Point Park University-produced documentary series ‘The Chair’ will begin Sept. 6 on Starz

The 10-episode series will air at 10 p.m., Saturdays; follows competing film directors making 2 movies, ‘Not Cool’ and ‘Hollidaysburg’

PITTSBURGH – The Point Park University-produced documentary series, “The Chair,” will begin airing on Saturday, Sept. 6, on STARZ as the channel’s first original unscripted series.

The 10-episode series will air at 10 p.m., on Saturdays.

Created by veteran Hollywood producer Chris Moore, “The Chair” is a STARZ original filmmaking experiment that follows two first-time directors, Shane Dawson and Anna Martemucci, as they compete to make two separate feature films from the same script, “How Soon Is Now?”

“The Chair” will document the creation, marketing and theatrical release of both films - “Hollidaysburg” directed by Martemucci, who grew up in State College and attended Penn State, and “Not Cool,” directed by Dawson. Through multiplatform voting, viewers will ultimately determine which director will be awarded $250,000. Both films will also air on STARZ.

More than 100 Point Park students and alumni from a variety of majors supported the TV series and two feature films as interns, employees, and through class projects. Additionally, production offices were located on Point Park University’s campus in downtown Pittsburgh.

“Point Park University is proud to be a partner on ‘The Chair,’ and we are excited for Starz viewers to see a finished product that employed a number of University students and alumni,” said Paul Hennigan, president of Point Park. “This project acts as an economic driver and incubator for original entertainment that boosts the local economy while giving our students the kind of experience they need to thrive in the real world.”

The University plans to hold weekly screening parties of “The Chair” on campus.

“We are excited that the start of the show coincides with the start of our new academic year,” said Nelson Chipman, associate professor of cinema arts at Point Park University.  “It will be thrilling to not only see Point Park and the City of Pittsburgh profiled on the national stage, but also a great way to highlight all the work current students and alums have done on the project and to share it with the University community at large."

“The Chair” is also produced by Pittsburgh native and renowned actor, Zachary Quinto, and his production company, Before The Door Pictures.

Written by Dan Schoffer, the film is a coming-of-age comedy about a group of former high school classmates who return home from college for Thanksgiving.

The directors will have creative leeway to develop their respective films using their own ingenuity and distinct experience. While they are both first-time feature film directors, Dawson is an Internet superstar whose YouTube comedy channels boast more than 10 million subscribers and more than a billion views. Martemucci is a writer, actor and filmmaker who most recently received critical recognition for her independent film "Breakup at a Wedding," which she co-wrote, produced and starred in.

Moore has served as producer or executive producer on such films as “Good Will Hunting,” “Glory Daze,” “Best Laid Plans,” “Joy Ride,” “American Pie,” “Waiting” and “Reindeer Games.”  He formed LivePlanet alongside Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Sean Bailey, and was the creator of “Project Greenlight.” Since 2005, Moore has directed or produced “American Reunion,” “The Adjustment Bureau,” “The People Speak,” “The Last Resort,” and “Promised Land,” which also was filmed in Pittsburgh. He’s currently the co-founder and managing director of The Media Farm.

Quinto graduated from Central Catholic High School and Carnegie Mellon University.  His television roles include Adam Kaufman on the Fox series “24” and Sylar on the science fiction series, “Heroes.”  He also played Spock in the remake of “Star Trek” (2009) and “Star Trek into the Darkness” (2013).  He recently starred on Broadway as Tom in Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie.” His production company, Before the Door Pictures, produced the Academy Award-nominated film, “Margin Call,” in which Quinto also starred, and last year’s critically acclaimed film, “All is Lost,” starring Robert Redford.

The Umbrella Man Premieres

For Immediate Release
May 21, 2014
Point Park University-produced movie ‘The Umbrella Man’ to premiere at Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival

PITTSBURGH – The Point Park University-produced feature film, “The Umbrella Man,” will premiere next month at the Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival.

