2014–2015 PITTSBURGH DANCE COUNCIL SEASON

Pittsburgh, PA—  The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces single tickets go on sale, Friday, August 29, at 9AM, for the 2014–2015 Pittsburgh Dance Council season.  Pittsburgh Dance Council is a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.  All performances will take place at the Byham Theater located at 101 6th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

The 2014–2015 Pittsburgh Dance Council Season includes the following six performances.  Also, two special dance events presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust: Royal Ballet of Cambodia and Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host are additional recommendations to dance patrons.

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s bold vision focuses on presenting groundbreaking work from the world’s most exciting, emerging choreographers. Square None, the company’s first commission by Norbert De La Cruz III, is an ambitious and expansive piece that explores themes of youth and naiveté. The Aspen Times says, “It felt like a thrill, like a discovery of something new.”  Beautiful Mistake, a stunning piece by Spanish choreographer Cayetano Soto, expertly exhibits the gorgeous physicality of this incredible company through dynamic partnering. The newest work, Heart(s)pace by company-favorite Nicolo Fonte, gives audiences a distinctively unique experience as the stage glows with exuberant light and color. Influenced by love and compassion, this abstract piece illuminates the importance of touch.

The rebellious sensibilities of British dance iconoclast Michael Clark have catapulted him to the forefront of innovative contemporary dance. Fusing extreme elements of classical and punk, Michael Clark’s technical rigor and unabashed experimentation consistently breaks new ground to provoke and electrify audiences. Michael Clark’s critically-acclaimed work come, been and gone features the music of 1970s rock legends David Bowie and Iggy Pop. At once sensual and damaged, Clark’s masterpiece Swamp is drenched in exquisitely textured patterns of movement. Program contains partial nudity. Presented in partnership with the British Council.

Ronald K. Brown masterfully threads elements of African, modern, ballet and social styles, elevating dance as a medium to communicate the human experience. The Brooklyn-based company Evidence poignantly executes Brown’s signature vision of forging contemporary choreography rooted in the beauty of traditional African forms and rhythms. In the extraordinary work The Subtle One, set to the music of jazz musicians Jason Moran and Tarus Mateen, Brown transcends the human struggle and aspirations for connection between spiritual beings and mortals. In On Earth Together, Stevie Wonder’s music deepens Brown’s exploration of love and compassion and features dancers from the Pittsburgh community working alongside dancers from Evidence.

French Argentinean ensemble Union Tanguera brings the sensuality and art of tango to life with their original, stimulating interpretation of the social dance style reimagined for the stage. Featuring live music performed by one of Buenos Aires’s finest quartets, the French Argentinean ensemble of seven dancers presents savory, stylized dance theater with dramatic flair.  Set in a nameless nightclub at the end of a traditional tango show, Nuit Blanche illuminates the wanderings, desires, and fears that surface during one sleepless night—unveiling a seductive, late night world where dancers express themselves through intimate, uninhibited dance.

A rising star on the international dance scene, Swedish choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker Pontus Lidberg has created more than 35 works for major dance companies such as Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève, SemperOper Ballet Dresden, Morphoses, and his own company, Pontus Lidberg Dance. His brand-new work, Snow, is a turbulent choreographic composition set in a ceaseless snowfall. The choreography presents a poetic look at the fragile human reality of existence, in contrast to the relentless power of nature. Four world-class dancers, including Lidberg himself, will take the stage together with a lifelike, highly expressive Japanese-style Bunraku puppet to tell a dynamic and poetic story of human experience.

The iconic, heartbreaking tale of human frailty is set to a saucy, jazz-inspired score and aptly dressed in striking vintage-styled costumes. The retelling of Streetcar is exemplary of Scottish Ballet’s niche for re-imagining classic stories with fresh relevance for contemporary audiences.

Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, will present Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 8:00 p.m., at the Byham Theater.  Directed by Philippe Cohen, the Genève Ballet is known around the world for its exquisite choreography and exciting artistic collaborations.  The evening program will feature two works, Glory and Sed Lux Permanet.

