WQED to premiere cooking shows in November and December for the holiday season

PITTSBURGH—Join us for any of our upcoming cooking programs! We kick off November with a new cooking marathon, follow it up with the last episode in the three-part series of Sendall Style, cap it off with a behind-the-scenes look at chefs and restaurants of Pittsburgh, go back into the archives for some Cookbook Favorites and lastly, continue on with Memories From the Table in late December.

Holiday Sides premieres Saturday, November 16 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and will encore from 1-4 p.m. As everyone knows, the turkey, roast beef, ham, or other main course may get top billing but what we look forward to the most are the side dishes that become family traditions throughout the years. Side dishes are not just for Thanksgiving or Christmas day meals. There are family favorites associated with every holiday from New Year’s Day to the 4th of July and Passover to Chanukah.
WQED asked viewers to send in their favorite side dish recipes and we’ve filled a whole new cookbook that will be available as a gift for membership in WQED. Several of the people who sent in recipes will be with us in the studio to demonstrate dishes like Sour Mushroom Soup, Pumpkin Dumplings, Sweet Potato Soufflé, Noodle Kugle and Baked Artichoke Hearts.
For those looking for some holiday cooking inspiration, tune in on Thursday, November 21 at 8 p.m. for Sendall Style: No Bones About It. November’s all-American feast gets the Sendall treatment with a turkey that’s anything but traditional. Bob Sendall shows us how to “deconstruct” a turkey from wings to wishbone, creating a delicious main dish that’s easier than it looks. But there’s more to the holiday than talking turkey, so Bob gives us tips on delicious sides and special decorations to make your gathering extra special. After the premiere ends, the program will encore at 8:30 p.m. For those who missed previous episodes of Sendall Style: “Farm Fresh” and “Paella Party” will repeat on Saturday, November 23 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Also on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, the Sendall Style: No Bones About It will encore at 8 and 9:30 p.m.
On Thursday, November 28 at 8:30 p.m. join us as we take a closer look at a few of Pittsburgh’s most gifted and dedicated chefs in a sixty-minute special, Behind the Line. In the restaurant business, “the line” is what separates the cooking staff from the front of the house. Normally, only chefs go “behind the line.” But in this documentary, Chris Fennimore takes viewers inside the kitchens of some of the Pittsburgh region’s most talented chefs to see what feeds their passion for creative cooking.
On Saturday, December 8 at 10 a.m. we’re back in the kitchen with Chris Fennimore as he goes into the archives to retrieve some of the most popular holiday recipes from past specials. We’ll show excerpts from Gifts from the Kitchen, H Is for Holiday Cooking, Cookie Table, Feast of the Seven Fishes, and C Is for Chocolate. Then viewers will have a chance to get a special deal on the cookbooks that are sure to be popular holiday gifts.
Later that month, join us for Memories From the Table, which premieres at Thursday, December 19 at 8 p.m. This documentary celebrates our deep connections to food through family, friends, and traditions. Featured segments include a yearly gathering to make pierogi for Christmas, a student’s tribute to the culinary delights of her Italian and Hispanic grandmothers, a group of fraternity brothers who conduct an annual sausage making event, and more.
