About the Performance
Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata – the fallen woman- is a compelling tale of love, intrigue, money and power in 19th century France.  La traviata tells the heart wrenching story of courtesan Violetta ValĂ©ry, played by Pittsburgh favorite Danielle Pastin, last seen here in 2015’s Cosi fan tutte.  Like so many of Verdi’s works, La traviata explores grand themes through intimate family drama. Alfredo Germont – played by Cody Austin in his Pittsburgh Opera debut – wins Violetta’s love and his father’s displeasure. His father, going behind Alfredo’s back, coerces Violetta into breaking up with Alfredo because their relationship threatens his daughter’s engagement and his family’s reputation.  Violetta will not disclose his father’s role in their breakup, so Alfredo erroneously believes she loves someone else. He publicly denounces her, leaving them both grief-stricken. Will they reconcile before it’s too late?  From the rousing “Brindisi” drinking song to touching arias, La traviata’s singing and music are sure to delight.  Music Director Antony Walker conducts the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Chas Rader-Shieber directs.

About the Performance
The name “Pilobolus” is synonymous with inventive, groundbreaking work. In signature style, Pilobolus does it once again with the intimate and imaginative full-length work, Shadowland.  Possessing the fluidity of an unsettling dream, a young girl’s surreal world comes to life in this provocative dance drama. Shadowland transports audiences to her room in the thick of night, where the fantastical power of the dark unleashes a fantasy world in unexpected and utterly thrilling ways. The first theatrical event of its kind, Shadowland is a dance hybrid spiked with shadow theater, a bawdy circus with bold visual elements. With Shadowland, Pilobolus exposes an off-beat coming of age story that is both dramatic and comedic.

Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA
is written in the stars July 26-31

The timeless story of forbidden love to make
Pittsburgh CLO debut at the Benedum Center!
Pittsburgh, PA ∙ July 15, 2016 – A gripping tragedy of love that transcends all, Elton John and Tim Rice’s AIDA follows a courageous Nubian princess as she is forced to choose between passion and allegiance.  This poignant musical featuresHAMILTON’s own Emmy Raver-Lampman as Aida and Broadway’s Mark Evans as Radames.
Two strangers peruse a museum exhibit and are suddenly transported to Ancient Egypt where they meet as Aida, an enslaved Nubian princess, and Radames, an Egyptian soldier betrothed to the Pharaoh’s daughter. As their epic story draws to a close, our pair of strangers resume their visit to the museum where they find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other. Pittsburgh Cultural Trust
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has overseen one of Pittsburgh’s most historic transformations: turning a seedy red-light district into a magnet destination for arts lovers, residents, visitors, and business owners. Founded in 1984, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a non-profit arts organization whose mission is the cultural and economic revitalization of a 14-block arts and entertainment/residential neighborhood called the Cultural District. The District is one of the country’s largest land masses “curated” by a single nonprofit arts organization. A major catalytic force in the city, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a unique model of how public-private partnerships can reinvent a city with authenticity, innovation and creativity. Using the arts as an economic catalyst, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has holistically created a world-renowned Cultural District that is revitalizing the city, improving the regional economy and enhancing Pittsburgh’s quality of life. Thanks to the support of foundations, corporations, government agencies and thousands of private citizens, the Cultural Trust stands as a national model of urban redevelopment through the arts.
