YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Ranks Second
Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community Helps Pittsburgh Nonprofits Raise $500,000

PITTSBURGH, PA (August 7, 2014):  YWCA Greater Pittsburgh raised $24,324 in its first year as a Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community participant. The YW’s efforts ranked as the second top fundraising nonprofit for the Pittsburgh Walk and fifth in all of Pennsylvania. Over 160 staff and board members, as well as friends and family, formed the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh team to raise money for the YW’s programs and services.

YWCA Greater Pittsburgh CEO Magdeline Jensen said, “I am so pleased with the impressive accomplishments of our staff, board and volunteers during our first year participating in the walk. They all rose to the occasion and demonstrated support for the organization they care about.”

The Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community in Pittsburgh provided an opportunity for the community to support 69 local nonprofits on May 17th, 2014. The primary goal of the walk, which includes both a 5K route and a one-mile fun walk option, is to help charitable health and human service organizations raise money for their individual missions. Highmark underwrites all of the costs associated with the walks, so 100 percent of funds raised by community members are donated to the charity they select. The Pittsburgh walk raised approximately $501,700 through the participation of 8,500 walkers.

They are role models for us all – and for future generations of women.”

This year was particularly challenging for the Tribute to Women Selection Committee. Included among the nominees were two women – M.J. Tocci and Laurel Y. Ragland – who are no longer with us. In addition to the Education Award to M.J. Tocci, the committee gave Special Recognition to Laurel Y. Ragland, recent Chief Financial Officer of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation.

Since then, the YWCA has honored the accomplishments of more than 200 exceptional women, saluting them for helping to shape the direction of our region and improve the lives of others.

The Allerton Award, named after the first president of the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh, Mrs. O.H. Allerton, was created to honor a woman for lifetime achievement.  Mrs. Allerton served as president of the YWCA’s board on three separate terms; from 1878 to 1881, 1895 to 1896, and 1915 to 1916.  This special award is given, at the discretion of the Selection Committee and with approval of the YWCA Board of Directors, to a woman who epitomizes the philosophies and concepts of the YWCA.  This year’s Allerton Award recipient, Mary Kay Poppenberg, is only the 13th such recipient of this honor since the inception of Tribute to Women.

Peggy Finnegan, co-anchor for WPXI Channel 11 News at 5 and 6 p.m., will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies during the luncheon. Ms. Finnegan received a Tribute to Women Leadership Award in 1997 in the Communications category.

Three Organizations Host Film Screening About Modern Day Slavery on March 19
Followed by a panel discussion with local experts

PITTSBURGH, PA (March 11, 2014):  Human trafficking and other forms of modern day slavery are present in the United States – and even Western Pennsylvania. To bring awareness to this issue, there will be a special salon screening of “Not My Life,” the first documentary to depict the cruel and dehumanizing practices of human trafficking and modern slavery on a global scale, followed by a panel discussion on Wednesday, March 19.

The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh, World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh and Bricolage Production Company have joined together to show this film in recognition of International Women’s Day. The event is supported by the Eden Hall Foundation.

The program takes place from 5-7 p.m. at Bricolage Production Company, 937 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Seating is limited, and registration is required. There is no charge for this event. Refreshments are included. To register, visit www.worldpittsburgh.org or call 412-281-7970.

Following the film screening, a panel of local experts will address “Understanding Modern Day Slavery: Pittsburgh’s Role in Finding a Solution.” Deb Acklin, President and CEO of WQED Multimedia, will serve as moderator. Panelists include Elizabeth Echevarria, CEO and Founder of Living in Liberty; Anne Rackow, Planning and Evaluation Manager of the Project to End Human Trafficking and Co-Facilitator of the Western PA Human Trafficking Coalition; and Greg Bristol, retired FBI Special Agent, featured in the film “Not My Life.”

The discussion builds on the topics of human trafficking and forced labor, among other related crimes, and the work being done on the local, national and international levels to address these issues. Who is being exploited? What are the signs? What can you do to help?

Human trafficking, domestic servitude, forced labor, and child soldiers are just a few forms of modern day slavery affecting vulnerable populations – women and children especially – around the world. While often hidden, these exploitive practices are in fact present in the United States – and even Western Pennsylvania.

International Women’s Day is dedicated to celebrating the economic, political, and social achievements of women past, present, and future.  First celebrated in 1911, International Women’s Day recognizes the work for women’s rights, celebrates women's success, and reminds us of the inequities still to be redressed.

Three Agencies Join Together to Serve Women in Sudden Economic Distress
YWCA Greater Pittsburgh, Neighborhood Legal Services Association and Pennsylvania Women Work create the Women’s Empowerment Initiative

PITTSBURGH, PA (February 18, 2014):  Women experiencing sudden economic distress can now knock on the door of one agency and automatically open the door to services at two other agencies. The key is the Women’s Empowerment Initiative – created by the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh, Neighborhood Legal Services Association and Pennsylvania Women Work – that offers career, legal and emergency services for women who unexpectedly find themselves in financial instability due to a life-changing event or situation.

Falling into poverty can happen abruptly for women. The sudden loss of a job or loved one can steer a woman into a dire economic situation – one she has never encountered before. Funded by the Women’s Leadership Council of the United Way of Allegheny County, the Women’s Empowerment Initiative will help women in crisis situations take the necessary steps to connect to services and maintain self-sufficiency. These steps include free legal advice and/or representation, job readiness and training programs, and access to housing, childcare, healthcare and public benefits.

