Members of the National Organization of Women (NAWBO) Pittsburgh Chapter
Mourn the Passing of Mary Pam Kilgore as They Celebrate Her Life and Achievements

Mary Pam Kilgore

PITTSBURGH, August 00, 2013 – Mary Pam Kilgore, CMP, President of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Pittsburgh Chapter, 2013-2014, passed away on July  23, 2013, with husband, Robert, daughter, Sarah, and son, Sebastian, by her side at her home in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania, following one of many bouts with metastatic cancer.

Valiant woman that Kilgore was, she refused to let her disease define her. In a recent blog, she wrote, “But I am more than my disease. I am a wife, a mother to two grown children, Sarah and Sebastian. I am a daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, friend, and business owner. I volunteer. I mentor.”

As NAWBO members now mourn Mary Pam’s passing, they celebrate her life as a wife, mother, businesswoman, and as the founder of her firm, Kilgore Events and Meetings. On July 27, 2013, members of the Pittsburgh Chapter held a memorial service in her honor.

Kilgore joined NAWBO in 2005 and steadily contributed to the effectiveness of the organization during her eight years as a member. In 2008, she received the “Make the Connection” award from NAWBO for making organizations assets to the community.  She rose to President Elect of the Pittsburgh Chapter in 2011, and was elected President for the 2013-14 program year.

She was a key player in the success of Hug-a-Thon Pittsburgh 2012 that won feature coverage in Pittsburgh’s news dailies and coverage by the city’s three, top television stations.

Kilgore also maintained active memberships in a number of other organizations, including Meeting Professionals International (MPI), Business Network International (BNI)  South Hills Chamber of Commerce, Washington County Chamber of Commerce, Calliope The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society. Mary Pam was one of the founding volunteers of the annual Pittsburgh Blues Festival Mary Pam was also one for which continued to work throughout 2012

On July 27,2013 at an event at Urban Mountain Gathering Place, NAWBO Greater Pittsburgh awarded Mary Pam Kilgore the Gillian Rudd Founder’s Award.

Gillian Rudd Founder's Award

Nationally, NAWBO Gillian Rudd Business Leadership Award recognizes a woman business owner who has made a significant contribution to the status and visibility of women-owned firms and to the empowerment of women entrepreneurs both nationally and internationally. This award was named after Gillian Rudd, who served as NAWBO’s national president (1987-88) and contributed both strategy and personal charm to NAWBO’s early political advocacy activities. She also was instrumental in helping NAWBO establish the National Foundation for Women Business Owners—now known as the Center for Women’s Business Research.

NAWBO Greater Pittsburgh Gives the Gillian Rudd Founder's Award in the same vein, as this award is for someone who contributes unselfishly -- both to NAWBO and the business and nonprofit community.

The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) propels women entrepreneurs into economic, social and political spheres of power worldwide by: Strengthening the wealth creating capacity of our members and promoting economic development within the entrepreneurial community; creating innovative and effective change in the business culture; building strategic alliances, coalitions and affiliations; and transforming public policy and influencing opinion makers.

The Greater Pittsburgh Chapter is the fifth oldest chapter in the country, established in 1975.

Women-Owned Businesses on the Upswing, Positive Economic Impact

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Census Data Reinforces the Economic Power of Women-Owned Businesses in the U.S. Says NAWBO

(July 15, 2010)—Preliminary results released this week by the U. S. Census Bureau from the 2007 Survey of Business Owners (SBO) show an increase of 20.1 percent in women-owned businesses since 2002, accounting for 7.8 million non-farm U. S. businesses. In 2007, women-owned firms held 28.7 percent of all non-farm businesses in the United States, 6.4 percent of total employment and 4.0 percent of total receipts. The SBO Survey defines women-owned businesses as firms in which women own 51 percent or more of the stock or equity of the business.

A 2010 Member Survey by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) indicates the trend will continue, not only in women starting new businesses, but also in the growth and expansion of existing businesses. The NAWBO survey shows 34 percent of members expected to hire new workers and 21 percent planned to increase capital investment in 2010.

This is good news for the women's business community and the economy at large. "In the past decade, the number of privately owned companies started by women in America has increased twice as fast as the number owned by men," said NAWBO President and CEO Helen Han. "Even in the current business landscape where all businesses are forced to do more with less, and for less, women business owners are holding their own and contributing significantly to the overall economy."

NAWBO believes there are many reasons for the success of women-owned businesses. "Women business owners are often very resilient because of the challenges they face in starting and growing their businesses," said NAWBO Chair Kelly Scanlon. "Women also have a natural aptitude for business marketing and tend to be more creative and grassroots in their campaigns—all key to helping them thrive."

