E-Magnify and PowerLink Form Strategic Alliance to Help Women Grow Businesses

We are pleased to announce a new partnership with PowerLink. Through a strategic alliance, PowerLink programs will now be offered exclusively by E-Magnify.

"PowerLink complements the services already offered by E-Magnify, such as business counseling, education and training and mentoring programs, including ATHENAPowerLink and the Women Presidents' Organization," said Jayne Huston, director, Seton Hill University's E-Magnify. "Our alliance will be a great advantage to all of our clients who will now have the opportunity to participate in exciting and impactful new programs."

"For more than 20 years, PowerLink and E-Magnify have been the recognized leaders in the western Pennsylvania women's entrepreneurial community," continued Huston. "This strong new alliance is a tremendous advantage for women-owned businesses in the region."

Lee Ann Munger will lead PowerLink for E-Magnify from a satellite office at the Riverside Center for Innovation on the Northside of Pittsburgh. She is charged with continuing to direct the program's strategic plan and working to successfully integrate PowerLink with E-Magnify.

"After two great years at the University of Pittsburgh's Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence, PowerLink is returning to its roots as an organization that focuses exclusively on women entrepreneurs," said Munger.

Founded in Pittsburgh, PA in 1991, PowerLink is a unique and proven resource for advancing women-owned businesses.

The PowerLink Advisory Panel Program is a core program and provides women business owners with a high level panel of business advisors. The customized Advisory Panels are composed of volunteer business professionals who are carefully chosen to meet the specific needs of the company. PowerLink maintains a database of approximately 400 professionals who have served on the Advisory Panels. These individuals are highly experienced in their fields and represent some of the top firms in the region.

Since 1991, PowerLink has provided Advisory Panels to more than 200 women business owners. PowerLink has worked with firms in virtually every businesses category ranging from printing to technology to manufacturing. Recent survey data reveals that annual revenues increased 46 percent and the number of employees increased 22 percent as compared with the PowerLink baseline. Additional PowerLink programs that will be offered through E-Magnify include the following:PowerLink Protegee, an advisory program for earlier stage companies; WBE SuperPanel, an advisory program specifically for WBE (Women's Business Enterprise)-certified businesses; Financial Boot Camp, an intensive one-day finance workshop specifically for business owners; PowerHour Lunch, a monthly lunch series on topics of interest to women business owners; CEO Circles, a peer-to-peer advisory program for PowerLink alumni; PowerBuild, an experiential leadership development program for corporate managers and executives; and Connect the Dots, PowerLink's annual event uniting the entire PowerLink community.

Women and Girls Foundation Honors Men for the First Time

PITTSBURGH, Penn., October 1, 2012 – For the first time in its history, the Women and Girls Foundation will honor MEN who are helping to advance women’s rights and opportunities in the greater Pittsburgh region. The awards will be presented at the organization’s annual gala which will take place on Saturday, December 1, 2012, from 6 to 9:00 p.m. at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture. “Celebrating Women began eight years ago as an annual event to recognize and honor amazing women from myriad disciplines who are serving as role models and breaking barriers in our region,” says Heather Arnet, chief executive officer, Women and Girls Foundation. “With so many men from our area standing up for women and serving as champions and advocates in the workplace and the community, we thought it was time to shine a light on them. This year, the name of the event stayed the same but with a slight twist to focus on those being honored – Celebrating woMEN!”

Demi Brae Cuccia

A Special Award of Distinction will be issued to Dr. Garry Cuccia for his heroic efforts to advocate for teen dating violence prevention programs, through the Demi Brae Cuccia Bill, a law named after his daughter who was killed by her boyfriend at age 16.

The event is co-chaired by Gregg and Yu-Ling Behr and Tom and Bonnie VanKirk.

Pittsburgh Chapter of NAWBO Seeks Nominees for Awards

As the 2011-2012 NAWBO year comes to a close, it is The Pittsburgh Chapter of NAWBO tradition to recognize the women in our organization and in the Greater Pittsburgh area who have contributed their time, energy and talents to women business owners, to NAWBO and to our community.  We will also recognize our new members and share news on local and national benefits of NAWBO membership..

Please join us for NAWBO's Annual /Awards Celebration.  Reserve the date, Wednesday, August 15th.  We invite you to join us for a special luncheon of celebration of great businesspersons and their friends.  The luncheon will be held at the Grand Concourse, Station Square. Registration and networking start at 1:00 PM.  The cost of the luncheon is $35.00.

Each year four awards are given. Three of them are for NAWBO MEMBERS only. They are:  Woman Business Owner of the Year, Member of the Year, and Rookie of the Year.

The fourth award is the Founder's Award.  This award is for a woman who most exemplifies the dedication, courage and advocacy of national past president, Gillian Rudd.  Due to her efforts, courage and tenacity, Congressional Act HR5050 was passed in 1989. This historic bill mandated the U.S. government to accumulate and release data on the number of women and minority owned businesses.  It also mandated the SBA to establish outreach, advocacy and training to encourage the growth of women business owners. For many of us it is difficult to remember a time when Women Business Owner's were not recognized or respected.  But some do.  And we know that without her efforts and the leadership of NAWBO, we would STILL NOT exist.  Without acknowledgement of our existence, we are not able to impact or have any significant power, influence, or ability to build our business and shape our economic destiny.

Please submit the names of the women who you believe are the most deserving of the awards given by the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of NAWBO.  Deadline for the nomination: August 8, 2012.
