Resonance Works and Cello Fury present 8-Cello Sound Fusion​on November 14 in Shadyside PITTSBURGH, PA (10.21.2015)—

RESONANCE WORKS | PITTSBURGH,​a collaborative, multi-modal performing arts company, joins forces with Pittsburgh cello rock powerhouse Cello Fury​for 8-Cello Sound Fusion: Classical,

Rock, and World Music Collide​on November 14 at 8pm at Third Presbyterian Church in Shadyside. Highlights of the program will be a performance of Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 & No. 5 for cello octet and Cello Fury’s original music. Cello Fury​(cellists Nicole Myers, Simon Cummings, and Ben Muñoz, and drummer David Throckmorton) has performed on radio and television, in rock clubs, concert halls, music festivals, and during an NFL halftime show. The band has collaborated with artists across genres, ranging from dance, theater, opera and orchestra as well as with rock bands and singer-songwriters.

“Simon and Nicole performed with our Resonance Chamber Orchestra in our first two seasons, and we were all excited to come up with a Cello Fury-Resonance Works collaboration, and one that would be integrated with a Cello Fury show. All thoughts went immediately to the cello octets of Villa-Lobos” says Resonance Works Artistic Director Maria Sensi Sellner. Between 1930 and 1945, Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos wrote nine varied suites entitled Bachianas Brasileiras​​in homage to baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach, in which he freely adapted baroque harmonic and contrapuntal techniques while exploring the spiritual depths of Brazilian character. Two of these suites, No. 1 and No. 5, were written for “an orchestra of cellos.”

 Joining Nicole, Simon, and Ben of Cello Fury will be Resonance Works artists Hannah Whitehead and Katya Janpoladyan, along with Michael DeBruyn, Adam Liu, and Alexandra Thompson of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 ​includes a soprano solo, and the hauntingly beautiful first movement, Aria (Cantilena), is perhaps the most popular movement from all nine suites. Soprano Meghan Picerno​makes her Resonance Works debut with this performance. This past summer she was a quarterfinalist in Placido Domingo's prestigious Operalia International Vocal Competition in London, and also made her role debut as Gilda, which “spun with such a magnitude of colors and textures that the audience seemed to never want to cease applauding” (Berkshire on Stage).

cellists from three different artistic groups--Resonance Works, Cello Fury, and the Pittsburgh Symphony--coming together to present a one-night only evening of amazing cello music. The audience will be sure to fall in love with the power and beauty of these cello octets performed by a fabulous group of musicians!" says Nicole Myers of Cello Fury. 8-Cello Sound Fusion​​is presented as a part of Resonance Works’ new Resonance Chamber Series​, which includes evenings of chamber music at The Livermore in East Liberty and a performance of Ned Rorem’s Evidence of Things Not Seen in February.

‘WEST SIDE STORY’ FILM WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA NOVEMBER 6-8 AT HEINZ HALL

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, led by guest conductor Jayce Ogren, presents a not-to-be-missed cinematic symphony experience during the second weekend of the 2015-2016 PNC Pops season, November 6-8, at Heinz Hall.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will play Leonard Bernstein's electrifying score and memorable songs (with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) from the iconic and award winning film “West Side Story” live. The newly re-mastered film, directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, will be shown in full high definition on the big screen highlighting Robbins' breathtaking choreography and a screenplay by Ernest Lehman based on the masterful book by Arthur Laurents.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 6; 2:30 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 7; and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 8. Tickets, ranging in price from $24 to $99, can be purchased by calling the Heinz Hall box office at 412-392-4900 or visiting pittsburghsymphony.org/westsidestory.

About the Artists

With mounting success in both symphonic and operatic repertoire, Jayce Ogren is building a reputation as one of the finest young conductors to emerge from the United States in recent seasons. Ogren has led new productions of Benjamin Britten's “Turn of the Screw” and Rossini's “Mosè in Egitto” for the New York City Opera, where he was music director. He conducted the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) in programs at Columbia University's Miller Theatre, Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival, and at the Wien Modern Festival; and all-Stravinsky programs with the New York City Ballet. He debuted with the New York Philharmonic on the CONTACT! Series conducting premieres of New York Philharmonic commissions and led performances of Mozart's “Le Nozze di Figaro” at the Verbier Festival Academy. In Europe, he premiered the film version of Bernstein's “West Side Story” with live orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, an event he repeated with the Detroit Symphony and with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. Returning to London, he conducted the BBC Symphony at the Barbican in the world premiere of Nico Muhly's “Outrage” and European premieres of works by David Lang and Paola Prestini. Ogren holds a bachelor's degree in composition from St. Olaf College and his master's degree in conducting from the New England Conservatory.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, known for its artistic excellence for more than 120 years, is credited with a rich history of the world’s finest conductors and musicians, and a strong commitment to the Pittsburgh region and its citizens. Past music directors have included Fritz Reiner (1938-1948), William Steinberg (1952-1976), Andre Previn (1976-1984), Lorin Maazel (1984-1996) and Mariss Jansons (1995-2004).  This tradition of outstanding international music directors was furthered in fall 2008, when Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck became music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. SINGER/SONGWRITER CHRIS JAMISON OF ‘THE VOICE’ TO APPEAR IN
PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S HIGHMARK HOLIDAY POPS NEXT MONTH

PITTSBURGH – Singer/songwriter and Pittsburgh native Chris Jamison will appear in Highmark Holiday Pops with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall December 11-13 and 19-20.

Jamison is best known for appearing on NBC’s “The Voice,” eventually finishing third with Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine as his coach. Jamison’s first single, “Velvet,” moved more than 77,000 digital downloads during its first week of release, going on to rack up more than 400,000 in downloads. He was signed to Republic Records shortly after the show’s conclusion and is gearing up to release new music.

A graduate of North Hills Senior High School, Jamison has been singing and immersing himself in the world of musical theater since middle school. In fact, Highmark Holiday Pops won’t be his first experience on the Heinz Hall stage: As a member of North Star Kids, he performed in the hall with the late Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Jamison also was a member of the Civic Light Opera Academy before attending Capital University in Ohio.

Jamison will apply his signature pop-meets-soul sound to “Georgia on My Mind” (accompanied by Pittsburgh Symphony members Harold Smoliar on piano, Andy Reamer on percussion and Jeff Grubbs on bass) and “This Christmas” (accompanied by the full orchestra), among other songs, during the Pittsburgh Symphony’s annual holiday pops concerts this December. He will be joined on stage by a variety of other guest stars — including returning favorite Chris Sanders as Santa Claus, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, the Three Rivers Ringers handbell choir and dancers from Attack Theatre — as well as the talented musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and guest conductor (and former Pittsburgh Symphony resident conductor) Daniel Meyer.

A night of holiday music for the whole family, tickets to the Highmark Holiday Pops begin at only $24.
