NCCC Spruces Up Brownsville

Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation
P.O. Box 97, 69 Market Street
Brownsville, PA 15417

Press Release:  August 30, 2012

Brownsville will get a fresh new look this September when the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) comes to town for the second time. A team of eight corps members worked for two weeks in the spring, and the new team will be in town for at least four weeks to finish the job.

The first team painted buildings, cleared plant overgrowth, removed rubble from the Market St. parking lot and rebuilt a wall near the Flatiron Building.

“These kids can do anything.” said James Carroll, who supervised the first team and will coordinate the activities of the incoming team. Carroll wants to ensure that the work of the NCCC team impacts the whole community and makes citizens proud of the town.

The team will be performing a vast range of tasks, such as landscaping, litter control, work with the Garden Club, and general improvements to the town square.

NCCC teams serve in communities in need throughout the United States with a wide variety of direct service capabilities. NCCC is a division of Americorps, and their time in Brownsville will be sponsored by BARC.

The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh launched the Tribute to Women Leadership Awards in 1983 to affirm its mission to empower women and girls to reach their personal and professional goals. Since then, the YWCA has honored the accomplishments of more than 200 exceptional women, saluting them for helping to shape the direction of our region and improve the lives of others.

This year’s awards will highlight women in the following categories: Arts & Culture, Business & Industry, Civic & Community Service, Education, Entrepreneur, Health & Human Services, Professional Services, and Science & Technology. Besides these eight award categories, the YWCA has added a Young Leader award category this year to honor a young woman between 25 and 40 years of age who has demonstrated exceptional leadership early in her career. BARC Launches New Retail Concept to Revitalize Community

New Artists, Crafters Co-Op Launches

Holiday Pop-Up Shop in Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE, Pa. – With the holiday shopping season at hand, a retail pop-up shop will open this week in Brownsville, simultaneously test driving the concept in the downtown and gauging consumer support for a permanent or seasonal artists and crafters co-op.

Nonna's Trunk is launching Thursday and will run through Dec. 30 in the Taylor Building, 200 Bank St. To date, shop manager Blanche Booker of East Millsboro has assembled 11 vendors, a well-rounded mix of antiques, collectibles and handmade crafts. The merchandise includes dolls, jewelry, original paintings on china, woodcrafts, stained glass and home-made truffles in addition to an eclectic assortment of vintage treasures.

"It will be welcoming like a gift shop," says Booker, who is volunteering to get the shop off the ground for the building owner, Brownsville Area Revitalization Corp. Nonna's Trunk will occupy the entire 1,200-square-foot first floor of the Taylor Building, taking occupancy to 100% for the holiday season.

Nonna's Trunk begins with a soft opening this Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The shop will be closed Thanksgiving Day.

Grand opening weekend will get under way Nov. 25, coinciding with Brownsville's annual Light-Up Night. The shop will maintain its regular hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the grand opening.

Nonna's Trunk has scheduled two special events during its run to stimulate interest in the new shop. Free antique appraisals will be held Nov. 26 from noon to 3 p.m. by John Mikita, a Brownsville native and owner of Mikita Auction Co, who is volunteering his time for the cause.

Dec. 3 will feature quality time with Santa from noon to 5 p.m., including a special children's craft project as a memento of the visit. Old Saint Nick is volunteering too.

Retail pop-up concepts are commonplace at lifestyle centers and regional malls as seasonal attractions for specialty shops. It's also a low-risk avenue for entrepreneurs to test their merchandise in the marketplace and building owners to fill vacant spaces on a temporary basis, often leading to a more permanent arrangement if the shop is successful.

For Booker, it's more personal. "Christmas is a season of giving so it's fitting that I and others are giving our time to launch Nonna's Trunk," she says. "Our holiday wish is it will be successful enough to open on a seasonal or permanent basis and encourage more entrepreneurs to open shops in Brownsville."

Debbie Slocum Recognized as Dignity and Respect Champion for
Embracing the Philosophy of the D&R Campaign

Personnel Analyst at Allegheny County Department of Human Services
Advances Inclusion in Her Daily Work and Life

(PITTSBURGH, PA) August 18, 2011– Debbie Slocum spends a lot of quality time with people who work at the Department of Human Services. With each encounter, she is consistent in doing the little things to show them respect.

“We do not make a big noise [about our Dignity & Respect Campaign], and maybe that’s a good thing. It is one person at a time. One more person saying thank you today than yesterday,” Debbie said.

