a seductive, late night world where dancers express themselves through intimate, uninhibited dance.

A rising star on the international dance scene, Swedish choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker Pontus Lidberg has created more than 35 works for major dance companies such as Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, SemperOper Ballet Dresden, Morphoses, and his own company, Pontus Lidberg Dance. His brand-new work, Snow, is a turbulent choreographic composition set in a ceaseless snowfall. The choreography presents a poetic look at the fragile human reality of existence, in contrast to the relentless power of nature. Four world-class dancers, including Lidberg himself, will take the stage together with a lifelike, highly expressive Japanese-style Bunraku puppet to tell a dynamic and poetic story of human experience.

The iconic, heartbreaking tale of human frailty is set to a saucy, jazz-inspired score and aptly dressed in striking vintage-styled costumes. The retelling of Streetcar is exemplary of Scottish Ballet’s niche for re-imagining classic stories with fresh relevance for contemporary audiences.

Don’t miss this fun, quirky event where radio meets dance in an unlikely, wonderful evening that gives the feeling of an amazing dance performance and a heartfelt This American Life episode.

Season Premieres with “An Evening of Twyla Tharp” at the Benedum

(Pittsburgh, PA) – In anticipation of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s season opener this fall, Tuesday, Sept. 3, marks opening day for single ticket sales to 2013-2014 Season productions.  The 2013-2014 Season premieres with “An Evening of Twyla Tharp,” onstage Oct. 25-27, at the Benedum Center.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s 2013-2014 Season features a PBT world premiere by choreographer Viktor Plotnikov, a mixed repertory performance at the August Wilson Center and two of classical ballet’s most masterful stories. The five-production lineup includes An Evening of Twyla Tharp, The Nutcracker,Swan Lake with the Orchestra, 3x3 and Don Quixote with the Orchestra.

PBT pushes the boundaries of ballet in a mixed repertory program showcasing three of today’s most compelling choreographers. Experience an unconventional exploration of ballet musicality and movement featuring a PBT world premiere by Viktor Plotnikov, the cross-cultural fusion of Julia Adam’s “Ketubah” and the expressive syncopation of Dwight Rhoden’s “Smoke ‘n Roses” set to the live vocals of Pittsburgh’s own Etta Cox. In “Ketubah” – a 2014 Pittsburgh premiere – Adam draws from her own heritage to set in motion a series of Jewish marriage customs through a hybrid of ballet, modern and Israeli folk dance accompanied by traditional Klezmer music.

PITTSBURGH, June 15, 2013 – Visionary Performing Arts Academy (VPAA) will host their 14th annual dance production entitled Something Big at six o’clock in the evening at the Byham Theater.  Something Big is sure to be an uplifting, gear shifting dance production that will motivate and inspire all that attend.   More so, this production will allow youth ages 2 – 18 from Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas to display their love for performing arts through the gift of dance.

Over the past 13 years, VPAA has presented to the community grand and wholesome dance productions that have encouraged the spirit of music and movement to provide people with a sense of hope to persevere and continue moving forward no matter the ups and downs that life brings.

Founded by Artistic Director, Nicole M. Carter in 1998 with the intent to establish a positive environment that enables quality dance instruction to be brought forth to all youth whom desire to learn the art of dance, VPAA is dedicated to instilling values, pride, confidence and a feeling of self-worth to the children in all of our communities.

Come out and experience an evening of inspiring dance in celebration of the fulfillment of God’s promises.  There will be Glitz and plenty of Glamour.  Our students have worked so hard to ensure that viewers will be delighted as they showcase their Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Lyrical moves to the musical tunes that are certain to relate with everyone whether classical, gospel or beats that carry a more urban flare. Too, the stage will be dressed and filled with radiant energy to keep you fully engaged from start to finish.

Pittsburgh, PA (For Release: May 5, 2013):  The Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, announces an outstanding array of dance from around the world that will grace our stages this season!  Paul Organisak, Executive Director, comments “Pittsburgh Dance Council is pleased to continue to present some of the finest companies whose diversity of artistic expression and culture are certain to captivate, challenge and entertain you during the 2013-2014 Season.  With a focus on delivering new and fresh experiences and international flair, the Dance Council brings a snapshot of contemporary dance and performance.”