Glory, choreographed by Andonis Foniadakis, allows the dancers’ bodies to come together in various modes of symbolism to the mastery and quality of Handel’s flamboyant music.  Sed Lux Permanet, choreographed by Ken Ossola, uses sculpted shadow play to enhance the delicate nature of the body set to the sensitive and ethereal sweetness of Fauré’s Requiem.

The Grand Théâtre has hosted some of the world's greatest ballet companies, notably Isadora Duncan, Nijinsky and the Ballets Russes. At its reopening in 1962, the Grand Théâtre created its own ballet company, The Grand Théâtre de Genève Ballet, under the successive management of Janine Charrat, Serge Golovine, Patricia Neary, Peter van Dyck, Oscar Araiz, Gradimir Pankov, François Passard and Giorgio Mancini.

From its beginnings, the company has been dedicated to performing various styles of dance and has worked with renowned artists such as George Balanchine, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nureyev, Jiri Kylian, Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe and Lucinda Childs. The company features twenty-two classically-trained dancers from around the world, performing in the neo-classical and contemporary styles. Each season features several new productions, repertoire performances at home, on tour, school productions and educational workshops. Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announced  Zimmermann & de Perrot, from Switzerland, will perform at the August Wilson Center, 980 Liberty Avenue, Downtown Pittsburgh in the Cultural District, their U.S. premiere of Hans was Heiri on Wednesday, October 16th, at 8:00 p.m, Thursday, October 17th, at 8:00 p.m. and Friday, October 18th at 8:00 p.m., as part of Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts*.

With a great deal of mischief but at the same time, anger and depth, the duo Zimmermann & de Perrot present a disconcertingly original marriage of theatre, circus and dance.  Supported by five circus artists and dancers, these two directors, have far exceeded all expectations in their new work.  Poets as well as magicians, they keep a piece overflowing with humor regulated to the nearest millimeter.  The stage design revolves on a horizontal axis and forces the performers into the most unlikely positions.  All this activity is set to a caustic story in Hans was Heiri.  Theirworks have  broken down barriers among the public to an extent rarely seen.

Martin Zimmerman born in Switzerland spent much of his life surrounded by the arts.  While attending Centre National des Arts du Cirque (C.N.A.C) in France he studied set design graduating with honors.  In Zurich 1998 he began to work as a choreographer and director.

Dmitri de Perrot born in Switzerland After matriculating from the Kunstgymnasium in Zurich he developed further as a self-taught musician and composer. In 1998 he turned his attention to the theater, and began to work as a director.

Zimmermann & de Perrot travel internationally, striking the world with artistically accomplished transformation of everyday interactions, giving the little things in life a big platform.  The Times raves “4 STARS. Boisterous, off-the-wall humour and fizzy, rollickingly good entertainment.”Total Theatre Review said “Zimmermann & de Perrot create absurd, surreal masterpieces of visual theatre.”

Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, brings you Compagnie Marie Chouinardon Saturday, September 28, 2013, at 8:00 p.m., at the Byham Theater.  Marie Chouinard and her Compagnie will open the Dance Council’s 2013-2014 season and launch the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts*, performing two U.S. premieres Michaux Mouvements and Gymnopedia.

Inspired by the book Movements, by Belgian artist Henri Michaux, Marie Chouinard creates dreamlike and interpretative dance using the poetics of the body in Michaux Movements.  The dancers form silhouette projections portraying the books India-ink drawings and poetry pieces.  Gymnopedia features eleven dancers with music set to the glorious piano pieces by Eric Satie.   Please note, these performances contain nudity.

Through a combination of movements and imagination, Montreal artist Marie Chouinard achieves an international reputation for originality preceding a twenty-eight year artistic dance career. From 1978-1990, Marie performed over fifty productions as a singular entity beginning her career with a solo piece known as Crystallization. In 1990, she formed the Compagnie which now consists of twelve dancers performing different pieces of interpretative and expressive dance. The Vancouver Sun writes that Marie Chouinard’s pieces, “felt like experiencing an event rather that watching a performance.  Marie Chouinard breaks boundaries….”

