Pittsburgh Passion Season Lives Up to City of Champions

PITTSBURGH – In a season of breaking barriers, new players and plays to remember, the Pittsburgh Passion left an impressive imprint on sports history for 2013!

The Pittsburgh Passion first made history by playing the first game ever at the new Highmark Stadium in Station Square.  On April 6th, 2013, Rookie Fullback Candice Snyder made Highmark Stadium history making the very first touchdown and Passion Quarterback, Lisa Horton threw her 100th regular season touchdown of her career against the DC Divas in their opening game.

The Passion’s defense had their first shut-out, of 4 total for the season, on April 20th against the Toledo Reign and their special teams added one blocked punt and several amazing kick returns to lead the Passion to victory.

The Passion had their second shut-out in a row, on April 27th against the Columbus Comets, becoming the first sports team to win at Highmark Stadium.  Wide Receiver, Rachel Wojdowksi started off her remarkable season breaking her 1000th career receiving yard mark early in the first quarter of that game and Passion Kicker, Amy Fallon was 7 for 7 on extra points. The Passion defense greatly attributed to the game as Linebacker, Tia Montgomery had an interception for an 83 yard touchdown return and Passion Rookie, Linebacker, Amanda Duncan, had a 39 yard fumble recovery in for a Passion touchdown. The Passion defense finished with two fumble recoveries and three interceptions against the Comets.

In the fourth game of the season, Lisa Horton threw her first 300 yard passion yard game of the season, along with Rachel Wojdowski’s four touchdowns against the Boston Militia.  Wojdowski had a career-high of 8 receptions, tying a Passion record of 197 receiving yards in one game. Kicker Amy Fallon kept her consistency as she kicked 4 for 4 extra points keeping her count to 24 of 25 extra points at this point in the season.

The Passion achieves a clean sweep in their second meeting against division opponents, the Columbus Comets. Passion safety, Alex McAtee had an interception returned for 35 yards and a pass deflection against Columbus. Wide Receivers Rachel Wojdowski and Angela Baker had one touchdown each and Fullback Candice Snyder with two touchdowns all contributing to the win.

As the Passion won their second-match up against the DC Divas,  Rachel Wojdowksi had her seventh 100-yd receiving game for her Passion football career, along with three offensive touchdowns and one interception returned for a 37-yd touchdown. Lisa Horton had her second career 300-yd game and passing 4 TDs. The Passion defense was lead by Linebacker, Ebony Ivy with 14 tackles. Safety, Krystal Cozzo had one offensive touchdown and 3 pass deflections on defense in the game against the Divas.
To wrap up the regular season, the Passion had their fourth shut-out of the season against the Detroit Dark Angels. Defensive Back, Sharon Vasquez, had an interception in the first quarter, returning the ball for a 51-yd touchdown. Vazquez tied the Passion record with three career interceptions returned for touchdowns. Passion Kicker, Amy Fallon kicked her 100th Career extra point during the second quarter of the game. The defense also contributed two goal-line stances in the game. The Passion offense was lead with Lisa Horton with one rushing touchdown and one touchdown pass. Angela Baker had one touchdown in the second quarter and Candice Snyder also had a touchdown tying the Passion rookie record for most touchdowns in a season.

The Pittsburgh Passion will begin their journey to the 2013 Women’s Football Alliance Playoffs, as they host the first round this Saturday, June 15th at Hempfield Area Stadium in Greensburg, PA against the Cincinnati Sizzle.  Kick-off is at 7PM and tickets are available at the gate. $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, military and high school or college students with student ID’s.  5 and under are free.


RECORD RECAP

The Passion clinched their sixth playoff berth this season in franchise history. The Passion tied the record for 4 shutouts in a regular season and was also undefeated in away games (4-0) this season.

Horton set a Passion record with 116 completions, with a career high of 1802 passing yards, and 23 touchdown passes.

Wide Receiver, Rachel Wojdowski had a career high of 36 receptions and a Passion record with 766 receiving yards, and 13 touchdown receptions. Wojdowski became the only player to score on offense & defense in the same game at D.C. this season.

Kicker, Amy Fallon set a Passion single season record with highest PAT percentage with 36 of 37 with 97.29% and 3 field goals in a season.

Rookie Fullback, Candice Snyder tied a Passion rookie record with 8 total touchdowns, 298 rushing yards, and 121 receiving yards.

Wide Receiver, Angela Baker had career high with 27 receptions, 328 receiving yards, and 5 touchdowns.

Wide Receiver, Amanda Haeg had 25 receptions, 368 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns.

Corner back, Sharon Vasquez tied a Passion record with three career interceptions returned for touchdowns.

Defensive Linemen, Kim Zubovic, Ebony Ivy and Kaitlain Neidermyer lead the defense surge up front with combined total of 120 tackles, 5 sacks, and two fumble recoveries.

In the linebacker line-up, rookie Linebacker, Amy Betterton finished in the top 5 with 40 tackles and had a 33-yard interception.  Tia Montgomery had 45 tackles and Janice Masters had a career high with 38 tackles.

Passion Players Lisa Horton, Rachel Wojdowski, Sharon Vazquez, Amanda Haeg, Candice Snyder and Amy Fallon honoring 1st Team and Tia Montgomery, Kim Zubovic and Shelby Horak honoring 2nd Team, will all be representing Pittsburgh as they play in the 2013 Women’s Football Alliance All-American Game in San Diego, California on August 3rd, 2013.
