WQED CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY 2012
PITTSBURGH – WQED will commemorate the birth of our great nation and those who have fought with passion and bravery to ensure this country’s freedom. These programs shed light on and honor the individuals who risked their lives to ensure this country’s freedom in the past and present. Experience the story of courageous freedom fighter, Marquis de Lafayette, and let freedom ring with musical celebrations to honor our troops and to celebrate the freedom Americans still cherish this Independence Day.
Let Freedom Ring: A Musical Tribute to the Armed Forces – Sunday, July 1 at 3 p.m. on WQED-TV
This special presentation by The United States Air Force Academy Band pays tribute to our nation's military and proud heritage through a wonderful musical and video presentation. The USAF Academy Band reflects on our active duty force as well as the veterans who have served out country in the past. We hope you enjoy this tribute to our nation’s finest.
Lafayette: The Lost Hero – Sunday, July 1 at 4 p.m. on WQED-TV
What role could a Frenchman possibly play in the freedom of the United States? This program explores the courageous life of Marquis de Lafayette, a man who left France to fervently fight for freedom in the United States before returning to France to aid in the start of the French Revolution. Get a closer look at the role this often forgotten hero played in the freedom of our country in his quest to find freedom for all.
Every Day is a Holiday – Sunday, July 1 at 5 p.m. on WQED-TV
Chinese filmmaker Theresa Loong explores the themes of growing older, immigration, and racism within the context of her father, Paul Loong’s life. Loong (American Legion member, retired Veterans Affairs doctor, practicing Catholic) talks of his experiences as a POW in Japan and his subsequent quest to become an American. The film paints an intimate portrait of the bond between father and daughter and demonstrates why despite struggles, every day is a holiday.
The Mysterious Lost State of Franklin – Sunday, July 1 at 10:30 p.m. on WQED-TV
At the end of the American Revolution, frontier settlers beyond the Appalachian Mountains broke away from North Carolina to form their own government. They named their new territory: The State of Franklin. The region's citizens, once united against the British Crown, now found themselves divided against one another.
Gettysburg’s New Battle: Saving the Stone Soldiers –Monday, July 2 at 10 p.m.
Tourists from around the world admire the 1300 monuments on the Gettysburg battlefield in Pennsylvania. However, time, nature and vandals are taking a toll. This documentary explores efforts to protect, repair and raise funds for the monuments. It showcases the people who know that the best way to physically preserve these "stone soldiers" is to make sure America knows the fascinating human stories behind them.
A Capitol Fourth (2012) – Wednesday, July 4th at 8 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
A Capitol Fourth includes performances by some of the country's best-known and award-winning artists and features the internationally renowned National Symphony Orchestra, led by America's premier pops conductor, Erich Kunzel with the traditional Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" complete with live cannon fire.
