YWCA Announces the 2013 Racial Justice Award Recipients
Awards presented on Wednesday, November 13

PITTSBURGH, PA (November 7, 2013):  The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh is pleased to announce the 2013 Racial Justice Award recipients.  The seven awardees will be recognized at the 22nd Annual Racial Justice Awards Dinner on Wednesday, November 13.   Award recipients include:

ARTS: janera solomon, Executive Director, Kelly Strayhorn Theater
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Melanie R. Brown, Education Program Officer, The Heinz Endowments
EDUCATION: Marcus Rediker, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Atlantic History, University of Pittsburgh
GOVERNMENT: The Pennsylvania Interbranch Commission for Gender, Racial and Ethnic Fairness
FAITH: East Liberty Presbyterian Church
LEGAL: Education Law Center, Western Pennsylvania Office
YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT: Alexis K. Marie Payne, Writer/Literary Arts Student, Pittsburgh CAPA Class of 2015

“We are delighted to present the YWCA Racial Justice Award to these recipients in recognition of their efforts to promote equality and justice,” said Magdeline E. Jensen, Chief Executive Officer, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh.  “Their outstanding initiative, dedication to eliminating racism, and the impact they’ve had on the community clearly stood out for the 2013 award.”

The 22nd Annual Racial Justice Awards Dinner takes place on Wednesday, November 13, at the Westin Hotel, 1000 Penn Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m., and the dinner and award program follow at 6:30 p.m. Robert Hill is this year’s Honorary Chair, and WPXI-TV’s Vince Sims will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. Dito van Reigersberg of Pig Iron Theatre Company pays homage to Spanish poet, playwright and theater director Federico García Lorca in this tour de force one-man play.


Poet takes place in 1929 as a broken-hearted Lorca arrives in New York City to find a whirlwind of Harlem blues, looming skyscrapers, and stock market disasters.


Pig Iron founder Dito van Reigersberg plays nine characters, from a volcanic Salvador Dalí to Harlem blues-singer Victoria Spivey to the ghost of Walt Whitman, in a unique evening of dance-theater that has become one of Pig Iron’s signature works.”

Founded in 1995 as an interdisciplinary ensemble, Pig Iron Theatre Company is dedicated to the creation of new and exuberant performance works that defy easy categorization. In the part 14 years the company has created 24 original works and has toured festivals and theatres in England, Scotland, Poland, Lithuania, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Romania and Germany. Originally from Huntsville, Alabama, the six-man a capella group Committed, brings their spirit and style to the Elsie H. Hillman Auditorium for an evening of outstanding vocal performance! Committed began producing their debut self-titled album after winning first prize during the second season of NBC's The Sing Off.

Committed ends the 1st Annual Juneteenth Festival, a packed day of free activities and performances featuring a marketplace by the Ujamaa Collective at the Hill House.
