Please mark your calendar for Wednesday, March 5, 2014 for the 8th Annual Celebrate & Share Women of Achievement Awards ~ A Celebration of Women’s History Month.

Each year the Women of Achievement Awards committee, hosted by Allegheny County District Attorney and Mrs. Stephen and Mary Zappala, extends a request to past attendees to submit nominations for this annual event in celebration of the outstanding achievements and contribution of women in the Pittsburgh region.

PITTSBURGH, PA:  In Feminine Aesthetics, the artists of Women of Visions, Inc. address the question, “What is Beauty?” in this special exhibit for Women’s History Month.

“The Feminine Aesthetic is integral to the universe, flowing from grace and aspiration,” says Elizabeth Asche Douglas, Curator of Feminine Aesthetics and President of Women of Visions, Inc. “It is the conflation of sublime opposites, from agonizing birth pains to the exultation of new life.  From the milk of human kindness to a steely determination to endure and overcome all adversity, it embodies the eternal SHE, the being we call Beauty,” says Douglas.  “It is my hope that viewers will find glimmers of the feminine aesthetic mystique in the works of this exhibition.”

In Feminine Aesthetics, women artists Annette Jackson, Denise “Mike” Johnson, Mary Martin, Cathleen Richardson Bailey, Tenanche Rose Golden, Vanessa German, JoAnne Bates, Ruth Richardson, Christine McCray Bethea, Richena Brockinson, LaVerne Kemp, Altha Pittrell, and Elizabeth Asche Douglas present their interpretations of what is beautiful, challenging cultural definitions of beauty and identity, celebrating the self, and honoring the beauty in others. Their diverse interpretations range from paintings to digital photography, assemblages, installation art, and fiber art.

 ABOUT WOMEN OF VISIONS GUILD
Women of Visions, Inc. was co-founded in 1981 by Emma Slaughter and the late Juanita Miller. They recognized a need for a visual arts organization of African American women. There were few venues for African American women artists to exhibit professionally in Pittsburgh One of the objectives of creating a group was to provide professional and mentoring support to such artists. Miller and Slaughter, along with a core group of other women artists founded Visions. In 1990, Visions was incorporated under the name Women of Visions and attained non-profit status in 1995.

The mission of Women of Visions, Inc. is to promote the art of African American women through self-promotion and education. To that end, the organization mounts collaborative exhibits with other arts groups and individuals artists, and builds relationships in the arts and lay community both in and outside of Pittsburgh. These experiences offer members resources and opportunities that allow them to grow personally and professionally.

The members of Women of Visions, Inc. represent a diverse sampling of artistic styles and media including ceramics, collage, digital arts, fiber arts, installation art, jewelry, mixed-media, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. A rich and varied expression of the personal, social and political experience of African American women is voiced. Today, with an ever-increasing membership, Women of Visions, Inc. continues to nurture and support professional and emerging women artist of color, and to bring to the African American community and the general public the richness of our culture and heritage.

to Increase Investments in Women and Girls

News Release - PITTSBURGH— March 8, 2011 — The Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania (WGF) announced today, that in honor of Women’s History Month, and in support of women’s futures, philanthropist Ritchie Scaife has made a lead gift of $50,000 to the Women and Girls Foundation to support WGF’s grantmaking pool for 2011.

This gift is a matching challenge posed to other individuals to meet Mrs. Scaife’s donation by making their own generous gifts to the Women and Girls Foundation. This new matching challenge campaign, “Battle For Equality: The Ritchie Scaife Challenge For Women and Girls” was created by Ritchie Scaife to encourage other individuals to increase their investments in advancing women’s and girls’ rights.

“What impresses me most about the Women and Girls Foundation is their approach to social change,” explained Mrs. Scaife. “Their grants empower women and girls by breaking down systemic barriers to equality. I encourage more women to join me in investing in change not charity. Together we can get to the root causes of poverty, wage inequity, domestic violence, and other forms of gender discrimination and begin to improve them.”

“Ritchie is committed to leveraging her philanthropy to improve the lives of other women and girls,” said Women and Girls Foundation CEO, Heather Arnet, “She understands that in order to ensure long term change, we must invest in policy advocacy to increase and defend women’s rights in our country and in our state.”

To meet the challenge the Women and Girls Foundation must raise at least $50,000 in new donations from individuals this year. Once the match is met, the Foundation will have a grant pool of $100,000 to award to local grantees in 2011.

The Foundation’s mission is to achieve equality for women and girls in the region. Grant awards made by the Women and Girls Foundation are 100% supported by individual donations. Grants are invested in non-profit, non-partisan, public policy initiatives to increase women’s and girls’ rights in Southwest Pennsylvania. By focusing this challenge on the grantmaking pool, donor gifts will have maximum impact reaching dozens of grantee agencies and improving the lives of thousands of women and girls through the public policy improvements achieved by these grants. A request for proposals will be released in May inviting non-profits to compete for the grant awards. Agencies interested in receiving a copy of the RFP should email susan@wgfpa.org.
