WQED PARTNERS WITH ART OF DEMOCRACY FOR THINK!

Public is invited to two community forums October 27 and 29
to kick off first topic: Guns in a Free Society

PITTSBURGH -- WQED partners with the Art of Democracy and the League of Women Voters on the first of an ambitious original series of multi-platform (in-person, online, social media and broadcast) initiatives beginning with the role of guns in a free society.

THINK! is a call to action – and interaction – that invites a broad spectrum of voices and organizations to join together and collaborate around issues that confound and divide us.
The first topic in this ongoing series is Guns in a Free Society.  Our conversations will not focus on politics or Second Amendment issues. Instead, we hope to explore productive ideas for living with guns in a free society.
The discussions will focus on the following three areas:
·       Mental Health and Guns
·       Promoting Gun Safety as a Cultural Norm

  • The Economic Impact of Guns in Our Communities
About Think!
THINK! seeks to optimize public interaction, and, to do so, WQED is partnering with the Art of Democracy, an award-winning organization that fosters informed and inclusive public engagement. The Art of Democracy, working closely with WQED, is developing a community engagement process that will enlist a diverse and inclusive group of civic organizations.
Our community partner for Guns in a Free Society is the League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh. This historic organization is a dedicated proponent of strategies that will increase gun safety and reduce gun violence.
WQED will spread the word and encourage participation in thoughtful, productive conversations that matter to the entire community. Those conversations will happen at our virtual public square at www.wqed.org/think, in the social media realm and in real time, at face-to-face community forums.
The many voices taking part in the initiative will coalesce in hour-long broadcast specials from the WQED studios where experts, civic leaders and community members come together.
Think! Guns in a Free Society premieres November 17 at 8pm on WQED-TV with host Chris Moore.

Subsequent topics in the Think! initiative will examine criminal justice reform, followed by a third topic that will be chosen as the project progresses.

The public is invited to join the conversation at one of two community forums by registering to attend at www.wqed.org/think

Work Against Violence
Week Without Violence: October 16 – 22, 2016

PITTSBURGH, PA (October 13, 2016):  YWCA Greater Pittsburgh invites the public to work against violence during the 21st annual Week Without Violence: October 16 – 22, 2016.

The Week Without Violence is a signature initiative created by the YWCA USA 21 years ago to mobilize people in communities across the United States against all forms of violence, wherever it occurs. YWCA Greater Pittsburgh joins YWCAs nationwide in hosting local Week Without Violence events that raise awareness about and put an end to violence in all forms.

“The facts are appalling,” said Chaz Kellem, Senior Director of Advocacy for Race and Gender Equity, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh. Kellem refers to the statistic showing that 46 women are shot to death every month by a current or former partner in domestic violence-related homicides. “This week, choose to stand up. We cannot continue to lose our family and friends to violence.”

“Violence should not be the answer to our problems,” said Magdeline E. Jensen, Chief Executive Officer, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh. “As a community, we must come together and look for alternative solutions. That’s what the Week Without Violence is all about. I urge everyone to get involved.”

YWCA Week Without Violence gives you practical, sustainable, non-violent alternatives through a week-long series of events. For more information, call 412-255-1466 or go to ywcapgh.org.
