JacobTV and Fulcrum Point Ensemble Perform Reality Opera

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dutch avant-pop composter remixes THE NEWS in unprecedented time capsule of modern culture & media
JacobTV and Chicago's Fulcrum Point Ensemble will perform world premiere at the Byham Theater on Friday, April 27, 2012

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Museum’s Off the Wall performance series proudly presents the world premiere of THE NEWS, a 90-minute “reality opera” by avant-pop Dutch composer JacobTV based on non-fiction footage from the international media. This special premiere sponsored by Joan Humphrey is part of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Distinctively Dutch Festival which runs through May 20, 2012.

THE NEWS is a remix of musical composition, video production and social commentary through live performances designed for two vocalists, nine musicians, soundtracks and videos. The drama is constructed using broadcasts, sampled speeches and sound bites from newscasters, politicians, scientists, televangelists, athletes, movie stars and celebrities discussing a vast array of socio-political issues. From global warming to the credit crunch, as well as matters of war and peace to mundane trivialities, THE NEWS exposes western society's obsession with public image, fame, catastrophe and morality.

Featured artists include: Kristien Kerstens (videos); Jan Boiten (stage design, lighting, videos); JacobTV (concept, music, lyrics, direction); “anchor women” Josefien Stoppelenbrug (soprano) and Lori Cotler (alto); Fulcrumpoint New Music Project; and conductor Stephen Burns.

JacobTV
JacobTV (Jacob Ter Veldhuis 1951) started as a rock musician and studied composition and electronic music at the Groningen Conservatory, where he was awarded the Composition Prize of the Netherlands in 1980. He became a full time composer and soon made a name for himself with melodious compositions, straight from the heart and with great effect. Long queues at the box office of the four-day Jacob TV Festival in Rotterdam in 2001 confirmed his growing popularity. The NRC called him the ‘Jeff Koons of new music’ and his ‘coming-out’ as a composer of ultra-tonal, mellifluous music reached its climax with the video oratorio Paradiso, premiered the day after 9-11 and released on CD and DVD by British record label Chandos.
In the last decade JacobTV’s boombox music, for live instruments with a grooving soundtrack based on speech melody, became internationally popular. Although JacobTV is one of the most performed European composers, he is still an outlaw in the established modern classical music scene, and was recently accused of ‘musical terrorism’ after a premiere at the World Harp Congress in Amsterdam. According to the Wall Street Journal his newest work ‘makes many a hip-hop artist look sedate’. In 2007 the ‘box set trilogy, an anthology of his work with 12 hours of audio and video, was released by Basta and presented at a three-day JacobTV mini festival at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.

“JacobTV is preoccupied with American media and world events and draws raw materials from those sources. His work possesses an explosive strength and raw energy combined with extraordinarily intricate architectural design,” notes Limor Tomer, Concerts & Lectures General Manager of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Fulcrum Point New Music Project
Formed by trumpet virtuoso and conductor Stephen Burns in 1998, Fulcrum Point New Music Project champions new classical music and highlights contemporary composers who are inspired and influenced by popular culture, including literature, film, dance, folk, rock, jazz, blues, Latin and world music.  Through multi-disciplinary concert performances and educational programs, the Fulcrum Point ensemble seeks to encourage audiences to make cross-cultural connections between new music, art, technology and literature, gaining greater insight into today’s diverse world.

JacobTV will premiere THE NEWS at the Byham Theater (101 Sixth Street, Cultural District) on Friday, April 27, 2012, at 9 p.m. The world premiere culminates a two-day series of Distinctively Dutch events. On Thursday, April 26, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Carnegie Mellon University's Remaking Cities Institute and World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh will host a panel discussion on "Rethinking Cities in the 21st Century." Panelists include Donald Carter, Director of the Remaking Cities Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU); Vivian Loftness, University Professor at CMU’s School of Architecture; Paul Scheffer, Professor of Urban Sociology, Tilberg University, Netherlands; Rijk van Ark, Director of Economic Affairs, City of Amsterdam; and moderator Rob de Vos, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

