Cast of Characters at 709 Penn Gallery

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:   REVISION #2
Today's date: March 26, 2013

Cast of Characters
curated by Vicky Clark and Cindy Lisica
709 Penn Gallery
709 Penn Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District
April 5-May 17, 2013

Pittsburgh, PA:  In Cast of Characters, curators Vicky Clark and Cindy Lisica bring together six diverse artists with character-driven work to question the nature of our everyday existence and our relationship to larger-than-life heroes and gods.  Characters’ stories combine through humor, insight, passion and intellect, causing us to contemplate our world and question our place within it.

The artists featured in this exhibition move from recognizable characters to ones they have created themselves.  While the narratives are, at times, very serious, the approach is fun, colorful, and imaginative as the artists communicate both personal and shared concerns.  The heads and figures of FriendsWithYou, Mr. Glaubitz, and Jeff Schwarz literally and metaphorically speak to issues of identity and the human experience.  Janet Towbin and Rei Sato use small scales to approach big issues, and power and identity are brought to the forefront with the graphic characters and costumes of Mr. Glaubitz and Mark Newport.

Bird Mouth Sculpture by Jeff Schwarz
Using the visual language of comics, punk, youth or street culture, the artists explore and present the familiar within their own situations. The resulting connectivity and commonalities invite the audience to view and experience a range of sensations by entering an active dialogue.

Participating artists include:  Mr. Glaubitz (Tijuana), Mark Newport (Detroit), Rei Sato (Tokyo and Taipei), Jeff Schwarz (Brooklyn), and Janet Towbin (Phoenix) and FriendsWithYou (Los Angeles).

A full color illustrated catalog with essays by Cindy Lisica and forward by Vicky A Clark has been published on the occasion of the exhibition.

Sandra Bernhard
Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Byham Theater

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents
Sandra Bernhard
Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 8:00 p.m., Byham Theater

Pittsburgh, PA- The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is proud to present the comedian, singer, actress, and author Sandra Bernhard on April 27, 2013 at the Byham Theater.  Bernhard’s performance is a hybrid of standup comedy and rock ‘n roll – a unique mixture of political satire, pop culture commentary and cabaret.  Bernhard’s bitter critiques of celebrity culture have earned her a spot on Comedy Central’s famous “100 Greatest Standups of All Time.” This performance is a part of the 2012-2013 Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series.

Sandra Bernhard began her career at L.A.’s famed Comedy Store in the ‘70s, which earned her a supporting role on The Richard Pryor Show in 1977.  Bernhard caught her big break in 1983 when she caught the nation’s attention as the star of Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy. Her first one-woman show, the groundbreaking Without You I’m Nothing, ran for 6 months off-Broadway in 1988 and served as inspiration for the film and Grammy-nominated album of the same name.

Bernhard’s extensive resume spans nearly the entire entertainment industry. From 1991-1996 Bernhard played Nancy Bartlett—the first openly gay character on a network sitcom—on Roseanne, and further bolstered her television resume with her work on  The Richard Pryor Show, Law & Order: SVU, The Sopranos, and Ally McBeal. She has appeared more than 30 times on Late Night with David Letterman and has been a regular guest of Howard Stern’s since the early ‘80s.

Additionally, Bernhard’s film credits include Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy, for which she was awarded Best Supporting Actress by the National Society of Film Critics, and Nicholas Roeg’s Track 29, Hudson Hawk, Dinner Rush, and Dare. Further bolstering her performance skills, Bernhard has released a number of popular albums and has also sung with or opened for various musical acts, including: The Pretenders, Cyndi Lauper, and the Scissor Sisters.

Her most recent show, I Love Being Me, Don’t You? played to sold-out crowds for an extended run last summer in Los Angeles and the album version of the show was released on Rooftop Records last fall. Bernhard has been touring the show ever since, and the Los Angeles Times wrote, “She has chutzpah to spare, but it’s her articulate intelligence that earns our attention … It’s [her] combination of glamour and accessibility that accounts for Bernhard’s enduring appeal.”