Other notable highlights of the SBO survey include:

In 2007, 31.9 percent of women-owned firms operated in the repair, maintenance, personal and laundry services industries and the health care and social assistance industries. Women-owned firms accounted for 45.2 percent of all U.S. businesses in these industries. Wholesale trade and retail trade accounted for 36.2 percent of women-owned business revenue.

California had the most women-owned firms at 1 million (13.3 percent of all such firms), with receipts of $181.5 billion (15.2 percent of all women-owned firm receipts). Texas was second with 610,279 women-owned firms or 7.8 percent, with receipts of $96.8 billion or 8.1 percent. New York followed, accounting for 7.6 percent of all women-owned firms, and 7.1 percent of receipts.

In 2007, there were 911,285 women-owned employer firms. These firms employed 7.6 million persons with a total payroll of $218.1 billion, an increase of 6.2 percent and 25.7 percent respectively from 2002. In 2007, these firms generated $1.0 trillion in receipts, an increase of 25.9 percent.

WOMEN OWNED BUSINESSES BOOSTING EMPLOYMENT RATE
Associations Assist in Business Growth, Growth Generates More Jobs

Pittsburgh, Pa. (October 2, 2009) – Ana Recio Harvey, Director of the Small Business Association’s (SBA) Office of Women’s Business Ownership, will be on a Women Business Owners Advocacy panel hosted by the National Association of Women Business Owners at the 3rd Annual NAWBO Day Friday, October 2, at the Greentree Radisson Hotel, at 10 AM.

According to the Department of Labor, in 2008 the economy lost 62,000 non-farm jobs. Yet it has been reported that there are now over 27.5 million people working for women-owned firms. Statistics show female owned businesses out employing Fortune 500 companies by 30 percent.

"It is imperative that the financial and government communities understand both the tremendous present economic contributions and future potential of women-owned businesses," says Gillian Rudd, NFWBO chair.

It is the goal of the Small Business Association to promote company growth in women owned businesses, which in turn generates more jobs and improves the economy. Ana Recio Harvey’s responsibility as Director of the SBA’s Office of Women’s Business Ownership is to oversee this effort by managing a network of women business centers across the country. Harvey ensures that these business centers have programs that provide training and counseling, opportunities, and access to capital.

Harvey has a personal understanding of what it takes to grow a business. She grew her translation business from a one person company that translated English to Spanish to a 75 employee, certified multilingual communications company. Her business grew to serve the government, nonprofits and some of the top 500 businesses in the US.

The NAWBO Day Women Business Owners Advocacy Panel will afford the opportunity for female entrepreneurs to discover how they can continue boosting the US Economy by growing their businesses. It will also be an opportunity for these entrepreneurs to express their issues to representatives of organizations that exist to make such growth possible.

In addition to the advocacy panel discussion, NAWBO Day includes speakers, workshops, and a trade show, designed to inform business owners. Whether just starting or seeking growth, struggling or soaring, a large corporation or a consultant in any industry, this event is suited to equip Entrepreneurs.

It was largely due to the efforts of the National Association of Women Business Owners that after 1989 women were finally acknowledged as business owners. NAWBO continues to provide support to and advocacy for women entrepreneurs. The Pittsburgh chapter is the 5th oldest in the nation and the only chapter that has a City Council and Mayor designated NAWBO Day.

Wells Fargo, National Association of Women Business Owners Award

Chicago, IL – Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) and the National Association of Women Business Owners® (NAWBO®) will recognize three women-owned businesses with the 8th annual NAWBO/Wells Fargo Trailblazer Award. The award demonstrates the two organization’s long-standing commitment to the success of women-owned businesses. Each winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and be honored at NAWBO’s 2009 Women’s Business Conference in Chicago on June 25.

The Trailblazer award is part of Wells Fargo’s Women Business Services program. The program forms key national and community relationships, conducts primary research, sponsors events, and provides financial information and resources to support the success of women-owned businesses. Since 1995, Wells Fargo has loaned more than $34 billion to women business owners nationwide.

The winners were selected from a nationwide pool of applicants and evaluated on their companies’ business performance, innovation, growth, and service to the community.

This year’s winners are:

· Wayzata, Minn. – based Hope Chest for Breast Cancer, sells donated upscale furniture, designer clothing and decorative accessories through two retail stores in Minnesota. Owners Romy Taormina and Carla Falcone will be honored.

· DeSoto, Tx. – based Warrior Group is a construction services business providing construction and project management for permanent modular and conventional construction projects. The company has pioneered new building techniques, including a proprietary lifting and setting method for placing and securing buildings on foundations. In 2007, owner Gail Warrior-Lawrence, who will accept the award, started the Heart of a Warrior Charitable Foundation to provide educational enrichment programs for underserved children in Texas.

“It is our honor to recognize these three women-owned businesses with the Trailblazer award,” said Joy Ott, regional president for Wells Fargo in Montana and National Spokesperson for Women Business Services program.