The Pittsburgh Dance Council will be featured prominently during the return of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s International Festival of Firsts with the US premiere of a work by the remarkable Marie Chouinard and the US premiere presentation of Switzerland’s ground-breaking physical theatre of Zimmerman & de Perrot.  Three Pittsburgh premieres fill out the second half of the season with the incredibly dynamic Compagnie Käfig from Brazil, the gorgeous performers of Ballet Genève, and the rare opportunity to see an evening of dance featuring Wendy Whelan.  The season will close with the return of a popular Dance Council series performance by Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance.

Selected to launch the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, the evening's program will include the U.S. premiere of Gymnopedies, set to the glorious solo piano pieces of Eric Satie and Henri Michaux:Mouvements, inspired by a book of poetry and drawings by Belgian artist Henri Michaux. In HenryMichaux: Mouvements, the dancers form a stunning silhouette to projections exuding a haunting sense that they, in the artist’s words, are connected to “the strangeness of natural things and the naturalness of strange things.”

Who knew testosterone and tutus could combine to create a comical and methodical critique of dance? Over thirty-five years ago in hopes of incorporating some entertainment and excitement into the dance world, these New York men grabbed their Pointe ballet slippers and went to work.  Men from all over the world make up this diverse Russian-style ballet company, and each of them has donned a clever female alias as their stage persona. The men dance parodies of classic ballets as well as more modern compositions; creating a satire on the rigid standards that serious dancers are being held to.

“The Trocks,” as they have affectionately become known, have been winning over audiences with their charismatic shows from the beginning. Stemming from recognition in publications The Trocks have performed venues internationally, at dance festivals, on television shows, they have even been the subject of several television specials and documentaries. Comedy creates happiness, and the comedy created by The Trocks transcends culture, age, and even knowledge of dance.

Bringing ballet to new and diverse audiences, “The Trocks are a guaranteed hoot for people who know nothing of ballet and an absolute must for those who think they know the originals,” according to theSydney Star Observer. Spanning works by 20th Century contemporaries George Balanchine and Antony Tudor to present-day dance force Mark Morris, the Unspoken program features Tudor’s evocative Jardin Aux Lilas (Lilac Garden), Balanchine’s classical Serenade and Morris’ joyful Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes.

A signature of Balanchine repertoire, Serenade premiered in 1935, and holds the distinction as the first ballet that Balanchine choreographed in America. Serenade features 28 dancers in a work of pure musicality and emotional energy created for Tchaikovsky’s soaring Serenade for Strings in C, Op. 48. Although Serenade is an abstract ballet based in the beauty of the movement and its musicality, the emotion of the music and interplay of the dancers suggest an underlying storyline. Balanchine originally choreographed Serenade to prepare his advanced ballet students for the stage in the early years of the School of American Ballet by translating the disciplined technique of ballet class to a sophisticated stage quality. It remained one of Balanchine’s favorite ballets throughout the years and has been transformed and staged for the world’s leading ballet companies and highly-trained professional dancers.

Despite its brief 18-minutes, Jardin Aux Lilas (Lilac Garden) is a true story ballet, binding audiences to the bittersweet farewell of two lovers and the music of Ernest Chausson’s Poeme for violin and orchestra Opus 28. Free from mime and extraneous gestures, the story is held solely in the steps as Caroline, on the eve of her marriage to the man she does not love, parts from her lover at a garden reception.  Perfumed by lilac blossoms, the party encapsulates the repressed emotion of the characters amid the societal restraints of the Edwardian Era. At the time of its 1936 world premiere, Jardin Aux Lilas broke with balletic conventions by placing dancers in colloquial Edwardian dress and society rather than the more fanciful costumes and settings of the classical story ballets. Rooted in pure, classical style, Tudor distinguished his choreography with emotional exploration of realistic situations that challenged dancers to project the ballet’s meaning through clear intention in each step. The ballet is brimming with rich details and meaning, beginning with Caroline’s quiet intake of breath and ending with her exhalation in the last movement. According to repetition Donald Mahler, who set the piece on PBT dancers,  the essence of Tudor’s ballets is that “the people and motivations are real — there is an honesty in doing Tudor.”