Directed by Michael Grasso, “The Umbrella Man” will be screened at 1:45 p.m., Sunday, June 22, in the Baverso Theater at the Father Ryan Arts Center in McKees Rocks.

“The Umbrella Man” is the story of a father who becomes engrossed with Kennedy assassination

conspiracy theories after the death of his 8-year-old son. Set in Pittsburgh, the film deals with one couple’s love, loss, and the survival of their relationship. The film stars Carter Roy and Rachael Carpani as the married couple, as well as Abbie Cobb, Rich Williams, John Amplas and Kevin Crowley.

Point Park University was the driving force in developing the original material written by Michael and Joseph Grasso. The REP, Point Park University’s professional theatre company, mounted a staged production of “The Umbrella Man” in 2011 at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Directed by Robert A. Miller, who also is a producer on the movie, the stage play introduced audiences to the deep human drama in an unprecedented stage experience.

Much of the movie was filmed in the Pittsburgh area last year, providing dozens of Point Park University students a unique opportunity for on-the-job training.

"Michael and I are thrilled that 'The Umbrella Man' has been included in the 2014 Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival.  It was an amazing project with incredible performances and a super talented Pittsburgh crew. We are also proud to have teamed with Point Park University in order to provide their students, recent grads and alumni a chance to work on the production of 'The Umbrella Man' and gain valuable real-world experience on a feature film. It was a true Pittsburgh project, and we had a fantastic experience shooting this film in and around Pittsburgh,” said Joe Grasso, co-writer, co-producer and cinematographer.

The screening of “The Umbrella Man” in Pittsburgh follows the announcement last month that another Point Park University-produced film venture, the 10-episode documentary series, “The Chair,” will air this fall on STARZ as the channel’s first original unscripted series. The 10-episode series, filmed in Pittsburgh this year, follows two up-and-coming directors as they compete to make two separate feature films from the same script. More than 100 Point Park students and alumni supported the TV series and two feature films as interns, employees, and through class projects. Additionally, production offices were located on Point Park University’s campus in downtown Pittsburgh.

Point Park University’s involvement in these projects helps to expand its cinema and digital arts offerings to a wider array of students who have the desire to forge a career in the entertainment industry.

PITTSBURGH – The 2014-2015 season of The REP, Point Park University’s professional theatre company, will include two world premieres by Pittsburgh playwrights, a classic by Nobel laureate John Steinbeck and a hilarious comedy about an American singer renowned for her lack of rhythm, tone and especially an ability to sing.

The season runs Sept. 4 through April 12, 2015, at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, 222 Craft Ave., in the city’s Oakland neighborhood.

The 2014-2015 season opens with Steinbeck’s timeless tale of two migrant workers in the Great Depression, Of Mice and Men, directed by Robert A. Miller, Point Park University’s Conservatory of Performing Arts Distinguished Master Artist-in-Residence.

The REP will next present Tomé Cousin directing Souvenir, Stephen Temperley’s uproarious and poignant comedy about the infamous soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, whose inability to carry a tune did not prevent her from selling out Carnegie Hall. Variety called the play, "A beguiling comic jewel with a heart," and The Boston Globe raved, "There aren't many theatrical experiences as good as Souvenir."

The REP’s remaining productions in the season will be two world premieres of works by Pittsburgh playwrights – Gaby Cody’s riotous farce, Prussia: 1866, directed by Kim Martin, and Anthony McKay’s stirring family drama, Endless Lawns, directed by Greg Lehane.

The REP’s 2014-2015 season:

Of Mice and Men
By John Steinbeck
Directed by Robert A. Miller

Friday, Sept. 5 – Sunday, Sept. 21, preview Sept. 4
Rauh Theatre

Adapted for the stage by Steinbeck from his novella, Of Mice and Men tells the story of two migrant workers, George and Lennie, and their dream of settling down one day on their own piece of land.

