PITTSBURGH DANCE COUNCIL SEASON
The Pittsburgh Dance Council, a programming division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, brings the best contemporary dance companies from around the world to the Cultural District. Each season, Pittsburgh Dance Council presents diverse, world-class contemporary works, including U.S. and world premieres. “This season, with a focus on delivering new and fresh experiences and international flair, the Dance Council brings a snapshot of contemporary dance and performance,” comments Paul Organisak, Executive Director. Marie Chouinard creates dance conceived from primeval dreams — earthy and strong, yet shaped by irrepressible secrets and unseen dimensions in time. Selected to launch the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, the evening’s program will include Henri Michaux; MOUVEMENTS, inspired by a book of poetry and drawings by Belgian artist Henri Michaux, and the U.S. premiere of GYMNOPEDIES, set to glorious solo piano works by Eric Satie. In Henri Michaux: MOUVEMENTS, dancers form a stunning silhouette to projections, exuding a haunting sense that they, in the artist’s words, are connected to “the strangeness of natural things and the naturalness of strange things.” *Contains nudity.
Zimmermann & de Perrot: Hans was Heiri

The duo Zimmermann & de Perrot have crafted an original and mischievous marriage of theater, circus and dance. Poets as well as magicians, their choreography overflows with cunning depth and humor. In Hans was Heiri, the stage design revolves on a horizontal axis, forcing the performers into the most unlikely positions. All this is put at the service of a caustic story, which makes Hans was Heiri a work that breaks down barriers to an extent rarely seen. This performance is also part of the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts.
Compagnie Käfig: Correria and Agwa

This innovative hip-hop ensemble has become an international phenomenon. Inspired by an encounter with young dancers from the shantytowns of Brazil, director and choreographer Mourad Merzouki created Correria and Agwa — two heart-stopping works showcasing a sensational combination of samba, hip-hop and capoeira dance styles. The all-male Brazilian company exhibits theatrical intelligence, an irresistible personality and astonishing dancing. Bursting with humor and vitality, this performance pulses to an energetic samba and bossa nova soundtrack.
Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève: Glory and Sed Lux Permanet

This world-class dance company is renowned for its exquisite works and far-reaching artistic collaborations. The performance showcases works by two emerging choreographers from the international contemporary dance scene. Glory, choreographed by Andonis Foniadakis, is symbiotic in its fluctuations between fluidity, intensity, expansiveness and minimalism, and is craftily paired with Handel’s flamboyant music. The hypnotic quality of choreographer Ken Ossola’s Sed Lux Permanet, weaves a sculpted shadow play of delicate physicality accentuated by the sensitive, ethereal sweetness of Fauré’s Requiem.

Legendary pop-song diva Marilyn Maye holds the record for number of appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson -76 times. She appeals to Broadway and cabaret audiences eager for dramatic, theatrical numbers, as well to the jazz crowd, who want everything cool and understated. This consummate performer has won the “Celebrity of the Year” award from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs, and recently received the “Legend” award from New York’s Nightlife Critics Association.

Maureen McGovern’s 40-year career has taken her from “The Disaster Theme Queen” to “The Stradivarius Voice.” She is best known for the pop hits “The Morning After” from The Poseidon Adventure and “We May Never Love Like This Again” from The Towering Inferno. Ms. McGovern made her Broadway debut as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance. She subsequently starred in Nine with Raul Julia, 3 Penny Opera with Sting and Little Women, The Musical. Ms. McGovern is currently touring her musical memoir, Carry It On.

She recently starred as Norma Desmond in Pittsburgh CLO’s production of Sunset Boulevard and subsequently released the recording Boom! Live at Birdland with her sister Ann Hampton.

For more than 50 years, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has created uplifting music that marries the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. In the 1980s, Paul Simon incorporated Black Mambazo’s rich tenor/alto/bass harmonies into his landmark recording Graceland, which introduced the South African ensemble to a much broader audience.