Marie Chouinard has been honored with opening and closing many art festivals that feature the company’s unique style of dance. She has collaborated with prestigious names in the art community including the Biennale de Venise, the ImPulsTanz-Vienna International Dance Festival, the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbonne, Movimentos Festwochender Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Fondazione Musica Per Roma in Rome, as well as Festival TransAmériques, the Place des Arts in Montreal, and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

The duo Zimmermann & de Perrot have crafted an original and mischievous marriage of theater, circus and dance. Poets as well as magicians, their choreography overflows with cunning depth and humor. In Hans was Heiri, the stage design revolves on a horizontal axis, forcing the performers into the most unlikely positions. All this is put at the service of a caustic story, which makes Hans was Heiri a work that breaks down barriers to an extent rarely seen.  Pittsburgh, PA:   Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, will present world renowned Mark Morris Dance Group at the Byham Theater, on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 8:00 p.m.

Mark Morris Dance Group will perform three works: “The Muir”, “Petrichor” and “The Festival Dance”. The Muir (premiered in June 27, 2010) features six dancers with various music and Ludwig van Beethoven’s arrangements to a collection of Irish and Scottish folk songs. Petrichor (premiered Oct. 14, 2010; title refers to the scent left behind after rain) features eight female dancers and is composed to a series of string quartets by composer Heitor Villa-Lobos.   The Festival Dance (premiered March 17, 2011) is performed by 12 dancers to Piano Trio No.5, a Bohemian folk dance work composed by Johann Nepomuk Hummel.  All three pieces were choreographed after the music had been chosen, a practice unique to Morris in all of his works.

Mark Morris

Mark Morris has spent his life surrounded by the arts. First he learned music then he learned dance, both of which he pursued passionately. After graduation he spent time in Europe studying the flamenco. Moving to New York City was a major step for Morris that gave him the opportunity to perform with various companies. These experiences allowed him to develop his own style, creating dances in a rented studio space until the founding of Mark Morris Dance Group in Brooklyn, New York in 1980.

Mark Morris is best known for his great accomplishments with his own dance company, his unique style begins with a score. Creating entire dances based on music might seem backwards but it is a technique that transforms the language of dance.  He has also worked with many ballet companies, and received eleven honorary doctorates. Along with these doctorates Mark Morris has received countless other awards recognizing his excellence including; the Benjamin Franklin Creativity Laureate Award in 2012 and in 2010 received the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society.

One reporter, Gia Kourlas, for The New York Times pointed out, "That Mr. Morris reveals his musical sophistication through barefoot modern dancing is what gives his choreography such primal elegance. Mark Morris Dance Group travels internationally, striking the world with their melodic moves. Working only with live accompaniment in practice and performance MMDG strives to fully incorporate the human element into each work they produce. In 1988 MMDG was asked to travel to Belgium’s Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels in order to accept a three-year residence as the national dance company.

Since accepting this honor and completing the residency, Mark Morris Dance Group has returned to New York where they continue to create innovations in modern dance. Morris has created over 130 works for his dance group. With an extensive repertoire this company is not only inventing new works but reinventing their previous dances! A performance by the MMDG can promise a unique expression of human dance, accompanied by live music, and humorous innuendoes to lighten the mood.

Pittsburgh, PA: The Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, brings you the legendary dance company Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo Friday, April 5, 2013 at the Byham Theater at 8:00 p.m.

Who knew testosterone and tutus could combine to create a comical and methodical critique of dance? Over thirty-five years ago in hopes of incorporating some entertainment and excitement into the dance world, these New York men grabbed their Pointe ballet slippers and went to work.  Men from all over the world make up this diverse Russian-style ballet company, and each of them has donned a clever female alias as their stage persona. The men dance parodies of classic ballets as well as more modern compositions; creating a satire on the rigid standards that serious dancers are being held to.

“The Trocks,” as they have affectionately become known, have been winning over audiences with their charismatic shows from the beginning. Stemming from recognition in publications The Trocks have performed venues internationally, at dance festivals, on television shows, they have even been the subject of several television specials and documentaries. Comedy creates happiness, and the comedy created by The Trocks transcends culture, age, and even knowledge of dance.

Bringing ballet to new and diverse audiences, “The Trocks are a guaranteed hoot for people who know nothing of ballet and an absolute must for those who think they know the originals,” according to theSydney Star Observer.
