PROGRAMS ON CLASSICAL WQED-FM 89.3 THIS MARCH & APRIL
PITTSBURGH—Classical WQED-FM 89.3 will broadcast several Easter, Passover and Holocaust Remembrance specials this March and April.
Thursday, March 21
• Bach’s Birthday
8-10 p.m.
Music of the Baroque, the Midwest’s largest professional chorus and orchestra specializing in the performance of sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth century music, presents Bach’s B minor Mass. Conducted by Jane Glover, the performance includes soloists Yulia Van Doren, soprano; Krisztina Szabó, mezzo-soprano; Lawrence Wiliford, tenor; Stephen Powell, baritone and the Music of the Baroque Chorus and Orchestra.
Sunday March 24 (Palm Sunday)
• Sunday Baroque
7 – 11 a.m.
George Frideric Handel's oratorio Israel in Egypt was at first criticized as being "too solemn for common ears," but over time it has come to be considered one of Handel's masterpieces. Spirited, grand and hopeful selections from Handel's sacred oratorio will be featured on Sunday Baroque.
• 4 – 6 p.m.
For Palm Sunday, WQED-FM 89.3 presents Handel’s St. John Passion, Bach’s Cantata for Palm Sunday, Allegri’s Miserere and more hosted by Anna Singer.
Tuesday March 26
• The Western Wind’s Passover Story
9 – 10 p.m.
Theodore Bikel and the Western Wind Vocal Ensemble team up to tell and sing the Passover Story.
Thursday March 28
• A Musical Feast for Passover with Itzhak Perlman
9 – 10 p.m.
This one hour program features familiar classical music, along with more obscure classical. There are also traditional tunes like "Dayenu," "Chad Gadya," and "Go Down, Moses.” Along with the music, Itzhak Perlman shares personal stories about Passover, tells a few jokes, and even sings a little. And of course, he plays the violin, including the theme to Schindler's List -- you'll hear how he relates that to the Passover story.
Friday March 29
• St. Matthew’s Passion (Good Friday)
Noon – 3 p.m.
Handel and Haydn Society perform Bach’s St. Matthew Passion directed by Harry Christophers. This masterpiece combines the sounds of a double orchestra, a double choir, and a chorus of soloists to tell the story of Christ’s crucifixion from different characters’ perspectives hosted by Classical New England’s Brian McCreath and Cathy Fuller.
Sunday March 31 (Easter Sunday)
• Sunday Baroque
7 – 11 a.m.
Easter is a celebration of renewal and peace, and many musicians have honored that theme in their compositions. Easter selections from George Frideric Handel’s oratorio MESSIAH and Heinrich Biber’s contemplative Sonatas on the biblical mysteries are just some of the glorious music on Sunday Baroque to refresh and renew your spirit.
• Rachmaninoff’s Vespers
11 a.m. – Noon
WQED-FM 89.3 welcomes Easter Sunday with a performance of Rachmaninoff’s “Vespers,” featuring The Mendelssohn Choir directed by Robert Page.
Monday April 8th (Holocaust Remembrance Day)
• A Voice for the Silenced
7 – 8 p.m.
In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Monika Vischer and conductor James Conlon explore how music and culture thrived in the most desperate of times at the Terezin concentration camp.
• Yom Hashoah
8 – 10 p.m.
The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leon Botstein, in a Yom Hashoah concert. Hear Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes, the Concerto for Orchestra in Seven Parts by Isaac Schwartz, and Julia Zilberquit performs the Jewish Rhapsody for Piano, Flute, Strings and Percussion by Nicolas Slonimsky.
