Ian Rosenberger and Tech Groups Join Forces

For Immediate Release

Heather Jewell

heather@nurelm.com

Ian Rosenberger and local technology groups come together for networking and opportunities with a higher purpose, to save Tassy.

Pittsburgh, PA- Over two months ago, TechPOWR and the Society of Technical Communicators joined forces to present the 2nd annual Technology group social media mashup. The event, scheduled for August 26 in the AlphaLab facility in Southside, is projected to maximize capacity in order to listen to keynote speaker, Ian Rosenberger.

As a Pittsburgh- area native, Rosenberger's repertoire is well known as a former star of the hit CBS show Survivor: Palau, he has also produced shows for MTV and hosted shows for the Discovery Channel. More recently, Ian has taken over a position with a Pittsburgh-based company Strategic Images as the Director of Emerging Media and Business Development. His professional achievements, however, are somewhat towered by his insatiable need to help those in need, leading him to Haiti earlier in the year.

After spending some time in the Earthquake-ravaged Haiti, Ian shared a truck ride with a young man that would change his life and perspective. Tassy Filsaime , a 19 year old Haitian boy, had witnessed the chaos during and after the 8.0 earthquake struck the capital in late December, but now he was fighting for his own life. To the common person, Tassy appeared to have only a facial deformity. Soon, doctors declared that this was no ordinary deformity, in fact, it was a rapidly-growing cancer that would soon end his life if he wasn't able to get the surgery he needed.

This began a charity drive to help raise $30,000, declared by Dr. Jeb Blaugrund, as the amount needed to save this young man. Ian Rosenberger has headed up the initiative here in Pittsburgh with an event at the Priory in the North side on August 26th. Also, that evening, Rosenberger will also be speaking at the Technology Mashup on the lighter topic of Social Media. However, in light of the devotion and appreciation of the technology community to help in this cause, a silent auction will be held for the benefit of Tassy Filsaime.

NuRelm, a well-known local Website software and Web development company, is donating a Website software package in the value of $1700, including 12 month subscription to their hosted content management system, NuContent, and free integration into the recipient business' Website. NuRelm's VP of Business Development, Heather Jewell was quoted saying “I think that all the groups coming together to mingle and share in technology and social media is exciting in itself, but to be able to help give the gift of life is a real feeling of accomplishment. Our company is honored to be able to help this young man.”

The 2nd Annual Technology Group Social Media Mashup is schedule for the same day as the Priory event, August 26 from 5:30PM-8:00PM. It is free for all in the Pittsburgh technology community. To attend either of Ian's events, you can sign up for the Technology Mashup by visiting http://techmashup.eventbrite.com/ . Also, to attend the charity event you can register with this link http://anightfortassy.eventbrite.com/

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents Broken Social Scene with Special Guest, The Wooden Birds

Friday, September 8, 2010, at 8:00 p.m.

Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street

Pittsburgh, PA: The Toronto indie-rock collective Broken Social Scene is known for the improvisational easiness of its live sets and a steady following on college radio. A Broken Social Scene concert is an effervescent rush of melody, invention and sonic magic. Broken Social Scene with special guest The Wooden Birds will perform at the Byham Theater on Friday, September 8, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. This concert is presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Opus One Productions, as part of the Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series.

Founded ten years ago by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, Broken Social Scene quickly established themselves as one of the vital voices in independent music. Made up of an assortment of musical friends, lovers, and strangers, the band emerged fully-formed from their hometown of Toronto in 2002. They were an instantly engaging energetic entity— a tightly-knit community bursting at the seams with talent and personality. Their albums— which were recently regaled on many “Best of the Decade” lists for the 00’s— are cinematic, critically-acclaimed splashes of concept and melody, marrying a dizzying onslaught of sounds with finely-crafted choruses. The band’s ability to weave a plethora of voices, specific genre elements, and varied instrumentation into a postmodern aural pastiche launched them onto the international stage. Between 2002 and 2009, Broken Social Scene toured everywhere — from Mexico City to Moscow— winning Juno Awards, scoring acclaimed films like Half Nelson, making multiple appearances on late-night television shows, and more. Live, their shows are notoriously epic, cathartic affairs. Broken Social Scene has cemented their status as one of Canada’s most important musical exports. In their newest release (May, 2010) Forgiveness Rock Record the band sings about acceptance and moving on and making amends for past mistakes, like “World Sick” (set amid “a minefield of wounded affection”) and the urgent rocker “Forced to Love” that describes interpersonal anxieties.