On Friday, April 27, from 5:30-9 p.m., The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust's free Gallery Crawl will have a Dutch focus with four galleries exhibiting work by visual artists from the Netherlands. Featured exhibition Global Navigators, supported by the Mondriaan Foundation, highlights multimedia installations and videos at Wood Street (601 Wood Street), SPACE (812 Liberty Avenue) and 707 Penn Gallery. Dutch photographers Rachel Nieborg and Ine Mulder will present the explosive exhibition Guns'N'Girls at 709 Penn Gallery.
Tickets ($20-$30) for THE NEWS and information on all festival events are available at the Box Office at Theater Square, online at trustarts.org/dutchfestival and by calling 412-456-6666. Groups can obtain discounts by calling 412-471-6930. Student tickets are $15 and available at the Box Office and through the phone room.

Armitage Avenue, on Friday, May 4, at 6 and 9 p.m. For more information on the Chicago performances and the Fulcrum Point New Music Project, please visit www.fulcrumpoint.org.

En Vogue Headlines PSO Community Partners Concert

For Immediate Release
March 12, 2012

BEST-SELLING FEMALE R&B GROUP EN VOGUE HEADLINES PSO COMMUNITY PARTNERS CONCERT AT HEINZ HALL

Tickets go on sale Monday, March 19

PITTSBURGH – En Vogue, one of the most successful and popular female R&B groups of all time, will headline the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s (PSO) Ninth Annual Community Partners Concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 29 at Heinz Hall.

En Vogue will perform with the PSO in the second half of the concert, which will be led by PSO Resident Conductor Lawrence Loh. The first half will feature cellist Gabriel Cabezas, winner of the senior division of the 2012 Sphinx Competition, which aims to encourage, develop and recognize classical music talent in the African American and Latino communities.

En Vogue is responsible for a long line of R&B and pop smashes in the 1990s. Songs, such as Hold On, My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It), Giving Him Something He Can Feel, Free Your Mind, and Whatta Man, featuring Salt-N-Pepa, are just a sampling of the mega hits made famous by the Pop/R&B super group.

Fusing style, sophistication, sass, and sex appeal, the En Vogue formula was magical, and the group went on to sell more than 8 million albums. In total, En Vogue recorded five albums: 1990’s Born To Sing, 1992’s Funky Divas, 1997’s EV3, 2000’s Masterpiece Theatre, and 2002’s The Gift of Christmas. There also have been several compilations released, including Best of En Vogue in 1999 and The Very Best of En Vogue in 2001.

This year, the trio – Maxine Jones, Cindy Herron-Braggs and Terry Ellis – are touring worldwide, as well as embarking on film and television projects.

Tickets range from $25.75 to $85.75 and will go on sale to the public at 9 a.m., Monday, March 19. In the PSO’s Community Partners Program, 25 Pittsburgh area nonprofits sign on as "Partners" for the concert. Each Partner is asked to sell at least 50 tickets to the performance. Patrons may also go to www.pittsburghsymphony.org or call the PSO box office at 412.392.4900 or 800.743.8560 to buy tickets and earmark the cost of their ticket purchase to benefit a participating Partner nonprofit of choice.

The Community Partners Program is an annual collaboration between the PSO and Pittsburgh area nonprofit organizations. All proceeds from designated ticket sales to this concert are donated to partner organizations, allowing them to raise a significant amount of funding. The PSO’s Community Partners Concerts have raised more than $631,000 for partnering nonprofit groups since they began in 2004. The PSO donates the orchestra services, and secures corporate sponsors to underwrite out-of-pocket costs associated with guest artist services and concert production.

The PSO would like to recognize and thank Giant Eagle for their lead sponsorship of the Ninth Annual Community Partners Program.

This year, the partner organizations are: Advisory Board on Autism and Related Disorders (ABOARD), Afro-American Music Institute, Allegheny Group of the Sierra Club, Bethlehem Haven, Cancer Caring Center, Children's Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc., East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM), Focus On Renewal, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Homeless Children's Education Fund, Kuntu Repertory Theatre, Martin Luther King, Jr. Reading & Cultural Center, Mission Vision, Naomi's Place Transitional Housing, Pittsburgh Community Services, Inc., Pittsburgh Community Television, PLEA, Small Seeds Development, Inc., Tickets for Kids Charities, Urban Impact Foundation, Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, Ursuline Senior Services, Ward Home, Inc., Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, and YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh.

