Christ Church Anglican Hosts 18th C Service

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Dec. 9, 2013
Brownsville's Christ Church Anglican
Plans 18th Century Christmas Service

BROWNSVILLE, PA – To celebrate the holiday season, Christ Church Anglican will present an 18th century Christmas service in the tradition of Brownsville's early settlers, including historical impersonations of its prominent leader, Jacob Bowman, and his family.

The free one-hour service, beginning at 6 p.m., will be held Dec. 21 in the 154-year-old church at 319 Church St. Immediately following the service, the "Bowman family" will retire to their homestead, Nemacolin Castle, to perform Christmas Carols as an added attraction for the Brownsville Historical Society's candlelight tours.

The Koscek Family portray the Bowmans

The Kovscek family of Brownsville will portray the Bowmans. The service will be set in 1805, creating several similarities between the families, including the age of Mark Kovscek who is portraying 43-year-old Jacob.

Kovscek has appeared at several area events as Jacob, employing an English accent. This time, he will perform in Jacob's native tongue, German, with his seven-year-old daughter providing the English translation for an opening German hymn. The prelude also will focus on the church's history, architecture, liturgy and decorations.

Kovscek's wife, Heidi, will play Isabel Bowman, the Irish wife of the esteemed businessman. Portraying the Bowman children is the Kovscek clan: Hannah, 17, as Mary Sterling; Olivia, 15, as Annie Elliott; Emma, 13, as Harriet Elizabeth; Nathanael, 11, as James L.; Ava, 7, as Matilda; and Gloria, 3, as Louisa. Ironically, all but two of their ages match those of the Bowman children in 1805.

"The parallels are fascinating," says Kovscek who, like Bowman, is Senior Warden of the church, the highest lay position.

The Kovsceks and members of the congregation will be dressed in period clothing for the solemn, meditative service, which is taken from the 1789 prayer book of the Anglican Church. The service, led by the Rev. Deacon Don Bowers, will include Christmas carols, the only deviation from the original worship. Jerry Gearhart, Kovscek's father-in-law, is the church organist.

"As a church, we want to do things that are meaningful for the community," Kovscek says. "We want to share the history of our church, spread Christmas cheer and create a memorable celebration of the season."
To further engage the community, Christ Anglican Church is partnering with the Brownsville Historical Society to mark this special event in their shared history. Bowman built the original wing of Nemacolin Castle in 1789 as a trading post. Through the years, his family expanded the structure to 22 rooms as their family and wealth increased.

Christ Church Anglican seats approximately 200. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for the free service.
Brownsville Historical Society is conducting guided candlelight tours at Nemacolin Castle, 136 Front St., through Dec. 29 on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tours are $8 for adults; $4, for children 12 years old and under.

Brownsville Community Clean Up Day

It’s beginning to look a lot like spring, and it’s time for our community to get together and make our town look beautiful.  BARC’s annual cleanup will be held on April 27th 2013 from 9am to 3pm.  Participants will remove litter from our streets, and clean an illegal dumpsite near downtown Brownsville.  Throughout the cleanup a volunteer will be stationed in Snowdon Square to direct community members to the cleanup sites.  Lunch will be provided by Georgio’s Pizza, Fox’s Pizza, and drinks from McDonalds.  Appalachian Coal Country Team Members Sara Goots and Jamie Brackman will be supervising the event, sponsored by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and the Great American Cleanup.  You can register in advance by calling the BARC offices at 724-785-9331.

An illegal dump site has developed around the Dunlap Creek, and participants will remove as much trash as possible from its banks.  Restoring the Dunlap Creek is part of wider redevelopment efforts from the Brownsville Borough and The Redevelopment Authority of the County of Fayette.  Dunlap Creek is one of the key features of the Brownsville Area High School Student in Action Team’s redevelopment plan “Operation Falcon Revitalization.”  BAHS students from the environmental science club will be encouraged to attend by faculty member Kathy Lacek.

In the event of inclement weather, a rain date is scheduled for May 5.

Brownsville Hosts Historic Holiday House Tours

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brownsville's Historic Northside
Hosting Holiday House Tours

BROWNSVILLE, Pa. – Decked out in the grandeur of the holiday season, six historic homes on Brownsville's Northside will be open for guided walking tours Dec. 15-16 for the first time since 2008.

514 Market Street

Interior: 514 Market Street
See inlaid handmade parquet floors and 12 unique bevel-shaped stained-glass windows in an 18-room mansion built in the late 1800's by lumber proprietor George Dawson and soon to be Brownsville's first "bed and breakfast." Step back in time to one of the oldest banks west of the Alleghenies when it opened in 1812, the Monongahela Bank, which was converted in 1882 to a residence. Tour a stately three-story home, built on property once owned by Brownsville's founder Thomas Brown, featuring original stained-glass windows, grand staircase, mahogany wainscoting and third-floor ballroom that's been masterfully transitioned into a "man cave" as part of the top-to-bottom restoration and renovation by the current owners. Gaze at the Monongahela River from the turret of "the Captain's House," the only residence left standing along lower Front Street, built c. 1850 with a spiral staircase and architecturally noteworthy "painted glass" window that frames Nemacolin Castle.

Proceeds from the two-day event will seed a fund earmarked for the acquisition of pole banners for Market Street/Route 40. House tours in 2007 and 2008 funded the purchase and maintenance of flower planters for the Northside as did the 2009 tour of historic churches.

The guided tours will begin at Brownsville Volunteer Fire Co. 1, 520 Market St., where light refreshments will be served after the tour. Tickets will go on sale 30 minutes prior to the start of the tours, which are $15 per person, including a chance to win a wine gift basket. To ensure the best possible experience, there is only one start time each day, with the Dec. 15 tour getting underway promptly at 4 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. Homeowners will welcome each tour group and be available to answer questions about their restorations during the 20-minute stop at each property. Tours will last approximately three hours.