Nominated by Brendan Hanschen, Debbie was selected as the August Dignity & Respect Champion for promoting dignity and respect in her everyday life, as well as at her job at the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.

“Debbie seizes every opportunity to include dignified and respectful treatment of her colleagues. She has been the driving force of the Dignity & Respect campaign in the Department of Human Services, and has truly shown herself to be a champion in every way,” Brendan said.

Debbie is a resident of Penn Hills and has been working at the Allegheny County Department of Human Services for almost six years as a personnel analyst, a job she continues to find rewarding.

“I get to know what people’s concerns are, what their job is, and what they need. I try to find out how I can help them, and give them what I have to offer. When someone leaves having enjoyed my class, I am rewarded.”

Debbie thinks that it is important to treat each other with respect because it would make everyone feel appreciated and recognized, and brings the community together.

“We are all so much alike, but we just dwell on our differences. I think we’ve become isolated, and it is time to do something to bring back a sense of community. We are all going through stress and we all have problems, but if we can just say hello in the elevator, or smile, we might just make someone’s day better,” Debbie said.

The Dignity & Respect Campaign is an awareness campaign designed to join individuals, community leaders, community organizations, educational institutions, businesses, and corporations under the common notion that everyone deserves dignity and respect.

SBA honors community director for outreach efforts, economic growth and social acceptance

PITTSBURGH – Throughout his four-decade career in community development as director of diversity affairs and community outreach for the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Pittsburgh, Charles Powell never lost sight of his target: to work constructively on behalf of the region’s minority community.

For his efforts, Powell will be honored May 27th as the Western Pennsylvania Minority Small Business Champion of the Year at SBA’s Western Pennsylvania Awards Luncheon. Eight other local small business owners and advocates will be honored at the luncheon, which is held at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel Pittsburgh, in conjunction with the 48th annual celebration of National Small Business Week in Washington, D.C.

In the past 20 years, Powell has been instrumental in leveraging more than $500 million contract dollars for women and minority businesses.

“We [the URA] are the economic engine for this city and my role centers on training and community outreach,” Powell said. Powell explained his work is judged by the many communities within the city of Pittsburgh and that most organizations would give him an “A grade.”

“At the recent Target development site in East Liberty, the mayor and URA board established a minority contracting goal of 25 percent,” he explained. “But, through our outreach and compliance, that project saw 42 percent of contracts and subcontracts awarded to women and minority firms.” Growing up in McDonald, Pa., Powell attended Virginia Union University where he majored in psychology and entered the workforce just as America was embracing the Great Society.

“The Great Society was an introduction to a national emphasis to provide support to communities for education to embrace and deal with changes in social thinking,” Powell explained. “The jobs provided decent wages and the government was looking for people with a background in psychology and sociology.” He started his community relations career with the Greater Pittsburgh Dairy Association, where he was responsible for educating the area’s 26 local dairies on integration and the importance of hiring African-Americans as dairy workers and truck drivers.

“I received strong support and a lot of publicity because we [the association] wanted people to know that our goal was to integrate the Western Pennsylvania dairy industry,” Powell stated.

However, one day, he noticed a large group outside of the former Mellon Bank headquarters in downtown Pittsburgh protesting the bank to hire African-Americans.

“I was recommended to Mellon to assist their efforts and stayed there for 20 years where I increased my responsibilities, first in employee relations and finally moved to corporate affairs where I became a vice president,” he added.

When Mellon shifted its focus to investment banking, Powell transferred his skills to the URA and to the community.

He was appointed by former Gov. Rendell to the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Board and also serves on the board for the Salvation Army. While Powell certainly is pleased at his civic contributions over the last 40 years, he is most proud of being a founding member of Pittsburgh’s African-American Chamber of Commerce and being invited to a 2007 National Security Seminar at the U.S. Army’s War College in Carlisle, Pa.

“I wasn’t a veteran and someone nominated me and I was selected and that was special,” he said. “So was the 1992 creation of the African American chamber by a small group of visionaries.”

According to Western Pennsylvania SBA District Director Carl Knoblock, Powell serves as an example of how government leaders can strive for community involvement and betterment. “He has given so much back to neighborhood small businesses through his leadership and commitment. He truly is an asset.”

Powell said he was overjoyed to be recognized by the SBA, which has a mission parallel to that of the URA.

“Being involved with small business is a great mission because we help the economy grow; it’s a great honor to be acknowledged.”

Note: If you would like to speak with Charles Powell or Carl Knoblock, Western Pennsylvania SBA district director, please contact Janet Heyl at 412-395-6560, ext. 103
