CALLIOPE PRESENTS

“If you like your blues warm, wise, witty and well-played, give Del Rey a listen.”-Dirty Linen, USA
“Del Rey… channels the spirit of Memphis Minnie while maintaining a thoroughly hip, Left Coast sense of cool.” -Santa Cruz Sentinel, USA

Del Rey started playing guitar when she was four. At the age of fourteen she was introduced to the world of traditional acoustic music. Lou Curtiss, proprietor of Folk Arts Rare Records and artistic director of the San Diego Folk Festival introduced her to living artists like Sam Chatmon, Lydia Mendoza and Howard Armstrong, and to recordings, especially those of the great blues guitarist Memphis Minnie. Her guitar playing is influenced by country blues, stride piano, classic jazz and hillbilly boogie-all filtered through the sensibility of an autodidact trailor-park aesthete.

Thirty years later, when Del Rey became fascinated with the ukulele, she tried to play the same kind of complicated rhythmic blues and ragtime on four strings as she does on six. She expects a lot out of the little instrument, and usually gets it. She takes the ukulele “ to a new level of musicianship.” (John Book)
Her live show is full of complex grooves and sly humor. “Virtuosic in just the right way, which is to say, in order to realize a musical idea. A very nice unlikely blend of things, accessible, slightly nostalgic, but fresh and thoughtful. ” (CD Baby review, “At The Ukeshack #1)

Del Rey plays solo concerts worldwide and also presents a concert/lecture on women musicians called Women in American Music. She collaborates and tours frequently with Austin guitarist Steve James and with fiddler Suzy Thompson. She has contributed to projects in honor of The Mississippi Sheiks, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Johnny Cash. Del Rey has written about music for various publications, including Acoustic Guitar.

Her latest solo album, Four and Six came out in April 2012. She has recorded five solo albums, Blue Uke (Hobemian 2008), When The Levee Breaks (Hobemian 2006), X-Rey Guitar (Hobemian 2000), Hot Sauce (Hobemian 1995) and Boogie Mysterioso (Hobemian 1993). In 2003 she released a collection of performances Del Rey:Live.

Del Rey recorded Hen Party with Suzy Thompson (Hobemian 2010) and the first project of 2011 was a 45rpm record, the proceeds of which benefit Transportation Choices Coalition. She recorded an album of uke ‘n’ bass instrumental duets with Matt Weiner At The Ukeshack #1(Hobemian 2007) and also on uke with The Yes Yes Boys she recorded Why Say No? (Hobemian 2002) With Steve James, Tonight (Hobemian 2004) andTwins (Hobemian 2002). With Del Rey and the Blues Gators she recorded Chartruese (Hobemian 1991) and Cafe Society (Kicking Mule 1985).

CALLIOPE PRESENTS
KRUGER BROTHERS

(Pittsburgh, PA)- Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society welcomes the Kruger Brothers to THE ROOTS CELLAR, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Shadyside, on Thursday, March 27, 2014, 7:30 PM.
More information is available online at www.calliopehouse.org or by contacting the Calliope office at (412) 361-1915. Tickets are $28 / $12 (w/ student ID) *handling fees included.

“The Kruger Brothers are just about as fine a band as I’ve ever played with...
I love to play music with them.” –Doc Watson

In an ever-expanding body of work, Jens Kruger (banjo, vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar, lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass, vocals) personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition.

Although initially staying fairly close to a traditional repertoire, the Kruger Brothers later turned to song writing and composition in order to draw more closely from their personal experiences. The result is a catalog of songs and music distinguished by its rich detail and an insight into the delicacy and complexity of everyday life.

The honesty of their writing has become a hallmark of the trio’s work. Another is the banjo playing and composition of Jens Kruger. Happy Traum has described Kruger as “one of the world’s most musically sophisticated and technically accomplished five-string banjo players.” Kruger plays in a melodic style that, while it may stem from the three-finger bluegrass style popularized by Snuffy Jenkins and Earl Scruggs, is also differentiated by long melodic passages and a more complex compositional foundation, often building on jazz or classical themes and techniques.

The recording that cemented the Kruger Brothers’ sound and song writing, Up 18 North, was released in 2002 on the Double Time label. Included were a number of tracks that signaled the direction that the band was to take in future projects. The title track “Up 18 North” is an instrumental piece, with banjo clearly in the foreground, that remains a prime example of the type of close ensemble playing that characterizes the trio’s work. The vocal track “Carolina in the Fall” is an early example of the very personal, resonant, and mature song writing that they continue to this day.