Of Mice and Men premiered on Broadway with Broderick Crawford and Wallace Ford, and was named Best Play by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle in 1938. Brooks Atkinson of The New York Times said about the play, "Steinbeck has caught on paper two odd and lovable farm vagrants whose fate is implicit in their characters." Steinbeck’s work has been revived many times on Broadway, most recently earlier this year with James Franco and Chris O’Dowd in the lead roles.

Acclaimed Hollywood producer, director and screenwriter, Robert A. Miller, is best known for producing The Crucible, nominated for two Academy Awards and featuring Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, Joan Allen and Paul Scofield. Miller also produced Focus, starring William H. Macy, Laura Dern and David Paymer. His directorial credits include Company of Angels in Hollywood, and Bend in the River, a live PBS broadcast featuring Ken Kesey. Miller directed several plays for The REP, including his first-ever production of his father’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Death of a Salesman in 2008. He also directed The REP’s world premieres of The Umbrella Man in 2010 and A Child’s Guide to Heresy in 2011, and is a producer of the movie The Umbrella Man, filmed in 2012 in Pittsburgh and Dallas.  Miller has served as a Distinguished Master Artist in Residence at the Conservatory of Performing Arts since 2009.

Souvenir

By Stephen Temperley
Directed by Tomé Cousin

Friday, Sept. 26 – Sunday, Oct. 12, preview Sept. 25
Studio Theatre

Told through the eyes of her accompanist, Cosme McMoon, Souvenir recounts the remarkable life of Florence Foster Jenkins, an eccentric wealthy socialite who suffered under the delusion that she was a great soprano when, in reality, her voice made people cringe. Nevertheless, growing fans packed her annual recitals at the Ritz Carlton hotel and single concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944 sold out in two hours.  “What is extraordinary about Souvenir is that Temperley has made Jenkins, for all her foolishness, a remarkably sympathetic woman. You never doubt that Jenkins has tremendous dedication to the composers whose work she massacres,” wrote the New York Daily News.

Point Park University graduate Tome’ Cousin is an internationally recognized director, choreographer, educator, performer and creator of musical theater works, ballets, films, new opera, song cycles and art installations, as well as a published author. Cousin has appeared on Broadway in Contact, A Free Man of Color, and Dreamgirls, national tours of Dreamgirls, My One and Only, and A Chorus Line, and internationally in Bob Fosse’s Sweet Charity (Switzerland), The Who’s Tommy, La Cage aux Folles, Starlight Express, and Tabaluga und Lilli (Germany). He serves as the directing supervisor for original director/choreographer Susan Stroman’s Tony Award-winning musical Contact, having staged 12 companies worldwide including premieres in Hungary, Korea and Poland. Earlier this year, he directed By the Way, Meet Vera Stark for The REP. Cousin teaches at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama.

Prussia: 1866
By Gab Cody
Directed by Kim Martin

World Premiere
Friday, Feb. 6 – Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, preview Feb. 5
Rauh Theatre

Written by Pittsburgh playwright and Point Park alum Gab Cody, Prussia: 1866 is a farcical examination of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and his proto-feminist friends. When confronted with a difficult life decision so many have asked, “What would Nietzsche do?” Prussia: 1866 asks this question and finds the answer is a farce. While some of the details of Nietzsche’s life may not exactly jive with the details of the play, we do know, however he was alive and 22 and living in Prussia, and was, we can imagine, a passionate and conniving young man at the time.

Kim Martin has directed The REP’s productions of Becky’s New Car, The Lonesome West, and Mojo. A graduate of Point Park University, Martin has directed, acted in, and stage-managed more than 150 productions. Some favorites include Glengarry Glen Ross, Guys & Dolls, Drinking in America, Deathtrap, The Dumb Waiter, Annie, La Ronde and Three Sisters. Martin is the Director of Production at the Playhouse, and serves as an adjunct faculty member instructing students pursuing a technical theatre degree.

Endless Lawns
By Anthony McKay
Directed by Greg Lehane

World Premiere

Friday, March 27 – Sunday, April 12, 2015, preview March 26
Studio Theatre

Written by Pittsburgh playwright and Carnegie Mellon University professor Anthony McKay, Endless Lawns is an emotionally trenchant story about two sisters and the men who love and care for them.