PNC Pops 2012 - 2013 Season

For Immediate Release
March 12, 2012

PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES PNC POPS 2012-2013 SEASON

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) today announced the 2012-2013 PNC Pops Season, celebrating Marvin Hamlisch’s 18th season as Principal Pops Conductor with the PSO.

Hamlisch recently agreed to extend his contract as Principal Pops Conductor through the 2014-2015 season.

“I perform for many audiences each year and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s family of concertgoers is, by far, one of the best in the world,” Hamlisch said. “That’s why I put together a season that’s sure to please.”

2012-2013 PNC Pops Season

Hamlisch and the PSO jump into an invigorating new season with American Idol pop sensation and television star Katharine McPhee. Star of the hit Spielberg/NBC TV series SMASH, McPhee joins the PSO to lend her vocal stylings to classics, such as, Cole Porter’s Under My Skin, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, and “Somewhere” from West Side Story. She was a finalist on American Idol in 2006, and has since collaborated with Andrea Bocelli, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Chris Botti and David Foster. (Sept. 27-30)

In November, the PSO pays tribute to the greatest rock band ever when Classical Mystery Tour returns to Heinz Hall by popular demand to celebrate The Beatles and Sgt. Pepper’s 45th Anniversary with the PSO. The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is the first rock album to ever win a Grammy for Album of the year. PSO’s new Assistant Conductor Fawzi Haimor conducts favorite Beatles hits presented by a group of musicians who look and sound like John, Paul, George and Ringo. (Nov. 15-18)

Hamlisch returns in December for six performances of the popular Highmark Holiday Pops, where he will premiere a new song inspired by his children’s book to be released in the fall. The concerts include Rachel DeShon, winner of Marvin’s Search for a Star competition, and the return of singing Allegheny County Sheriff’s detective, Ricky Manning, and the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh. (Dec. 20-23)

No one knows the music of love better than Hamlisch! He and the PSO put together a show just in time for Valentine’s Day with My Funny Valentine, also featuring the All-Star College Chorus. Broadway stars Melissa Errico and Ryan Silverman join the PSO for “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady, the theme from Ice Castles and many more glorious love songs. (Feb. 7-10, 2013)

Where else could you hear Judy Garland sing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra? Next March, audiences can experience the classic film The Wizard of Oz as never before – accompanied by the PSO. For one weekend, audiences will see this beloved, Oscar-winning film and hear the music that has captured the hearts and imaginations of generations. (March 14-17, 2013)

Disco Days & Boogie Nights, featuring music from the ‘70s, comes to Heinz Hall in May. Conductor Jack Everly returns to lead the PSO in anthems and classic hits, such as I Will Survive, Bohemian Rhapsody, and American Pie. Along with hits from the Bee Gees, The Village People, The Carpenters and Billy Joel, the groovy songs from a decade of music come together for one dynamite symphonic performance. (May 2-5, 2013)

The season concludes on a grand note when trumpeter Chris Botti returns to perform with Hamlisch and the PSO. Botti is the best selling jazz artist in the U.S. today, and his success has crossed over to pops audiences. A popular PBS artist, Botti has worked with Frank Sinatra, Sting, Paul Simon, Michael Bublé, Joni Mitchell and Andrea Bocelli. (June 13-16, 2013)

Seven-concert subscriptions range from $117.25 to $652.75, and can be purchased by calling 412.392.4900, or visiting www.pittsburghsymphony.org.

The PSO would like to recognize and thank PNC for its 2012-2013 title sponsorship of the PNC Pops, marking PNC’s 12th consecutive year as title sponsor of this series. The PSO would also like to recognize and thank Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield for its 2012 title sponsorship of Highmark Holiday Pops. Fairmont Pittsburgh is the official hotel of the PSO.
