Hosanna Industries bringing hope to Homewood

Local Nonprofit Mission to Lead Volunteers in Five Day Blitz

PITTSBURGH, PA- During the week of August 12 through August 16, Hosanna Industries will lead over 100 volunteers to "blitz build" a house in the Homewood community of Pittsburgh. Hosanna Industries' "blitz builds" are made possible with volunteer labor, donated and discounted materials and a uniquely organized building method which compresses the average length of construction to less than five days . This rehab blitz will include a complete interior renovation of all three floors and the basement. Floors will be resurfaced, plaster repaired, plumbing upgraded, electrical retrofitted, walls painted, and new kitchens and bathrooms installed.

The renovated home will become an at-risk youth center and a vital part of the Homewood Renaissance Association. The house, located on Idlewild Street, is intended to be a safe haven for children in the Homewood community. Homewood Renaissance plans to have many programs in this rehabilitated facility, including after school homework help and meals.

The Hosanna staff, made up of nine women and three men, is experienced and skilled in construction. They will lead over 100 volunteers who are mostly unskilled in the construction trades. Many of the volunteers for this project will be from Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church.

Some of the workers during this week are a part of Hosanna Industries' Trade Skill Learning Center. The students, mostly from Homewood, started learning the construction trades in January at Hosanna's campus. The program in total is three years long with a graduation goal to produce responsible professional builders. The students are also a part of the Homewood Renaissance's "All 4 Life" multi-faceted program.

The house will be dedicated with a short ceremony on Friday, August 16 at noon. At that time, visitors are welcome to tour the completed house.

Hosanna industries to celebrate nearly $50 million of charitable work

Local Nonprofit Mission Celebrates 23 Years of Service on Palm Sunday

NEW SEWICKLEY, PA- On Palm Sunday 23 years ago, Hosanna Industries was founded. Three mission workers, a used donated pickup truck, and a budget of $30 thousand allowed for 13 projects completed that first year. Now, starting its 24th year, Hosanna Industries has done nearly $50 million of charitable construction work for a cost of less than $14 million.

"We are profoundly grateful for the many ways in which the Lord has used the gifts, skills, and generosity of so many people in our world to allow us privilege of helping those in need during the past 23 years," says Reverend Dr. Donn D. Ed, executive director of the mission.

On Palm Sunday, March 24th, at four thirty in the afternoon, Hosanna will host a short service in the Morledge Chapel on their campus in New Sewickley Township. Here, the 10 full-time mission workers will be recommissioned for service to the needy, like many of them have done for multiple years in a row now. Afterward, the Community Center on Hosanna's campus will be dedicated to the Glory of God in memory of Bob and Bernie Kennedy, with an informal reception to follow.

In the past 23 years, many lives have been changed by Hosanna Industries. Over 2500 impoverished homeowners have been helped with free home repairs, over 150 houses have been built for those in need, 143 mission workers and over 150,000 volunteers have learned the construction trades and the benefits of providing hope. Two and a half million miles have been travelled, and over 50,000 tons of materials have been used, while approximately 10 former mission workers are now running their own companies with training that they received from Hosanna Industries. Countless individuals, churches, businesses, and foundations have provided for the success of the mission.

Hosanna Industries to Teach Much Needed Trade Skills

Trade Skills, Business Ethics, and Entrepreneurship Taught by Local Nonprofit Mission

NEW SEWICKLEY, PA- Hosanna Industries, Inc. has recognized the need for vocational training, and is excited to meet the needs of young people in the community by providing them with a practical learning experience. The Terrell Trade Skill Learning Center is very relevant to what Hosanna has always done in that they constantly train unskilled volunteers to do meaningful work.

"The mission is being guided on an amazing path," says Reverend Dr. Donn D. Ed, Executive Director of Hosanna Industries. "It is becoming increasingly well-known in our region and throughout the nation, that there is a mounting and severe lack of skilled labor in the American workforce. We see an impending crisis developing in which work will need to be done and few people will be available with the proper skills needed to accomplish that work. We want to have a positive impact upon that impending development by training and acclimating unskilled young people in our area toward this opportunity that can have a great and positive impact upon the American culture and upon their individual vocational pathways."

Nine students, eight of which are from Homewood in Pittsburgh, are enrolled in classes which started this month. Classes meet three times a week for ten weeks per semester. The whole program is designed to be three years in length and promises to produce the most knowledgeable and highly trained skilled new labor pool in our area complete with a solid understanding of professionalism, appropriate behaviors and decorum in the workplace, and a rigorous work ethic.

This first semester they are learning nomenclature, what a builder is, basic building principles, tools, and framing. Each semester from then on has a different focus including but not limited to drywall, electrical, roofing, masonry, flooring, plumbing, and running your own contracting business.

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn," said Benjamin Franklin. The students attend class from 9-12pm in the classroom setting, and then from 1-3pm in practical instruction using the tools that Hosanna has provided them.

The trade skill learning center program is being run by Hosanna's Executive Director and mission workers. The other work of Hosanna including the rehab program for local impoverished homeowners, construction of affordable homes, and disaster relief, will continue.

The Terrell Trade Skill Learning Center is located on Hosanna's campus in New Sewickley Township. The facility will also house industrial and visual art classes for homeschooled students, Saturday seminars to teach basic home maintenance, and training opportunities for church mission trips.
