PITTSBURGH—WQED’s iQ: smartmedia initiative premieres the fourth episode of iQ: smartparent on Thursday, August 29 at 8 p.m. on WQED-TV.

Episode 4: Tune In, Tune Out will explore the impact that TV, movies, and music have on children’s behavior and ways that both parents and kids “tune in” and “tune out” of these powerful messages.

She is best known as the creator and executive producer of acclaimed children’s television hits such as Blue’s Clues on Nick Jr. and Super Why! and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood on PBS KIDS. Founding partner and chief creative officer of Out of the Blue Enterprises, LLC, Santomero oversees the creative development and research of all the company’s projects, with a mission and vision to bring educational entertainment to a whole new level. Santomero is also host of PBS’ The Parent Show at PBSparents.org and writes a personal blog about being a parent who creates children’s media at AngelasClues.com.

• and Steven Martino, behavioral scientist for RAND Corporation.

The episode will also be available at www.wqed.org/smartparent following the on-air premiere.

Encore broadcasts of the first four episodes are scheduled for Sunday, September 8 at 2:30, 3:30, 4:30, and 5:30 p.m. on WQED-TV.

WQED launched iQ: smartparent in response to a research study of regional parents (conducted by WQED in spring 2012) who expressed their desire to build their confidence with educational, 21st century media and expand their capacity for co-learning with their digitally savvy children. Through a series of six broadcasts and a robust online community iQ: smartparent equips parents and caregivers with tools and resources to aid their understanding and use of digital media and technologies for learning. To sign up for more information go to http://www.wqed.org/smartparent.

The first three iQ: smartparent episodes aired in February, April and June:

• Episode #1 Learning with Games
Can video and online games be positive learning tools for kids? This episode of iQ: smartparent will explore different ways that children learn through gaming and how parents can enhance the educational impact of video and online games for their children.

• Episode #2 Girls Growing Up With Media
How are girls portrayed in the media? How does this impact their decisions, behaviors, and sense of self? Join us as we explore these topics and offer some advice on how to talk with your children about gender inequity in the media.

• Episode #3 Health, Wellness and Technology
Can technology and digital devices contribute to our health and wellness? Join us as we identify apps, games, and other forms of media that can help parents and children stay fit and enjoy the outdoors!

Join us for an eye-opening discussion on how parents and children can have safe and positive experiences online.

All six broadcasts and the initiative benefit from the expertise of Common Sense Media, the leading non-profit organization dedicated to helping parents find age-appropriate, quality media.
