A free concert will be held this Sunday, June 16, from 6 to 8 pm at Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville.  The Pittsburgh based country-rock group, Nancy Deckant and Blackrock Country, will come to Brownsville as part of the Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation’s (BARC) Music on the Mon Concert Series.  The concert is open to the public, and suitable for all ages.  Nancy Deckant’s lyrics and original music are inspiring examples of artistic expression that BARC is proud to bring to our area.

This upcoming show will be the second Music on the Mon concert for 2013.  The first concert of the series was held during the Market Street Arts Festival, when Cello Fury made their Brownsville debut.  Two more free concerts are upcoming at Nemacolin Castle: renowned jazz trombonist Harold Betters on July 7, and local pop and rock band Abacus Jones on August 4.

BARC supports the work of musicians and artists in our area in the pursuit of revitalizing Brownsville.  Through the Music on the Mon Concert Series, BARC provides a source of free entertainment and encourages young people in our area to appreciate art.  Art and culture play an important role in the revitalization of small communities, and have been an instrumental part of our successes in Brownsville.

Flatiron Building

While you’re in town, don’t forget to visit the Historic Flatiron Building at 69 Market Street hosting the Frank L. Melega Art Museum – Fayette County’s only Art Museum --and the Flatiron Heritage Visitors Center Museum, a testament to Brownsville’s unique history and culture.  The museums are open from 10 – 4 Monday through Friday and 1 – 4 Sunday.  Museum admission is free, donations encouraged at the door.

Brownsville Community Festival, Ducky Race Organizers Unveil Aug. 4 Line-up

BROWNSVILLE, Pa. – Drawing on a strong sense of community spirit, elected officials, civic leaders and local business people are expanding the offerings at this year's Brownsville Community Festival and Ducky Race, slated for Aug. 4.

"It's growing every year," says Jack Lawver, Brownsville Borough council president. "We've had more support this year from the community than ever before to keep this going and make it a success."

It is the third year for the community festival and fourth for the Ducky Race, which started as a fund raiser for the Brownsville Area Revitalization Corp. and then blossomed the following year into a much larger event with the borough and Blueprint Communities Committee joining in as co-sponsors.

The staging ground is the downtown's historic Snowdon Square for the majority of activities. The Ducky Race, as is customary, will be held at Brownsville Riverside Wharf, where hundreds of yellow ducks are dropped from the Inter-County Bridge. The first three ducks to float across the finish line will win a weekend in Pittsburgh, $200 Dick's Sporting Goods gift card or a stack of gift cards valued at $100. The ducks are now on sale for $5 each at BARC's office, located at 69 Market St., and can be purchased at the festival prior to the 3:30 p.m. race.

Throughout the day, Snowdon Square will be bustling with activity as community organizations come together along with a diverse mix of vendors, musical performances and free children's activities, including face painting. Additional activities will be held at the Market Street Academy & Performing Arts Center, one of the anchors for the downtown business district. This year's community festival will conclude with a free Music on the Mon show from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the square.

"This is a community effort to bring everyone together and build community spirit," says Brownsville Mayor Lester Ward.

The community festival has become the grand finale to a week of homecomings for alumni, family gatherings and the Brownsville Firemen's Community Picnic at Kennywood Park, which is marking its 99th year Aug. 2. The Brownsville picnic holds the distinction of being the second longest running event in the park's history.

Brownsville's Aug. 4 events kick off with the 17th annual Falcon 5K at Brownsville Area High School. On-site registration opens at 7 a.m.; the race gets under way at 9 a.m. Trophies will be awarded to the overall top three male and female walkers and runners of the 12 age categories. To register in advance at a discounted fee, contact Ed Gursky of Brownsville or Tricia Rohlf at the high school before July 29. Proceeds benefit the Brownsville Cross Country Boosters.

Following the Falcon 5K, the activity swings downtown. Vendors will open booths at 11 a.m.  A community parade is scheduled to start at noon, featuring local fire trucks and emergency vehicles from at least 20 companies. The route will wind down Market Street, circle around town and stop near Snowdon Square. Also participating will be BASD's marching band, dance troupes, cheerleading squads, 5K runners and winners and a festive array of costumed characters. A panel of judges will select winners for a variety of trophies, including the best decorated fire truck.

9 a.m. to 11 a.m. – 5K Race at Brownsville Area High School
11 a.m. – Booths open for business in Snowdon Square
Noon – Community parade
1 p.m. to 2 p.m. – Entertainment begins on the main stage.
2 p.m. – Parade winners will be announced.
2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. – Entertainment, main stage
3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Ducky Race, wharf
4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. – Entertainment, main stage
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Music on the Mon

An Afternoon of Arts in Brownsville, PA


BROWNSVILLE, Pa. –

Join us for an afternoon of arts events in Brownsville, PA on July 17th.