Tickets ($35-$40) for Sandra Bernhard on April 27, 2013 at 8:00 p.m., at the Byham Theater, may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square, 655 Penn Avenue, online at trustarts.org, or by calling (412) 456-6666. To purchase 10 or more tickets at special discounted rates, please call (412) 471-6930.

Thursday, March 21
 • Bach’s Birthday

Sunday March 24 (Palm Sunday)
 • Sunday Baroque
 7 – 11 a.m.
George Frideric Handel's oratorio Israel in Egypt was at first criticized as being "too solemn for common ears," but over time it has come to be considered one of Handel's masterpieces. Spirited, grand and hopeful selections from Handel's sacred oratorio will be featured on Sunday Baroque.
 • 4 – 6 p.m.
For Palm Sunday, WQED-FM 89.3 presents Handel’s St. John Passion, Bach’s Cantata for Palm Sunday, Allegri’s Miserere and more hosted by Anna Singer.

This one hour program features familiar classical music, along with more obscure classical. There are also traditional tunes like "Dayenu," "Chad Gadya," and "Go Down, Moses.” Along with the music, Itzhak Perlman shares personal stories about Passover, tells a few jokes, and even sings a little. And of course, he plays the violin, including the theme to Schindler's List -- you'll hear how he relates that to the Passover story.

Friday March 29
 • St. Matthew’s Passion (Good Friday)
Noon – 3 p.m.
Handel and Haydn Society perform Bach’s St. Matthew Passion directed by Harry Christophers. This masterpiece combines the sounds of a double orchestra, a double choir, and a chorus of soloists to tell the story of Christ’s crucifixion from different characters’ perspectives hosted by Classical New England’s Brian McCreath and Cathy Fuller.

Sunday March 31 (Easter Sunday)
 • Sunday Baroque
 7 – 11 a.m.
Easter is a celebration of renewal and peace, and many musicians have honored that theme in their compositions. Easter selections from George Frideric Handel’s oratorio MESSIAH and Heinrich Biber’s contemplative Sonatas on the biblical mysteries are just some of the glorious music on Sunday Baroque to refresh and renew your spirit.

 • Rachmaninoff’s Vespers

PBT School Student Advances to Final Round of Youth America Grand Prix

PITTSBURGH, PA (March 2013) –  After receiving multiple awards at the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) semifinals this weekend, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School student Sophie Silnicki, 16, will advance to the final round of the international student ballet competition from April 12-17, in New York City.

Silnicki’s performance at the YAGP Semi-Finals – held March 8-10, 2013 in Indianapolis – earned her first place in the Contemporary Category and third place in the Classical Category for the Senior Division, which included 177 competitors from the United States and abroad of the 15-19 year-old age range. Silnicki’s winning solos included Gone, a contemporary piece choreographed by Adrienne Canterna (1st Place) and the variation from Raymonda Act II (3rd Place) for her classical piece.

Sophie Silnicki

The 2013 YAGP marks Silnicki’s sixth consecutive year performing in the competition. In 2012, Silnicki received the Grand Prize in the Junior Division of the Semi-Finals in Torrington, CT, with top awards for both her Classical and Contemporary Solos. This April, Sophie will go on to compete in the finals competition from April 12-17, at the Jack H. Skirball Center for Performing Arts in New York City.

Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) is the world’s largest student ballet scholarship competition and annually awards more than $250,000 in scholarships to leading dance schools worldwide. The competition is held annually around the world and in New York City, and is open to dance students of all nationalities from 9-19 years old. Launched in 1999 by two former dancers of the world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet, Larissa and Gennadi Saveliev, YAGP is also a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization created with a mission to provide extraordinary educational and professional opportunities to young dancers, acting as a stepping stone to a professional dance career, according to the YACP website.
“The Youth America Grand Prix brings together the most accomplished students from the across the country and abroad, so we are extremely proud that Sophie has been recognized so highly among her peers. These awards speak to the remarkable artistry, discipline and commitment that we see Sophie dedicate every day to her ballet training,” said PBT School Director Marjorie Grundvig.

