Emmy Award-winning iQ: smartparent Presents
“The Family Fun Guide” May 26 at 8:30p.m. on WQED-TV

PITTSBURGH— Experts and educators reveal exciting family pastimes that do double-duty: they’re fun and educational. In this demonstration-packed episode of the Emmy Award-winning iQ: smartparent, the focus is on the all-important STEM and STEAM skills that are crucial for 21st century kids – but there’s no reason why mom and dad can’t join in the fun, too.

iQ: smartparent “The Family Fun Guide” premieres Thursday, May 26 at 8:30pm on WQED and is hosted by Darieth Chisolm.
In segments 1 and 2, experts and kids demonstrate the high-tech “treasure hunt” known as geocaching. Lo Hutelmyer of the non-profit Venture Outdoors and Amber Rooke of the Brashear Association are joined by two children from Brashear Kids to explain how the popular pastime of geocaching promotes critical thinking and math skills.
In segment 3, the guest is Brian Stamford, a curriculum expert from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, a branch of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. He shows three fun experiments that blend art and design with science and math exploration.
And in segment 4, guest Shawn Grimes, Director of Technology at Baltimore’s Digital Harbor Foundation, reveals tips for parents and kids to learn and collaborate together in a maker space.
This episode also includes a video segment on STEAM education in schools, and provides tips for more effective key word searches for parents who want to learn more about these topics online.
WQED’s signature parenting series, iQ: smartparent, seeks to empower parents with new knowledge, tools, and abilities to successfully guide their children in the use of 21st century digital media and technology.
WQED launched iQ: smartparent in response to a research study of regional parents (conducted by WQED in spring 2012) who expressed their desire to build their confidence with educational, 21st century media and expand their capacity for co-learning with their digitally savvy children. Through a series of television broadcasts and a robust online community, iQ: smartparent equips parents and caregivers with tools and resources to aid their understanding and use of digital media and technologies for learning.
