PITTSBURGH – Prime Stage Theatre is proud to announce the partnership with the YWCA of Pittsburgh and CCAC of Monroeville during the Week Without Violence. PST will present their Highmark sponsored Teen Dating Awareness Program that educates against teen dating violence. The multi-faceted platform raises awareness, encourages, and provides the tools and resources for teens, parents and educators through the arts.

The one-hour presentation will be held on Tuesday, October 15 from 10-1 at the CCAC Boyce Campus located at 595 Beatty Road, Monroeville. It includes the theatrical production of You Belong to Me, an original script written by Debbie Lamedman, in collaboration with Gary Shaw, a teacher at Pittsburg High School in Kansas and his high school students. It is a blend of a first-hand testimony from Ms. Jodi Cuccia, whose daughter was the victim of dating violence, and a theatrical experience.

The program concludes with a Q&A session where the audience gets the opportunity to share their thoughts and ask questions with the cast, teachers and Ms. Cuccia.  The program includes local resources that the audience can contact immediately and confidentially.

TDA is partnered with the Domestic Violence Center of Southwestern PA and endorsed by Futures Without Violence, a national organization whose mission is to prevent and end violence against women and children around the world.

YWCA Addresses Violence Against Women


Violence against women, in its many forms, has no demographic boundaries.  It is known to all age groups, all races, all religions, and all socioeconomic backgrounds.  A woman is battered every 15 seconds in the United States, and 700,000 women are raped every year.  No community is immune, and violence against women is a serious problem around the globe.  According to the World Bank, at least one out of every five women in the world has been physically abused or sexually assaulted.  (Source: YWCA USA Week Without Violence.)

On August 29, 2013, from 12:00-1:00pm, the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Pirates will create emergency kits for greater Pittsburgh domestic violence shelters and organizations.  These kits will contain new/unopened personal hygiene and toiletry items, sorted and stored in individual Ziploc bags, for safe and easy distribution to women and children at the residential facilities and shelters.  Staff/volunteers from the shelters will also be on hand to accept larger household items that will allow women and children to create their own living spaces free from violence and abuse.

The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh asks for your donations during the months of June, July and August for the new/unopened items listed below. Donations will be shared with the following organizations: Alle-Kiski Area Hope Center, Inc.; Crisis Center North; Womansplace, Inc.; Women’s Center and Shelter; and YWCA Women’s Resource Center.

Please deliver all donations to the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh (305 Wood St, downtown Pittsburgh) through 11:00 AM on August 29, 2013:

• New bed sheets (single and double)
• New underwear (boys) and robes (ladies)
• Diapers & pull-ups (all sizes)
• New bath &  hand towels (all colors/sizes)
• Bathroom mats and rugs
• Kitchen towels and utensils
• Silverware, can openers, dishes

• Gas and grocery gift cards
• Educational toys and books (T-5 yrs)
• Travel size soap, shampoo, conditioner
• Deodorant and wash cloths
• Other small personal care hygiene items
• Gently used small appliances (alarm clocks,  hair dryers, coffee makers)
• New child and adult sized PJs

Domestic violence impacts countless women and children in southwestern Pennsylvania; educating the public and providing community resources are critical steps in eliminating abuse.  The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Center for Race and Gender Equity is partnering with the Pittsburgh Pirates to raise awareness about domestic violence in our own region. YWCA and Pittsburgh Pirates Team Up to Raise Awareness About Domestic Violence Prevention

Seeking donations of hygiene/personal care items for domestic violence shelters

PITTSBURGH, PA (August 23, 2012):  The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Pirates are teaming up on August 29 to raise awareness around domestic violence prevention – by creating emergency kits for area domestic violence shelters. Special guests will include a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates team, to assist volunteers in preparing the kits, and the Pirate Parrot, to interact with and excite volunteers and visitors.  The Pirates will also donate tickets for a September game for the shelters to distribute to families.

The organizations are asking for the general public’s help with the donation of new/unopened hygiene and personal care items. People can drop off the donations today through noon on August 29 at any YWCA location:
•         Headquarters – 305 Wood St., Downtown Pittsburgh
•         Homewood-Brushton Community Center – 6907 Frankstown Ave.
•         North Office – Two Allegheny Center, Building Two, 4th floor, Northside Pittsburgh

YWCA receives Verizon grant for anti-violence activities

PITTSBURGH, PA : The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh is pleased to announce a grant of $8,000 from Verizon for the YWCA Week Without Violence.

“We appreciate Verizon’s support of our efforts to bring others together to identify peaceful solutions and take action against the violence in our community,” said Magdeline E. Jensen, CEO, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh.

The YWCA Week Without Violence is an annual campaign that focuses attention on practical, sustainable non-violent alternatives through a week-long series of events. Besides the YWCA, numerous community agencies spearhead and/or are involved in these events. In 2010, activities included promoting safety activities among young children; highlighting ways women and men can work to prevent violence against women; identifying hate crimes and how to report incidents; and presenting youth perspectives on violence and violence prevention.

“On behalf of Verizon, we are pleased to support the YWCA in its mission to break the cycle of violence in the community,” said William B. Carnahan, Vice President-External Affairs, Verizon Pennsylvania. “This event aligns with Verizon’s mission to create safer communities through domestic violence prevention.”