Set to 13 piano etudes by American composer Virgil Thomson, Mark Morris’ Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyespresents a refreshing and inventive interpretation of classical ballet vocabulary. Described as “undeviating in his devotion to music,” Morris’ Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes is no exception, immersing dancers in a joyful exploration of Thomson’s playful score, which will be played live at the August Wilson Center by PBT Company Pianist Yoland Collin.  The title of the ballet is taken from Ben Jonson’s 1616 poem To Celia, which was set to music sometime after 1770 and remains a popular traditional English folk song. Thomson uses the tune in the piano etudeTenor Lead, which is the last etude in the ballet. Thomson is one of several composers associated with the development of the “American sound” in classical music, and his work has been described as marked by clarity, simplicity and humor, and rooted in American “hymnbook harmony.” Originally created for American Ballet Theatre in 1988, Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes evokes a sense of ease and naturalness among dancers and moments of humor, tenderness and congeniality.

About the Choreographers
George Balanchine
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Mr. Balanchine (1904-1983), was undoubtedly the most brilliant choreographer of our generation. George Balanchine's gifts to ballet are legion. He stretched the dance and dancer beyond their established limits, and along the way created a vocabulary and an aesthetic that changed the way we look at dance. He emphasized increased turnout, batterie, port de bras and fast movement, as well as higher extensions and softer, lighter landings from jumps. In short, he got people dancing bigger and faster than ever before. The celebrated Balanchine style has influenced the technical training of ballet dancers and choreographers throughout the world. Mr. Balanchine created more than 400 dance works. His ballets are in the repertoires of the world's major ballet companies.

Antony Tudor
Antony Tudor (1908-1987), was one of the giants of twentieth century choreography. He began dancing professionally in 1927 when he joined Marie Rambert's company, where he choreographed and danced such works as The Planets and Lilac Garden. In 1940 he moved to New York City, joining American Ballet Theatre, for which he created many of his signature “psychological” ballets, including Pillar of Fire and Shadow of the Wind. In these works he sought to convey emotional conflict and aspects of character and motivation. In 1986, Tudor was a recipient of the Capezio Award, and in May 1986, with the Handel Medallion, New York City’s highest cultural honor. In December of the same year he was the recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor.

Mark Morris
Mark Morris was born on August 29, 1956, in Seattle, Washington, where he studied with Verla Flowers and Perry Brunson. He formed the Mark Morris Dance Group in 1980, and has since created more than 140 works for the company. From 1988-1991, he was Director of Dance at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, the national opera house of Belgium. In 1990, he founded the White Oak Dance Project with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Much in demand as a ballet choreographer, Morris has created eighteen ballets since 1986 and his work is in the repertory of companies worldwide. He also works extensively in opera, directing and choreographing at the Metropolitan Opera, The Royal Opera, Covent Garden, among others. Morris is currently serving as music director of the 2013 Ojai Music Festival.

PITTSBURGH BALLET THEATRE SCHOOL DIRECTORS HOLD PITTSBURGH AUDITIONS TO CONCLUDE NATION-WIDE TOUR

PITTSBURGH, PA (February 2013) –Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School  - the official training institution of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre – concludes a nation-wide audition tour for its 2013 Intensive Summer Program with Pittsburgh auditions on  Sunday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. at the PBT Studios in the Strip District.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School Directors Marjorie Grundvig and Dennis Marshall and School Principal Janet Popeleski kicked off PBT School’s 2013 audition tour in January, and held auditions at 28 sites, in 27 cities and 16 states to bring young dance talent to Pittsburgh. In addition to U.S. sites, Mr. Marshall also held auditions in Osaka, Japan in August. The audition team selects students from each audition to attend the school’s 2013 Intensive Summer Program (ISP).  The U.S. audition tour concludes in Pittsburgh on February 17, 2013, at the PBT Studios, 2900 Liberty Avenue.

PBT School’s ISP is a five-week program of diverse dance curriculum, including ballet technique, partnering, pointe and repertoire as well as jazz, modern and character dance. Under the direction of PBT Artistic Director Terrence S. Orr and School Directors Marjorie Grundvig and Dennis Marshall, ISP includes instruction by prominent PBT faculty members and guest instructors of international acclaim. With classes six days a week, students will also attend seminars and workshops focused on nutrition, choreography, injury prevention and the psychology of dance. The PBT School Intensive Summer Program is designed to instill long-term value for the art form through the study of diverse, high-quality techniques that adapt well to the demands of professional ballet companies.

The nation-wide audition tour draws more than 600 candidates and places more than 170 students from around the United States into the program.  Students living outside the United States are invited to audition by video, and the program often accepts students from around the world, including Australia, Brazil, China, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Hungary and Taiwan.  The PBT School ISP has recently seen a surge in participation by young Japanese students as a result of Mr. Marshall’s engagement with the annual Japan Grand Prix ballet competition, where he serves (2009-present) on an international panel of judges.  PBT School has earned the distinguished reputation as an artistic and instructional leader of dance training and offers aspiring dancers a comprehensive curriculum in a professional, fast-paced environment.

