PITTSBURGH, PA. - The third annual VIA Music & New Media Festival continues its tradition of unique performances featuring emerging musicians and new media artists. Spanning an entire week, over 50 local, national and international artists representing 4 countries converge in Pittsburgh for a/v performances, workshops, and interactive events that blend the best of nightlife and arts culture. Re-framing city spaces, the 6-day festival shows off a thoughtful cross-section of venues that are uniquely Pittsburgh: from riverways to museums, clubs, and transformed pop-up spaces. A number of free, all-ages events support ticketed programs. Emphasizing VIA’s literal meaning of “by way of, or passing through” the festival encourages Pittsburgh as a nexus for young artists on the borders of music, art, and technology.

FE Gallery 6pm, Free all-ages
Festival week kicks off in Lawrenceville with “3D Burns”, an exhibition of experimental animation at FE Gallery curated for VIA by NYC artists Michael Mallis and Katie Torn. Featuring work from internationally recognized artists who use the latest technology in 3D computer graphics software: featuring Brenna Murphy, Claudia Hart, Dusan Lazic, Hooliganship (Peter Burr), James
Duesing, Jeremy Couillard, Jonathan Monaghan, Zeitguised, plus Torn and Mallis’ own work.
40th St Bridge 8pm, Free all-ages
Tours of Azimuth, a recently discovered crash site along the shores of the Allegheny river, set sail at
8pm under the 40th Street Bridge. RSVP instructions and will be announced the week proceeding. Tours provided by the creators behind The Drift, a project by Carnegie Mellon University MFA students and recipient of a prestigious Sprout Seed Award.

A casual evening of talks and experiments in paracinema with film theorist Jonathan Walley and
CMU Professor of Art Melissa Ragona. RSVP required.
Warhol Museum, 8pm Ticketed all-ages
Presented in partnership with the Warhol Sound Series, Los Angeles-based composer / multi- instrumentalist Julia Holter (RVNG Intl), blurs boundaries between indie folk, modern composition, and electronic music. Pittsburgh’s The Garment District, aka former Ladybug Transistor front-woman Jennifer Baron, opens the shoq backed by a collaborative video reel by Baron and Pittsburgh artists Keith
Tassick, Albert Birney, and Ryan Emmett.
WEDNESDAY OCT 3
Pittsburgh Filmmakers, 7pm, Ticketed 18+
Halloween comes early with Manchester’s Demdike Stare (Modern Love) live re-scoring one of the most visually stunning erotic horror films of all time, Jean Rollin’s surrealist La Vampire Nue (1970). Demdike’s live shows soundtrack a journey through the visual and aural archive of the last 50 years, where genre obfuscation becomes the norm.
Brillobox, 10pm, Ticketed 21+
Demdike’s show is complemented by an afterparty with Modern Love labelmate Andy Stott. Stott’s sludgy, dramatic productions have been described by Pitchfork as sounding “like hellish vultures picking over the carcass of dance music.” Joining the bill is Three Legged Race, alias Robert Beatty, longtime member of Lexington KY noise champions Hair Police and Nate Young of Wolf Eyes,
Paris/Nancy-based LAFIDKI, and Drainolith (Spectrum Spools, Montreal). Pittsburgh filmmaker Ben Hernstrom (Ambulantic Videoworks) creates October-appropriate visuals to bring Wednesday’s dark vibe full circle.