About Special Guest, The Wooden Birds

The Wooden Birds consist of singer and founder Andrew Kenny on vocals and bass, Matt Pond on guitar, Leslie Sisson playing lead guitar, and Sean Haskins on drums. Andrew Kenny is a native Texan who is best known as the singer, songwriter behind mellow indie favorites the American Analog Set. Kenny has also performed as guest artists with the Album Leaf, Her Space Holiday, Sytrofoam, Ola Podrida, Arthur & Yu and Broken Social Scene. Often compared to Fleetwood Mac, The Wooden Birds latest release is titled Magnolia (2009).

Tickets ($32.75, $37.75) for Broken Social Scene on Sunday, November 22, 2009, at 8:00 p.m., at the Byham Theater may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at www.pgharts.org, or by calling (412) 456-6666. To purchase 10 or more tickets at special discounted rates, please call (412) 471-6930.

Classes are open to all ages, but seating is very limited, eight spots total. More than a live music performance, Pink Martini is a rollicking musical adventure. Composed of 12 musicians, this “little orchestra” has performed its multilingual repertoire on stages around the world. The group draws its inspiration from the romantic Hollywood musicals of the 1940s and ‘50s, but with a more global perspective. According to bandleader/pianist Thomas Lauderdale, “if the United Nations had a house band in 1962, Pink Martini would be that band.”

Cheers, Pittsburgh Launches New Site

August 5, 2010

For immediate release.

CheersPittsburgh.com - a new website about where to go and what to do in Pittsburgh.

Cheers, Pittsburgh! launches a new website, CheersPittsburgh.com, a place that lists restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels, shopping centers and shops, spas, gyms and more. Also listed are events of all kinds, from large scale concerts, sporting events and theater productions.

“We feel that there is a need for an all-encompassing site that informs visitors and Pittsburghers alike about what to do and where to go” says Shannon Martinez, owner of CheersPittsburgh.com. “Our site goes beyond restaurants and bars; it is the go-to place to find out what is happening and where.”

One of the attractions of the site is that it is “self maintaining” - any establishment or event can go on the site, submit a simple on-line form, and be listed free of charge. The listings are screened before they go online to prevent abuse and the dissemination of misleading information.

CheersPittsburgh.com also offers several forms of advertising to enhance an establishment’s or event’s presence on the site. “Our goal is to offer any business that can benefit from the opportunity to stand out from the crowd” says Shannon Martinez.

For a minimal charge an establishment can have a “Featured Listing” which gives the listing an enhanced presence and allows the entering of additional information such as atmosphere, entertainment, directions, hours of operation and link to a website; it also allows the uploading of photos, menus and coupons.

CheersPittsburgh.com also offers the opportunity to increase an establishment’s visibility even more: The site has seven rotating ads (196 x 75 pixels) which appear at random and include a featured listing as well as a link to either the advertiser’s website or featured page.

Even more exposure is offered by only three slightly larger ads (196 x 100 pixels) which appear on every page in the same location.

A page dominating large banner ad (596 x 100 pixels) is also available; it rotates with a small number of other ads.

To increase traffic the site is in the process of search-engine optimization.

“We are only at the beginning” says Shannon Martinez, “and the site is being populated daily. We expect to list at least half of all relevant places to go to and events to visit in the very near future.”

Chef Toni Pais closes Café Zao in the Cultural District

PITTSBURGH, PA -- Award-winning chef and restaurateur Toni Pais has decided to close his downtown dining establishment, Café Zao, located at 649 Penn Avenue in Theater Square, a project of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. The restaurant doors will close officially on Monday, August 9, 2010.