First, visit the Gazalie Building (131 Market Street) from 1pm-4pm to view our newest ‘Images of Yesterday: A Peek into Brownsville’s Past’ photography exhibit. Take in the river from the Gazalie Building’s second level windows and enjoy photographs documenting the development of a portion of Market Street as well as Brownsville’s 1914 ‘Old Home Week’.

After the photography exhibit, grab a bite to eat at any number of local Brownsville restaurants, and then be sure to meet us on the lawn at Nemacolin Castle from 6pm-8pm to enjoy an evening of acoustic rock and blues with The Dave Iglar Band. The Dave Iglar Band has been touted as one of the best rock and blues bands in the region. The concert is free and open to the public.

Their basic lineup of guitar, bass, and drums is enhanced by the fact that all four members sing lead. BROWNSVILLE, Pa. - The Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation (BARC) has finalized its summer concert series Music on the Mon.

The free events are held on the lawn at Nemacolin Castle, 136 Front St., Brownsville. This year's schedule features:

June 26 - The Jades

The Mon Valley's own four piece classic rock cover band

July 17 - The Dave Iglar Trio

Well-known in the region, The Dave Iglar trio boasts a versatile song list of original material and creative adaptations of blues and rock classics.

Aug. 7 - Jill West and the Blues Attack

Voted "Best Band in Pittsburgh" for more than 10 years, the group is known for its edgy blues rock accompanied by the dynamic vocals of Miss Jill West.

Aug. 21 - The Tiger Maple String Band

Hailing from northwestern Pa., the Tiger Maple String Band is dedicated to continuing traditional and original music inspired by Appalachian fiddle tunes, mountain ballads and coal-mining songs.

Summer is fading fast, but it’s not over yet! Before we say our farewells to those sweet summer nights, the Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation (BARC) would like to invite everyone to attend this summer’s final Music on the Mon concert. On Sunday, August 29th, the Dave Iglar Band will perform their acoustic show at the Nemacolin Castle stage in Brownsville from 6-8pm. This concert is free to the public and welcomes all fans to attend.



The Dave Iglar Band combines a perfect blend of blues, rock and jazz. While singer and songwriter Dave Iglar is entertaining the crowd with his lead guitar and captivating vocals, his talented band members Andrea Iglar (Saxophone/Vocals) and Mark DeMeno (Rhythm Guitar/Vocals) will chime in to create this must-see powerhouse trio.

Regardless of your musical preference, you won’t want to miss this astounding performance. This crew is sure to have any audience member up and out of their seat.

Jill West and Blues Attack are taking the stage at the 2010 ‘Music on the Mon’ concert series

The Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation (BARC) has invited Jill West and Blues Attack to perform at this year’s Music on the Mon concert series. The performance will take place on August 8th at the Nemacolin Castle stage in Brownsville and will last from 6-8pm. This concert is free to the public and welcomes all fans to attend.

This Pittsburgh-based blues band is best known for their fierce and blood-pumping performances, which always seem to perfectly compliment their original style of hard-edged blues. Jill West, the lead singer of the group, is famous for her powerful vocals and fearless attitude. Her striking confidence radiates in each song she performs. West’s band mates of Blues Attack also have their own special approach for dazzling any crowd. With two talented guitarists who thrive in any limelight, a keyboard player with an impressive majestic ability and a dynamic drummer whose beats generate instant chills, Blues Attack provides the perfect balance of flair in order to please every audience.

Although the group has found themselves performing all over the tri-state area and have even opened for an array of musical artists across the nation, Jill West and Blues Attack seem to always make their way back home to areas in and around the big steel city.

What -- The 2nd Annual Mon River Communities Dinner Cruise. The evening cruise will include a buffet dinner, cash bar, sightseeing and socializing with other community members. In addition, Mr. John Detisch who established the program of MUSIC ON THE MON series in Brownsville will be honored as the Distinguished Citizen and presented with an award.

When-- 6 PM Tuesday, August 3rd

Where --- The Gateway Clipper vessel, Empress will begin boarding at 6:00pm and will depart promptly at 6:30pm from the Charleroi Trustees Park. The Empress will travel south on the Mon River towards California, and the cruise will last approximately 2 ½ hours.

How -- This year the event is organized by the Greater Rostraver Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Brownsville (BARC), Donora Smog Commemorative Committee, Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, Monessen Historical Society, and TEAM Charleroi.