Silnicki has trained with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School for four years under the direction of School Directors Marjorie Grundvig and Dennis Marshall. Prior to enrolling at PBT School, Silnicki trained at the dance studio of her mother, Stephanie Lopez, where she continues to dance regularly.  A full-time student in PBT School’s High School Division, Silnicki has been featured in PBT company productions, including The Nutcracker, as well as PBT School’s annual spring performances.

Now in its 14th Season, YAGP has awarded over $2 million in scholarships to the leading dance schools worldwide. Over 25,000 dancers worldwide have participated in YAGP’s international workshops, competitions, and audition classes. Over 300 YAGP alumni are now dancing with 50 companies around the world, including American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, among others. YAGP’s contributions to international dance education were recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with a membership in UNESCO’s prestigious Conseil International de la Danse (CID).For more information, please visit www.yagp.org.

Hosanna House Celebrates Anniversary of Mission

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hosanna industries to celebrate nearly $50 million of charitable work

Local Nonprofit Mission Celebrates 23 Years of Service on Palm Sunday

NEW SEWICKLEY, PA- On Palm Sunday 23 years ago, Hosanna Industries was founded. Three mission workers, a used donated pickup truck, and a budget of $30 thousand allowed for 13 projects completed that first year. Now, starting its 24th year, Hosanna Industries has done nearly $50 million of charitable construction work for a cost of less than $14 million.

"We are profoundly grateful for the many ways in which the Lord has used the gifts, skills, and generosity of so many people in our world to allow us privilege of helping those in need during the past 23 years," says Reverend Dr. Donn D. Ed, executive director of the mission.

On Palm Sunday, March 24th, at four thirty in the afternoon, Hosanna will host a short service in the Morledge Chapel on their campus in New Sewickley Township. Here, the 10 full-time mission workers will be recommissioned for service to the needy, like many of them have done for multiple years in a row now. Afterward, the Community Center on Hosanna's campus will be dedicated to the Glory of God in memory of Bob and Bernie Kennedy, with an informal reception to follow.

In the past 23 years, many lives have been changed by Hosanna Industries. Over 2500 impoverished homeowners have been helped with free home repairs, over 150 houses have been built for those in need, 143 mission workers and over 150,000 volunteers have learned the construction trades and the benefits of providing hope. Two and a half million miles have been travelled, and over 50,000 tons of materials have been used, while approximately 10 former mission workers are now running their own companies with training that they received from Hosanna Industries. Countless individuals, churches, businesses, and foundations have provided for the success of the mission.

About Hosanna Industries: Hosanna Industries, Inc. is a faith-rooted, 501 (c)3 non-profit organization in southwestern Pennsylvania that was founded in 1990. The mission includes new construction and repair/rehabilitation services for low income homeowners; leading volunteers in disaster recovery; and training young people in the trade skills to give them a hope for the future. Their typical single client household in 2012 had an income of less than $13 thousand a year. Hosanna Industries depends on the generosity of others to complete their work. Orchestra, Ballet Performance of Cinderella

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Presents Cinderella with Live
Orchestra April 19-21 at the Benedum Center in 12-13 Season Finale

(Pittsburgh, PA) – Brimming with enchantment, romance and comedy, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre presents the classic story of Cinderella onstage with the PBT Orchestra April 19-21 at the Benedum Center, in PBT’s 2012-2013 Season finale.

Set to Prokofiev’s grand score and the choreography of Washington Ballet’s Septime Webre, Cinderella stages a spellbinding spectacle with elaborate costumes, classical choreography and distinctive set design. Reimagined across cultures, ages and art forms, Webre’s adaptation of Cinderella roots the timeless fairy tale in honest human emotions of love and longing to match the depth of Prokofiev’s score.
In addition to PBT company dancers, approximately 20 children from Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School will dance the roles of enchanted garden creatures, including bumblebees, snow angels, butterflies and other whimsical roles brought to life by Cinderella’s fairy godmother. From  the enchanted pointe shoes to the show-stopping stepsisters, PBT’s Cinderella takes many unexpected twists on this time-honored tale.