J. Kevin McMahon, CEO and President of the Cultural Trust, says “Toni has been a pioneer in the Cultural District. By opening Café Zao, he spearheaded the growth of more than a dozen restaurants in and immediately around the Cultural District. Café Zao set the standard for fine dining experiences in the Cultural District, and we are grateful to him for his bold vision and mettle that brought a lot of energy and momentum to the ongoing economic development of Pittsburgh.”

“I am excited to pursue other culinary projects and to focus my attention on Café Zinho,” says Chef Pais. “Balancing between the two restaurants took a lot of energy, and I’m looking for a more long-term sustainable approach to my work that affords me the time to be as creative and innovative as possible. “

Since 1999, Mr. Pais has owned Café Zihno (which means “small café” in Portuguese) in Shadyside, and between 1999 and 2004, he operated the upscale, highly acclaimed Baum Vivant. A native of Portugal, Mr. Pais was born into a family of chefs and began his formal culinary education at the age of 13. For over 25 years, he has lived in Pittsburgh where he first met his wife and business partner, Becky, in 1986.

Opened in 2004, Café Zao (which translates to “big café” in Portuguese) occupied 3,000 square feet within the Theater Square complex located in the heart of the Cultural District on Penn Avenue. The restaurant seated 75 people and served Portuguese cuisine with Northern Italian, French and American influences. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust plans to seek restaurateurs interested in renting the venue and to utilize it in the interim as a rental space for private events.

The Aussie Floyd received the ultimate invitation in 1996, becoming the only Floyd tribute band to be asked to perform for a member of Pink Floyd, namely David Gilmour's 50th birthday celebrations in London At DG's 50th birthday party.

Has TAPFS ever played with Pink Floyd?

At DG's birthday, the TAPFS were joined on stage by Richard Wright and Guy Pratt, for a rousing rendition of Comfortably Numb. They then happily handed over their instruments to David Gilmour, Richard Wright, Guy Pratt, Tim Renwick, Gary Wallis and Claudia Fontaine, and were treated to renditions of 'Money', 'What do you want from me', and various other jams, much to the delight of the other party guests.

CD Live! Presents: Aimee Mann

September 22, 2010 at 8 p.m.

New Hazlett Theater

PITTSBURGH, PA: CD Live!, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Three Rivers Arts Festival, WYEP 91.3FM and New Hazlett Theater present Aimee Mann live in concert on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at 8 p.m. Folk pop singer-songwriter Aimee Mann returns to Pittsburgh for a special performance at the New Hazlett Theater, Allegheny Square East, to perform songs from her latest album @#%&* SMILERS. Tickets are $38.25 and can be purchased at The Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), by calling 412-456-6666, or visiting pgharts.org.

From her work in the 80’s with MTV favorite Til Tuesday through her acclaimed solo discs “Whatever” and “I’m With Stupid” in the 90s, Aimee Mann has always been at the forefront of contemporary songwriters. The close of the millennium brought her greatest success, with the simultaneous releases of Bachelor No. 2 and the soundtrack to the film Magnolia, which garnered nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and three Grammys. After a decade in which her music often took a backseat to corporate mergers and contractual obligations, the message was clear: Aimee Mann is here to stay.

On her new album, @#%&* SMILERS, Los Angeles singer songwriter Aimee Mann notes: "I've always been fascinated with eccentric personalities". On Smilers, her seventh solo CD, Mann presents thirteen exquisitely-crafted new songs about the inner life of people living far from the bright lights of success or fame. Some of them are wanderers searching for meaning on the road, others look for it in a shot glass or by losing themselves in the blue trance of a tv set, and still others believe their deliverance will come through money. From the punch drunk characters haunting the twilight world of a dusty downtown boxing gym, to a onetime financial big shot who's returned home after taking a tumble, Mann paints spare, vivid portraits of people who seem to always wind up with the smallest slice of American pie. The songs are soulful, empathetic and somehow ultimately hopeful and optimistic. Says Mann, “When I write about them -- the narcissists, performers, eccentrics, know-it-alls - it helps me recognize some truths about the world and about myself."
