Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Masterpiece Season Continues
with
An Iliad

Directed by Jesse Berger, Teagle F. Bougere plays the gods and mortals of the Trojan War in this thrilling new adaption by Lisa Peterson & Denis O’Hare.

PITTSBURGH (February 13, 2014) Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Masterpiece Season continues with a new adaptation of the Greek poet Homer’s epic, The Iliad, translated by Robert Fagles. An Iliad was written by Lisa Peterson, a former resident director at the Mark Taper Forum who currently directs across the country, and Tony-winning actor Denis O’Hare, known most recently for his television work on “True Blood” and “American Horror Story.”

An Iliad is directed by the Artistic Director of New York’s Red Bull Theater, Jesse Berger, well-known to Pittsburgh Public Theater’s audiences as the director of Circle Mirror Transformation, A Number, Life X 3, and I Am My Own Wife.

The winner of 2012 Obie and Lucille Lortel Awards, An Iliad runs March 6 – April 6, 2014 at the O’Reilly Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater’s home in the heart of Downtown’s Cultural District. For tickets call 412.316.1600 or visit ppt.org.

Appearing as The Poet is Teagle F. Bougere, whose Broadway credits include The Tempest with Patrick Stewart, and A Raisin in the Sun with Phylicia Rashad and Sean Combs. He also recently starred in several productions of Invisible Man, adapted from Ralph Ellison’s novel.

An Iliad combines majestic language with the informal way we speak today to unleash the tales of the Trojan War and delve into the psychology of passion and rage, both ancient and contemporary. Bougere plays all the Greek classic’s most famous characters: Achilles, Hector, Agamemnon, Helen of Troy, and the gods Athena and Hermes. Colorful and emotionally charged, their stories examine the impulses that drive people into battle and ultimately reveals that human nature has not changed much since the days of Homer’s masterpiece.

Variety described An Iliad as, “A transformative act of theatrical magic.”

The design team for An Iliad is: Marion Williams (Scenic and Costumes), Seth Reiser (Lighting), and Ryan Rumery (Original Music and Sound). The Production Stage Manager is Fred Noel and the Assistant Stage Manager is Kelly Haywood.

PITTSBURGH (Dec. 9, 2013) New audiences this fall were introduced to stellar actor Tom Atkins when he starred as the Stage Manager in Our Town, which began Pittsburgh Public Theater’s MASTERPIECE SEASON. This Jan. 2 – 5 will be the final opportunities to see him at The O’Reilly in the performance of a lifetime as Pittsburgh Steelers founder Arthur J. Rooney, Sr. in The Chief.

Set in Mr. Rooney’s office at Three Rivers Stadium in 1976, this will be the play’s ninth production at The O’Reilly, where it premiered in 2003. “A triumph of the show is that it’s a Pittsburgh history lesson of growing up Irish on the North Side, insider politics, and sports fandom disguised as entertainment,” said the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last year. “It’s mind-boggling to watch such a hugely talented man work the crowd as brilliantly as Atkins does here,” said Pittsburgh City Paper.

The Public’s MASTERPIECE SEASON Continues with
True West

Pamela Berlin directs maverick American playwright Sam Shepard’s rowdiest work about two battling brothers at the edge of the desert.

PITTSBURGH (October 22, 2013) Pittsburgh Public Theater’s MASTERPIECE SEASON continues with a brand-new staging of Sam Shepard’s most famous play, True West. Directed by Pamela Berlin (last season’s Clybourne Park), True West runs Nov. 7 – Dec. 8, 2013 at the O’Reilly Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater’s home in the heart of Downtown’s Cultural District. For tickets call 412.316.1600 or visit ppt.org.

Ken Barnett as Austin

True West debuted in 1980 at San Francisco’s Magic Theater. In the play, Austin (Ken Barnett) comes to his mother’s house in southern California to water her plants while she’s away on vacation. He’s left his wife and kids up north while he works on his screenplay and gets ready to meet with Saul (Dan Shor), a Hollywood producer. Austin’s solitude is shattered when his long-lost brother Lee (David Mogentale), a drifter and thief, shows up unexpectedly. Soon Lee announces that he, too, can write a movie. This role reversal leads to an epic battle filled with action, humor, and famously, dozens of slices of toast. When Mom (Mary Rawson) returns, she hardly recognizes either her house or her sons. Described as Sam Shepard’s most accomplished play, True West reflects on authenticity, myths of the American desert, and what it means to be a real man.
David Mogentale as Lee

The design team for Pittsburgh Public Theater’s production is Michael Schweikardt (Scenic), Michael Krass (Costumes), John Lasiter (Lighting), and Zach Moore (Sound).Randy Kovitz is the Fight Director. About the Playwright

Pittsburgh Public Theater Presents

Clybourne Park

Written by Bruce Norris, this sharply funny triple prize-winner is about race, real estate, and the difficulties of creating a community.

