Join Birbiglia as he visits Cats-a-chusetts, argues with a stranger about her nut allergy, hosts an awards show for angry celebrities, and learns that Fozzie Bear is a tough act to follow. About Mike Birbiglia
Over the past 12 years comedian Mike Birbiglia has developed a one-of-a-kind storytelling style in the world of standup comedy. Birbiglia’s recent off-Broadway hit, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show and was named a Critics Pick by The New York Times, New York Magazine, and Time Out New York.

Following a successful New York run, Mike brought the show to more than 70 cities worldwide, including the Sydney Opera House, London’s Soho Theatre, and Carnegie Hall. Pittsburgh, PA- The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is proud to present the comedian, singer, actress, and author Sandra Bernhard on April 27, 2013 at the Byham Theater.  Bernhard’s performance is a hybrid of standup comedy and rock ‘n roll – a unique mixture of political satire, pop culture commentary and cabaret.  Bernhard’s bitter critiques of celebrity culture have earned her a spot on Comedy Central’s famous “100 Greatest Standups of All Time.” This performance is a part of the 2012-2013 Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series.

Sandra Bernhard began her career at L.A.’s famed Comedy Store in the ‘70s, which earned her a supporting role on The Richard Pryor Show in 1977.  Bernhard caught her big break in 1983 when she caught the nation’s attention as the star of Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy. Her first one-woman show, the groundbreaking Without You I’m Nothing, ran for 6 months off-Broadway in 1988 and served as inspiration for the film and Grammy-nominated album of the same name.

Bernhard’s extensive resume spans nearly the entire entertainment industry. From 1991-1996 Bernhard played Nancy Bartlett—the first openly gay character on a network sitcom—on Roseanne, and further bolstered her television resume with her work on  The Richard Pryor Show, Law & Order: SVU, The Sopranos, and Ally McBeal. She has appeared more than 30 times on Late Night with David Letterman and has been a regular guest of Howard Stern’s since the early ‘80s.

Additionally, Bernhard’s film credits include Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy, for which she was awarded Best Supporting Actress by the National Society of Film Critics, and Nicholas Roeg’s Track 29, Hudson Hawk, Dinner Rush, and Dare. Further bolstering her performance skills, Bernhard has released a number of popular albums and has also sung with or opened for various musical acts, including: The Pretenders, Cyndi Lauper, and the Scissor Sisters.

Her most recent show, I Love Being Me, Don’t You? played to sold-out crowds for an extended run last summer in Los Angeles and the album version of the show was released on Rooftop Records last fall. The founders were clear that they believed that God existed and had a central role in the concept of liberty. That they so often respectfully reference this higher power cannot be disputed. Were they wrong? 

What does the phrase “pursuit of happiness” mean?

Do you think that the majority of the founders who were against slavery did the right thing in giving in to the minority that wanted to preserve it? If they hadn’t, what do you think would have happened?

Do you think our governments today have the full “consent of the governed?”

How could people who understood their own need for freedom be such hypocrites when it came to Africans and Native Americans?

How should we think regarding immigration?

The issue of term limits has often debated in recent years. The Constitution does not place any limits. Do you think term limits are a good idea? If so, what should the limits be?

Is our tax system today completely Constitutional?

Should the Electoral College be retained?

What exactly constitutes freedom of speech?

What weapons are covered under the Second Amendment?  Should all weapons be registered?

Should information stored on your computer or cell phone be considered among your “papers and effects” and protected under the Fourth Amendment?

Does “secure in person” include protection of private communications we send by email, social networks or cell phones?  Should these not be as private as personal letters sent thought the U.S. Postal Service?

Does the government use the tax system in unfair ways to invade our privacy?

The right to sue is apparent. But are there too many lawsuits today and should they be limited somehow without violating the Seventh Amendment?

If a state is at fault for injury to a private citizen, should that citizen be able to seek compensation in the courts?

Why did it take so long to deal with issues of slavery? And why even after the Thirteenth Amendment was passed did people continue to persecute and abuse former slaves?

Some might say passage the Twenty-Sixth Amendment paved the way to the fiscal mess we are in today. Do you think it is time for a tax revolt? Do the tax systems need a total overhaul?

Was the temperance movement right? Should it be resurrected to address moral issues today?How similar is the prohibition of marijuana to the prohibition of alcohol?

Should a lame duck President be allowed to issue last-minute pardons for criminals? Should there be lame duck limitations on Presidential and Congressional appointments and legislation?

Do you think term limits should be imposed on Congress?

Do you think that equal opportunity is a reality for the majority of people in the USA? If it isn’t a reality for some, who are they and why are they not experiencing it?

Do you take your freedom for granted?

What 12 actions can we take to preserve our freedom?

These are among the questions Locke confronts with honesty, humor and sensitivity. Locke is indeed “In Love with an Imperfect Union.” He encourages and provokes us with issues and questions that need to be continuously discussed, debated and constructively acted upon. How well we do it will determine the fate of freedom for our children and grandchildren.
