LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University junior quarterback Nigel Barksdale was named Sunday as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division football “Offensive Player of the Week.”
Barksdale earned the honor by completing 19 of 26 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns and running for a third score in The Rock's 28-20 win last Saturday at division rival Clarion University.
With his performance last Saturday, Barksdale has passed for 518 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for three TDs in two games as The Rock's starting signal caller. He passed for 261 yards and three TDs and rushed for 169 yards and two TDs in The Rock's Sept. 29 home loss to Kutztown.
Barksdale came off the bench in three other games to pass for one TD and run for one score and, after six games this fall, has thrown for 715 yards and six TDs and rushed for 247 yards and four TDs this fall. He is second on the team in rushing behind senior running back Akeem Satterfield (575 yards, 4 TDs).
A native of San Jacinto, Calif., and graduate of San Jacinto High School, Barksdale joined The Rock last summer after playing his first two seasons of collegiate competition at Mount San Jacinto College in California.
Barksdale was the second Rock player to earn a PSAC-West Player of the Week honor this fall. Redshirt sophomore free safety Isaiah Coleman earned the defensive honor Sept. 16 after intercepting two passes in SRU's win over division rival Gannon University.
With the win last Saturday at Clarion, The Rock snapped a string of three consecutive losses this fall and five consecutive road losses and improved their season record to 3-4 overall, 2-2 in PSAC-West games.
The Rock entertain Edinboro (3-3, 2-2) in a 2 p.m. PSAC-West and SRU Homecoming game Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
