MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAMS ON WQED-TV HONOR VETERANS PAST AND PRESENT

PITTSBURGH— WQED-TV will air several programs on May 21 through 26 in honor of American veterans and patriots who fought, or are currently involved in conflicts. Additionally, WQED-FM will broadcast music that honors American veterans on Memorial Day.

Tuesday, May 21
 • The Ghost Army at 8pm
During World War II American G.I.s recruited art students all over the country to take part in the war effort. These soldiers used their artistic ability to create fake tanks, realistic sound effects and fake convoys in order to trick the Germans on the front lines. This documentary tells of their deceptions of the German fronts and their creative futures in art.

Wednesday, May 22

• Secrets of the Dead Airmen and the Headhunters at 10pm
American airmen find themselves stranded in Japanese controlled Borneo during World War II after their B24 bomber is shot down. However, these soldiers are protected by the ones that they were told to fear, the local Dayak tribe.

Friday, May 24
 • PBS Voces Rebel at 10pm
In 1876, the memoirs of Civil War soldier Harry Buford caused controversy. Harry’s real identity was revealed to be Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a Cuban woman raised in New Orleans. Rebel is a historical documentary detective story about a woman, a myth, and the politics of national memory

Sunday, May 26
 • Unforgettable: The Korean War at 3pm
Veterans of the Korean War recount their memories of what has been known as the Forgotten War.

• Maggie’s War: A True Story of Courage, Leadership and Valor in World War II at 4pm
Maggie’s War documents James Megellas’ (“Maggie”) evolution from a citizen to a fearless platoon leader. Seven decades later cameras follow Megellas on an emotional return to European battlefields and war memorials with a small group of family, friends, and 82nd Airborne veterans.

• A Company of Heroes at 5pm
The 2nd Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, known as the “Screaming Eagles” is one of the most revered combat units in U.S. military history and inspired the book and show Band of Brothers. Veterans from this unit recall the horrors and victories, the bonds they made, the tears and blood they shed, and the friends they lost.

• National Memorial Day Concert at 9:30pm
An American tradition in its 20th year, the award-winning National Memorial Day Concert features an all-star line-up along with the National Symphony Orchestra from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Co-hosted by Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna, this year’s show will include a segment that focuses on the impact that multiple deployments has on those who serve as well as their family members, recognition of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, and a tribute to decorated World War II veteran Charles Durning.