The auditions and program are open to male and female ballet dancers ages 12 and older.  The program features a strong male to female ratio; generally 1:4, a competitive ratio that distinguishes PBT School from other programs by allowing students to maximize their partnering classes.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School

 Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School is the official training institution of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and has an enrollment of more than 900 students, including the Children’s, Student, Pre-Professional and Open Divisions. The Children’s Division gives young students an introduction to ballet and prepares them for advancement to the Student Division. Dancers in the Student Division work to refine their technique and dancers in the Pre- Professional Program prepare for professional ballet careers. Many students perform in an annual School Spring Performance at the Byham Theater, and some students are chosen by Artistic Director Terrence S. Orr to perform with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre at the Benedum Center.


ISP Housing

Supervised room and board accommodations for students are available at Fickes and Woodlands Halls on the beautiful campus of Chatham University as well as PBT’s own Byham House.

Chatham University is situated on 35 park-like acres in the Shadyside area of Pittsburgh and is one of the most idyllic locations in the city, located only 2.1 miles from PBT studios.

The Byham House occupies three floors in a historic 7,000-square-foot property located in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, less than one mile away from Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre studios. It originated as the rectory for what once was St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, immediately adjacent to the property.  The Byham House is a co-ed housing opportunity with separate floors and bathrooms for young men and women and can accommodate up to 20 students.

PITTSBURGH, PA –  Due to popular demand, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre announces the addition of a fifth performance of Moulin Rouge® — The Ballet, which makes its Pittsburgh premiere this Valentine’s Day at the Benedum Center.

Onstage Feb. 14-17, PBT has added a 2 p.m. matinee performance on Saturday, Feb. 16, to accommodate demand  throughout Valentine’s Day weekend for the most-talked-about show of the PBT season. PBT will perform Moulin Rouge® — The Ballet at the following times:

Experienced by more than 100,000 people across North America, Moulin Rouge®—The Ballet had its world premiere in 2009 at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. At the time of its premiere,  additional performances were required due to box office demand and the ballet soon became the RWB’s biggest box office success to date.

The iconic cabaret, high-kicking cancan and extravagant excesses of  turn-of-the-century Paris set the scene for a story of love, ambition and heartbreak in Moulin Rouge®—The Ballet. Drawn to Paris by the city’s passion, struggling artist Matthew and launderette-turned-performer Nathalie find themselves swept into a passionate romance and the intoxicating nightlife of the Moulin Rouge®.

Choreographer Jorden Morris, the creator behind PBT’s 2011 production of Peter Pan, laces contemporary and classical ballet with international influences from the vivacious French cancan to the fiery partnering of the Tango Café. The passion peaks with an intimate pas de deux set to  Debussy’s Claire de Lune on a bridge by the Eiffel Tower. The cabaret’s possessive proprietor Zidler, however, casts a shadow over their romance as he ensnares his newly-discovered performer and her lover in a dangerous love triangle.

A number of historic figures from the origins of the Moulin Rouge® also find roles in the ballet. French painter HenriToulouse-Lautrec, who immortalized the Moulin Rouge® with depictions of its performers, takes the role of Matthew’s mentor, and the cabaret’s co-founder Charles Zidler becomes Matthew’s adversary. 

With a score spanning 27 different works by 14 different composers — including some well-known titles such asClair de Lune, La Vie en Rose, or the Can-Can — Morris selected the majority of music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries during the rise of the Moulin Rouge®. 

Moulin Rouge® — The Ballet features more than 70 vibrantly-colored costumes, created by Anne Armit, Head of Wardrobe at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Shannon Lovelace, a freelance designer, who drew inspiration from the fashions of the era and from Toulouse-Lautrec’s paintings of the Moulin Rouge®. A luminous red windmill and Eiffel Tower  top the onstage scenery, designed by Andrew Beck. 

The Moulin Rouge® was co-founded  in 1889 — the same year the Eiffel Tower was constructed —by builder Joseph Oller and manager Charles Zidler in the Monmartre district of Paris. The cabaret’s iconic red windmill, and namesake, became a symbol of the city’s thriving nightlife. Today, among other performance requirements, all of the Moulin Rouge’s performers must possess a solid base in classical ballet training.