Character Transformations: Cinderella….& Her Stepsisters
Following a garden visitation from her fairy godmother — accompanied by fairies of the four seasons— Cinderella transforms from rags to finery to make her mysterious debut at the ball. Behind the scenes, however, the most dramatic transformation occurs for the male dancers cast as Cinderella’s stepsisters. Webre’s Cinderella plays on the theater and ballet tradition of dancing “en travesti,” using a comic gender role reversal to characterize the jealous duo with clownish antics. Costumed in voluminous hoopskirts and garish makeup and wigs, these male dancers add a generous dash of humor to the production.

The Perfect Pointe Shoe
Rather than the typical glass slippers, PBT’s Cinderella dons a pair of dazzling pointe shoes for the ball, leaving her Prince to search all over the world for the maiden who matches her forgotten slipper. In the reality of a professional ballerina, finding the perfect pointe shoe fit is a Cinderella story unto itself. Choosing pointe shoes is an extremely individualized and detailed task to find the fit that offers ultimate foot flexibility, balance and support. At PBT, most ballerinas dance through an average of 75 pairs of pointe shoes each season, and spend countless hours darning, breaking in and padding their shoes for the best fit and  comfort level.  Most pointe shoes are hand-made, and PBT dancers may choose up to 10 style customizations when ordering.  So, whether it’s the Spanish or Tunisian dancer that the Prince visits in Act II, it’s truly unlikely that Cinderella’s pointe shoes would ever fit another ballerina.

Set & Costume Design
Theoretically set in “a faraway kingdom,” the set of Cinderella draws influences from the mid-to-late 18th century prior to the French Revolution. The fairy tale is brought to life through James Kronzer’s set designs, which include Cinderella’s kitchen, a garden full of dancing creatures and flowers, a wintery forest, and a gilded grand ballroom lined with mirrors that multiply the swirling skirts and partnering of the courtesans. At midnight, Kronzer creates a striking vision on stage when clock faces of various sizes fill the ballroom, alerting Cinderella that her gown will soon return to rags. Judanna Lynn’s costume designs showcase the elaborate court dress and powdered wigs of the era as well as Cinderella's ragamuffin dresses and the stepsisters’ humorous frocks.

Music
Considered one of ballet’s most brilliant scores, Prokofiev’s Cinderella score premiered in 1945 with the Bolshoi Ballet, and echoes Cinderella’s inner emotions as well as a variety of unique themes for different characters. Of his approach to the score, Prokofiev wrote of his attempt to "convey the poetic love between Cinderella and the Prince – the birth and flowing of feeling, the obstacles thrown in its path, the realization of the dream...to create a fairy tale to serve merely as a setting for the portrayal of flesh-and-blood human beings with human passions and failings."

Tickets
Tickets for Cinderella start at $25.75 and are available for purchase online at www.pbt.org, by calling412-456-6666 or visiting the Box Office at Theater Square in the Cultural District.

With the win over the second-seeded Rams (21-7), the sixth-seeded Rock improved their season record to 23-8 and matched the school record shared by three previous teams for single-season wins.

Most importantly, the Green and White earned a berth in Sunday’s 5 p.m. second-round game, in which they will meet Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival Indiana U. of Pa. for the fourth time this season.

Third-seeded IUP (25-5), winners of two of the three previous meetings with SRU this winter and the No. 10 team in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Division II national ranking, advanced to Sunday’s action with a 76-68 win over conference rival East Stroudsburg, the No. 6 seed, in Saturday’s first opening-round game.

Junior swingman Tabari Perry drove the left  baseline and scored off an assist from junior guard Sa’Quan Davis with 2.6 seconds left to play to account for the winning points in The Rock’s win Saturday.

Perry then put the exclamation point on the win when he blocked a last-second jump shot by Winston-Salem State standout Justin Glover and grabbed the loose ball as the final horn sounded.

Devin Taylor

Senior forward Devin Taylor recorded game-high totals of 27 points and 15 rebounds to lead The Rock attack, while both Perry and senior forward Gerald Brooks finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds.

and hit 13 of 21 (62%) free throws.