Most recently their music has ventured further into the themes and forms of classical music, most obviously in their 2011 release, Appalachian Concerto. Through their numerous CD releases, radio and television performances, workshops, and collaborative efforts, the Kruger Brothers continue to provide a unique voice in the world of folk, Americana, and classical music.

HEY MAVIS

(Pittsburgh, PA)- Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society welcomes HEY MAVIS to THE ROOTS CELLAR, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Shadyside, on Thursday, March 20, 2014 7:30 PM.

Tickets are $23 / $12 (w/ student ID) *handling fees included.

“…this crew could single handedly ignite a whole new folk music scare. Killer stuff"
~Midwest Record

“…an Appalachian Americana Roots group who take this genre to new heights."
~House of Mercy, London

With quotes like this, the buzz surrounding Hey Mavis' recent release, Honey Man, is getting louder. It is not just local music fans paying attention anymore. Hey Mavis released Honey Man (their second CD) to a sold-out crowd at Happy Days Lodge in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in February 2013. In the short amount of time since the release, tracks off of the new CD are getting airplay in London, the Netherlands, and all across the US.

If you are unfamiliar with the music of Hey Mavis, it is time you entered their world of “Appalachian Americana.” With banjo, fiddle, upright bass, guitar, kick drum and harmonica, they easily move from a softly orchestrated lullaby to a raw and raucous love song.

Hey Mavis is Laurie Michelle Caner (banjo/vocals/songwriting), Eddie Caner (fiddle/viola), Brent Kirby (guitar/vocals/kick drum/harmonica) and Bryan Thomas (upright bass/Chank-o-matic 6000).

Laurie Michelle Caner lives her songs, every time she sings them. Her banjo playing is of curious origin, but beautifully serves as a strong foundation for her lyrics, lifting the audience out of their world and into hers.

Eddie Caner always amazes the audience with what he can make his fiddle and viola do. He can soar beautifully over Brent and Laurie's vocals or play a dirgey riff that perfectly sets the mood for a somber tune. He has traveled the globe and shared the stage with an endless list of successful and talented musicians (including Jimmy Page and Luciano Pavarotti).
Brent Kirby is a one-man-band on stage. He plays guitar, kick-drum, harmonica and sings, all with the enthusiasm and conviction of a man who knows he is exactly where he should be. Brent’s vocals are smooth and soulful and convey his endless dedication to his music.
Bryan Thomas steals the show every time.  The groove he lays down is the heartbeat of the band. His playing is like this wonderful body-rhythm-bass conversation, accented by his homemade “Chank-o-matic 6000”, a vintage, weathered tambourine affixed to a stand and pedal.

REM/Smithereens/Red Clay Ramblers producer Don Dixon “discovered” Hey Mavis when they were featured on a 2009 Christmas compilation. Four months later, Dixon produced their debut CD, Red Wine. The CD immediately climbed the national Folk DJ-L radio charts, peaking at #5 for overall artist while the songs Red Light and Red Wine peaked at #5 and #9. The CD finished the year at #13 in Folk Alley’s "Top CD's of 2010" alongside new releases by Tim O’Brien, Peter Rowan, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Chieftains, and Bob Dylan.

Laurie was a founding member of the regionally-acclaimed female vocal group "The Rhondas" and has facilitated songwriting workshops at venues such as the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Lakeside, and First Night Akron.

Eddie has performed worldwide with so many amazing artists...there is not enough room here to list them all, but, here are a few:
Guster, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Pete Wernick, Yonder Mountain String Band, Al Jarreau, Carly Simon, Leftover Salmon, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clemens, John Hartford, Tony Rice, Luciano Pavarotti, Mannheim Steamroller, Smokey Robinson, Natalie Cole, Mel Torme, The Moody Blues, Yes, The 3 Irish Tenors, Ray Price, Harry Connick, Jr., Maynard Ferguson, Trey Anastasio, Ekoostik Hookah, Chris Eldridge, Clyde Brooks, Benny Galloway

CALLIOPE PRESENTS

MOLLIE O’BRIEN & RICH MOORE
(Pittsburgh, PA)- Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society welcomes Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore to THE ROOTS CELLAR, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Shadyside, on Thursday, February 13, 2014 7:30 PM.
More information and tickets available online at www.calliopehouse.org or by contacting the Calliope office at (412) 361-1915. Tickets are $28 / $12 (w/ student ID)*handling fees included.