VIA’s newly opened space, 6119, presents a selection of artists exploring the borders of bass music and hip-hop with Toronto’s experimental turntablist SlowPitch, Night Slugs’ breakout London DJ/ producer Girl Unit, Brooklyn’s groundbreaking queer rapper Le1f, and Montreal dancehall producer Poirier, all meshed with live VJing from budding Pittsburgh video artists Di-ay Battad, Kevin Ramser, and Audra Wist.
FRIDAY OCT 5

A wide range of non-tradiitonal workshops kickoff today’s programming. Gender-bending pioneers
of glitter-punk downtrod-disco SSION join local drag celebrity Alaska Thvnderfvk for a live taping of Trans-Q TV at CMU. The Shadow Lounge hosts a teen-centric Q&A and demos with Chicago juke
/ footwork pioneers DJS Spinn, Rashad and Manny. The interaction design firm Deep Local (founded by an artist who was better known for leading a punk-metal band called Creation is Crucifixion and subversive media arts group, Carbon Defense League) hosts Brooklyn gaming collective Babycastles for the first of a 2-day build your own arcade marathon.

Evening a/v performances begin with a free IRL seminar and Pittsburgh premiere of New Ages 3: Incite! Journal of Experimental Media at 6119. New Ages 3 explores a revived interest in spiritualism, fan culture, and self-help through the lens of Web 2.0 culture. Featuring performances and videos by new media artists Jacob Ciocci, Ryder Ripps, Jeremy Bailey, Shana Moulton, Jesse MacLean among others. The night also includes videos such “Galaxies” (1974) by pioneering computer-artist
Lillian Schwartz.
6000 Penn (former PNC Bank) & 6119 11pm, Ticketed 18+
Probably the most diverse lineup of the festival, SSION join Spinn & Rashad, the enigmatic disco- house duo of Tiger & Woods, and Zuzuka Poderosa’s post-modern brand of baile funk for a high energy night at VIA’s pop-up location. Visuals and interactive installations are rendered by new media artists Jeremy Bailey, Katie Torn, Timothy Sherman, Scott Andrew and Michael Mallis. Local techno outfit, Humanaut curates the official after-party featuring LA-based producer and former Detroit Underground Resistance member Santiago Salazar.

The afternoon opens with art + technology workshops presented by ASSEMBLE, featuring a creative cast of teachers from a 13 year old girl who can school you in Scratch to a continuation of free programming: Babycastles’ indie arcade will be open for exploring and playing.

An interactive theater showcase features recent MFA students from Chicago and Pittsburgh exploring the human body relationship to technology: Robotcowboy, Mikey McParlane and Erica Gressman.

The last night of VIA gives legends and newcomers equal billing; beginning with PA-based Daughn Gibson, who sings lonely trucker’s tales with 21st century production savvy. LIke Burial meeting up with Lee Hazelwood, Gibson starts the night with his miniature, narrative epics. Brooklyn’s Gatekeeper ups the tempo with their smoky EBM, who create an immersive, multimedia experience with their latest
EP Exo - presented alongside a custom virtual gaming environment. Moombahton duo Nadastrom
steadily increase heart rates until the Detroit legend, Kenny Dixon Junior aka Moodymann, takes the stage. The producer has successfully transported his world of 8-mile roller rinks to the world stage. Making dusty soul samples into undeniable house loops, KDJ doesn’t make tracks, he makes classics.
Visual artists Andrew Benson, Thunder Horse Video, and Pittsburgh’s Chris Smalley craft unique visual for each set, ranging from analog experiments in 16mm film to hi-def, audience interactive environments that playfully exploit technology like iPhones and the Kinect. An afterparty at 6119 is curated by LA-based label 100% Silk, features Magic Touch, ITAL, Laurel Halo, and M. Geddes Gengris, house music producers with unlikely roots in punk and noise, with visuals by emerging Pittsburgh video artist Ben Tabas.
VIA’s first two years also merited international acclaim from sources such as Resident Advisor (Top 10 Festival 2010, 2011, 2012), Interview, Dazed & Confused, Dummy Magazine, and National Geographic Traveler; as well as being celebrated locally by the Pittsburgh City Council (VIA Week), the Sprout Fund (2010 Sprout Seed Award), CityPaper, and other outlets.
The VIA Music & New Media Festival was founded and is run by a group of young Pittsburgh- based artists and promoters known collectively as VIA, a 100% volunteer-run effort.
