From the Top Returning to Western Pennsylvania

Popular NPR Show “From the Top” Returning to Western Pennsylvania in October

February taping in Pittsburgh to be re-broadcast on Classical WQEJ-FM 89.7 Saturday, August 4 at 5 p.m.

From the Top, the preeminent showcase for young musicians heard weekly on Classical WQED-FM 89.3 and Classical WQEJ-FM 89.7 in Johnstown is returning to the area on Sunday, October 21 at 3 p.m. at The Palace Theatre in Greensburg. Presented by the Westmoreland Cultural Trust and Seton Hill University, Classical WQED-FM 89.3 Artistic Director Jim Cunningham will host the afternoon taping. Tickets are available from WQED-FM 89.3 for a pledge of support of $40 for a single floor seat, $120 for a family four-pack; $60 for a ticket including bus transportation from WQED to the Palace Theatre,or $180 for a family four-pack including transportation.

The popular NPR program, hosted by Pittsburgh’s own acclaimed pianist Christopher O'Riley features the amazing performances and captivating personal stories of extraordinary young classical musicians from across the country. This past February From the Top came to the Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh to tape an episode presented by the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. This episode which aired nationally the week of March 4 will be re-broadcast on Classical WQED-FM 89.3 and WQEDJ-FM 89.7 Johnstown this Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 5 p.m.

From the Top is heard weekly on Classical WQED-FM 89.3, Classical WQEJ-FM 89.7 in Johnstown, and at wqed.org/fm worldwide Saturdays at 5 p.m.

PSO Concerto Competition Finalists Named; Four to Audition for Honeck in June

PSO CONCERTO COMPETITION FINALISTS NAMED

4 musicians will audition for Music Director Manfred Honeck in June

PITTSBURGH – A violinist from Utah, a cellist from Philadelphia and two pianists from Los Angeles and New York will compete for a chance to perform alongside the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra next season.
The PSO on Tuesday named the four finalists for the Concerto Competition. They are, in alphabetical order:

William Hagen, 19, of Salt Lake City, violin
Benjamin Hopkins, 21, of Los Angeles (hometown Rochester, NY), piano
Manon Hutton-DeWys, 26, of Bronx, NY (hometown Red Hook, NY), piano, and
Angela Park, 25, of Philadelphia (hometown Los Angeles), cello.

The four were named after the public voted last month on the PSO’s YouTube Channel, where the performance videos of eight semi-finalists were posted. The semi-finalists received a total of 22,222 votes during the voting period, April 13-April 30.

Music Director Manfred Honeck

The four finalists will receive round-trip air tickets to Pittsburgh, where they will audition in June at Heinz Hall for Music Director Manfred Honeck. A winner will be named June 12, receive $10,000 and be the guest soloist in the PSO’s BNY Mellon Grand Classics concerts on Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 at Heinz Hall, with Honeck conducting.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition received 104 eligible videos from Feb. 9 to March 22, when eight semi-finalists were chosen. The PSO Concerto Competition allowed instrumental soloists in the United States, unrepresented by management, to upload videos of a performance of selected repertoire on selected instruments to the PSO’s YouTube Channel.

The competition is supported by a $50,000 grant from the PPG Industries Foundation. The PSO would like to thank the PPG Industries Foundation for its support of this concerto competition. The popular NPR program, hosted by Pittsburgh’s own acclaimed pianist Christopher O'Riley, will feature the amazing performances and captivating personal stories of extraordinary young classical musicians from across the country. The broadcast taping features local 17-year-old violist Daniel Orsen from Pittsburgh, performing the fourth movement from Sonata in F-minor by Johannes Brahms, accompanied by host Christopher O’Riley on the piano; and 14-year-old pianist and composer Aleksandr Voinov from Sewickley, Pennsylvania performing Polonaise in A-flat major, Op. 53 by Frédéric Chopin.

Also on the broadcast: 17-year-old euphonium player Grant Jameson from Dublin, Ohio performing “Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms” by Simone Mantia, accompanied by Christopher O’Riley; 16-year-old violinist Kelly Talim from Buffalo Grove, Illinois performing Caprice No.6, "D'après l'Étude en forme de Valse", Op.52 by Camille Saint Saëns, accompanied by Christopher O’Riley. A final performer will be chosen in the coming weeks.