PITTSBURGH (March 27, 2013) Pittsburgh Public Theater’s MADE IN AMERICA season continues with Bruce Norris’ Clybourne Park, winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, Britain’s Olivier Award, and the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play. It is directed by Pamela Berlin, who was at The Public last season to direct Red. Clybourne Park runs April 18 – May 19, 2013 at the O’Reilly Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater’s home in the heart of Downtown’s Cultural District. For tickets call 412.316.1600 or visit ppt.org.

Clybourne Park is set in a Chicago house at 406 Clybourne Street in two separate years: 1959 and 2009. It is the same house that was featured in Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 landmark drama about race and real estate, A Raisin in the Sun. In Act I of Norris’ play, a man named Karl Lindner (who first appeared in A Raisin in the Sun) tries to convince the white owners of 406 Clybourne Street not to sell their home to a black family. In Act II, it’s 50 years later and the neighborhood is now a black community. When a white family buys 406 Clybourne Street and intends to tear it down and rebuild a larger home on the property, a black couple from the local owner’s association challenges the architectural integrity of their plans.
Playwright Bruce Norris

Critics and audiences from Broadway to London’s West End have made Norris’ audacious play a hit. “Norris stews his characters, both black and white, in their own neurotic juices, making terrific comedy out of his clinical dissection of hypocrisy,” said The New Yorker. “Hilariously unrepentant observations about life,” said Newsday. “Unapologetically entertaining, deeply satisfying serious comedy,” said Vogue.

The same seven actors play different characters in each act. The cast includes: Brad Bellamy, Bjorn DuPaty, Megan Hill, Tim McGeever, Jared McGuire, Chandra Thomas, and Lynne Wintersteller.

The design team for Pittsburgh Public Theater’s production of Clybourne Park is Michael Schweikardt (Scenic), Suzanne Chesney (Costumes), John Lasiter (Lighting), and Zach Moore (Sound). Casting is by McCorkle Casting. Fred Noel is the Production Stage Manager; Christine Schott is the Assistant Stage Manager.

Clybourne Park is recommended for mature audiences.

1776. A Musical Play. Book by Peter Stone. Music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards
Directed by Ted Pappas
January 24 – February 24, 2013
The founding of our nation comes to star-spangled life in this grand Tony Award-winning Best Musical. In1776 you’ll see the heroes of the American Revolution like you’ve never seen them before – in rousing songs and dances, comic encounters, and impassioned politics. The stakes have never been higher as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin wrangle to get everyone on the same page – namely, the Declaration of Independence. Theatrical fireworks will fill the O’Reilly Theater in this thrilling story of how we went from 13 colonies, to the United States of America.

Thurgood. By George Stevens, Jr. Directed by Ted Pappas
March 7 – April 7, 2013
In 1967, Thurgood Marshall became our first African-American Supreme Court Justice. In this exuberant one-man play we’ll hear Thurgood’s story in his own words – from humble beginnings as a waiter in Baltimore, to behind the scenes with leaders such as General MacArthur, Robert Kennedy and President Lyndon Johnson, to his triumphant rise to the highest court in the land. A journey of epic proportions,Thurgood is an eye-opening, humorous, and uplifting portrait of a true American hero.

Clybourne Park. By Bruce Norris. Directed by Pamela Berlin
April 18 – May 19, 2013
With brilliant wit this winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 2012 Tony Award for Best Play inspects one house in two separate years: 1959 and 2009. In Act One, the mid-20th century problem centers on a black family moving into Chicago’s white Clybourne Park. In Act Two, it’s 50 years later and the issue is white gentrification in the now black neighborhood. Clybourne Park is a perceptive and sharply funny play about the minefield of personalities that must be negotiated before a community can be created.

Other Desert Cities. By Jon Robin Baitz. Directed by Rob Ruggiero
May 30 – June 30, 2013
Lyman Wyeth is an actor-politician in the Ronald Reagan mold. His impeccable wife Polly never has a strand of hair out of place. Now retired, their life in a wealthy Palm Springs enclave is upset when relatives arrive for the holidays. Son Trip is a TV reality show producer; Polly’s sister Silda is a wisecracking liberal just out of rehab; most troubling is daughter Brooke, who announces that she is about to publish a revealing memoir. This 2012 Tony-nominated Broadway sensation is an entertaining look at unruly family politics.