McKay, who received an acting degree from CMU in 1969, has appeared on Broadway with the Negro Ensemble Company in The First Breeze of Summer and in Jean Kerr's Lunch Hour with Gilda Radner. Off-Broadway, he appeared in Moonchildren, Incident At Vichy, and Clarence at the Roundabout Theatre.

A professor of drama and music at Carnegie Mellon, Greg Lehane has directed plays in New York City, where he was a founding member of Primary Stages Company and directed five New York premieres with that company. His work has been seen in American Regional Theatres, in Canada and in Egypt, where he was a Distinguished Lecturer in Drama at the American University in Cairo. He directed a trilogy of Greek tragedies for the Moscow Art Theatre School. He also has directed television programs for all three networks, PBS, TBS, Lifetime, Nickelodeon, USA, The Disney Channel, in London, and in France for worldwide syndication. He has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Direction twice.

Payne Directs Reimagined Hecuba

Conservatory Theatre Company brings fresh perspective to classic Greek tragedy ‘Hecuba’

Directed by Monica Payne, the show previews Nov. 7, runs Nov. 8-24  at the Pittsburgh Playhouse

PITTSBURGH – Point Park University’s Conservatory Theatre Company presents a refreshingly new take on Euripides’ classic Greek tragedy, Hecuba, directed by Monica Payne.

Hecuba opens Friday, Nov. 8, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 24, with a preview on Thursday, Nov. 7, in the Studio Theatre at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Performances will be at 8 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets range from $18 to $20 and can be purchased by calling the Pittsburgh Playhouse box office at 412.392.8000, or at www.pittsburghplayhouse.com.

In Greek mythology, Hecuba was a queen, the wife of the King of Troy during the Trojan War, and mother of 19, many of whom became major players in The Iliad. In this fresh twist on Euripides' play, Hecuba is a tragic tale of a mother's grief and the power of revenge. Artfully reimagined, the Conservatory Theatre Company's production evokes striking images of more recent crimes against humanity.

Payne directs Hecuba, with scenic design by Jeff Fuga, costume design by Cathleen Crocker-Perry, lighting design by Cat Wilson, and sound design by Steve Shapiro. Nik Nemec is stage manager.

Payne directed the Playhouse Jr. production of Huck Finn in May. Her other directing projects include her own adaptation of The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Erendira and her Heartless Grandmother by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Elektra by Euripides, Gross Sales by Erica Jones, and Natural Affection by William Inge. As an actress, Payne appeared in several productions with Steppenwolf Theatre Company and worked with many off-loop companies in Chicago, including The Hypocrites, Famous Door, The Journeymen, and the Artistic Home. She is the recipient of the James Pendleton Foundation Prize and is a member of the 2008 Lincoln Center Director’s Lab, as well as the 2012 Director’s Lab West in Los Angeles.

The low-residency program requires students to take courses online during the fall and spring semesters, and attend three dynamic residencies of one to two weeks at Point Park's downtown Pittsburgh campus. The program includes temporary housing at no additional cost in close proximity to campus.

In the residencies, students will work with a core of talented faculty writers in an intimate workshop setting, engage in table reads with actors, directors, fellow students and visiting artists, and incorporate and offer feedback in an intensive collaborative environment.

"There is nothing else like this M.F.A. program regionally, specifically the focus on studying both stage and screen, with the ability to tailor your degree depending on your interests," said adjunct faculty member and award-winning playwright Tammy Ryan, who will be one of the program instructors.

"Today's media and stage writing avenues are ever-evolving, and the need to write across multiple visual areas of interest is a must," said Nelson Chipman, chair of the Department of Cinema and Digital Arts and director of the new M.F.A. program. "This program will help students focus on their primary area of interest, while exposing them to many other facets of writing for the screen and stage.