Grammy Award winner Mollie O'Brien became known to the rest of the world as a singer's singer when, in 1988, she and her brother Tim released the first of three critically-acclaimed albums for Sugar Hill Records (Take Me Back, Remember Me and Away Out On The Mountain). Eventually, Mollie recorded five equally well-received solo albums (Tell It True, Big Red Sun and Things I Gave Away for Sugar Hill Records, and I Never Move Too Soon and Everynight In The Week for Resounding Records). Additionally, she was a regular on the nationally-syndicated radio show, “A Prairie Home Companion” from 2001 through 2005. She's long been known as a singer who doesn't recognize a lot of musical boundaries, and audiences love her fluid ability to make herself at home in any genre while never sacrificing the essence of the song she tackles. O’Brien has primarily focused her efforts on the fading art of interpretation and the end result is a singer at the very top of her game who is not afraid to take risks both vocally and in the material she chooses.
Husband Rich Moore has busied himself in the Colorado music scene for many years. While staying home with the kids when Mollie & Tim toured, he held a day job and continued to perform locally with a variety of Colorado favorites, including Pete Wernick and Celeste Krenz. Not only is Moore known to produce some of the funniest onstage running commentary, he's also a powerhouse guitar player who can keep up with O'Brien's twists and turns from blues to traditional folk to jazz to rock and roll. He creates a band with just his guitar and, as a result, theirs is an equal partnership.
O’Brien and Moore’s first duet CD, a live recording titled 900 Baseline (Remington Road Records) was released in 2006. Their first studio project, Saints & Sinners (Remington Road Records), was released to nationwide acclaim in 2010. In January 2014 they'll release their followup, Love Runner (Remington Road Records). Both studio projects were produced by Lyons, CO ace arranger and bassist, Eric Thorin, who often joins them onstage for their live shows. All three CDs showcase their talent for unlocking the secrets to a diverse array of songs in authoritative yet very fun and unusual arrangements.
Most of the tracks on Love Runner have to do with the universal theme of home: leaving it and family behind; missing it; never wanting to go back; finding it in surprising places all over the world; wondering what kind of “home” awaits us in the life after this one. O’Brien and Moore let us know via their choice of material that they are not afraid to take risks. It’s almost as if they’re telling us that at this stage in their lives, they are at home with their musical selves - they can do whatever they want and they don’t care if the rest of the world agrees with them.
To quote the one and only Cher, "In this business, it takes time to be really good." Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore are proof that age is no obstacle to making timeless, original and inventive music.

CALLIOPE PRESENTS
JOHN GORKA

(Pittsburgh, PA)- Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society welcomes John Gorka to THE ROOTS CELLAR, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Shadyside, on Thursday, January 30, 2014, 7:30 PM.

More information is available online at www.calliopehouse.org or by contacting the Calliope office at (412) 361-1915. Tickets are $28 / $12 (w/ student ID) *handling fees included.

From New Jersey, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. Though small, Godfrey Daniels was and is one of the oldest and most venerable music institutions and has long been a hangout for music lovers and aspiring musicians. In the late 1970’s, John was one of these aspiring musicians. Although his academic coursework at Moravian College lay in Philosophy and History, music began to offer paramount enticements. Soon he found himself living in the club’s basement and acting as resident MC and sound man, encountering legendary folk troubadours like Canadian singer-songwriter Stan Rogers, Eric Andersen, Tom Paxton and Claudia Schmidt. Their brand of folk-inspired acoustic music inspired him, and before long he was performing his own songs – mostly as an opener for visiting acts. Soon he started traveling to New York City, where Jack Hardy’s legendary Fast Folk circle (a breeding ground for many a major singer-songwriter) became a powerful source of education and encouragement. Folk meccas like Texas’ Kerrville Folk Festival (where he won the New Folk Award in 1984) and Boston followed, and his stunningly soulful baritone voice and original songwriting began turning heads. Those who had at one time inspired him – Suzanne Vega, Bill Morrissey, Nanci Griffith, Christine Lavin, Shawn Colvin – had become his peers.