For more information, contact the Women’s Empowerment Initiative at 412-255-1488, ywcapgh.org/wrc orwrc@ywcapgh.org.

YWCA Addresses Violence Against Women

YWCA Addresses Violence Against Women

Violence against women, in its many forms, has no demographic boundaries.  It is known to all age groups, all races, all religions, and all socioeconomic backgrounds.  A woman is battered every 15 seconds in the United States, and 700,000 women are raped every year.  No community is immune, and violence against women is a serious problem around the globe.  According to the World Bank, at least one out of every five women in the world has been physically abused or sexually assaulted.  (Source: YWCA USA Week Without Violence.)

On August 29, 2013, from 12:00-1:00pm, the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Pirates will create emergency kits for greater Pittsburgh domestic violence shelters and organizations.  These kits will contain new/unopened personal hygiene and toiletry items, sorted and stored in individual Ziploc bags, for safe and easy distribution to women and children at the residential facilities and shelters.  Staff/volunteers from the shelters will also be on hand to accept larger household items that will allow women and children to create their own living spaces free from violence and abuse.

The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh asks for your donations during the months of June, July and August for the new/unopened items listed below. Donations will be shared with the following organizations: Alle-Kiski Area Hope Center, Inc.; Crisis Center North; Womansplace, Inc.; Women’s Center and Shelter; and YWCA Women’s Resource Center.

Please deliver all donations to the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh (305 Wood St, downtown Pittsburgh) through 11:00 AM on August 29, 2013:

New bed sheets (single and double)
New underwear (boys) and robes (ladies)
Diapers & pull-ups (all sizes)
New bath &  hand towels (all colors/sizes)
Bathroom mats and rugs
Kitchen towels and utensils
Silverware, can openers, dishes

Gas and grocery gift cards
Educational toys and books (T-5 yrs)
Travel size soap, shampoo, conditioner
Deodorant and wash cloths
Other small personal care hygiene items
Gently used small appliances (alarm clocks,  hair dryers, coffee makers)
New child and adult sized PJs

Domestic violence impacts countless women and children in southwestern Pennsylvania; educating the public and providing community resources are critical steps in eliminating abuse.  The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Center for Race and Gender Equity is partnering with the Pittsburgh Pirates to raise awareness about domestic violence in our own region. We invite you to join us in ending all forms of violence against women.

YWCA Greater Pittsburgh is located in downtown Pittsburgh (412.391.5100) and Homewood-Brushton (412.361.6433).

“I am truly impressed and inspired by the contributions these seven women have made to their professions and to the Pittsburgh community,” said Magdeline E. Jensen, CEO, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh.  “We are fortunate to have such remarkable women as role models for other women and girls. The honorees are all deserving of the YWCA’s Tribute to Women Leadership Award and exemplify what the award truly represents.”

The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh launched the Tribute to Women Leadership Awards in 1983 to affirm its mission to empower women and girls to reach their personal and professional goals.

This year’s Allerton Award recipient, Peggy B. Harris, is only the 12th such recipient of this honor since the inception of Tribute to Women.

Jennifer Abney, News Anchor, WPXI – Channel 11, is serving as Mistress of Ceremonies during the luncheon.  Proceeds from the event benefit the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh’s programs and services.  For more information about Tribute to Women, call 412-255-1261 or email ttw@ywcapgh.org.

YWCA Announces NEW Cornell University Diversity and Inclusion Training in Pittsburgh

Classes begin in February 2013

PITTSBURGH, PA (January 30, 2013):  Pittsburgh professionals will now be able to take Cornell University Diversity and Inclusion classes in their own back yard. The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Center for Race and Gender Equity and Cornell University’s ILR School are collaborating to offer Cornell’s Diversity and Inclusion Certificate and its Advanced Practitioner Certification (CCDP/AP) in Pittsburgh, beginning in February 2013.

“We are delighted to join forces with Cornell University to offer their prestigious certification program here in Pittsburgh,” said Magdeline E. Jensen, Chief Executive Officer, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh. “The YWCA encourages local professionals to enroll in the certification program, or consider taking individual classes to update their knowledge.”

Participants will work with and learn from colleagues while participating in lectures, thoughtful discussions and group exercises. The curriculum and professional exchange of experiences help D&I professionals, as well as HR professionals and managers tasked with diversity responsibilities to:

  • Enable teams to function effectively and engage well in a diverse workplace and create metrics to evaluate success in doing so.
  • Assist your organization with strategic diversity recruiting and retention strategies.
  • Establish and utilize effective employee resource groups, supplier diversity programs, and diversity councils.
  • Develop and implement powerful diversity and inclusion training for your workplace.

Spring/summer semester 2013 classes will be conducted from February-July, and registration is now open. Participants may take one or more individual classes of interest, or enroll in the certificate or certification programs. Fall classes will be available for registration in mid-spring. To find out more about certification or to enroll in classes, go to http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/hcd/certificates/dm/.

The YWCA Center for Race and Gender Equity seeks to promote a society in which all people receive equal treatment and have equal access in the workplace, public services, justice system, classroom, and throughout the Greater Pittsburgh community.

The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh strengthens our community by creating and advancing opportunities for all women to seek equality and self-sufficiency.  For more information about the YWCA’s programs and services, visit www.ywcapgh.org or call 412-391-5100.