Students enrolled in the low-residency program can earn their M.F.A. degree in two years while balancing full-time employment and family responsibilities. Students interested in teaching will have the opportunity to explore instructional design, course preparation and mentoring during Point Park's playwriting and screenwriting summer camps for high school students.

Applicants are now being accepted for the fall 2014 term.

For additional information on this program, students can contact the Office of Graduate and Adult Enrollment at http://www.pointpark.edu/Admissions/GraduatePrograms, call 412.392.3808, or email ptenroll@pointpark.edu.

The season:

The Wind in the Willows
Adaptation, Music and Lyrics by Douglas Post
Based on the book by Kenneth Grahame
Appropriate for K-4th grade

Field Trip Performances: May 7-30, 2014
Public Performances: Weekends, May 10-25, 2014
Rockwell Theatre

A beloved children’s tale, The Wind and the Willows tells the story of four animal friends exploring the English countryside. The friends, with Mr. Toad at the helm, set off on an adventure that teaches them great lessons about morality and friendship. This classic tale has been adapted for the stage in a delightful musical format by Douglas Post.

Hush: An Interview with America
By James Still
Appropriate for 5th-7th grade

Field Trip Performances: May 8-30, 2014
Public Performances: Weekends, May 10-25, 2014
Studio Theatre

What can Maggie Parks see that the rest of the world cannot? When a national news reporter thinks she’s found a great feel-good story about the young girl with mystical visions from Hush, Kansas, the attention has uncomfortable consequences. Using rich symbolism and surreal imagery, Hush is an allegory about growing up, individuality and the perils of celebrity.

James Still is a nationally recognized writer of theatre for family audiences. He has received the Charlotte B. Chorpenning Playwright Award for Distinguished Body of Work and Hush was selected as an ASSITEJ Outstanding International Play for Young Audiences. He also was a finalist for a Humanitas Prize for his work as a writer for the Nickelodeon television series, Little Bear.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Music and Lyrics by William Finn
Book by Rachel Sheinkin
Appropriate for 8th grade and older

Field trip performances: May 22-June 6, 2014
Public performances: Weekends, May 24-June 8, 2014
Rauh Theatre

Spelling Bee creates a world of pedantic teens and sophomoric humor that The New York Times called “irresistible and entirely lovable.” The squeaky clean tradition of the county spelling bee gets a fresh treatment when the gawky contestants - including four selected audience members - compete for local glory, their parents’ affection and, of course, cash. Along the way, they learn the value of doing the best they can and enjoying what they do. Oh, and how to spell C-A-P-Y-B-A-R-A.

In 2005, Spelling Bee racked up two Tony Awards (Original Broadway Production: Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical), three Drama Desk Awards (Original Off-Broadway Production: Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Ensemble Performance, and Outstanding Director of a Musical), and two Lucille Lortel Awards (Original Off-Broadway Production: Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Featured Actor). Spelling Bee contains some adult content and is recommended for audiences ages 13 and older.

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark
By Lynn Nottage
Directed by Tome’ Cousin

Friday, March 21 – Sunday, April 6
Studio Theatre

“A dazzling comedy about racial identity in Hollywood” (New York Post), Lynn Nottage’s hilarious satire chronicles the 70-year journey of Vera Stark, a headstrong African-American maid and budding actress, and her tangled relationship with her boss, a white Hollywood star desperately grasping to hold onto her career. When circumstances collide and both women land roles in the same Southern epic, the story behind the cameras leaves Vera with a controversial legacy scholars will debate for years to come. By The Way, Meet Vera Stark enjoyed an extended run Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre (Lily Award, Drama Desk Nomination) and, most recently, at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. “As delightful to look at as a Valentine's Day box of candy ... ebulliently comic,” The Los Angeles Times raved.

Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Ruined premiered at Manhattan Theatre Club and Goodman Theatre (OBIE, Lucille Lortel, New York Drama Critics’ Circle, Audelco, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play).  She won the 2010 Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award, Dramatists Guild Hull-Warriner Award, inaugural Horton Foote Prize for Outstanding New American Play (Ruined), and Helen Hayes Award (Ruined).