In 1987, the young Minnesota-based Red House Records caught wind of John’s talents and released his first album, I Know, to popular and critical acclaim. With unusual drive and focus, John hit the ground running and, when an offer came from Windham Hill’s Will Ackerman in 1989, he signed with that label’s imprint, High Street Records. He proceeded to record five albums with High Street over the next seven years: Land of the Bottom Line, Jack’s Crows, Temporary Road, Out of the Valley and Between Five and Seven. His albums and his touring (over 150 nights a year at times) brought new accolades for his craft. His rich multifaceted songs full of depth, beauty and emotion gained increasing attention from critics and audiences across the country, as well as in Europe where his tours led him through Italy, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Switzerland and Germany. He also started sharing tours with many notable friends—Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter among them. All this brought his music to an ever-widening audience. His video for the single “When She Kisses Me” found a long-term rotation on VH-1’s “Current Country,” as well as on CMT and the Nashville Network.

In 1998, after five successful recordings and seven years at Windham Hill/High Street, John felt the need for a change and decided to return to his musical roots at Red House Records. The choice was driven, in part, by the artistic integrity that the label represents in an industry where the business of music too often takes precedence. The 1998 release After Yesterday marked a decidedly different attitude towards making music for John, and his next release The Company You Keep held fast to his tradition of fine songwriting, yet moved forward down new avenues. Its fourteen songs displays John’s creative use of lyrics and attention to detail. Andy Stochansky played drums and shared production credits with John and Rob Genadek. Ani DiFranco, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucy Kaplansky and Patty Larkin contributed stellar guitar work and vocals to this fan favorite. Old Futures Gone was informed by his life as husband and father of two young children and also contained the colorful experience of many hard years on the road. Writing in the Margins followed in 2006 and was an engaging collection of sweet and serious songs that spanned many musical genres—folk, pop, country and soul—and featured guest vocalists Nanci Griffith, Lucy Kaplansky and Alice Peacock. Now with this, his 11th studio album, he returns to his roots with So Dark You See, his most compelling and traditional album to date.

In addition to his 11 critically acclaimed albums, John released a collector’s edition box featuring a hi-definition DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Windham Hill also released a collection of John’s greatest hits from the label called Pure John Gorka. In 2010, he also released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike, it landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio.

Many well-known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell. John has graced the stage of Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage, etown and has appeared on CNN. His new song “Where No Monuments Stand” is featured in the upcoming documentary Every War Has Two Losers, about activist and Oregon Poet Laureate William Stafford (1914-1993).

CHRISTINE LAVIN & UNCLE BONSAI
JUST ONE ANGEL

(Pittsburgh, PA)- Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society welcomes Christine Lavin & Uncle Bonsai in Just One Angel to THE ROOTS CELLAR, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Shadyside, on Thursday, December 12, 2013, 7:30 PM.

“Christine Lavin is wildly entertaining.” -The New Yorker

“Uncle Bonsai’s exquisite musical detail and subtle needling wit attain a level of craft not often seen in pop”   -The New York Times

Celebrate the holidays at one of the funniest and most musically satisfying concerts you’ll ever experience. Singer-Songwriter Christine Lavin and the Seattle trio Uncle Bonsai share an equally angelic and wicked sense of reality when it comes to the holidays, particularly on behalf of those among us skating on thin ice for most of the season!  Together in concert, they deliver some of the most clever and unflinching lyrics in folk-pop music. So expect fans' favorites and new holiday songs in a concert that coincides with the release of their new recording, Just One Angel, v.2. It’s a sublime and sublimely humorous compilation of original holiday songs by Lavin, Uncle Bonsai and fellow singer-songwriters across the country.

Christine Lavin is the best guest anyone could invite to a holiday party. Her ability to rouse the audience to their feet, to the stage, and to the problem-solving areas of their brains is unmatched. A multi award winning performer, she’s written some of the funniest, sweetest and most lethal songs on relationships, social truths, faux pas, and those devilish thoughts that orbit our minds even about those we love most. While her silver-light voice moves easily to songs of poignant realism, it is clear her audiences come wanting to laugh. She never disappoints. http://www.christinelavin.com/

Seattle super-harmonizers and humorists Uncle Bonsai are the Tim Burtons of folk music – dark and hilarious, but with moments of great insight and beauty.  With three strong voices and a guitar, Bonsai delivers an often dizzying vocal relay in exquisite harmonies, with rapid-fire lyrics on the topic of first-world problems, jobs for America, the creation of the universe, the afterlife, keeping your pets alive, and getting your kids to stay in bed. Like Stephen Sondheim crossed with the Beatles, or Zappa in therapy with Peter, Paul and Mary.  http://www.unclebonsai.com/
